Survey of historians: Obama the 15th greatest president of all time
posted at 8:28 pm on July 1, 2010 by Allahpundit
In office for barely two years, Obama entered the survey in the 15th position – two spots behind Bill Clinton and three spots ahead of Ronald Reagan.
Obama got high marks for intelligence, ability to communicate and imagination, but his score was dragged down by his relative lack of experience and family background…
[T]he scholars rated Dubya a dud as a president, ranking him in the bottom five at 39th place…
Bush got docked for saddling Obama with two bloody wars and a recession, and he got low marks for “ability to compromise, foreign policy
accomplishments and intelligence,” according to the survey.Only Warren G. Harding, who was 41st on the list, scored lower in the intelligence category.
Full results in PDF form here. The One came eighth overall in intelligence, right ahead of Billy Jeff, and sixth overall in the category of, ummm, “imagination.” Reagan finished fifth overall in terms of communication abilities (two spots ahead of Obama) and third in “luck,” which I can only take to be a thinly veiled judgment that the demise of the U.S.S.R. after he left office is more coincidence than cause and effect. He also gets the “amiable dunce” treatment, placing 36 out of 43 in intelligence. But don’t take it to heart. This is obviously a poll of lefty academics, with only one Republican from the 20th century (Eisenhower) appearing in the top 15. How ridiculous is it? Number one in the category of “handling the economy” is … FDR. Somewhere, Amity Shlaes is smiling.
Oh, almost forgot: The requisite sanctification of JFK is in full force here too. He placed 11th in intelligence, just above George Washington(!) and 18 slots ahead of Ulysses S. Grant, who was not only brilliant on the battlefield but who churned out one of the great memoirs in American history (highly praised by Mark Twain, among many others) while he was dying of cancer. But hey — JFK looked great on camera, so there you go.

In an American Presidency class, in high school, we learned to evaluate the first term of presidents, excluding Washington (who had a country to build,) and Lincoln (who had a country to save,) according to two simple tests:
1. How much of their campaign agenda did they get through the congress?
2. How well did they communicate a lasting vision of what they wanted?
Based on these tests, rank the following, who appear below in order of service:
TR
Wilson
FDR
Truman
Eisenhower
JFK
Nixon
Reagan
Clinton
GW Bush

You don’t even need a degree in the field you’re lecturing ! For Obama to continue to allow that out and out LIE to continue is comparable to a Navy “corpseman” being called a Rear Admiral. This story really tells a lot about the mental capacity of today’s historians. As Baxter chronicles so well above, (Baxter Greene on July 1, 2010 at 11:54 PM), the man has been nothing but an abysmal failure, and yet his throng of academic misanthropes’ find riding on Halley’s comet as some kind of historic value.

As someone whose collegiate study was an emphasis on American history, I can say with some certainty that will all change as times goes by. Bush will eventually climb much higher. Obama will drop dramatically when the final story is written. There is no way a guy who is Jimmy Carter, Part II, is 15th. I am thinking more like 43rd. If he wasn’t half black, there is no way that he would rate any higher than the bottom third at this time of his time in office.
I refuse to call him “President”. It lowers the title too far.

hachiban on July 2, 2010 at 1:30 AM
Not that I mind they docked Obama in a couple categories at least, but what do these really have to do with being a great president, especially the bolded? That and the obvious question, how can you rate the presidency of a man who has been president for less than 18 months?
I think we are only know getting around to the point where we can judge Carter and Reagan. It’s going to be a couple more decades at least before Bush and Obama can begin to be properly judged.
I wouldn’t be surprised if AP meant the last 100 years (which TR would not be in). For almost 20 years “the last hundred years” and “the 20th Century” were largely the same. Heck I still have problems saying things that happend in 19XX happened last century.
jarodea on July 2, 2010 at 1:34 AM
In a nutshell. I’d like to know the length of time between the sending the questionaire and the responses.
Who takes the time to meticulously rank 43 individuals in such vague categories as “luck”, “imagination” and “intelligence”? No bah dee, that’s who. Least of all, self-proclaimed “presidential scholars”.
Interesting that J.Q. Adams and G.W. Bush have remarkably similar backgrounds, yet Adams ranks #2 and Bush #36 in the “Background (Family/Education/History)” category.
And since when, in America, did we start asking people about pedigree? I recall an inspiring story from an immigrant who said that America was the first place he’d ever lived where no one asked him who his father was.
I’ve long thought that Academics are just students who were afraid to leave school. Now I’m sure that, in their shame, they’ve also become “academic elitists” afraid to admit the shame of their uselessness to society.
Carter, for instance, ranks #20 at “Court appointees”. Carter never had the chance to nominate a Supreme Court Justice.
Reagan, on the other hand, ranks #31 in the “Court Appointees” category despite nominating Justices Scalia and O’Connor and elevating Renquist to Chief Justice.
So, these “scholars” are not just slackers, they’ve also, obviously, got their fingers in their ears while shouting, “La!La!La! Can’t hear you!”
Our tax dollars at work.

