Video: Palin speaks at CSU Stanislaus

posted at 12:50 pm on June 26, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Sarah Palin finally gave her speech California State University at Stanislaus after a controversy over its contract with the conservative firebrand. Palin started off by joking about the kerfuffle, demanding a bendable straw and a bottle of water at the beginning of the speech. Instead of the usual cheering crowd, CSU Stanislaus provided a polite and appreciative audience, and Palin delivered a speech that fit the venue. She drew connections between the agricultural industry in the area and her family’s work in commercial fishing before launching into a more philosophical review of the nature of liberty. The Right Scoop has the video from the local Fox station’s video stream:

The Merced Sun-Star has a cleaner video of the speech, but TRS’s is perfectly serviceable. The Sun-Star also reported on the event:

Sarah Palin discussed civic education, freedom of speech and her infamous “bendable straws” demand at California State University, Stanislaus, on Friday night.

In a 34-minute speech, she poked fun at controversy sparked by the March announcement she would appear at the public school and the outcry over her confidential contract, a portion of which students said they found in a university Dumpster. …

She repeatedly referenced Ronald Reagan’s optimism. She said she felt a kinship with the farmers in the room because she’s the owner of a family fishing business.

She called for a return to common sense in the country and took President Obama to task for what she sees as soft views on the war on terror and immigration.

“We must embrace our entrepreneurial drive, and allow America to remain the world’s standard-bearer for excellence,” she said.
Palin took a shot at those who have launched an investigation into the finances of the university’s nonprofit foundation in response to her confidential contract.

“Attorney General Jerry Brown and friends, this is California, do you really not have anything better to do?”

The Sun-Star also reported that around a hundred protesters turned out for the speech, chanting slogans and carrying signs calling Palin “Sinister Sarah.” If that’s as good as CSU Stanislaus’ lefties can manage, things have gone downhill since my days in the CSU system almost 30 years ago in Fullerton. The mainstream media reporters covering the event couldn’t do much better, as Breitbart TV caught when the live feed continued after the speech and picked up the comments of the press corps:

If these were opinion journalists, these comments would be no problem. If they’re news reporters expected to render an objective, fact-based report on the event, I’d say that they have a bright future at MSNBC.

So much word. The fixation some people have for style over substance does not inspire my confidence in my fellow voters. We have a smooth talker in the White House now and he’s been an epic failure.

NoLeftTurn on June 26, 2010 at 11:28 PM

Big Zero passed Epic Failure at the end of his first year in office.

He’s currently trying his best (and succeeding, sadly) at becoming an Epic Catastrophe.

By 2012, he may very well have become the worst man made disaster to befall this nation.

SuperCool on June 27, 2010 at 12:19 AM

Palin could use a few classically-skilled speechwriters to help raise her positivist civics musings from the pleasant to the inspiring.

She has the heart, she just needs to bring in useful historical themes to galvanize and encourage her listeners.

The mention of the British officer stopping suttee in India is classic.

More such fateful parallels need to be relearned.

Universal moral imagery like that will coax her future audience beyond her accent and help them grasp her strength.

And appreciate Palin’s clear love for our better system,

And our exceptional nation.

And her unapologetic contempt for our sworn enemies and their terroristic Jihad.

No one has manned up as fiercely, not even her former running mate, McGitmo.

Nor anyone else in the race.

(All the Republican R2Me2′s waiting for her to dare shout the first challenges to each new folly or corruption or idiocy of the Obama crew before they risked a position.)

One additional note on attending the Palin rally outside Stanislaus.

I was asked by one reporter (didn’t get his name or affiliation – he had a cameraman) why I was attending the rally and I responded that I was there to support Sarah, and also commented on the ridiculous attacks made by the Palin protesters (including allegations of racism, a boob job, and Trig isn’t her son).

The reporter respond by asking ‘So you haven’t seen her at any Klan rallies?’

I presumed he wanted me to simply respond ‘no I haven’t’ (implying that I attend Klan rallies but never saw Palin at one). Instead I responded ‘I have never been to a Klan rally – that’s a question better asked of Robert Byrd’ (or something very close to that).

I could tell he was a little disappointed in that response. Most of my replies were slams on intolerant liberals and Leland Yee. I doubt that was what they were looking for.

“Every educated person learned Latin” back when liberal arts and the classics constituted a good education.

Now a degree in Sociology/Ethnic Studies/Alternative Cultures/Something Else That Requires a Syllabus to Describe allows college graduates to learn other valuable skills without having to acknowledge the importance of our democratic heritage as developed through centuries of Western civilization.

After all, determining what constitutes a “good” education requires one to make a value judgment for another person–and universities hypocritically say they don’t want to do that for their students.

