Did the media spoil Ricky Hollywood?

posted at 12:55 pm on July 7, 2010 by Mary Katharine Ham

Ed linked Bristol Palin’s classy response to Levi Johnston’s apology last night, but in Allahpundit’s absence, I feel like we need to expand upon Johnston’s retraction.

It’s been a long time since we met Sex on Skates, as he came to be known before his appearance with Bristol at the Republican National Convention. He, of course, later became Stab in the Back on Skates, and later, Stab in the Back Sans Pants.

He is one of my least favorite media/political personalities of the last two years, coming in slightly behind the jerk who taped Erin Andrews. But while Levi certainly must take responsibility for being a giant arse, as he seems to want to do now, it is partly the media that’s to blame for giving him the platform from which to embarrass himself, his son, the mother of his child and her family.

The line from Sarah Palin critics is always that she gave him the platform when she brought him to the RNC in 2008. It was indeed Levi’s relationship with the Palin family that brought him into the spotlight, but it was his willingness to confirm every single anti-Palin narrative with a-tad-too-perfect anecdotes that kept him there.

As if reading his talking points from Andrew Sullivan’s blog, Levi told stories of the fake adoption of Tripp that Palin cooked up to protect her political career while he cast himself as a willing and reliable father figure to his future son. He blew the cover on Palin’s seemingly genuine affection for her son Trig, claiming she frequently called him “retarded.” He tantalized the CBS morning show and Vanity Fair with promises of more dirty secrets and, of course, dirty pictures of himself.

The media granted him a paradoxical position as a virtually unimpeachable source on one of the nation’s most important political figures whose questionable life decisions simultaneously confirmed the essential white-trashiness they suspected in Gov. Palin and her connections. The media didn’t care to reconcile the contradiction. He was either an upstanding truth-teller warning the world of this dangerous Alaskan Machiavelli or he was confirmation that Washington was narrowly delivered from this red-state rube would have brought all her Oxy-dealing relations to the capital. He couldn’t be both.

As I once told a friend in the media, a good rule of thumb is probably that a source’s credibility is inversely proportional to the number of times he’s shown his dong in public. And, that’s if you leave aside all the obvious reasons Levi Johnston had to lie about the Palins— hurt feelings over a break-up, lots of money in endorsement deals, and the ever-increasing attention he got every time he spoke up.

I know we play the “imagine” game a lot as conservatives, but imagine a scenario in which an ex-fiance of Chelsea Clinton’s telling tales on “life inside the Clinton family” would have gotten a slot on CNN or CBS at all, much less without a discussion of what the ex stood to gain from said tales. Al Gore’s son’s arrest on drug charges was barely mentioned, but rumors of exactly how much sex a teenage daughter of a former candidate may or may not have had and where? That was news. A former Democratic VP candidate’s life revealed to be utterly fraudulent in the wake of a sordid affair with a loopy cinematographer while his wife had cancer? Not really worth covering anymore— he’s washed up, not a candidate, hardly worth talking about. But the sex-ed policy preferences of a former Republican VP candidate’s daughter working to raise a baby as a single mom should be scrutinized with all the fact-checking skills we can muster!

In the end, it’s too bad for everyone involved that Sex on Skates skated by for this long. Sarah Palin and Bristol have been more than gracious to him in their public statements, not because they care about the p.r., but because they care about their family. It’s good to see this young man finally be gracious in return. It would be good for Levi, Tripp, and other young people prone to make big mistakes in the pursuit of money and fame to see the media cover Levi’s good behavior as diligently as it covered his bad.

I wish the best for Bristol and Levi as they try to repair a relationship that will be so important to their son. I wish Andrew Sullivan the best as he tries to track down the dirty snow-machining money that bought Levi’s silence.

Levi’s apology, in full:

“Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true,” he tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize.”

“So to the Palin family in general and to Sarah Palin in particular, please accept my regrets and forgive my youthful indiscretion,” Johnston says in the statement. “I hope one day to restore your trust.”

Anybody want to take a guess as to:

1. Whether or not Levi got scammed out of whatever money he was paid to say the things he apologized for?

You hit the nail on the head here. I’m very sure that most of the bashing of Sarah Palin comes from simple elitism. Sarah Palin’s worst attribute is who they think she is, not what she knows or what she says or what she wears.

