MSNBC anchor: Damn, that Obama immigration speech gave me chills

posted at 5:32 pm on July 1, 2010 by Allahpundit

A quickie but goodie via Mark Finkelstein of Newsbusters. I’m glad she dug the speech because she was, after all, the target audience: This was as pure a sop to his base as you’ll ever see from The One, offered as a consolation prize to progressives and Latinos in lieu of an amnesty deal this year. He can’t give them action so instead he’ll give them chills, in hopes that they won’t hold his broken promise to do something about immigration against Democrats (especially Harry Reid) in the fall.

As I’ve said before, it’s usually easy to tell when he doesn’t much care about the subject he’s addressing. And today it was easy:

When a president recites Emma Lazarus in a speech on immigration—and recites not merely a fragment or two but virtually the entire length of “the New Colossus”—one is inclined to conclude that his speech was
written by someone who has just graduated from high school and has a young head brimming with social studies. This being President Obama, however, one can conclude that he will have written a fair portion of the speech himself, and, in so concluding, one would be struck forcefully by how banal the speech was. It was, if one can say such a thing, the acme of boilerplate, so utterly conventional was it in its narrative of American immigration.

America, a nation of immigrants? Check. Hardworking people who come here only to improve their lives, and those of their families? Check. Being American isn’t a matter only of blood and birth? Check. The system is broken? Check. The need for reform? Check.

Right — and to top it all off, O actually ended up misquoting Lazarus’s most famous line. The transcript of the speech is available at the White House website, but I’ll save you some time and quote the most incendiary platitude here. Remember how ObamaCare’s troubles in passing Congress were all the fault of the GOP even back when Democrats had a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate? Well, guess what:

So we’ve made progress. I’m ready to move forward; the majority of Democrats are ready to move forward; and I believe the majority of Americans are ready to move forward. But the fact is, without bipartisan support, as we had just a few years ago, we cannot solve this problem. Reform that brings accountability to our immigration system cannot pass without Republican votes. That is the political and mathematical reality. The only way to reduce the risk that this effort will again falter because of politics is if members of both parties are willing to take responsibility for solving this problem once and for all.

And, yes, this is an emotional question, and one that lends itself to demagoguery. Time and again, this issue has been used to divide and inflame -– and to demonize people. And so the understandable, the natural impulse among those who run for office is to turn away and defer this question for another day, or another year, or another administration. Despite the courageous leadership in the past shown by many Democrats and some Republicans — including, by the way, my predecessor, President Bush -– this has been the custom. That is why a broken and dangerous system that offends our most basic American values is still in place.

It’s all the GOP’s fault, a talking point echoed today by Gibbs in the briefing. Except that, according to Democrat Luis Gutierrez — who’s as pure an amnesty shill as there is in Congress — there actually aren’t enough Democrats either in favor of comprehensive immigration reform to pass something. (And he doesn’t just mean in the Senate.) As with so many policies championed by The One, it’s the opposition, not the support, that’s bipartisan.

He also dumped on Arizona’s law, of course, calling it “unenforceable” without explaining why that isn’t any more or less true of federal immigration law. Or maybe that was the point: From the feds’ perspective, all immigration law these days is “unenforceable.” Two clips for you below, the first of “chills” at MSNBC and the second of highlights from the speech.

Blowback

More like “wontenforceable”.

But good news…we know there are at least 4 votes in SCOTUS that support the idea that the people of a state should be allowed to make their own laws, even if it violates some obscure footnote in the Constitution.

I agree immigrants (legal ones) are a good thing. Being a citizen is more than birth but attitude. But we need to start enforcing our laws to fine employers who hire illegals. That, and only that, will end the problem.

I do not want to tear families apart. I do not want to conduct mass deportations. I just want to remove the incentive of why they come–jobs.

What I don’t get about all this–not Obama’s speech, I’ve given up listening to him–is that why Hispanic citizens insist on putting ethnic considerations ahead of the good of and the law of the country? Is it too much to expect that they be citizens first and ethnic entities second?

Disturb the Universe on July 1, 2010 at 5:45 PM

The illegals sneaking into this country, stealing jobs, killing our citizens, smuggling drugs, taking over cities, acting as snipers against our own law enforcement and border agents are NOT welcome in this nation.

My family came here from Germany, they escaped the Nazi’s. Their names are proudly engraved on Ellis Island. They rode the boat and endured the trip and went through the process of legal immigration and went on to build a good life.

Obey the law.

Key West Reader on July 1, 2010 at 5:45 PM

Crime has risen from thefts and assaults.Tons of drunk driving and no licenses. Our food banks are drained by them. Never any questions asked. The schools and hospitals here? Don’t get me started. I’m speaking of illegals not Hispanic citizens. It never ceases to amaze me that legal immigrants aren’t angry that the illegals are vying for their jobs. makes no sense.

So if the AZ law SB1070 is really ” unenforceable” why is Hussain so shamelessly going around scaring people ? Why doesn’t he just say to illegals ” hey, that AZ law can never be enforced, so don’t worry ” .
He calls himself some kind of a lawyer but he is fear mongering about a law which hasn’t even been implemented yet. What is he basing his scare tactics on ?

