Too bad to check: NRA thinking of endorsing Reid over Sharron Angle?

posted at 4:50 pm on July 1, 2010 by Allahpundit

Not as far-fetched as it might seem. Just last year, they sent a letter to their Nevada members urging them to thank Reid for publicly opposing reinstating the assault-weapons ban. But that was then and this is now, and knowing which way their national membership skews politically — and how activist-minded conservatives have become since tea-party fever took hold — would they dare endorse the guy grassroots righties most desperately want to replace in November?

Gonna lose a lot of donations if you do, folks.

Now, I’m getting credible reports that the NRA is leaning toward endorsing Harry Reid, even though the NRA is finally saying it will score a vote on Kagan — something that was not a sure thing.

Why would they do this? Why would they go out of their way to protect a Senator who has demonstrated a repeated hostility to the Second Amendment in his votes and his leadership?

Well, I thought perhaps the NRA carveout in the DISCLOSE Act might be the answer. But, there is more. It turns out, Reid secured a $61 million earmark for a gun range in Clark County, Nevada…

But, here is the problem. Reid has not supported the Second Amendment “every day.” Or ever.

Reid has a lifetime rating of “F” from Gun Owners of America (who Ron Paul once called “the only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington”). GOA is actively supporting the 100% pro-gun Republican nominee, Sharron Angle, in her campaign to unseat Harry Reid.

Follow the link up top for a list of anti-gun votes cast by Reid. Jim Geraghty plays devil’s advocate:

Believe me, I’ve had this sort of discussion many times. An argument put to me is that the Second Amendment would be better protected with a Senate that had, say, 52 Democrats led by pro-gun Harry Reid than 51 Democrats led by the most likely alternatives, Chuck Schumer or Dick Durbin. Since the chances of Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell are not great, it is in the best interest of the NRA and its members to have the most pro-gun Democratic Senate majority leader they can get.

Translation: He ain’t great but he’s the NRA’s best option under the circumstances. I’d add that it might be especially important to them to have Reid there right now in the wake of the Supreme Court’s latest decision on gun rights. I fully expect crime will drop as gun bans in major cities like Chicago are relaxed (a bit), but there are a lot of variables that go into that and the NRA surely knows that an aggressively anti-gun majority leader will look to capitalize if violence ticks upward anywhere initially. Reid, because he has to worry about votes in rural Nevada, is a better bet than Schumer or Durbin not to bring anything too dicey to the Senate floor. Then again, it’s a mortal lock that the GOP will have more seats next year than they do now. Given the terror felt by moderates like Olympia Snowe after Bob Bennett was ousted by tea partiers in Utah, how would any sort of anti-gun bill avoid a filibuster? Reid struggled for weeks to get to 60 on financial reform despite having 59 seats; how’s he going to get to 60 on a new assault-weapons ban when he has only 53 or 54?

What’s worrisome about this rumor, actually, is that it may show how little confidence the NRA has in an Angle victory. She’s up seven at last check, but the kookier elements of her resume have been trickling out from lefty media. Wait until late summer when Reid turns on the advertising hose full force. Maybe LaPierre and co. figure there’s no sense in antagonizing a guy whom they think is bound to win. It’ll be interesting to see if they end up simply avoiding this race altogether and endorsing no one.

Via Red State, here’s video from April of Reid and LaPierre at that earmarked gun range.

Allahpundit,

My hypothesis is that the NRA, after Heller and McDonald, has figured out that there is no need to be so joined-at-the-hip with Conservatism, Inc, and are thus free to endorse along the lines that benefit its membership. We greatly underestimate how much the NRA lost by continually signing up for everything Grover Norquist cooked up at those Wednesday meeting, all in order to find refuge from the Lefty siege they were enduring through most of the last 20 years.

It could be worse, Allahpundit: Just think of what would’ve happened if Bart Stupak hadn’t stabbed the Pro-Life movement in the back over the Obamacare issue.

NRA endorses re-election of Sen. Reid, D-Nev.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

RENO, Nev. (AP) – Democratic Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada picked up the endorsement Wednesday of the political action committee for the largest gun rights group in the country, the National Rifle Association.

