Jon Kyl: Er, Obama didn’t exactly say that he won’t secure the border unless we pass amnesty

posted at 5:39 pm on June 25, 2010 by Allahpundit

Terrific. If people are taking what he said “out of context,” how come Kyl didn’t mention that when he challenged the White House for denying what Obama told him?

Kyl adds that President Obama is still “not doing enough” to secure the borders. Kyl, of course, had a small spat with the White House last week over comments he made at a town-hall meeting. Kyl, responding to a voter’s question, detailed a recent one-on-one conversation he had with the president. “They are holding [border security] hostage” over hopes for comprehensive immigration reform, Kyl said at the forum.

Kyl tells us that the comments were “taken a bit out of context,” and that the “they” he was referring to was the Left, “the president’s base,” and not the administration. “I did not try to start a fight. This meeting happened a month ago and we were talking in the context of his political problems. He was talking about how they think that if we secure the border, you guys [Republicans] won’t have the incentive to work on comprehensive immigration reform.”

I went back and re-watched the clip (skip ahead to 3:20 or so) and, yeah, it’s a bit more ambiguous on second view — but only a bit. The thrust of his point, that Obama’s extremely reluctant to enforce the border until he can appease Latinos and the left with an amnesty deal, stands as is. The difference is that Kyl’s now casting him as a sort of prisoner of his base, as if The One really wants to crack down on illegal immigration but just can’t get those darned progressives far enough off his back to do so. Whether that’s an honest description of how Obama feels (giggle) or merely Kyl trying to heal a rift with the White House after the fact by offering a little spin on The One’s behalf, I leave for you to judge.

In other Kyl news, America’s dumbest Democratic county supervisor got a letter this morning from the senator gently correcting her on a point of geography. The boss emeritus published it earlier — but inexplicably left out the map that Kyl attached. No joke: According to his office, they actually sent this to Peggy West. Comedy gold.

His office CONFIRMED his statement when asked just that and McCain backed him up.

If he’s going to back off his statement now that he’s had his 5 minutes of fame he needs to go.

We’re getting a little too loose with the calls for resignation.

He should have set the record straight earlier, but on a scale of 1 to 10 of bad things members of Congress have done this week, we’re talking .2 at most.

I’m going with Kyl on this one, BTW.
I just can’t get a visual of Maobama doing something butch, definitive and “right wing” like closing the border with Mexico.
Not. going. to. happen.

Very possible, if not probable.

No, he said “Obama SAID” and when the White House denied Obama said that, Kyl DEFENDED that that’s what was told to him and McCain backed him up.

He accused the President of lying and now comes around sheepishly and says “Oh hey, y’know… YOU took it out of context”

Uh huh… no.

Kyl needs to resign. This is a FAR GREATER insult than standing up for the rights of BP to not be shaken down by a gestapo executive office and there are TONS of Republicans that want Barton’s head.

I’m definitely with Kyl on this one. Regardless if he wasn’t as precise as he should have been, I think it isn’t much of a debate that Obama and the liberal democrats would never unilaterally proceed with strict enforcement without getting something on the amnesty side. It’s the only reason they are even pretending to entertain securing the border. For the immediate future, at least, we need Kyl in the Senate.

Maybe im a nut but i cant help but think that Obama’s goon squad make a visit to these people and make it known what will happen to them and which of their skeletons will be released to the press if they dont back down or back off.

Its just too uncanny that it ends up being the other person that is wrong and not Obama….almost every time. Chicago thug politics is rampant, we know that, i just think that its way worse than any of us little people could ever imagine.

The people surrounding Obama are mentally ill and unstable with goals only the insane or evil would pursue….they believe the ends justifies the means and history has shown that far left ideologues have no line they will not cross to save their power.

Let’s not say stupid, but it’s complicated. I was very much against the sales tax raise and voted against it. I was not happy with Jan Brewer because of that. But frankly, this new immigration law has (temporarily) trumped that issue. Because it’s that important to get things under control around here. Right now, Jan Brewer and Jon Kyl are helpful to that effort. McCain less so. But these are the tools we have. When Kyl is up for reelection, I’ll evaluate the alternatives if there are any.

Kyl said Obama told him the border couldn’t be secured w/o amnesty first. It turns out Obama was weaseling by implying that his hands were tied and it was his base that was pushing this position. So what’s the difference? Obama made it clear to Kyl that the border ain’t getting secured w/o amnesty first.

The idea that you try to take umbrage with me because I downdressed Jenfidel tells me what I need to know about you. You had a chance to speak up against bigotry and you DEFEND it.

I commend you for embracing your tolerance for ethnic-bigotry. At least you own up to it.

In unrelated news, shortly after this walk-back Kyl’s wife and kids mysteriously reappeared in his home, unharmed.

DrAllecon

I though the same thing. Maybe Kyl felt a boot on his neck.

Jenfidel, I know you’re unashamed. I bet you’re even proud of yourself. Either you’re a bona fide bigot or you’re one hell of an actress.

The Race Card on June 25, 2010 at 7:20 PM

Are they illegals or not, TRC?
Illegals who crossed the Rio Grande to get here have been known to call themselves this, but it’s only in the last few decades that it became un-PC (which is your whole life, BTW) to use the term.
Besides, it looks almost like Pock-ee-stan.
If you look at it like that, it’s meaningless.
Lighten up.
Not everything’s about race.
Sometime it’s about breaking the laws of the land.

