Famously right-wing news org: Obama administration blocking media access to Gulf response

posted at 10:12 am on July 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Well, who’s going to believe Fox News when they complain about access to the federal response in the Gulf?  After all, they’re nothing more than a part of the right-wing noise machine, right?  Why, I’ll bet that Sean Hannity has — er, what?  It’s not Fox News?  Must be the New York Post, then.  Rupert Murdoch wants to destroy the Obama presidency — oh, wait, it’s not the Post either.  Nor is it the Wall Street Journal or Andrew Breitbart complaining that the feds are restricting media access to their response in this crisis.  In fact, it’s …. PBS?

But there’s one roadblock that we encountered that mystified us — and, we understand, many other journalists. It has been virtually impossible to get any information about the federal mobile medical unit in the fishing town of Venice, La. The glorified double-wide trailer sits on a spit of newly graveled land known to some as the “BP compound.” Ringed with barbed wire-topped chain link fencing, it’s tightly restricted by police and private security guards.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services set up the facility on May 31. According to a press release, the medical unit is staffed by “a medical team from the HHS National Disaster Medical System — a doctor, two nurses, two emergency medical technician paramedics (EMT-P) and a pharmacist.”

For over two weeks, my NewsHour colleagues and I reached out to media contacts at HHS, the U.S. Coast Guard and everyone listed as a possible media contact for BP, in an attempt to visit the unit and get a general sense of how many people were being treated there , who they were and what illnesses they had. We got nowhere. It was either “access denied,” or no response at all. It was something that none of us had ever encountered while covering a disaster. We’re usually at some point provided access to the health services being offered by the federal government.

We tried the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals who told us to talk to HHS. HHS said they couldn’t provide us access and said they would get back to us about our questions.

We reached out to local parish officials, who told us to talk to Unified Command Center Operations. Unified Command Center Operations told us to talk to HHS… noticing a pattern here?

We certainly have noticed a pattern.  Ever since Barack Obama took office, the White House has claimed to provide “the most transparent administration ever.”  Instead, we’re seeing new frontiers in opacity.  Lobbyists refuse to disclose $40,000 payoffs when they take jobs in the administration, the President refuses to hold press conferences, key officials hold meetings at Caribou Coffee with lobbyists to avoid disclosure, and use private e-mail to evade the Official Records Act.

For all of the faults of the Katrina response, the media had full access to it from the beginning.  Unless the White House needs to declare a quarantine and an epidemic of some disease in the Gulf, the media should have access to this emergency response as well.  But at least the White House isn’t alone in hiding its failure, and the media aren’t the only people being kept out, as J.E. Dyer notes in the Green Room today:

This is hilarious.  Suddenly, the House Democrats are rewriting the rules for funded travel because a group of Republicans (and one Democrat) wants to visit the Gulf in July.  Well, “rewriting” makes it sound like something official and accountable is going on.  “Remaking it up as they go along” would apparently be more accurate.

The New Orleans news site Nola reports that the Democratic leadership in Congress won’t allow members to use their official accounts to pay for travel to the Gulf and to assess the administration’s response for themselves:

House members who had planned to travel to Louisiana next week for a tour and meetings on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill being organized by Rep. Steve Scalise won’t be able to tap their member accounts to cover the costs, the Republican congressman said he was told Tuesday.

The travel would appear to be to in the category of “general oversight” into an issue in which several committees have already been authorized for member visits to the Gulf Coast, said Kyle Anderson, spokesman for House Administration Committee Chairman Robert Brady, D-Pa. Such trips, Brady said, are “not eligible for payment from the financial accounts” that finance members’ offices. …

California Rep. Dan Lungren, the top Republican on the House Administration Committee, said barring “some extraordinary reason to prohibit this trip,” which he said hasn’t been communicated to anybody on the Republican side, “this is an unacceptable departure from past practices.”

“This is an educational trip for members using their own representational budgets to see, firsthand, the devastating impact of the Gulf spill,” Lungren said. “Our travel regulations permit this type of travel in support of our official representational duties, and unfortunately, this disaster is already having environmental and economical implications for the entire country, not just those districts represented by members sitting on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.”

