Gingrich: Obama doesn’t understand America

posted at 6:00 pm on July 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Newt Gingrich makes a similar argument to Charles Krauthammer’s in yesterday’s Washington Post, which is that Barack Obama really doesn’t get America. That’s not to argue over origins, because as Gingrich also points out, a cadre of American elitists fall into the same trap. While the majority of the country opposes the federal lawsuit against Arizona, the ivory-tower academics are really the only group enthusiastically cheering it on. It speaks to a fundamental disconnect from the American mainstream, and that spells trouble for Obama that goes far beyond this lawsuit:

An apocryphal quote had New Yorker magazine film critic Pauline Kael claim to be surprised by Richard Nixon’s landslide re-election, saying that no one she knew voted for him. That quote gets pulled out on occasion to demonstrate the cluelessness of media and academic elites about the nature of the American mainstream. The actual quote was somewhat more damning:

“I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they are I don’t know. They’re outside my ken. But sometimes when I’m in a theater I can feel them.”

In other words, it’s not an accidental cluelessness, but deliberate snobbery.  That seems to be the case for this administration as well.  The lawsuit against Arizona appears to be an attempt to lecture the American mainstream about how Obama and his circle demand us to think, not an attempt to right some egregious wrong.  If that were the case, then Obama would have filed suit against Rhode Island last year for doing the same thing, and would have ended the BIET program that encourages state and local law enforcement to enforce immigration law and refer violators to ICE.

Barack Obama seems to have a bad case of Kael Syndrome, in one sense or the other, and the American mainstream has begun to discover it.

Update: Kael wrote for the New Yorker, not the New York Times. Thanks to Kevin S for the heads-up.

What do you mean Obowma doesn’t understand America and her 57 states.

tarpon on July 10, 2010 at 6:05 PM

Obama doesn’t like America. He’s out to fundamentally destroy it so he can make it into a far left socialist/marxist third world rated country. So far, he’s doing a bang up job at that.

katieanne on July 10, 2010 at 6:08 PM

Some fairly senior Democratic talking head on the TV the other day said the Arizona law was written to be against Hispanics. I almost gasped when he said that. I don’t believe that’s a defensible position. Seems purely demagogic. Like we need more demagoguery these days.

Paul-Cincy on July 10, 2010 at 6:09 PM

My point being, Obama himself has said the AZ law can lead to racial profiling.

Paul-Cincy on July 10, 2010 at 6:10 PM

If being an American is just a state of mind independent of actual geography (as Comrade Zero has lectured us in trying to justify why so many illegals are entitled to live here), then it can definitely be said that PRESIDENT OBAMA IS NOT AN AMERICAN.

Cicero43 on July 10, 2010 at 6:10 PM

Phuck Obama. Personally, I think Obama understands America well enough. His problem is that he’s just not into America and Americans.

OT: Did anyone see Tucker Carlson guest-host for Hannity last night? I thought he was very good. In particular, I found it refreshing that he candidly riduculed Valerie Jarrett about her lack of qualifications for either Obama’s former senate seat or her current position in the White House. The MSM treats that woman as some kind of an omniscient guru. I think she’s a female Rasputin.

He doesn’t need to understand America. All he needs to do is make a beeline toward his goal of a socialist state and be done with it.

What he does understand about people in general is that there are some you can fool all of the time, and others that can be fooled some of the time. These are his people.

Thank you, Mr. Gingrich, or should I call you, Captain Obvious.

Now that Captain Obvious has uncovered the clever scheme of Captain Kickass, what does he propose to do about it?

Maybe he asked Nancy Pelosi what her thoughts were on the subject when they made that cute commercial about the dire consequences of global warming a few months back.

Those of us who Obama looks down his nose at were not fooled for one single minute as to his Marxist upbringing, his racist church, his terrorist friends, ad infinitum, and are not surprised one single bit as he employs his Scorched America strategy – all the while lying through his teeth as to his designs.