Oh nooo! Kyl lied to the tea party nutjobs!

HE MUST BE IMPEACHED RIGHT NOW!1!!1! START A RECALL!1!1 GIVE HIM A PINK SLIP!!1!1 TEA!11!!!!!11!

Hey, all you far right nuts. Wipe the egg off your face, then come back to the big kids table (but leave Glenn Beck there..)

I’ve said this time and time again, if you fools would take the emotion out of everything, you might be beneficial to the argument. Instead, you overreact to everything. It’s like the boy who cried wolf. Just *breathe*

But yes, silly of Kyl and his office to not state this earlier. Although it’s just typical politics. Obama is right. Why would liberal support securing the border if they know it’s the only way they’ll get amnesty? I was amazed at how many of you folks were actually surprised that democrats play politics.

Kyl did explain the misunderstanding on the same day.

Update your post & apologize, please. A great senator is being bashed for no good reason.

itsnotaboutme on June 25, 2010 at 8:45 PM

How interesting: It is going to take a lot of guts to fix the mess that Obama has made of America. Most of us are looking for honest, highly accountable, and principled candidates to turn this insanity around. It is very sad to be accused of being stupid and tea party nutjobs for taking each elected official seriously. I do not know if we have been too lazy or too uninformed, but I think our country is in serious trouble.

I don’t condone illegal immigration or hiring illegal immigrants. That doesn’t automatically compel me to use ethnic-slurs.

Geography does not justify your ethnic-slur. Nice try bigotette. Nice to see you have so much support.

Threads dying, you’re lucky you didn’t get banned. I’m glad you’re still around so I have a perfectly-good bigot to reference.

Just for laughs, what law school was that?

Excuse me, but nearly every Republican has consistently stood up to Obama for the past 18 months. Including McCain (who you went on to trash), who has been a leader the opposition.

itsnotaboutme on June 25, 2010 at 6:41 PM

Kyl spoke out, quite vocally, against the healthcare bill. I was watching the meeting that Obama (finally) had with the Republicans on the issue, and Kyl comported himself extremely well. There were several threada here on HotAir dealing with his VERY VOCAL opposition to Obama. He has been a leader in the Senate. McCain…not so much. He has been one of the best senators in the senate. That’s my opinion, and I can back it up with some more facts. I can also back up my opinion that McCain is a RINO.

I disagreed with Kyl on the amnesty crap that he fell into line with Bush on. I sent him several faxes, and he RESPONDED TO ME, ADDRESSING MY CONCERNS. I sent the same faxes to John McCain, and HE NEVER RESPONDED TO ME. John McCain has taken a tack way to the right since he’s running for re-election. I have several reasons to “trash” him.

I love ya, Andy.

Re: Kyl: Obama Did Not Consult on Border Funds [Andy McCarthy]

My friend Steve Schippert points out that the $600 million President Obama has finally provided for the defense of Americans at the southern border is considerably less than the $900 million Obama redistribu — er, I mean, provided to Gaza in one of the early acts of his presidency. Gaza is (and was then) controlled by Hamas, which has been formally designated a terrorist organization under U.S. law for about 15 years. That is, if you tried to give money to Hamas, or tried to give money to someone else under circumstances where you knew it would end up benefitting Hamas, you would be committing a crime (material support to terrorism) for which you could be sent to prison for 15 years. Yet, the Obama administration gives 50 percent more money to Hamas than it forks up for border security . . . even as it prepares to sue Arizona for enforcing immigration laws the feds won’t enforce. Change you can believe in.

Out of curiosity, if there are still any Arizonans on the thread, has the sales tax increased in your state in order to meet the demands on social services and so forth caused by the influx of illegals?

onlineanalyst on June 25, 2010 at 9:32 PM

I don’t think this is any big deal of an admission. Of course, the comment wasn’t literal.

Just because you have an ‘R’ after your name does not get you a pass from public scrutiny. The rules, as beautifully articulated by Col Cooper, are straightforward:
1. Ride.
2. Shoot straight.
3. Tell the truth.

It was touted to fund education: “It’s for the children!” Jan Brewer was it’s biggest cheerleader. Its opponents claimed that there were several cost-cutting measures proposed, but they were ignored. I have no doubt that’s the case. Seems that even conservative Republicans have no problem with government spending money they don’t have, as long as it benefits THEM. They are STILL going to cut funding for our state education programs, but by LESS than they would have…and that’s assuming that this tax really generates the revenue it was projected to generate.

Of course he LIED What do you call it when you accuse somebody of making statements they didn’t make, letting OTHER people continue to make those statements **on your behalf** and then come out later and say “oh hey… you misunderstood what I said”?

He got NOTHING politically for doing this, he impugned the credibility of himself and McCain and he’s given further canon fodder to the Democrats Media Machine to FACTUALLY back up their assertions that the Republican do nothing but lie, mislead and attack Democrats all day.

To be honest, it’s difficult to say with certainty. There is a cost that we bear because of illegal immigration. But I am not convinced that our budget troubles are solely due to that. I still think there is plenty of unnecessary state spending that should be cut before we are asked to increase our taxes. The great Graham Mountain Red Squirrel Rope Bridge caper is exhibit number one.