You just open yourself about politics to any person with a camera? That’s not prudent, especially if you don’t know to whom you’re speaking or giving personal information.

Speaking of, did they ask for your name and age? Most journalists will. Did they give any context for the question you allege to have been asked? A real “journalist” is not looking for one sound byte.

Professional journalists ID themselves and their stations or paper. Did the person have a mic, a mic-flag? Business attire? A business card? Either, you were not dealing with a real journalist or you are very gullible and should apply more scrutiny to people putting mics in your face.

You failed as much as the supposed “journalist” you encountered.

A real “journalist” is not looking for one sound byte.

Let me qualify that. Many so-called “real journalists” have done exactly what you allege to gain that singular sound byte. Frankly, I’m just suspicious of your story. It’s not you, I just get that way when so few facts are offered. Maybe a few more details would change that maybe not. Doesn’t matter, I’m nobody.

People, you have got to be ready to record any interaction you have with media. Otherwise they will always have the upper hand and final word. There are few awkward moments that provide more satisfaction than stifling a journalist with your own FA rights.

I don’t feel I have anything to hide with my political views – so I don’t feel the need to ask somebody who they work for and grab them by the shirt collar until they answer my question. I am also confident enough in my own intelligence and ability to spot a set up that I am not going to get caught in a trap of any sort.

They did ask for my name, and where I was from. I was interviewed or photographed by at least 4 different people who identified themselves as reporters and they all asked my name and where I was from. NONE of them asked my age, so I can judge your ‘most journalists will’ comment to be based on ignorance. This also isn’t the first time a reporter has asked for my name and residence – and I don’t recall ANY of them EVER asking about my age.

The first person I was approached by only had a camera. I did ask her name and affiliation, mostly because there was time and it was an unchaotic scene. I have seen that photo online and my name is listed (along with a passerby supporter, female by initials of BH). I have already described the signs I had and it wouldn’t take long for somebody to Google it, find out my name, Google my name and find out I have been involved in doing research for birthers like Lucas Smith or Butterdizzilion. I’m not ashamed of any of it and am proud my library skills can be put to use.

The 2nd person to approach me (at Rotary International Park on Gettysburg, I believe the address is 1025 Gettysburg) only had a mic. I didn’t bother with asking for his name or credentials because I am 95% certain he was left leaning and small time. He was interviewing a Palin protestor when I started chanting ‘Run Sarah Run’ – which I’m sure his mic picked up. After he finished that interview he approached me.

The 3rd person I interviewed with was a clean cut, white shirt and slacks type of reporter (dark hair, about 6 foot, typical newsguy and he had a cameraman with him) that I presumed to be fairly moderate. I didn’t ask his name or affiliation either, and our exchange was short and not all that exciting in my opinion.

The final person to approach me for an interview I would have presumed to be a liberal. He was not your typical ‘clean cut newsguy’ ready to appear on camera. I didn’t ask his name either. He approached me, asked some questions including the ‘Klan rally’ question – and after I finished I was being complimented by other Palin supporters for my comments and that sort of led me away from asking that particular reporter who he was or who he was with.

The only reason I would ask somebody who they were and who they were with is so I could satisfy my own curiosity to see if the responses were aired or posted. I suppose that is vanity on my part. You can now trash me for that if you wish.

To you that may sound like I am gullible for giving out personal info – but to me you sound a little paranoid – and since you claim that any real journalist would ask my age when none ever has I can only judge you to be ignorant. See how that works?

Back when Sarah gave her Redding speech I was also interviewed by a journalist. No camera – just a pad and paper. I did ask him his name and who he worked for (I believe it was Geoff Johnson, with some local paper near Redding – but I have thrown the business card away since). My comments to Geoff never appeared that I am aware of.

What now – do you want me to provide a receipt that I actually had lunch at AJ’s Cafe and Grill on Geer? Generally you have some interesting comments here, but your accusation that I ‘allegedly’ was asked this particular question is a little silly and somewhat childish.

I really don’t care what people think about my political views and I will shout them every opportunity I get. They aren’t extreme (even my work for Lucas was simply library research – I make no claims about his document since I am not an expert. Same for my work for Butter. I do requested research if I feel it is a worthy endeavor. I don’t ask for reimbursement – I just do it).

I believe you have failed even worse than the guy asking the ‘Klan’ question. Perhaps you aren’t confident enough in your own self, your views, or intelligence that you can speak freely to others but that is your demon to deal with.

Hide it under a bushel? NO! I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

Remember our enemies spend hours in dumpsters and are excellent at reassembling such documents to gain intelligence.

