Quote of the Day

posted at 10:20 pm on July 5, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Let us be honest. The US is still trapped in depression a full 18 months into zero interest rates, quantitative easing (QE), and fiscal stimulus that has pushed the budget deficit above 10pc of GDP.

The share of the US working-age population with jobs in June actually fell from 58.7pc to 58.5pc. This is the real stress indicator. The ratio was 63pc three years ago. Eight million jobs have been lost.

The average time needed to find a job has risen to a record 35.2 weeks. Nothing like this has been seen before in the post-war era. Jeff Weninger, of Harris Private Bank, said this compares with a peak of 21.2 weeks in the Volcker recession of the early 1980s.

“Legions of individuals have been left with stale skills, and little prospect of finding meaningful work, and benefits that are being exhausted. By our math the crop of people who are unemployed but not receiving a check amounts to 9.2m.” (via Fausta)

And it’s probably much worse. Changes in the tax code make temporary layoffs a much less important feature of recessions. If you subtract temporary layoffs from the number of unemployed, the adjusted unemployment rate looks every bit as bad as the worst of the 80s.

Obama and Supreme Court may be on collision course

Meanwhile,

Republicans in the hearing targeted Obama’s “tremendous expansion” of the government and argued for the court to aggressively restrain Congress and the White House. “The Supreme Court … ought to go for freedom, not more government,” said Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).

And heres the more worrisome tidbit adding to the Hopey

Obama chose Kagan for the court believing she could bridge the gap with some of its conservatives.

… we have to repeal the social engineering laws that interfered with the free market that got us here in the first place.

Along with those laws, we have to hold the politicians, like Barney Frank and Chis Dodd accountable, along with the media that swept it under the rug…

… Otherwise, not only will it continue to happen, it will get increasingly worse until their ideal social equality is realized built on the ashes of this country.

… And it will always be blamed on President George W. Bush.

Obama’s deliberately destroying the economy, health care, corporations (by taking them over), eliminating private property (by taking over home mortgages)…everything a Communist country needs. When things reach bottom, he’ll announce the failure of the capitalist system, but luckily he had the vision to put a benevolent Government system in place. So everyone will have welfare jobs, and compared to starvation, it will be an improvement.

The president’s agenda on healthcare and financial regulations sets the stage for a clash with the Supreme Court’s conservative majority.

But the year’s most important moment may have come on the January evening when the justices gathered at the Capitol for President Obama’s State of the Union address.

They had no warning about what was coming.
=========================================

Some advisors counseled caution, but the president opted to criticize the conservative justices in the uncomfortable spotlight of national television as Senate Democrats roared their approval

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. is still angered by what he saw as a highly partisan insult to the independent judiciary.
=============

The president and congressional Democrats have embarked on an ambitious drive to regulate corporations, banks, health insurers and the energy industry. But the high court, with Roberts increasingly in control, will have the final word on those regulatory laws.
========================

Many legal experts foresee a clash between Obama’s progressive agenda and the conservative court.

Obama, the great job killer

As former President Ronald Reagan might have said, “Obama, there you go again.”

The current occupant of the White House claims to know how to create jobs. He claims jobs have been created. But so far the score is Great Obama Depression 2.2 million lost jobs, Obama 0 — a blowout.

Obama is as hopeless, helpless, clueless and bankrupt of good ideas as the manager of the Chicago Cubs in late September. This “community organizer” knows as much about private-sector jobs as Pamela Anderson knows about nuclear physics.

I am one of the 9.2 million. Pro bono doesn’t count as meaningful work. If I don’t get a job soon, not sure what I’m gonna do. It’s damned demoralizing.

Meric1837 on July 5, 2010 at 10:24 PM

I was there too, hang in there. I was on the streets for almost a year & 1/2 & probably a month or 2 away from running out of UI benefits. Got a part-time job & 1 week into my training another of the 100+ places I applied at offered me the full-time job I have now. You’re right, it is demoralizing – just know that you’ve got talent & someone’s going to need it soon.

By the way…

Don’t forget that Jan. 01, 2011 ends President Bush’s tax cuts, and enables Obowma’s new distribution of wealth.