The question is what are we going to do about it?

Is it enough to patiently wait for November elections, kick plenty of D’s and statist R’s out of office and wait another two years before perhaps denying PBHO a second term?

Personally, I don’t think we have time on our side.

While it may be true that Obama does not fundamentally understand America our bigger problem is that yet millions of Americans still do not fundamentally understand Obama and all the damage he intends to do to this country.

Barack Obama and all his little socialist and communist loving cronies in the White House think that America needs to be taken down a notch or two.
It’s as if he thinks it is his job to punish us all and make eat a little crow.
He thinks we all need a little taste of poverty to humble us up a little.
Socialist love to punish people. We only need to look to the USSR under Stalin,China, North Korea, Cambodia,Nicaragua etc. to see what they do to people who do not think correctly.

A prissy, sissy of a man, Obama hates the very country who made him president.Much of this can be attributed to a Harvard education and socialist and communist colleagues in Chi-town.. In world history, NEVER has a racial majority elected a minority member of a different race to lead their country. Until now. Yet, instead of gratitude, Obama has shown contempt and hatred for the very people who made this unique and unprecedented election possible. To Obama, America is the quintessence of evil responsible for all world ills. Therefore, this Prince of Darkness must atone for its sins by sinking into third world mediocrity and The Chosen One has been given the power and authority to make this a fait accompli. A cathartic experience, for him, no doubt. Out of America’s ashes, will arise a new Phoenix, a socialist eagle led by Uno Who with redistributed wealth and reversal of roles for classes.

exactly my sentiment. he knows damn well what mainstream america’s bottom line is but he will trample on it and on everything else that gets in the way of the advancement of his radical agenda. his philosphy is probably that some of this socialist bull crap will stick around long after he’s out of the WH and generally long enough so that when a generational shift occurs (and it will, unfortunately, not before long) the groundwork and foundations for this socialist utopia would have been laid already. so no, he’s not stupid or out of touch in that sense, he’s just thinking long term in term of advancement if his utopian socialism. A Saul Below quote seems to be v. appropriate in the current context: ‘A great deal of intelligence is invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep’.(I guess we can safely equate ‘illusion’ with utopia or utopian ideals in our case).

Long time no see!

I know where you’re coming from, but my take is somewhat different. Obama understands America at certain levels, and he doesn’t like her as she is. Obama’s policies are destructive in part because he is trying to fundamentally change the fabric of American politics and society. He does think the world would run better if everyone would just listen to him and do as he says.

But I also think he is so confident in his righteousness and his abilities that he thinks he can just give a speech and we’ll all understand and agree with him. He is surprised when it doesn’t work out that way. So he and his people will say, “Oh, its our fault, we didn’t focus on the message, we didn’t communicate effectively.” What they mean is, “We have to dumb the message down even further for the rubes because they still don’t get it.”

The notion that they might be wrong, the rubes know it, and no amount of message-tweaking will change it never enters their minds.

Going to speak here purely as an observer, using my college degree. Have been observing politics for a long time, before the degree and after. Again – pure observation:

Does anyone remember The Air France Airbus A-330 that disintegrated last year over the Atlantic at night after inexplicably flying straight into a bad storm, despite the fact that other flights flew around the same storm?

Obama seems to have been, since the beginning of his presidency, determined to fly straight at the storms. And most times, it has, by a significant consensus of respected pundits, been against all accreted economic and social wisdom of America.

A plane can often be flown up to the limits of the flight envelope without significant consequence, other than shaken passengers. This is what rigorous flight testing is for.

But at a certain point, if pushed to the edge of the envelope, the plane comes perilously close to what is called, in aviation parlance, the “coffin corner.”

It’s a razor-thin state of flight in which every parameter has been pushed to the slender edge of known survival. In the “coffin corner” condition, the combination of parameters is so delicately balanced, that even one more quiver by the pilot can mean disaster.