So thanks for trying to be a “friend.” That was a valiant-effort, truly.

But in Palin land we are just supposed to know “what she really meant”….

Bradky on June 27, 2010 at 5:06 PM

I stick to reading her policy statements, and I must say that I agree with 90%.

That’s all that matters to me, anyway.

AnninCA on June 27, 2010 at 5:10 PM

In my world I look up to people who are not so shallow that they actually say that Reagan went to college at Eureka college in California when it was actually in Illinois.
Or getting Neda Agha-Soltan’s name wrong (said Najia) as well as the facts surrounding her death.

But in Palin land we are just supposed to know “what she really meant”….

Bradky on June 27, 2010 at 5:06 PM

So let me see if I’m getting this right. Palin misspeaks a couple of times and as a result you dismiss her even though her policy positions are spot on? Or more likely, you can’t stand her and use meaningless things like misspeaking now and then as a reason to dis her publicly. Even though all public speakers misspeak occasionally.

Uh…okay.

I’m not sure if you’ve caught on but in this little scenario, you actually come across as the shallow one, sport.

Bradky on June 27, 2010 at 5:06 PM

Uh, no. Those would actually be called “mistakes” or “misspeaking”. “Shallow” is referring someone to an article in the New York Review for “objective” commentary on Palin. “Shallow” is also claiming to be a conservative while supporting a Scozzafava for Congress. Hold that against Newt, do ya?

ddrintn on June 27, 2010 at 6:46 PM

Come to think of it, Bradky, the “We Need a Jeopardy Contestant” school might be the shallowest of all. You go on about Palin cultists and Palinistas, while apparently being some sort of “Presidentolater” who is somehow under the impression that a President MUST always be some sort of almost supernaturally wise and knowledgeable demigod who never makes a mistake, has had just the right education and always but ALWAYS speaks using the most refined turns of speech. We’ve had enough of so-called demigods.

You are cute when you try to puff out your chest in her defense. But you do illustrate my point nicely about how her devotees will claim even her mistakes are not really mistakes.
If you gave the same consideration to just about any other politician who gets something wrong you would have a point. You haven’t and you don’t.
Besides, one would think that for 75K and bendy straws the speaker could at least do their homework.
Remember, the Palinistas wrote Jindal off as a contender because of his lackluster performance in the SOTU rebuttal. Didn’t notice you defending him at that time.

I’m not sure if you’ve caught on but in this little scenario, you actually come across as the shallow one, sport.

You don’t have to be a “devotee” to know that Sarah knows very well that President Reagan went to Eureka College in Illinois…as for Neda’s name, who can deal with those Iranian names?
A misspeak isn’t a mistake.

If you gave the same consideration to just about any other politician who gets something wrong you would have a point. You haven’t and you don’t.

So how does Obama account for: “57 states”, “profit and loss” ratio of stock, “corpseman,” “Twitters,”speaking “Austrian” in Austria, etc, etc.

Remember, the Palinistas wrote Jindal off as a contender because of his lackluster performance in the SOTU rebuttal. Didn’t notice you defending him at that time.

I defended him and I’m a “Palinista” who’s never written Jindal off.
Nice stereotyping job, once again.

It’s a phrase made more infamous than famous during the O.J. trial and is known throughout the nation and the culture as being a cheap shot at calling one’s opponent a “racist” simply because the accuser is white and the accused is black.
The accused should never be excused just because they get a free pass by using the race card: such was the case with O.J. and such is the case with you.

The liberals in conservative drag like TRC who bash Palin for her voice or accent sure weren’t adding anything of significance to the thread.

But – now that the discussion is once again seriously derailed from the topic of the thread who’s up for making TRC give yet another teary eyed defense of Rev Jesse’s ‘hymietown’ comment?

Mr Purple on June 28, 2010 at 3:36 AM

Anybody catch Sarah’s speech at the Oil Palace? She had some great comments in there – but obviously nobody cares about the topic or what she said – it was how she said it that anybody cares about.

Nothing short ot beautiful music to the ears, it was. Like a choir of angels singing Churchill’s ‘we will fight them on the beaches’ speech meets songbirds merrily chirping on a dew laden spring morning. Sarahcuda Soup for the Soul with a touch of Mozart.

I think she slammed Zero a few times too, but who cares about that. The easy listening sweet sounds of SarahAmerica were all that mattered.

No surprise the Fox team thought it was horrid.

Thin on substance, weak on accuracy, but heavy on “choir of angels” effect…. almost like going to a Benny Hinn event.

Then he turned out to be a heckuva horse who I made quite a bit of money on. He won the Santa Anita Handicap at 15-1 odds. That was a very good day for me. :-)