… I am sure that some of the details in the thousands of pages of laws we were never able to have read before voting on will also leave a sting.

- The 10% bracket rises to an expanded 15%
- The 25% bracket rises to 28%
- The 28% bracket rises to 31%
- The 33% bracket rises to 36%
- The 35% bracket rises to 39.6%

That should help with the economy…

Be sure to take a look at http://www.diversityinc.com to learn more about the many corporations with pro-active diversity programs.

This is all tied to the fact that the government is using bailout and stimulus tax money as a slush fund to funnel back to these companies in return for these diversity/social engineering programs.

Reparations.

If Barack Obama has one big time talent, it’s his ability to never show his radical hand.

Alinsky style, it all goes on underneath the radar.

How the heck does Mr. Evans-Pritchard know what 1932 “felt” like? He was born in 1957. Maybe instead of piling on the BS in an already disastrous situation, he could have said, “Has similarities to,” or something along that line.

Would you believe that you will get seventy virgins in the next life?

In case you were wondering, the blue dogs were promised a great economy right about now. I would love to hear the conversations in the Dem caucuses in the next month or so.

Ahhhhh…maybe they will get great appointments or jobs at GE or GM making unicorn powered flying houseboats. Our global warming sexy poodle Gore has one now. He is also so worried about the rising water that he bought a beach house in California. Seems he isn’t waiting for the next life.

I always respected Ralph Nader even when I disagreed with him. He lived like a monk.

Just a heads up for those with 401k’s, mutal funds stocks etc. the 1930′s depression saw a 90% loss in the DOw from it shigh before it ran its course. From 1929-1933. The DOW reached 14,500 at its peak before the crash in 2008. We are now at 9700ish. there is a long way to fall. And falls usally happen very quickly. I see DOw 3,000 as a possibility. It will get worse before it gets better. Obama and bush placed the SAME POLICES into effect as Hoover and FDR. Those polices gave us 15 years of depression and a world war.

remember also that the people in DC Obama/Bush the dems as well as the GOP establishment would rather we go through pain, misery, and poverty then they give up an ounce of power.

they care nothing for us, our families, nor our country. They only care about their power.

26% of the people cannot say who we declared our independence from.

A business has 100 job openings they cannot fill because part of their FIRM hiring criteria is that the applicant must be able to read and write at the 9TH GRADE LEVEL.

I just got a letter from my mortgage company, the third in 6 monds, offering to “refinance” my mortgage at 125% loan-to-value with NO CREDIT CHECK and NO INCOME VERIFICATION and NO ASSET VERIFICATION.

Credit default swap are STILL not regulated.

The EPA and NOAA (Fisheries Management) are DESTROYING what they were “supposed” to protect by blocking gulf clean-up efforts.

Our taxes are getting ready to increase SUBSTANTIALLY on January 1, 2011 while we are in a deep recession/depression.

A business man that gets wind his company is going to be “investigated” by congress would be prosecuted for selling his stock (insider trading) while the VERY CONGRESSMEN making the decision to do the investigation selling the very same stock for the very same reason, WOULD NOT.

I could go on for HOURS. The list of things needing corrected is very long and no one is even LOOKING AT THE LIST, let alone starting to fix them.

We have a very long road ahead.

Maybe he asked his father or grandfather. My grandfather was born in 1923 and, while he generally doesn’t like to talk about those times, he still will talk about them if you ask him nicely enough.

There are still many people alive who went through The First Great Depression and who are now working their way through the second one.

You are aiming at a straw man here. Start debating the facts and stop attacking the messenger.

Let’s be clear, this is a dempression.

Millions of Americans are unemployed because of the idiotic incompetence, corruption and all around utter worthlessness of the Democrat Party and leftwing ideas in general.

This is the slowest recovery in American history, because Americans elected an utter and complete jackass rather than a President.

Americans elected circus clowns to Congress and more importantly, to lead Congress.

Obama, Pelosi and Reid are hands down the worst leaders this country has had in all our history.

To bounce back, we need to make Obama, Pelosi and Reid history ASAP.

Stale skills? Those that actually produce real goods.

Little prospect of finding meaningful work? In our region, current contracts to produce come from formerly third world foreign governments.