And it’s called the “coffin corner” because, once reached, this extreme outlier of the flight envelope – meaning a combination of speed, altitude, angle of attack of the wing, etc., has more fatal results than successful. The pilots get into a spot where it is extremely hard to fly the airplane out of it without disintegration.

In the last few weeks, due to the unending list of disturbing and inexplicably un-American decisions by the administration, paramount among them the dual grotesqueries of blocking Bobby Jindal at every single turn from protecting the Louisiana coast, and blocking and suing Arizona Governor Jan Brewer from protecting Arizonans from continuing assaults and murders ny Mexican nationals, I have become convinced that Barack Obama has flown his presidency into the “coffin corner.” He has very little room to maneuver out of it. I hope he is light on the controls.

Down here on the Gulf Coast, the mood is ugly. I would wager that it probably is so in Arizona, as well.

I fear that he physically may not survive his presidency. And, if Obama does not cease performing what, by media accounts, appears to some to be an intentional Egypt-Air-990-style crashing of the American “plane,” this will be a tragic and chaotic consequence for America.

I fear we are on a razor’s edge. God help America if someone does something stupid – because the beauty of America is in its peaceful transitions of power.

I pray nightly that events will begin trending in a better direction – and, despite my prayers for peace, I do not rest easy this summer. To paraphrase the haunting refrain from 1963, “Mr. President, don’t go to New Orleans. Don’t go to Phoenix.”

Straighten up and fly right. God bless you, Mr. President. America doesn’t need more turmoil.

I always wondered how Pauline Kael knew that “everyone she knows didn’t vote for Nixon” Did she go into the voting booth with them. Don’t always believe how your “friends” feel about politics. You just might be stunned how they really feel instead of what they say. For both sides.

I FIGURED OUT OBAMA DOESN’T UNDERSTAND AMERICA, LAST YEAR. NEWT’S LATE.

StewartIII on July 10, 2010 at 11:03 PM

Just to reiterate, my last post was posted in my function as a reporter as I keep my ears open going about in public at random in Louisiana- in stores, etc. I am beginning to hear a recurrent meme – not among anyone I know – but among random members of the public – that Obama has got to go. I am not a member of any group, etc., talking about this. I just pay attention to anything political that I hear at market checkstands, etc.

The phrase (or idea) that recurs most is that he will not finish his term. Just – “he’s got to go.”

My idea that he may not go peacefully is based upon my knowledge of history, and gauging the level of anger I am hearing and seeing randomly in public in a state that does not usually discuss national politicals – not based upon anything specific I have heard or anyone I know. I feel compelled to write this followup post because I do not want any erroneous misunderstanding that I advocate a non-peaceful transfer of power.

Just reporting on a blog.

Obama has serious pissed people off down here.

3rd comment – Just sticking my wet finger in the air – this is the mood that’s blowing, in my opinion. People just want Obama out. I have not heard anyone even advance an idea how – because by and large, Gulf Coast folks are busy trying to make a living. There’s just this sense of an unjust oppressor. And there are a few million people here, and enough where some nutjob, by the laws of statistics, will try something extralegal. So I hope that the Dems and Obama do listen and try to step back a bit and take a breath and dial down what seems to anyone who follows the news, to be an agenda. The pressure just has to get dialed way, way down, because summer down here is hot, rigs are moving away, people are losing jobs, trucks and houses, and there’s a sense of a raw pinch just building, and everyone knows it was the president of the United States that ordered his people to stop issuing drilling permits and oh – by the way – we are being OVERRUN by Mexicans! Here in Louisiana!

Big rally coming up July 21st at the CajunDome to protest the moratorium. Signs everywhere all over town to show up and wave signs and plead with the president who has his boot on our collective neck and is hamstringing our governor.

I will provide a report of what I see and hear.

Oh wait, let’s see – this thread must have 3x as many comments as the Mel Gibson thread.

Thank you America. Thank you, HotAir.

Y’all come back, y’hear?