Nah. Nothing that sinister. More likely is that he knows his 15 minutes of fame are up, his own family is worthless and won’t help him, and his only shot at a decent future is to reconcile with the Palins and try to be a good father to Tripp.

A man of integrity and honor would never have taken the media up on their offer. But I digress, Levi wasn’t a man in any sense of the word. Hopefully he has taken that first step towards becoming a man.

Levi’s apology is a desperate attempt to stay relevant. If he tried to keep feeding suspicious Palin dirt to the media, eventually people would see him for the publicity whore that he is and begin to disregard his claims.

But with the apology, he’s made news again. People are talking about him (I’m sorry for being a contributor). During the campaign, it was Levi Version 1. Then the dirt dishing was Levi 2.0. Now, he’s trying to be Levi XP or some such nonsense.

He’s still as relevant as a fart outside that no one hears, in my opinion.

To those who presume to speak for the Palins: Isn’t it up to them whether he regains their trust or not? I think the wise thing to do is to refrain from projecting your feelings onto the Palins.

Now if only Sarah did not resign as governor I would feel much more comfortable about her leadership qualities…

Levi is a distraction that can be easily overcome. But resiging as governor has put a serious black mark on her record that will be almost impossible to overcome in my view.

I like Governor Palin, but I don’t know how she ever loses the quitter tag beyond the hard core Palanites. Keep this in mind if she runs and does not win the nomination. She won’t have won because of people like Levi, but because of her own failings.

When liberals refer to their “Big Lie,” that’s what they mean. That’s the way propaganda works: If liberals say something that makes perfect sense, but for a single falsehood, it can be easily torn apart.

That is why liberals constantly say things so incredibly asinine that they can’t possibly be discussed without “personally insulting” the people making the claim; that way, none of their lies can ever be discussed rationally. It’s just a shouting war, and whoever has the biggest megaphone always wins.

It’s funny how Levi changed his tune once the state child support enforcement folks showed up on his doorstep. I seem to recall he was ordered to pay somewhere around $1700/month. If he’s like most non-custodial dads, he’ll be making that payment out of after-tax earnings. Throw in another few hundred bucks for health insurance, multiply by the 252 months he’ll be required to pay and now you’re talking some serious money. That sure could buy alot of BMWs, but ol’ Levi’s going to be spending his cash on “luxuries” like Pampers, Enfamil, sneakers and braces.

My objection exactly. If he really wants to restore his credibility and make up for the harm he has done, (which I doubt) he needs to either detail what parts of the story were untrue or (more likely scenario) admit that they were all completely fabricated. I have not doubt that he regrets his “youthful indiscretions” since they didn’t pay off as well as he expected. But regret is not the same as repentance and is far short of recompense.

ya2daup on July 7, 2010 at 4:34 PM

I wish Andrew Sullivan the best as he tries to track down the dirty snow-machining money that bought Levi’s silence.

Andrew Sullivan is a twisted human being who, like Oprah Winfrey, capitalizes on taking gossip-mongering to new heights. Oprah, along with other gossip shows, has made voyeurism a socially acceptable pasttime, and Andrew Sullivan simply stole that concept and translated it into an online blog venture that attracts others who have nothing more positive or purposeful to do with their time.

As for Levi Johnston, his options have clearly dried up and he’s being forced to look at his future and determine how on earth he’s going to pay the bills for his briefly extravagant lifestyle during his foray into the realm of Hollywood. He simply didn’t have what it takes, talent-wise, to capitalize on the entertainment industry, and they were obviously slamming doors in his face.

After Playgirl, the only choices, again since he obviously lacked any serious talent, would have been the porn industry. After all, with the reputation he’d built for himself with his nasty and largely unfounded attacks on Sarah Palin, I doubt anyone in the entertainment industry would even give him the time of day. If the MSM realms were not offering him hard cash for exposes, he’d have blown through the money for the Playgirl gig long ago, given his extravagance.