“My legislative record in the United States Senate reflects my dedication to representing the views of Nevadans when it comes to responsible gun ownership and it is gratifying the NRA has recognized my efforts,” said Reid, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate.

BradSchwartze on July 1, 2010 at 5:00 PM

The only problem with this analysis is that party affiliation matters, and an organization like the NRA should be sophisticated enough to know that. Every time they help a dem get elected, they help create a congressional majority that wants to take away gun rights. Yeah, maybe Reid votes their way once in awhile, but that is just trickery to keep himself elected. What if he decides this is his last 6 years? Then he doesn’t care about gun rights and will help pass gun bans.

This is not deep strategic thinking on the NRA’s part, but a leftward shift that has been observable for some time.

Monkeytoe on July 1, 2010 at 5:06 PM

This should not be surprising. The NRA focuses on gun rights. That’s their one issue. The way they keep politicians on their side is that they don’t play favorites among the parties so neither one writes them off as in the bag for the other team. [This is something monolithic voting blocs don't seem to get and then complain they get taken for granted.]

The NRA’s policy is to back the pro-gun rights candidate. If both candidates are seen to be pro-gun rights then they default to endorsing the incumbent. My home in PA is represented by a Democrat who replaced a Republican some years back. They backed the GOP candidate until the Dem won and then endorsed him in later elections because he was the new incumbent and was pro-gun rights.

Please Lord, let Angle defeat Reid.

As a side note, I’m an NRA member and receive their American Rifleman monthly. In the latest issue, Harry Reid is praised for being a supporter of gun rights and is shown cutting the ribbon at a new gun range in Nevada. They recently gave the late Senator Murtha similar praise for being Pro-second Amendment. The NRA is getting close to losing a member.

NRA leadership seems unable to weigh the load of crap these politicians dish out versus the one, admittedly important, issue of Second Amendment rights. Angle is an ardent supporter of our right to keep and bear arms and deserving of NRA support, which makes the positive publicity they give scum like Reid in an election year even more despicable.

A truly stupid argument. Does anybody at the NRA seriously think that next year’s Senate with say, 48 Republicans, would ever pass a gun ban over a filibuster?

In all but the bluest of states (maybe New England) gun control is truly radioactive as an issue–even John Kerry made a big show of shooting a goose in Ohio in 2004. Its. Not. Gonna. Happen.

There are PLENTY of good reasons to dump Harry Reid, and gun-owners in Nevada probably agree with most of them. How many liberal gun-owners are there who would be swayed by such an arguement?

Senator Reid said in early 2007 that “the war in Iraq is lost.” Gun owners need to re-establish their Second Amendment right, supported by Maverick McCain, to shoot Al Qaeda terrorists in Anbar Province.

WitchDoctor on July 1, 2010 at 5:55 PM

Let ‘em. If they do, they’ll be destroyed, and deservedly so. An organization will rise up to replace them, and probably permanently. I can’t see guys like Ted Nugent supporting a weasel like Harry Reid, or anybody else connected to Obama, or just anybody that just plain isn’t a Conservative. Donations will dry up, and they may even see lawsuits demanding money back, just as Crist is, as people don’t want their funds going to supporting lying political hacks, like Reid. The left will sit back and laugh at the self-destruction and extermination of the NRA (as will I), but they won’t be too happy to see the even harder-core replacement rise up in the NRA’s place. Me, personally, I’ve already turned on the NRA, and I will never look back. They backed bad legislation, in order to get themselves an exception, and now they’re looking to pat an enemy of America on the back and reward him with political power. If they’re actually falling for this McCainesque election cycle kabuki-BS, then the NRA deserve to be killed off, just for that. Screw ‘em.

Many of its members are conservative. But that does not mean and should not mean that the NRA is for conservatives only. It would be a large mistake to make the NRA into a Republicans-only club. I don’t think Reid is as good a pro-NRA vote as the NRA thinks, but the NRA should be endorsing candidates that aid its agenda, whether or not they are conservative too.

Same old politics as usual. Money talks.