What the “h” is wrong with corporations promoting diversity? All insurance carriers look for new markets. Diversity in the housing market, when applied responsibly, opens new markets for insurance carriers. Its called CAPITALISM. ‘Ya think SF, Allstate, NW, Progressive, etc limit their promotions to white, middle class, neighborhoods?

You can’t blame insurance carriers for the housing mess. They are simply taking a proactive approach to the obvious demographic trend in our country.

Geez!

I’m one of the 9.2 million too. I was so happy to have gotten a full-time consulting job right as I got my last unemployment check last November. But now that’s gone too and I got nothing.

There is most certainly a double-dip recession in mortgage lending. Business is off “unexpectedly” by almost half in the first half of this year from last year. Companies are dumping consultants, canceling raises and travel, and everything else they can cut. My employer told me that if business picks up they will call me back, but I don’t see it picking up at all.

Mortgage rates are the lowest they have been since 1971! But nobody can buy a house or refinance because nobody has a job. And lenders can see a gigantic fireball of new regulation and lawsuits heading their way, thanks to Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Barack Obama.

A million jobs have been lost in financial services, mostly white collar jobs with good salaries and benefits. They are not coming back. What do you do next if you have been in financial services for 25 years?

As if any such fund as 401K will be around much longer, or even that the dollar won’t suffer devaluation.

This is the potus whose first unstopped move was to break contract law from the Oval Office.

Whether it’s for ObamaCare or simply to disappear directly into others’ pockets, Obama has no compunction to leave any public funds untouched. His entire professional history in Chicago was to personally abscond LEGALLY with tax funds appropriated for public works projects. Altgeld Gardens should have rung the public warning bell prior to the 2008 election. But Malkin’s HotAir et al. were not interested in critical analysis of Obama’s controversial personal/professional history, though Obama’s crooked record was posted, referenced by Stephen Diamond as “pinstripe crime”. Irony there being that Diamond has posted since @ Huffington, and his blog no longer has public access. Upon Obama’s election, Diamond cleansed his own academic bibliography prior to Oct. 2008. But the Boston Globe includes the assessment by Obama’s Altgeld successor, admitting the basic convolution in logic: the local job was so impossible to accomplish, that Obama had to move on to the global realm in order to address problems from on high.

Obama wrote that challenging the city on asbestos removal changed him “in a fundamental way. It was the sort of change that’s important not because it alters your concrete circumstances in some way (wealth, security, fame) but because it hints at what might be possible and therefore spurs you on.”

After three years as an organizer, Obama could say that he helped some people get jobs and that many apartments were cleared of asbestos. But the large-scale change that was needed at the 1,998-unit project was beyond his reach.

Obama’s successor in the job, Johnnie Owens, recalls Obama explaining why he was leaving for Harvard Law School with his eye on a political career.

“The problems on the local level were so huge that you could spend the rest of your life working on those sort of things and have some marginal success,” Owens said. “So he understood that change would take a much more global approach.” 1/22/2008

Obama’s only professional ability rests in raiding public funds for his own profit, particularly preying on the most defenseless, whether the unborn or the poorest of our elderly. That power to usurp has augmented according to his administration with Congress and Att.Gen.Holder to overwhelm American industry, our economy, states rights, and the inner essence of citizenship.

The sooner Obama’s loyal opposition impeaches Obama on bribery and removes his federal enablers from government, the better–so long as the loyal opposition doesn’t simply usurp the corruption of power for their own to abuse.

Smaller government begins with Congress rescinding all of the Marxist bureaucratic augmentations. Shock and awe with US citizen voter turnout.

First, labor was displaced as stale. At this point, those who understand the economy and know financing are displaced as stale to make way for the current revisionism from America as sovereign state/nation assimilating into the globalized New World Order. What to do next to fit in with whom?

TN Mom on July 5, 2010 at 11:33 PM

We will win in November, but by then the climb out will be long and difficult.
This could have been over 12 months ago, with just a few simple adjustments, and riding out the cycle.
But now it is so much worse, and so many things put in place to make it worse…I am afraid this is going to be a difficult few years, and one election in November will just be a start.