The Scalise trip, scheduled for July 9, was to include a breakfast overview of the spill in New Orleans, a flight over the Louisiana coast, a meeting with local officials on Grand Isle and a boat tour of outer islands to see how the spill has affected wildlife.

Clearly, Democrats don’t want the media or our elected officials to see what’s happening in the Gulf, and it’s about time people started demanding an answer from them for it.  When PBS can’t get into the response effort, something is being covered up.

Update: I’m going to use Glenn Reynolds’ line here: “They told me if I voted for John McCain that the press would get silenced and the executive branch would block accountability.  And they were right!”

There are whispers that people are in fact getting ill from the spill, rashes, etc. I had a video that I found of a Louisiana woman named Kindra Arneson who is in the fishing business. She was featured on PBS back on June 23rd. The video is now scrubbed.

It was 15 minutes long but she apparently was able to get into several official meetings with BP and the Coast Guard/Feds about what is going on; she also laments the fact that people are sick and the feds are covering it up. She also mentioned these “health” trailers and was incensed because BP’s first concern was cutting costs.

Oh well, it’s gone, but it was a PBS feature so at least SOMEONE is trying to find out WTH is going on down there.

Nothing against Wyoming, just trying to use an example of a far-away state which has nothing directly to do with the crisis.

The “cleanup” that you see happening is a total farce.

Key West Reader on July 1, 2010 at 10:29 AM

You see .. the HHS National Disaster Medical System has the US economic recovery on life support in this trailer. The future of this nation’s fiscal health is at stake .. the underlying support for “Recovery Summer” is clinging to guns and religion in the “BP compound.”
The last thing they need is to have PBS come in and expose the “economic recovery” for outside contamination.

After a quick search, crude oil contains various hydrocarbons, metals, and organic chemicals. I’m not sure how dangerous. Sources are surprisingly quiet.

Not that crude oil itself is wonderfully nutritious. If only there were large industrial skimming ships which could quickly get this stuff out of the ocean and return mostly clean water.

Beagle on July 1, 2010 at 10:35 AM

The cover-up/media blackout began the second the rig exploded.

With nearly daily examples of this governments “Area 51″ approach to the Gulf, you’d think Hotair would be doing more to expose it. Last I checked, it is still the No. 1 read conservative blog, and is read by politicians and policy makers alike.

Other bloggers with research capacity could also do alot more to establish a record of fact. Obama wants to maintain deniability in his purposeful and willful neglect of the Gulf.

Don’t let him.

2) Dear Liar’s administration blocking international offers of help in cleaning up the spill/

3) Dear Liar’s administration blocking moving of national oil spill response material, ostensibly on “they may be needed elsewhere” grounds.

4) Dear Liar’s administration blocking LA. from using sand berms to block oil from reaching shore, creating a huge environmental problem, because there might be some environmental harm.

5) Dear Liar’s administration blocking news organizations from going to ground zero and reporting on the oil spill.

So who’s the real villain here?

I read that a congress critter wanted to hire an aircraft to over-fly the spill area and was denied permission by the Coast Guard. Now, that raises an interesting question. Since when could the U.S. Coast Guard deny anyone permission to fly over an area of INTERNATIONAL WATER? Anyone who has lived in Florida, and I presume any other coastal state, can tell you if you’re out of sight of land you’re pretty much under International Air Space. International. Doesn’t that mean that it’s, well, International? Maybe now that PBS has joined the “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” we’ll be getting to the bottom of this incident.

I can probably help with logistic support if you’re headed anywhere along the LA coast.

Hell, don’t even restrict yourself to the actual coast itself if they keep bringing up the possibility of diverting a ton of water from the Atchafalaya in order to raise the flow on the Mississippi and push the oil away from the mouth of the river.

Doing that means that the Atchafalaya and many of the wetlands that come off of it will be completely SOL and increase the ecological damage to LA.

Key West Reader on July 1, 2010 at 11:08 AM

I wonder when/if the media will finally turn on Obama and his administration?

Archimedes on July 1, 2010 at 11:08 AM

There you go again…logical and thoughtful forward-planning…must be a CONSERVATIVE!