/Media blackout commences

Gingrich said Carly is especially disciplined. Hmmm. Not from what I hair.

jgapinoy on July 11, 2010 at 12:42 AM

Gingrich is a fool. Obama understands America just fine, which is why he is but one “lame duck” congressional session away from destroying it.

Dave R. on July 11, 2010 at 3:09 AM

Obama is so in love with himself, he can not imagine anyone but a racist not agreeing with him.

Your college degree notwithstanding I think you are making stuff up in your fantasy for something bad to happen to the President.
You are a “reporter” yet report on feelings and not facts. Sorry but your post seems a little too gleeful at the thought of some violent act befalling the president.
You do realize that if you hear threats, as a responsible citizen you should report them?
I live a few hours north of you and don’t “feel” any of the atmosphere as you described it.
As far as Mexicans it is pretty much the Black and White demographics that make up most of the population in the northwest corner of the state and certainly in New Orleans which has a 95% combo of the two. Where are these waves of Mexicans and how do you know they are indeed Mexican? Do they tell you as they run by?

Bradky on July 11, 2010 at 5:58 AM

I don’t read that. But I, too, do not expect Obama to see out his first term. Not due to violence, but incompetence. (Let me make clear I wish him absolutely no ill, and hope none befalls him. I think he’s an excellent father, for one thing.)

But he has a suspect past (no, I’m not a ‘birther’) and a present full of shady dealings. He’s under great pressure: greying, losing weight, golfing more than ever–as if he doesn’t, he’ll simply crack. He’s too unsteady and immature to handle the pressures of the office. I think anyone, Dem or Republican, can admit that. He’s not up to the job.

So, as his poll numbers sink into the low-40s and then into the 30s, I believe his cronies will jump ship. Once that happens, the newly-Republican Congress will begin investigations. Michelle Malkin can run her baby pinkie finger along his record and unearth a trillion maggots. What would a special investigator find?

Obama will not last his first term, and it has nothing to do with ‘violence’. The most likely scenario will be a forced resignation. Second, impeachment.

Grace_is_sufficient on July 11, 2010 at 7:52 AM

Obama is on the wrong side of every traditional American issue. He will be out of the White House after one term.

Ricohoc on July 11, 2010 at 8:12 AM

I think it is now safe to say that Obama’s grand experiment in extending community activitism principles and practices into federal government is a dismal, disasterous failure the size of Godzilla.

The problem is Obama is too blind-sided narcissitic to see that.

pilamaye on July 11, 2010 at 8:57 AM

Obama is basically a coward and a bully. People like that do not get people who are willing to fight simply for a principle, which is what the majority of Americans are or at least aspire to be. That is why he ignored D-Day and frankly probably didn’t understand why it mattered.

Fixed. Plus this………..Scaaaazaaaafaaaavvvaaaaa!

Wolfen on July 11, 2010 at 9:20 AM

I wonder if the Obama administration even knows what Rhode Island has such a law on the books, I doubt if they do. They are only aware of the things that directly effect them. It is all about Obama doncha know. The rest of us are just window dressing..if that.

Terrye on July 11, 2010 at 9:44 AM

Of course he doesn’t understand America, silly rabbit! How could you expect someone born and raised in Indonesia to understand America?

olesparkie on July 11, 2010 at 9:47 AM

I’d like to take a moment to pat myself on the back. I mentioned in a comment here on this blog a few months ago that the biggest difference between Palin and Obama isn’t their politics, but that Palin quite clearly gets America, and Obama, just as clearly, doesn’t.

Chris of Rights on July 11, 2010 at 9:59 AM

Not only doesn’t he get Americans, he doesn’t want to.

kingsjester on July 11, 2010 at 10:02 AM

Mr. President thinks he inherited a mess…pity his replacement, for it’ll be decades before they can put the country back on track.

Chris of Rights on July 11, 2010 at 9:59 AM

Pretty much. The difference being the media pans everything she says or does while they shower praise on Mr. President.
