Pew: Near majorities oppose ObamaCare and DOJ suit against Arizona
posted at 5:49 pm on July 13, 2010 by Allahpundit
The public’s got a fee-vah and the only prescription is less Hopenchange. Opposition to O-Care’s actually grown by a few points since April, from 40/44 to 35/47, which is a welcome result given the signs we’ve been seeing of the public getting comfortable with its giant new boondoggle. As for the DOJ suit:

That’s the national result; in the prized swing state of Pennsylvania, opposition to the lawsuit is running at a cool 27/60. In The One’s semi-defense, you can see from these numbers why the case is arguably a good move for him politically. It pleases his base of Democrats and young voters, which may boost turnout, and the effect on independents will probably be muted by whatever the outcome of the suit is. If the DOJ wins, at least some indies will decide that Obama was right about the statute all along; if the DOJ loses, all’s well that ends well in court. O will give some sort of brief speech about how disappointed he is with the outcome while vowing to work with Jan Brewer and the states going forward on border enforcement, and that’ll smooth things over well enough on this issue with anyone who wasn’t dead set on voting for the GOP all along. Exit question: Is the DOJ lawsuit actually a genius move? (Exit answer: No.)

Blowback

Near majorities….that’s a little underwhelming.

Yeah, a real math genius, you win two votes and lose three…

I saw a bumper sticker today that said “If hope is the answer, how stupid was the question.”
sandee on July 13, 2010 at 5:54 PM
I love that “Don’t Know” result for the Dims. Shows just who stupid they really are.
Del Dolemonte on July 13, 2010 at 5:54 PM
Why do 49% of Democrats support law breaking?

Hello, Dummy!

The Pennsylvania part is my favorite. Looks like the Keystone State’s next governor will be Republican.

A genius move? No. I used to think this administration was up to something but it turns out its just incompetence in full bloom.

Underwhelming, yep. A “near majority” is still a minority.
Needs work.

They are waiting for “The View” to tell them how to vote.
Electrongod on July 13, 2010 at 5:56 PM
Pennsylvania voter sez: We told you so.
I’m surprised that only 49 percent of Dems approved of breaking the law; I thought the percentage would be much higher.

I guess the race card is really going to be utilized in ways never before seen to compensate for the disaproval by the electorate. Its real intensity will begin shortly after Labor Day. The NAACP passing a “racist resolution” against the Tea Party is just a small first step.

Arizona police and sheriff departments are going to sued endlessly if they make any meaningful efforts to enforce this law. Hispanics have been riled up into hating the police.

If you are working a large project, planning a big event or just trying to win a battle all you need to remember is to divide the work load. Divide and conquer. When have any of you posting tonight ever seen such divisive action from american leadership against its own people.
obleo on July 13, 2010 at 6:04 PM
If by some horrible stroke, there is a racial confrontation on 8/28 at Beck’s rally, the fire will have been lit. I just can’t see it happening, though. I’m sure security will be overwhelming. Hope so, anyway. I suspect the NBPP threats are just for headlines and to bolster

It doesn’t get majority approval in any demographic.
Pleasing 49% of your base while 23% of that same base stand around picking their noses is not worth the battle, by anyone’s political calculus, especially when you’re roundly losing among the other groups.
You’re not firing up anybody, when you can’t muster a majority in any of your core constituencies.

The word is out amongst the Demwits that MexiVotes make the D-Team stronger. Of course they want that, it means more something-for-nothings as far as the eye can see.
leftnomore on July 13, 2010 at 6:14 PM
Why on earth would the 18 to 29 group be pro the law suit? What is the matter with this group?
jeanie on July 13, 2010 at 6:15 PM
It’s time for Brewer to make a national ad.
Take up donations and fund a massive national ad campaign.
Take it straight to the public, explain the law, what it is, what it isn’t and WHY it’s necessary.
Give stats.
And ask the American public to support AZ. with their dollars.

O never buckles down, he doubles down on revenge on his personal enemies. For him, everything is personal
macncheez on July 13, 2010 at 6:19 PM
Probably, but, that’s a two edged sword. After they lose a few, the intent to harass becomes obvious and more backlash occurs. A bit off topic, but I see where Joaquim Soria who is Mexican and the KC Royal’s closer says he will boycott next year’s All star game if it is held in AZ. These guys keep demonstrating their ignorance regarding the AZ law. Going to be downer for him when he finds out no one cares if he’s not there.

Someone tell Nancy Pelosi.
ctmom on July 13, 2010 at 6:21 PM
Oh, yes. He’s the current AG who got his name in the papers for prosecuting corrupt politicians (mostly Dems, few GOP). The Dem nominee is a reliatively unknown machine poltician from Pittsburgh.
The Dems had a primary fight with some ads that can easily be recycled by the GOP against the Dem. Just like the GOP can recycle Arlen’s ads against Sestak if it chooses.