Seriously, I’ve been thinking for weeks about going down and helping…media attention ala Breitbart would be a decisive factor.

(SF Gate)It turns out that San Francisco’s eco-conscious Mayor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, own a piece of the deepwater rig at the center of the gulf oil disaster.
According to the mayor’s most recently filed economic disclosure statement, last year the couple invested between $10,000 and $100,000 in Transocean Inc. – the company whose ruptured deepwater rig, which is leased to BP, is spewing millions of gallons of oil, endangering wildlife and beaches all along the Gulf Coast.
Just last month, Newsom told the San Diego area East County Magazine that “the environmental catastrophe devastating the Gulf of Mexico is a tragic reminder of why we must take a stand against the oil companies and oppose all offshore drilling off California’s precious coast.”

I guess I need to update my definition of “eco-conscious”

Barry speaking on immigration now.

Already said “I” 15 times in the first two minutes.

TOTUS in good working order.

Barry:

“This administration will not just kick the can down the road”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

fogw on July 1, 2010 at 11:17 AM

Maybe blocking access because of this? I want pictures of all those idle skimmers just like Ray Nagens busses!

This is Barrack Petroleums Waterloo if someone would get hthe pictures and publish the coverup!

Put the pressure on the Dems NOW so that not one is electable this Nov. unless they demand Barrack Hussein Petroleums resignation!

The response could be blamed on imcompetence the coverup cannot!

We need coverage to have impact. Just planting my Gadsen Flag in the sand and cleaning the beach only makes ME feel good…we want to make the criminals feel BAD. Or at least LOOK bad!

The next thing you know…

… Obowma will suspend the elections.

Oh, wait!

Seven Percent Solution on July 1, 2010 at 11:17 AM

Barry talking about how much immigrants are contributing to our vibrant economy.

It’s a pack of lies folks. Nothing new.

fogw on July 1, 2010 at 11:20 AM

I just read this from a friend, but I’m unable to confirm it.

“On June 9th the FAA closed the airspace over the Gulf of Mexico to all unauthorized aircraft. There is now a 200 mile radius dead zone in the Gulf due to the spill.”

Can ANYONE confirm this? I’ve been to the official FAA web site, but I can’t find this.

Hoax? Or fact?

Uh-oh Oboobi is on now, here’s where he springs amnesty on us.

Archimedes on July 1, 2010 at 11:22 AM

In California we are still waiting for the “contributions” Obama said Immigrants are making. Did he use the word illegal? The “contributions” we have seen here are failing schools, closed hospitals and strained welfare rolls. Did I mention crime?

Cindy Munford on July 1, 2010 at 11:22 AM

Indeed. Biting his lip ala Clinton now too. He went on at length about immigrants who contributed so much to our country, but never mentioned that the people named were “legal” immigrants. Oh, and yes, he’s calling the criminals …….. undocumented immigrants.

Fascinating. A POTUS who totalling ignores the law.

Should be impeached.

I cannot afford at this time to do a warm & fuzzy, feel-good effort, vacays are not in my budget right now. That is why we have to put something serious and worth while together.

If we can manage to get some serious footage of of mismanagement and/or malfeasance, we can send a sample to AB’s Big sites and take it from there. Andrew has already shown he is willing to run with anything damaging to the administration and their blatant collusion with their enablers in the MFM.

One step at time, I’ll check the inbox of the above listed acct throughout the day to see if we can make this work.

Archimedes on July 1, 2010 at 11:31 AM

We certainly have noticed a pattern. Ever since Barack Obama took office, the White House has claimed to provide “the most transparent administration ever.” Instead, we’re seeing new frontiers in opacity. Lobbyists refuse to disclose $40,000 payoffs when they take jobs in the administration, the President refuses to hold press conferences, key officials hold meetings at Caribou Coffee with lobbyists to avoid disclosure, and use private e-mail to evade the Official Records Act.

This is very very dangerous water we’re treading now. When the press, and our own elected officials are being denied acess….the First Ammendment is now null, and void. So what’s going to be done about this? More pandering to the wannabe dictator, or fight back for those rights GUARANTEED to us, in the Constitution?
