Video: Obama takes Russian president to burger joint for lunch

posted at 6:07 pm on June 24, 2010 by Allahpundit

I like it. I don’t know if I like it quite as much as cruising around a ranch together in a pick-up truck, but since nothing much came of that relationship, perhaps burger diplomacy will be more successful. Why, they even shared a plate of fries. Aw. Said Medvedev afterward, “Probably it is not quite healthy but it is very tasty and you can feel the spirit of America.” Indeed.

This was a prelude to the afternoon joint presser, at which The One — the world’s most famous Blackberry owner, who’s praised incessantly by the press for his new-media savvy — noted that Medvedev had recently swung by the headquarters of … “Twitters.” Dude?

Yeah, I called them on the road while I was in Sarasota at a McDonald’s drive through. I asked for the fat and salt content of my Super Sized Angus Beef Club Sammich and they asked me to pull to the window. So, I did. Then the guy looked me right in the eye and said, “That’ll be $6.94″. So I paid him with a $10 and drove off into the sunset.

I feel like such a militant.

Having spent 3 weeks in the former Soviet Union, I can tell you that the Russian people were happy to get anything to eat and that qualified as “healthy” to them.
I doubt things have changed there all that much for this pampered KGB prince because the elite always got the best food.

Political Punch

In the East Room of the White House earlier today, President Obama praised Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s “vision for modernization in Russia, especially high-tech innovation as a personal passion of the president,” noting that during the Russian leader’s visit to Silicon Valley this week, “he visited the headquarter of Twitters (sic), where he opened his own account.”

Both leaders ordered cheeseburgers – Mr. Obama’s with onions, lettuce, tomato and ‘bread and butter’ pickles along with an iced tea. Medvedev’s burger: onions, jalapenos and mushroom

Jalapenos? Seriously? I wouldn’t have expected that as a normal part of the Russian diet…

And, heh, I guess Obama doesn’t like kosher dills.

if you’re driving and near I-10 in Leon Springs, TX (north of SAT) there is an awesome BBQ joint there (http://www.rudys.com/) it is so good that we named the dog “Rudy” after that place. Horse troughs of longnecks, order BBQ by the pound, awesome sauce. There’s also a texmex place next door called Nachomama’s. have fun.

Had to go look it up…Seems there’s a few McDonald’s in Moscow now…but they’re pricier than other places.

Heh, when I was living down in Wash, DC a few years ago, the Safeway supermarket on 17th (I think) St NW had the nickname “Soviet Safeway”, because it was so small, had little variety, and the checkout lines went halfway down each aisle. It would take half an hour to go through.

I do wish I was around to have been able to visit the old Soviet Union tho. Must have been something.

Urquell on tap and original Budveis with wurst. If “Dah, Bears” fans knew that experience they’d be chartering planes by the dozens to visit there.

The food I had in Soviet Russia was pretty good (at known to be good locations) except for some of their weird breakfast creations. Though hardly comparable in finesse compared to, say, the Troikka in Helsinki. Another scary thing in Leningrad is the tap water. Straight out of the Neva River. One of those let’s not bathe and stay cleaner type of instant decisions. Even the bottled water had a scary sheen to it which convinces one to opt for vodka instead because at least it’s distilled. Mostly.
