Volunteers beached in Gulf by feds?
posted at 3:19 pm on July 2, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The effort to clean up the Gulf has been plagued by a multitude of leadership failures over the 73 days of the crisis, but this week it seemed as though a glimmer of hope had arrived. The Obama administration claimed that it would start accepting help from foreign countries, and BP pledged to get more boats to the Gulf to remove crude oil as fast as possible. The AP reports that those efforts may be a sham — a make-work effort intended to drive numbers but keep boats beached:
BP and the Obama administration face mounting complaints that they are ignoring foreign offers of equipment and making little use of the fishing boats and volunteers available to help clean up what may now be the biggest spill ever in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Coast Guard said there have been 107 offers of help from 44 nations, ranging from technical advice to skimmer boats and booms. But many of those offers are weeks old, and only a small number have been accepted, with the vast majority still under review, according to a list kept by the State Department.
And in recent days and weeks, for reasons BP has never explained, many fishing boats hired for the cleanup have done a lot of waiting around.
Waiting around? Isn’t there plenty of work to be done? One might think so, but boat captains are complaining that the situation has no leadership. BP has told them to remain at the dock while paying them a substantial flat-rate fee:
Rocky Ditcharo, a shrimp dock owner in Buras, La., said many fishermen hired by BP have told him that they often park their boats on the shore while they wait for word on where to go.
“They just wait because there’s no direction,” Ditcharo said. He said he believes BP has hired many boat captains “to show numbers.”
“But they’re really not doing anything,” he added. He also said he suspects the company is hiring out-of-work fishermen to placate them with paychecks.
Billy Nungesser, the president of Plaquemines Parish and now a nationally-known figure in Louisiana politics, says that the federal government promised him that 140 skimmers would patrol the waters — and gave him a map of their precise locations. When he took a helicopter ride to check it out for himself, he only found 31 on the job. Nor are boat captains the only volunteers getting beached by the effort. Over 20,000 people have offered assistance in on-shore cleanup efforts in the region, but only a sixth of those have been put to work.
The cleanup effort has run aground, and it’s a failure of leadership. Small wonder House Democrats blocked its members from traveling to the Gulf to see the situation for themselves and the White House is blocking media access.

at least 3 days after Katrina it was apparent to the Bush admin that an all hands on deck approach was needed.

So the clean up effort is fraud, Chicago style ghost workers who get paid for staying home? Whoda thunk it.
Skandia Recluse on July 2, 2010 at 3:23 PM
There is nothing more threatening to a bureaucrat than “volunteers”.
Volunteers work for free.
They don’t join the union.
They do what “paid staff” would do.
They are capable of working with minimal or no “direction”.
Volunteers are the most terrifying thing bureaucrats have to face. Successful volunteer programs can end paid government programs.

The leftist media is portraying this as a lockdown by BP and infers the Feds are “helpless” to do anything about it.
There’s suprisingly LITTLE information and/or accountability of the operation going on. This is a clean up operation that encompasses 3 STATES and a large body of water and airspace and yet with all the camera phones and private water craft and private air craft let alone all the press coverage, nobody can seem to actually report on what’s going on but instead read from press releases and photos given by BP and/or the Feds with the occasional hyperbolic ranting like a surreal weather report (Cloudy today with oil slicks coming in with the tide… surfing should be good though.)
Jindal’s screaming like crazy but I only see his face for a very short time on Fox.
The only other reporting I see comes from leftist environmentalists who claim DA EVIL BP R POISONING US… SEE MY VIDEO ON YOU TUBE WHERE I TELL YOU ABOUT TEH EVIL (but neglect to have any actual video evidence, paper evidence or actual records that they were there)
So BP either has total press control of 3 states worth of media AND controls access to the State’s governments own territories… Or the Federal government has initiated a press blackout and state border control via FEMA laws and lets BP take the fall.
You know what I think.

Luckily no one has thought to bar NASA/JPL from putting out satellite imagery of the spill. And Gov Monitor seems to be trying to keep up with things, although its more statistics and a few maps of where the spill is. Have to look around a bit more to see if the French or Israelis have put up some nice imagery of the Gulf recently…. really they could contribute so much with just a few overhead passes…

My brother is a retired fisherman in Panama City Beach. He says the best thing the government could do is offer $200 a barrel for oil. They would have every fisherman for 4 states out collecting the oil. It would be gone in a matter of days.
But of course, then the EPA would say they are polluting, and the SEIU would protest that they were taking away union jobs on the big skimmers, and………

The political response is intentional. But Obama was going to expand off shore drilling and the politics of this is a disaster no matter the response. There’s no way this was orchestrated or planned. Not to put a racist spin on this but I believe that if Obama was just your typical Democrat (white) President, the press would have eaten him alive by now just as they did with Carter and Clinton. But no, he’s the one that was going to bring balance to the force…