Speakup on July 2, 2010 at 2:56 AM
Those “scholars” to be kind are a bunch of idiots.
Had Washington been a lesser man, I doubt there would have been any Presidents to follow, or any Presidents period.
Had Washington not taken the job, one he was very reluctant to take and even more reluctant to undertake for a second term, one of two men would have become President, the very two men who would follow him into office, Adams or Jefferson.
Had Adams or Jefferson been first, without eight years of Washington laying the foundations for The Republic, either one of those two could have destroyed it with their partisanship and hubris. (And in the case of Jefferson, gross naivete when in came to proper defense of the persons and property of The People and the very sovereignty of The Republic.)
The Top 5…
1. Washington: See above.
2. Lincoln: Again, had a lesser man held the post at that moment in time, The Republic could not have survived.
3. Reagan: Another “Right Man at The Right Time”. Restored hope and faith in America to Americans trying to come to terms with the catastrophe of the 60’s and 70’s.
4. George W. Bush: In time, even the slowest amongst us will recognize that, while far from perfect, he was, unquestionably, the only man capable of doing the job under the circumstances he was thrust into. Oh yeah, and unlike Obama, he never blamed all his problems on the jackoff he succeeded in office.
5. Calvin Coolidge: Maybe I rank him this high based purely on the premise that a man who spoke so rarely seems like such a refreshing change from so many of the vain jackasses who spoke/speak so much and say so little that have come since. (FDR, Truman, LBJ, Carter, Clinton, Big Zero…)
The Bottom 5…
40. LBJ: His Great Society and his Vietnam strategy are both proven losers. Spectacular failures both.
41. Harry Truman: Gave away China to the reds, guaranteeing a Korean War, then committed the nation to fight that war, then decided that winning that war didn’t really matter and threw in the towel, leaving behind two of the greatest threats to our nation today.
42. Andrew Jackson: Genocidal, racist freak and petty tyrant. No wonder modern Dems see him as the father of their party…
43. FDR: America’s most beloved and celebrated would-be dictator and apologist for Stalin. With a nod of his head, condemned half of Europe to almost fifty years of Soviet tyranny and slavery to communism. That and the surviving elements of his New Deal will, inevitably, bankrupt the nation.
44. Obama: Simply put, he’s the most incompetent man ever to hold the office of the Presidency and without question, harbors the most contempt for the American people of any man ever to hold the office of the Presidency. History will not remember him well.
SuperCool on July 2, 2010 at 3:08 AM
I see what the criteria is: Most socialist and authoritarian = Greatest. So FDR is of course the best. Obama is only 15th because he’s disappointing the progressives, so far.
Every other spot is thrown in to lend credibility to the over-arching socialist/authoritarian criteria. I’m half-surprised King George III didn’t top the list. I noticed that Obama rates just one slot higher than LBJ. When will Obama’s Kent State take place?

From an article about this I read yesterday in the Washington Times, the poll was taken among ACADEMICS. Which means Leftwing Socialist-dependent people who live by means of academia’s version of unions funded greatly by taxpayer money.
So of course they’re going to go for the other Socialists. They voted Roosevelt as favorite, too.
It’s just a case of Socialists finding the Biggest Socialists in the Presidency (Roosevelt, Obama, Carter, etc.) as most popular and the Capitalists the least popular.
Hardly an unbiased poll.

He is unable to make decisions and incapable of accepting the fact that he does make mistakes. Ask the public and I mean the public that has an IQ above room temperature the qualities of this man.

This ranking tells you that “historians” in academia are left wing ideologues and not to be taken seriously.
Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter belong at the bottom. George W. Bush and Warren Harding do not.
FDR was not the greatest President. His New Deal years were unsuccessful; it is his war years as Commander in Chief that puts him near the top, but not above George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
Ronald Reagan deserves being in the top 10. John F. Kennedy does not deserve being in the top 15.
