Video: Texas Dem blows up when challenged on ObamaCare

posted at 12:15 pm on July 12, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

How testy are Democrats going home from Congress to campaign in their districts? If this video of Rep. Ciro Rodriguez (D-TX) gives any indication, it may be the incumbents who are powder kegs and not their constituents. Last year, Democrats claimed that they couldn’t hold town hall meetings because of worries over potential violence from opposition to ObamaCare. The Texas Democrat seems to demonstrate that Democrats may have had a slight case of projection:

Mike Flynn at Big Government boils it down to its essence:

Rep. Rodriguez is an elected official with a duty to represent his constituents in Congress, no matter their political persuasion, and, he volunteered and asked for this job. He wasn’t ordered into this position by some judge, as some kind of sentence. He wants this job. It is a bit stunning that, at the first sign of criticism, he loses his temper so quickly. A confident politician would have been able to field this question.

When called out on it, ought to have been able to field the questions in a manner that didn’t resort to threats and a violent outburst. That he couldn’t tells you all you need to know about the political landscape today.

My friends, there is only one word to describe what you see in this video: PANIC.

Furthermore, this looks like a premeditated outburst.  For a year, Democrats have offered one false set of numbers after another on ObamaCare, as exemplified yet again last week by the IRS admission that they don’t have the resources to enforce the insurance mandate — and Democrats’ admission that they don’t know what the IRS needs to do it.  Certainly Rodriguez would have known that constituents would challenge his numbers when meeting with them, especially if he planned on rationalizing his support on CBO projections for health-care spending without ObamaCare.  Slamming the newspaper down in front of the constituent looks like a planned bit of theater that Rodriguez intended to boost his testicular quotient among the base; it’s likely to backfire instead.

To Rodriguez’ point, though, perhaps he should recheck his numbers with the CBO before citing them as an authority.  They have already dismantled his argument that ObamaCare saves money over the long term.

If you’re in TX-23, Rodriguez’ district, there is hope.  Francisco Canseco will challenge the incumbent in November, so perhaps it’s time to get to know him.

There is no doubt, none, that moving threatening towards a person is illegal…especially if that person is a women.

He should have answered with Bush, ants and saying you are sorry to BP.

I disagree that this is political theater. Nobody wins an election in America by being the angriest candidate. What I see is another liberal elitist aristocrat who thought he should be immune from criticism, that anyone who interrupts him when he chants the liberal catechism is a blasphemer.

Actually TX23 stretches from West SA all the way to the outskirts of El Paso! (Including Fort Stockton, Fort Davis, Alpine etc – ranching country, in other words). This was Henry Bonilla’s district until the Dems flipped it in the 2006 changing of the guard.

But with Dems wildly overreaching with their radical agenda, he’s in trouble & he knows it which is probably why he’s a little testy with his constituents. His Republican opponent is also hispanic (Quico Canseco), btw.

Come Senators, Congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t block at the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside
And it’s raging
It’ll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a changin’

I hate the word “dialogue” when used as a verb. It’s slippery. Conservatives “talk” or “discuss”. Liberals “dialogue”–which means they talk and you listen with rapt fascination.

Bye, bye, Dems. I hope Barack, Nancy and Harry drove your twisted ideology off a cliff. I hope it never recovers.

Texans must be nothing but a bunch of pacifists, because had he started that crap up here in the near-Detroit area, and that female someone’s boyfriend or husband been sitting there, he’d've been running for his life, real quick. To make things worse, somehow, I think Pancho Villa, here, wouldn’t've been so quick to start beating his chest like that, had it been a man calling him out for being such a slimy, snake-oil covered liar. Man or woman, though, walking toward anyone and raising your voice is rarely a good idea. Had he been a Republican, the news would’ve been plastered with allegations that he hates, and probably beats, women.

I posted this on the other thread but it bears repeating:

This guy has got to go! I live in TX-23 and have not liked how the constiuents in his district are represented. I sent a letter to Mr. Rodriguez 2 months before the Obama-care vote was taken expressing my concerns and asking if he had read the bill, etc. Two months after the vote was taken and the bill signed into law, Mr. Rodrigues finally got around to acknowledging my correspondence. Four flippen months to answer my letter and all I got was “what a wonderful bill he had voted for”. Well his chikens are coming home to roost!

Quico Conseco is running against him in the upcoming mid-term election and he will get my vote.

BTW: I’m sure Joe Pags will have this one teed up for his radio show this afternoon. Let the viral spread begin!!

glennbo on July 12, 2010 at 1:22 PM

Texas-23 is a gerrymandered district, that has a lot of voter fraud. Good money to be made, rigging mail in votes in some of the less densely populated areas, ripping off the elderly voters.

I am hoping Canseco can take this district back. There is a lot more population in northwest San Antonio now (where I am) that don’t like what is going on. The demographics are shifting.

BTW he is a jerk, but he has always been a jerk. There is another youtube floating around somewhere, of this guy yelling at people at an Eagle Pass town hall in a restaurant. Just didn’t go viral.

Yes, very good one. It was Henry Bonilla’s seat until the 2006 election. It’s a majority Mexian/Hispanic seat that leans Republican.

I’d wanted Bonilla to run for Phil Gramm’s seat when he retired to give us a Mexican Republican in a prominent statewide office.

Ranching and oil (awl) country – but I’m surprised those women didn’t jump up and take him to task for his ‘eagle-y inappropriate’ behavior. My wife would’ve kicked his butt, my dead mother would have damn near killed him. And she’s dead.

TinMan13 on July 12, 2010 at 1:48 PM

The most appalling aspect of this video is his threatening advance on the woman that accused him of lying. He took 4 steps towards her with an angry and intimidating scowl on his face, as if to challenge her physically. This is called “cowardice”.

I am not a man prone to violence (good thing, since the only fight I have ever been in was in an epic loss in the 9th grade), but if anybody approached my wife in a similar threatening manner, one of us would get their a$$ kicked.

Unfortunately I am a resident living in the 23rd District of Texas. “Zero” Rodriguez doesn’t have enough intelligence to have staged this. That is unless he was extensively coached by the folks in Washington D.C. That being said “Quico” Conseco is slightly better. At least he’ll be taking orders from the Republicans.

During the 2008 Republican Primary for the 23rd Conseco jumped all over Lyle Larson because of a family property transaction which had occurred 22 years earlier which resulted in a tax lien of about $950.00, which had been paid. His TV ads ran Larson’s face stamped with $950 Tax Lien on it.

The moral of this is that last week Conseco got hit with approximately $192,000.00 in tax and materialmen’s liens. I’ll still vote for him, but I will be holding my nose.

Ciro got his machismo all in a bunch because he was accused of lying. The woman said “then tell the truth…” and he went off. Granted, his response was not the best, perhaps this is what we should expect from a wise latino? After all, he represents the fastest growing portion of the US population?