It’s Day 73 of the Gulf Oil Spill Disaster–
There is now clear evidence that the negligence by the Obama Administration caused the destruction of the Gulf coastline.
** The feds only accepted assistance from 5 of 28 countries.
** It took the Obama Administration 53 days to accept help from the Dutch and British.
** It took them 58 days to mobilize the US military to the Gulf.
** The feds shut down crude-sucking barges due to fire extinguisher concerns.
** The Obama Administration ignore oil boom manufacturers that have miles of product stockpiled in their warehouses.
** They only have moved 31 of 2,000 oil skimmers to the disaster area off of Florida.
** Florida hired an additional 5 skimmer boats to operate off its coast due to federal inaction.
** There are no skimmer boats off the coast of Mississippi.
** The massive A-Boat skimmer won’t be allowed to join the cleanup effort until the Coast Guard and the EPA figure out whether it meets their standards.
** The feds shut down sand berm dredging off the Louisiana coast.
** The president continues to hit the golf course, ball games, hold BBQ’s and party while the crude oil washes up on shore.

Let the destruction of the Gulf Coastal area be complete and then pass Cap & Trade.
Let the killings in Arizona increase to a crescendo and then pass amnesty.
Let January get here and the Bush tax cuts are over then taxes rise without any action necessary.
All of this is just gibberish…..right?

I have done a lot of business in Chicago. This is very common with big projects. The shakedown of all the companies for bribes slows it down. I suspect the A whale would have been passed inspection if they had payed off. By the way BP is an operator and doesn’t have many workers down there. It is blamed for things the feds caused.

I’m going to post this again, because the maker of this film wants it to go viral. It is long, but it tells the truth about what is going on. No boats, no skimmers. You may need some tissues because it also shows sea life dying.

That Obama and the feds are blacking out the media? Absolutely.
But I don’t think they’re controlling the clean-up to push their agenda so much as they’re controlling the clean-up lest we find out how BAD it really is. Because heads WILL roll.
But I haven’t figured out if they’re doing it because they’re in bed with BP (BP was and is a political ally of Obama and large funder to the DNC) and trying to protect both BP and the Democrat party or if Obama has cut BP loose and is just doing to CYA himself.
OR maybe the spill isn’t that bad.
An open and transparent organization wouldn’t hide stuff like this though…

They are too stupid though to imagine the consequences, they are too busy enjoying the prospect od Cap and Trade.
ORconservative on July 2, 2010 at 3:54 PM
You take a look at that video I posted above and then you will understand the nature and extent of the damage this has caused. Is Obama responsible for the explosion? No. Did he step up and take 100% responsibility and compare his response to what we did after 911? Yes. No action is being taken.
There are teams of volunteers also being turned away. Restricted area. No cameras. No photos. You have to be very discreet.

I don’t get it. I think it is great that people are getting out there. You can tell Jindal is ticked off as are other Gov’s. So why not have people who want to help, just get out there and clean up.
See if comp’s or corp’s will donate bags, shovels etc and start getting the oil up of the beaches. If you see a animal covered and is not dead yet, see if volunteer animal orgs will go out and help clean the animals?
This frustrates me. This your your country, your beaches, your money…. WTF are you having some ding bat with a clip board telling you what to do when they don’t have a clue either!

According to my husband he said that these people look like ACORN and they can be a little intimidating. We’re watching very closely and he may be heading back up again… not sure yet. One interesting thing is that NOAA doesn’t seem to be tracking the spill anymore. If you look at their site, and its trajectory maps, they’re not even including Panama City which was covered in this crap a week ago.

this is not a failure of leadership, this is being done on purpose. President Kickass has a planet to save and the evil oil companies with their windfall profits are standing in Mr. Wonderful’s way of saving us all from ourselves.

I agree, this NEEDS to go viral.
Where are the Greenpeace, ELF, Sierra club, Save the Whale etc in all of this ? Who / What is holding them back ?
IIRC, after Katrina, ‘environmental volunteers’ from as far as SF descended on New Orleans to save the pets left behind by their owners and flew them all over the country for adoption.
Now when its Hussain’s Latrina, none of those’environmental volunteers’ are to be found.

Obama wasted no time sending the bust of Churchill back to UK as an insult to one of our closest allies, but Super Genius could have learned a lesson from how fishing boats and anything that could float turned the tides of hope toward Britain at the Battle of Dunkirk.
Obama is truly an idiot. Possibly even worse than Biden. Biden just likes sticking his foot in his fat mouth, where Obama the Simple is wrecking havoc internationally.

