Chicago newspaper: What were we thinking in electing this narcissistic empty suit?
posted at 3:35 pm on July 5, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Tom Elia seems a little confused by today’s editorial in the Chicago Sun-Times. The paper scolds the electorate for trusting an empty suit with no accomplishments to a high executive office, and itself for endorsing him. But which empty suit do they mean? If we remove the name, can you tell?
If the latest farcical revelations from the Rod Blagojevich trial tell us anything, it’s that the people of Illinois — that would be us — twice elected a narcissistic goof of a governor who was all show and no substance.
The man was an empty suit, albeit a $5,000 custom-made Oxxford empty suit. …
Character counts before all else. Real accomplishments count.
And all else, if there is anything else, comes third.
Yes, of course this self-flagellation comes at the expense of disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich, he of the “f*****g valuable thing” and product of the Chicago Machine. Blago was more than just all show and no substance, of course; he was also allegedly a crook who intended to sell a Senate opening to the highest bidder. But even apart from the crime, the tapes at his trial show Blago to be a vain, self-centered, and irresponsible jerk who couldn’t have cared less about doing the job entrusted to him by the people of Illinois.
That’s the reason why character and accomplishments count more than talk and looks. Before electing someone to high public office, especially as an executive, the electorate should demand a track record of accomplishment and review that for insight into character. Perhaps Illinois’ GOP didn’t give voters much of a choice in these areas, and it’s good to remember that Blago got elected in the wake of a scandal that put the previous Republican governor in prison. Instead of just jumping onto a bandwagon out of spite, though, voters and media endorsers need to remember that the candidate they back will be in power for several years — and if that candidate is not prepared for it, it will lead to disaster.
If the Sun-Times has learned this lesson with the Governor’s office, perhaps they’ll also reach the logical conclusion about the current President, another product of the Chicago Machine, as well. While we don’t have the same criminal issues arising at the federal level — yet — the incompetence, self-absorption, and disdain for the actual responsibilities of the job are all there, too.

Both of these “empty suits” were spawned in the cesspool known as Chicago. I doubt these two are the only ones of their ilk. The city government just passed stricter gun controls for Chicago (45-0)after their appeal to the Supreme court was denied 5-4. Governments that worry about gun ownership generally have a reason to worry. Now that the state of Illinois is bankrupt, it starts to make sense.
volsense on July 5, 2010 at 4:05 PM
Don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen! The Sun Times has a rather influential columnist by the name of Mary Mitchell, and she fawns over Obama every single chance she gets. Between her and the Chicago Tribune’s Clarence Page, Obama has two of his biggest cheerleaders in the Chicago press.

In addition, I kid you not, the Republican candidate for Governor in 2002 was named Jim Ryan. As I recall Blago and the MSM worked pretty effectively together to make it look like Jim Ryan and George Ryan were brothers (or one and the same for the less aware voters) and Blago ran on a, again I do not kid, clean government platform.
Memories……
Big E on July 5, 2010 at 4:14 PM
Are you bloody kidding me, Ed? Blago is a piker compared to Barry when it comes to corruption. He was merely serving as a middleman broker Obama was using to sell his own senate seat to Jarrett. And deliberately hamstringing efforts to address the Gulf Gusher in order to ram through his and BP’s cap and trade legislation is beyond criminal. That $20bil BP threw down was simple pay-to-play.
The Sun-Times is just trying to distance Obama from Blago. You really think they give a rip about endorsing Governor Helmet Hair? This is only damage control to protect Barry from his own criminal actions.

The only reason Blago earns this article is he was caught way beyond the public decency, he’s canned fish because of his horrible language not because he dillyed for some cash on the side, otherwise all would be peachy, now if we could just get the CiC using the same language and get it out to the public.
Speakup on July 5, 2010 at 4:19 PM
Christien – I don’t think Obama wants to be corrupt, but I think his political philosophy and lack of personal executive experience leaves him dependent on a bunch of underlings who will be Filet Mignon-grade subpoena bait as soon as someone other than the Democrats get hold of a lever of power again in DC.

I’m sorry, but I disagree. The man wants to be exactly what his corrupt mentors wanted him to be. They are as corrupt as they come, and so is he. He has chosen the path of destruction and will pay with his soul in the end.

Is the Chicago Sun-Times a bunch of silly school girls?
I’m sure if they were held to account for endorsing a scoundrel like Blago who most people knew was a scoundrel, they would say “but we didn’t know!”.
Here’s the lesson they say they learned:
That’s nice. But it’s meaningless if they don’t learn the real lesson: Just print the news.

Obama has always been a puppet. We all know these type of people. No personality, no goals, no thoughts, no passion. They just tend to show up in places, try to look good, and when you attempt to converse with them they tend to make small talk and then move on to the next gaggle of gatherers.
Obama is a puppet. He’s white. He’s black. He’s Christian. He’s Muslim. He’s Married. He’s Gay. He’s a Sportsman, but lo, he is not (proof positive in his golf swings), he’s pro-Military and Anti-Military, pro Gay Rights and Anti Gay Rights/pro Marriage, pro Gun Control and pro Gun Rights, he’s pro-drilling and anti-drilling, he hates Hill and Bill but he loves Hill and Bill, he saves banks and then detests them; he’s pro wall street and anti wall street. The list grows.
When will America wake up and say to this puppet: Who The Fark Are You? Where Did You Come From? Why Are You Trying To Destroy Our Nation?

My take on it is that Barry, who is a total cheapskate (with his own money), tried to stiff Blago on his cut for selling Barry’s senate seat, Blago took umbrage and wasn’t about to roll over for a line-jumping punk like Barry, so the Chicago Machine decided time for Blago to take the fall for Barry’s failed sale of his seat.
Why else are the Democrat so desperate to protect Obama by going after Blago?

Yet? One can only hope that the appalling situation with the DoJ voter right’s issue will lead all the way to the top. That’s where is most likely came from, yet it will probably stop with Holder’s resignation. And that’s only if…. if… there is some traction taking hold with the media.
The ultimate irony would be an administration lead by the first “black” president having initiated racial discrimination with regard to voter right’s prosecution.

The previous Democrat President, while in office and after leaving, was held by his kneepads in the media and the Democrat party (same thing, actually) to be above the law for committing a felony crime that would land any other US citizen in jail for 3 years.
The precedent has been set.

Don’t forget the horse the Democrats nominated to be President in 2004, the tree they nominated in 2000, etc.
Speaking of Dead Kennedys, I was thoroughly insulted to see a portion of last night’s Boston Pops July 4th show hijacked by a musical tribute to them. This was on the local broadcast (not the C-BS national feed later) so I don’t now if it was shown later to the world. Anyone see the national feed?

Don’t ever forget about Chicago’s “ghost voters.” They have been really important, in conjunction with the dead voters, even before Mayor Daley the First made that little “deal” with Joe Kennedy to get Jack elected. Why one time, years ago, for some reason, some dummy was checking the voter rolls and found hundred of “people” were living right on top of the Rock Island Line railroad tracks – in apartments, two flats, three flats and single family dwellings. True story.
MayorDaley on July 5, 2010 at 7:05 PM
Those of us lucky enough to live in Blago/Obamaland know, for certain, that both the Sun Times and The Trib will mindlessly endorse whomever the most corrupt local chapter of our corrupt national overlords next nominate for both governor and president – and all other offices.
This editorial is bullshit of the highest order.