Not for one second do I believe he’s regretting his “youthful indiscretion”. More likely he’s regretting having burned so many good solid bridges, and he’s desperately attempting to throw up some planks hoping they’ll be solid enough to hold his weight while he attempts to rebuild some of those bridges. I’m thinking that he’s attempting to plug into a potential future where he might be able to tap financial resources temporarily as he changes focus and reconstructs some semblance of a decent life for himself.

What he is doing now is so slippery and weaselly that I can’t believe and don’t believe that Sarah and Todd have bought into his apparent change of heart and seeming remorsefulness. Not in the least. But for their grandchild’s and daughter’s sakes, I think they’ll cautiously go along with the flow for now.

And Levi’s “apology” was not at all an apology. Just a limited disclaimer; clearly limited because if he’d made a full public admission of having lied outright, then in the future, should he and the Palins have another falling out, they’d have all they needed to file a lawsuit that would set him back big time. That, in addition to giving Bristol ample ammunition for legally blocking him from having shared custody of their child due to his immoral and irresponsible activities, and obviously mean-spirited character assassinations against the family.

KendraWilder on July 7, 2010 at 4:35 PM

The media didn’t care to reconcile the contradiction.

-
It’s far worse than this… They were in on the scam. During the election cycle of our life time, when the future of the nation in so many clear and definably ways was at stake, they (the MSM) helped Obama by willfully attempting to destroy Sarah.
-
They knew McCain was a push over, but when Palin showed up… their pending orgasm of liberal leftist delight, not to mention (at the risk of being labeled a racialist) their dayglow daydreams of electing the real first Black president… were in danger. It was possible that this woman from outside the system, who was crashing their party, could steal their joy and indeed drag McCain over the finish line… She had to be stopped.
-
They didn’t need Ricky Hollywood to do the deed, but they were in ‘no holds barred’ mode so far as Palin goes. They knew that he was likely lying and just making sh*t up… They were totally okay adding it all to the ‘Palin Bio” anyway. Lies about her were good as gold and should be spread before they got old, or worse… proven false. A situation that still exist so far as I can tell.
-
I say Ricky, or Levi, or Pantyless Boy… or what ever the hell he’s being called today needs to work for forgiveness. Not just say *sorry*… Dig deep boy… Find a real thing to do to make it up to the Bristol, Sarah, Tripp, your own child and everyone else you hurt… Stop being a punk, become a man.

She could not afford to defend herself against repeated bogus ethics complaints and those bogus ethics complaints were going to keep coming as long as she was governor. The plan by those who lodged them was to destroy her – personally, financially, politically.
She was very smart to resign. In my opinion, not a black mark and nothing to overcome in that respect. Private citizen = no ethics complaints. Only a damned fool would have remained in that crazy ethics complaint/investigation/defend yourself” system in Alaska where those whose make unfounded complaints appear to bear no penalty by the state nor even censure by the Alaskan citizens for putting the state and its citizens through it all. (Someone please prove me wrong on that.)
Sarah Palin is no fool. She has very strong survival instincts. Those b*stards succeeded in forcing her to resign her office. But the ends did not justify the means for those idiots because they did not destroy her. She is bigger, badder and stronger than ever, hahaha!!

To MKH – GO DAWGS!!! Sic’em!!! Woof!Woof!Woof!

Re: Ricky Hollywood
He is a never-was has-been who should get down on his knees daily and thank God Bristol Palin still gives him the time of day, that he will be involved in his precious son’s life AND the Palins believe in forgiveness and redemption. Otherwise his future would look mighty dismal indeed.

In the future, I believe more interesting details of all the temptations that were dangled in front of Levi so the opposition could use him as a weapon against Sarah will come out.
I believe Levi CAN regain the trust he grossly betrayed.
But he has a TOUGH row to hoe getting there.

I do NOT, however, predict that he and Bristol will “kiss and make up”.

Great editorial, Mary. Boy, do I MISS Hamnation.

This person is not worth a thread on HotAir, or any other publicity for that matter.

Who cares?

Levi is not to be trusted!

If he gets close to the Palin’s again, I can see this dirtbag with a hidden cam trying to catch something on tape that he can sell to the tabloids…

I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him.

BRISTOL showed no brains by dating that loser, hopefully she’s smart enough not to fall for him another time.

But, ultimately who cares when November is only 79 days away. :-)