I think a lot of people have a problem with the idea of the feds suing a state. And what happens if more states pass legislation like this? Will they sue all of them?
Terrye on July 13, 2010 at 6:24 PM
Near majorities in pollsterland, equals majorities in the real world where their weighted samples can’t soften the bad news for them.
Brian1972 on July 13, 2010 at 6:24 PM
So riled up that Hispanics who are here illegally will return to their native countries?
I sympathize with U.S. citizens who are of Hispanic descent and the inconvenience they may endure… just as I sympathize with peaceful Muslims. But the fact is, their fellow countrymen are wrecking havoc and causing them all to be cast in an unfavorable light.

Maybe Barry can throw in Card Check, Cap & Trade and Immigration “reform” by November.
I’m sure he’ll be able to rally his base with all that.

those young’ns will rue the day they ever approved of this bonehead…just wait….
cmsinaz on July 13, 2010 at 6:29 PM
The poll showing young people actually support the lawsuit against Arizona reinforces my belief that the younger generation is just downright stupid.
We have a whole generation that listens to buzzwords, soundbites and tweets to become “educated” about issues.
ButterflyDragon on July 13, 2010 at 6:30 PM
I think you need to rephrase that.
Tav on July 13, 2010 at 6:30 PM
Perhaps. Fortunately, they will be solidly outnumbered by the rest of us who will be even more energized than they would be.
Go on punk. You feelin’ lucky? Make my day.
Brian1972 on July 13, 2010 at 6:31 PM
1. They’re young and idealistic idiots, so think they know it all. Especially the 18 to 23 group, AKA the College Kids.
2. They’re overwhelmingly Democrats.
3. See 1 and 2. There must be a connection.
Del Dolemonte on July 13, 2010 at 6:33 PM
agree with you there…
cmsinaz on July 13, 2010 at 6:33 PM
the law needs to be less than 220 characters for them to get a clue…

Nearly only a third support the DOJ action

Butterfly – you mean buzzwords like “patchwork”?
Crr loves that one.
CWforFreedom on July 13, 2010 at 6:57 PM
Not really. Of the groups polled almost all of them are against the lawsuit.
Democrats and the 18-29 crowd (likely the same people) are for it. All others have a majority against. That is what is meant by near majority.

Something to be said about canceling all student loans and making them pay their way through college. Having to earn and budget money just might teach them some real life lessons they are insulated from in college.
chemman on July 13, 2010 at 7:24 PM
If O loses the case he will instruct his people to appeal, like he did with the Moratorium. That should play the crisis out past the elections.

But I thought these things assured Obama a 2012 victory? Hmmm…
Sharr on July 13, 2010 at 8:50 PM
Perhaps, but more likely this will fire up the his opposition, it’s like Lindsay Lohan fingernail message to the judge.
Not the brightest thing to do.
And the suit is what?
That Arizona law enforcement cannot do the job the Obama admin/Feds have deputized and trained Arizona law enforcement to do, because it’s the Feds job to enforce the immigration laws, not the state of Arizona?
Sounds more like a hissy fit, than a law suit and that is how independents will see it.
DSchoen on July 13, 2010 at 10:25 PM
on fast-tracked ceding the South West to Mexico.
Or is that too honest?
DSchoen on July 13, 2010 at 10:31 PM
I would have to see the internals.
From what I am seeing they must have had 2 democrats for every 1 republican polled.
Not worth paper it is written on.
Steveangell on July 13, 2010 at 10:50 PM
From what I see so far, very ungenius.
Had Obama not initiated a lawsuit, he could complain about the AZ law all he wanted and feign helplessness to act, like he is feigning helplessness to act on the oil spill
He could use the AZ law as it stands to scare hispanics to the left. This is just as good an incentive as actually filing suit.
By filing suit, Obama cemented his position as a hater of anyone who likes the AZ law, and that is a lot of votes. He has made it known he will use his Federal power to strike down moves by citizens to control their own states.
Meanwhile there is only so much AZ can do with an illegal beyond jailing them at cost, or giving the illegals to the Feds, who will likely release them with an apology
Obama chose to go into a sticky separation of powers contest, which he could lose. If AZ loses, the Tea Party gets invigorated. If AZ wins, the Tea Party gets invigorated.
With this lawsuit, Obama has has declared the public is the problem and the illegal is the answer. It is too late to drop the lawsuit. Obama chose his favorite flavor, and it was non-citizen. Fool couldn’t wait until the election was over