I have been asking a lot of local enviro’s and Bezerkeley types about their efforts to save the flora and fauna of the Gulf of Mexico, after more than 2 months now. These are the people who put on latex gloves and hit beaches with cardboard boxes the moment we have even a little dripping of sewer-waste into the bay / backwaters. These are the people who get on boats to confront Japanese ships in international waters . Yet , absolutely NONE of them has even said a word, let alone made an effort to go to the Gulf of Mexico. These are not the people who decide their activities, they get activated by their handlers and are always tailed by a fawning media ( believe me, I know). Their silence in this case is defeaning. They are not being activated.
Its highly suspicious.

Obama doesn’t care about the gulf nor about us here in AZ. I’d be first in line to vote if we could vote for impeachment!
GrannySunni on July 2, 2010 at 6:45 PM
Let us remember. The Obama administration wanted, still wants to make it very very difficult to fish federal waters. Also, the administration has expanded the definition of federal waters greatly.
Keeping 90% of the shrimp fleet at the dock with payments that are about 250% higher than what they’d make normally is a slow death to the domestic seafood industry.
There are PLENTY of areas open for these guys to fish, yeah, they may have to move up or down coast a ways, but if we’re going to throw money at them, it should be for accommodations in Galveston and dock fees so they can be out there catching fish and shrimp in waters without oil.
The domestic processors are dying at an increasing rate as they burn through reserves. Domestic frozen supply of shrimp and fish is almost exhausted and cutting and packing operations are closing. Imports are increasing along with price flowing more dollars out of the U.S. into other hands.
Worst of all, is the JOKE that is the Vessels of Opportunity program and the idea that we’re training shrimpers a few hours on the beach to go corral oil slicks with booms in coordination over vast areas in the slowest craft available. Seriously, those slicks that are spotted by air are long gone by the time a lugger makes it’s way out there after being tracked down by cell phone and after the captain rounds up some boom and crewmen.
On the other hand, the navy has hundreds and hundreds of the perfect vessels for this type of work. You’d think that maybe even these craft were specifically designed for this type of work. Those crewmen are trained and at the ready with state of the art communications and GPS gear all networked into a command center.
Instead we have Sammy the Shrimper, his cellphone, his TomTom, his very very slow boat, and his crew that got hazmat training in the convenience store parking lot by a guy from the EPA, fresh out of college, based in Washington, who’s never been to sea in a craft smaller than a cruiseship.
No offense to Sammy the Shrimper. I love you guys, but you need to be out fishing. The government should be helping you get out there to fish.
The Navy should be directing the clean-up and using the equipment the American taxpayer already bought.
The Navy should be in charge of the whole she-bang at this point. They are honestly the only ones capable of coordinating something of this scale on the high seas.

mrt721 on July 2, 2010 at 7:13 PM
I’m beginning to think it isn’t a “failure of leadership” at all, but deliberate obstruction. If the Gulf state economies are destroyed (red states that didn’t vote for Obama, btw), their people become hostage to government handouts, and, the conventional Democrat wisdom goes, likely to vote for more government and the nationalization of the oil industry.
This is the most power-hungry administration in American history.
RebeccaH on July 2, 2010 at 7:43 PM
The Navy does what it is told by Hussein. They are not there because Hussein does not want them there.
This is Hussein’s opportunity to not only destroy at least one major oil company, but also the entire oil exploration infrastructure, the gulf commercial and sport fishing industries, the region’s tourist industries and associated businesses. In short, it is about impoverishing a whole section of the country, much as the effort to turn the land border regions into drug cartel run regions.
This is Hussein’s greatest most shinny momment to further reduce the US to the “level playing field” he so greatly admires… all the true radical socialists, like the enviros and the Hollywood crowd, are silent, watching this like it was the biggest payday for them ever…
“They came for me, now it is your turn…”

Not to burst your bubble, but there have been serious issues with this well since at least as early as Feb. The Fed Gvt was informed of these issues by as early as Feb 20, I believe.
B. Hussein Obama did not come out with his expansion of exploration until after this.
I am willing to believe that he did indeed plan on something serious happening here, and used it to political advantage. He can now say “Hey, I wanted to increase production, until this terrible accident occurred, but now I cannot in good conscience do so.” It fits the pattern, and practice that he has established in his career very nicely.

First off, the democrat party and the Media should apologize to George W. Bush for the bashing and it continues even today of his handling of Katrina. The problem with Katrina started with the lack of local leadership. Which by the way were democrats. I believe as others who have posted that Obama and the democrats are using this to pass more of their socialist agenda. They could care less about the people of the States affected but they can use them as victims to get Cap & Trade passed.
