Video: Teens rediscover hickeys, or something
posted at 8:30 pm on July 6, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Every year, we have to have a national hysteria over something happening with our teens, I suppose — and if that’s true, this one looks harmless enough. Thanks to the popularity of the Twilight series, teens are telling each other “Bite me” and meaning it … as a term of endearment. CNN sinks its teeth into this new fad:
Hey, I remember when we used to call them hickeys — and for that matter, I remember delivering those with a little more panache.
This isn’t anywhere close to the most disturbing trend among teenagers influenced by popular culture, among them the oral fallout of a claim by a former President of certain acts not qualifying as sex. It’s not even the most disturbing development from Twilight‘s impact on popular culture; Amy Klobuchar’s insistence on getting Elena Kagan on record as belonging to Team Edward or Team Jacob wins that booby prize for Klobuchar’s Minnesota constituents. The rediscovery of love bites ranks right up there with a modern resurgence of Spin the Bottle.

haven’t seen Twilight, the whole vampire issue skeeves me out a bit and its culturally concerning. I was standing in Barnes and Noble one night in the “teen section” and you’d think that all these kids read about these days are dead girls, vampires, and werewolves. WTF?
and there are those that say that there is no such thing as evil……like hell there’s not….

i assume that’s something from that movie…hardly qualifies as a question during the nomination proceedings for a SCOTUS position, but, what the hell…..Look who we’re dealing with anyway….
Laugh it up Amy, hopefully your district will send you a message this fall…. like “bite me”…
ted c on July 6, 2010 at 8:40 PM
You prudes just need to get over your aversion to light cannibalism. All the kids are doing it!
Rhinoboy on July 6, 2010 at 8:40 PM
Hey now, a little light S&M ain’t bad. It’s actually kind of fun between married couples!
MadDogF on July 6, 2010 at 8:42 PM
oh yeah….he was a step ahead of the crowd, no wonder rolling stone wanted to interview him. Alas, McC says “Bite me” and gets fired and Kagan admits she’s a fan and, to be perfectly consistent, she shouldn’t serve in the upper echelons of government either…..should she? . natch…

Heh, so did that last harry potter movie ever come out, or are they gonna wait til that dude hits 30?

The youths’ interest in death and dying is their way of seeing their future. They know a lot more than we credit them for.
TXUS on July 6, 2010 at 8:46 PM
hence, it must be alright, then…?… So, when all the kids are leading their BFFs around on chains because they “love them”….then we just need to get over our aversion to “light slavery”….
facepalm

The next big thing for Christmas Wish Lists:
Vampire Teeth Implants.
If idiot women would go so far to have their little toes amputated to fit into chic pointy shoes – why not permanent Elvira teeth?

Unfortunately she’s in the Senate, and no message will be sent till ’12, I think.
I have to say, maybe the view is different in MN, but this is the first time I’ve ever noticed her doing anything that got any coverage. Which is very sad. MN has a jester & a fool for senators.

Uh… it was a joke. By not getting it, it meant it wasn’t a very good one. I’ll endeavor to try harder next time.
Let me take this opportunity to inform this community that I never have, nor ever will, endorse cannibalism in any form.

Just another indication of how much Twilight has warped our culture.

I’m probably more weirded that this came from Twilight than anything else. It’s just a movie.

Ohhhh, hickeys. Cutting edge stuff here. For 1950. I always hated them myself. I wore short hair and you could never cover them right. Plus, it got old claiming you burnt yourself with a curling iron.

If I am a 200 year old vampire…
… who uses his powers to appear to be young, and enjoys the company of young, nubile, fresh teenage girls, where as I obtain a great amount of enjoyment by exploiting the ‘pleasures of the flesh’,
… is that wrong?

I can’t believe for the life of me that y’all are so far behind and not keeping up with this phenomenon! I have all four books here, read them, read online the last novella of Bree Tanner, and the leaked version of Midnight Sun (“Twilight” from Edward’s perspective). Of course, like most of you, I wondered what the hype was all about, and why all the cardboard cutouts were not leaving, merchandise and such. I had no idea of the 4-book series, nor the two side books.
There is a very GOOD reason lots of chicks like me dig into these books. From 6-year olds, to grandmothers. This is a quote from a grandmother, I believe, currently living in England. This touched me very much:
As for HP I have and read the last four books, got the first movies, and book 7 (which will be split in two movies, if you’ve seen the trailers) I hope they live up to the JK Rowling’s penning; I saw a pic of the trio a couple of weeks ago.
Let me tell you, after starting so young in these series, they are emotionally affected by knowing all this is coming to an end. I follow Tom Felton on Twitter (who plays the character Malfoy) and he tweeted something like “Today is the last day” that he gets to wear his costume, how much he loves and appreciates the opportunity, and of course, mentioned the 10 years. That was RT’d so much, it made the Twitter Trend among the first two.
The pressure that JK Rowling had over the series’ ending was insane. She either had to let Harry “live” or “die”. Very hard to deal with, the way she felt she could write the ending in such a secrecy was to lock herself up in a hotel room, with a box of Kleenex and give a wonderful ending to the series (and a huge relief for the fans), along with an incredible twist I didn’t see coming.
It’s nice to step out of this madness and read other stuff. Once I start reading something, it’s hard for me to stop. If I am pressed for time due to kids, audiobooks are the way to go. For example, Mark Levin’s “Liberty And Tyranny” is in audiobook form on my iPod.
Get to know what teenagers think; get into their minds, and don’t forget all of you were teenagers once. Even though mine are young, I feel is my responsibility as a mom to not lag behind and ask; that way it’ll be easier once the nightmare stage hits me.

Ah, I long for the days of being scared out of my britches watching Dark Shadows.

Honestly, I consider Twilight to be the physical embodiment of all that’s wrong with today’s society.