The truth is that
AZ law IS enforceable, and it WILL achieve what the people of AZ want it to. Illegals know it, Calderon knows it and Oblahblah knows it. Thats why they are Alinskying it , they know it will work and they don’t have any legal / moral / ethical / logical argument against it.

Oh, puke.

Obama can’t even get the history straight. No one in the United States had to PAY for the Statue of Liberty. The statue was a fabulous GIFT from the people of France to the freedom loving people of America.

America had to raise funds for a pedestal upon which to place this gorgeous work of art. The poem wasn’t written to pay for the statue, it was written as part of a contest held to pay for the pedestal.

Obama is so ignorant of history that he read the teleprompter without so much as a wince at the goofy stuff he was spouting.

And then, on top of this, Obama misquoted the poem.

WHAT a genius.

The notion of ‘reforming the system’ is nothing more than a stall tactic.
It allows those who’ve failed us (in enforcing our borders) to get away with it.
They’ve failed to follow through on the policies already set into place, and we’re supposed to believe that they’ll follow through on the new policies they’ll create?
They’re blaming the illegal influx on the system and policies when in reality it rests squarely on their inaction to uphold and enforce those policies.

And anyone who stood and applauded while Calderon was spewing his garbage to Congress should be tossed out.

======================================================

Unemployment and the Immigration Glut
—————————————

With 10% unemployment, one would think that the government would consider lowering the number of green cards issued to foreign workers until Americans were back on their feet. Amazingly, recently released data from the Department of Homeland Security shows that we have actually increased immigration. Far from reflecting supply and demand, our legal immigration numbers continue to climb no matter the state of the national economy.
———————————

The latest figures come from fiscal year 2009. The fiscal year began on October 1, 2008, which is when our economic collapse began and continued through September of 2009. Over five million Americans lost their jobs over that period

America issued 1,130,818 permanent green cards, 808,478 of which were given to immigrants of working age. This is an increase over 2008 and 2007. Excluding the extra green cards given after the 1986 amnesty, this was the second highest number of green cards issued since 1914. From 2000 though 2009, we issued 10,299,430—the highest decade in American history.

..when we get off our collective asses, start working for candidates who will neuter him in 2010 and for a candidate who will take this incompetent, dim-witted, sh*t-sucking, hatchet-assed, metro-sexual bag of lizard puss out in 2012.

I am sick of hearing we need comprehensive immigration reform. Why? We have laws now. What exactly do they need to change?

People talk about the great contributions immigrants have made. Yes, legal and skilled immigrants. I very much doubt the day laborer standing outside Home Depot has the cure for AIDS in his back pocket.
amerpundit on July 1, 2010 at 5:39 PM

I was discussing the unlikelyhood that the above would provide any great contributions to society and my friend from Waco added that they have a better chance of killing the person who may cure cancer etc

had to laugh

As you have said, the laws need to be enforced, which,Obama
refuses to do,I think the change part,is that Obama is
after this so-called Social Justice theme,I guess!!:)

Southern Gent: Did you see this squib re Lindsey Graham by Daniel Foster in “The Corner”?

Lindsey Graham + New York Times = Uh-Oh [Daniel Foster]

There is a profile of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) in the new New York Times magazine — it’s by Robert Draper (author of the Dubya book Dead Certain) and is called “This Year’s Maverick.” If you didn’t know anything else about the piece, you’d probably be safe to surmise it won’t play well with the Jim DeMint crowd in South Carolina.

And sure enough, Graham says things like this, about the tea party:

“Everything I’m doing now in terms of talking about climate, talking about immigration, talking about Gitmo is completely opposite of where the Tea Party movement’s at,” Graham said as Cato drove him to the city of Greenwood, where he was to give a commencement address at Lander University later that morning. On four occasions, Graham met with Tea Party groups. The first, in his Senate office, was “very, very contentious,” he recalled. During a later meeting, in Charleston, Graham said he challenged them: “ ‘What do you want to do? You take back your country — and do what with it?’ . . . Everybody went from being kind of hostile to just dead silent.”

In a previous conversation, Graham told me: “The problem with the Tea Party, I think it’s just unsustainable because they can never come up with a coherent vision for governing the country. It will die out.” Now he said, in a tone of casual lament: “We don’t have a lot of Reagan-type leaders in our party. Remember Ronald Reagan Democrats? I want a Republican that can attract Democrats.” Chortling, he added, “Ronald Reagan would have a hard time getting elected as a Republican today.”

Even worse, Graham gets praise heaped upon him from the dread Rahm Emanuel:

The White House logs do not record visits paid by U.S. senators. According to his office’s records, however, Lindsey Graham has been to the West Wing 19 times since Barack Obama became president. When I asked the White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, if any other Republican senator was so frequent a guest, he thought for a moment before responding, rather doubtfully, “Maybe Susan Collins.”

Emanuel went on to say: “He’s willing to work on more things than the others. Lindsey, to his credit, has a small-government vision that’s out of fashion with his party, which stands for no government. . . . He’s one of the last big voices to give that vision intellectual energy.”

Yeesh.

Would someone take him to the woodshed. Please.

Obama is a fraud.

But immigration restrictions have their roots in the Progressive Era folks. Hello? Are conservatives here Jeffersonians or just a bunch of Woodrow Wilson Prussians?
