Surprise: CNN links yachting and golf

posted at 2:20 pm on June 23, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

After beating up on Tony Hayward’s decision to spend a day yachting this weekend, the national media oddly avoided mentioning President Obama’s golfing day, taking place on the same afternoon. It was Barack Obama’s seventh day on the links since the explosion at Deepwater Horizon and the start of the Gulf spill, which has mainly gone without comment during the massive media coverage. CNN follows the lead of David Letterman, who skewered the outrage over Hayward’s sailing day by noting that Obama got so mad when he heard about that it that “he missed his putt!” Jeanne Moos wraps up this piece by speaking to someone with more political sense than anyone at the White House (via Greg Hengler):

So, CNN mentions it, once, during siesta time middle of day.

Then, forever, they can say “we reported on it”.

Sure, but PBHO uses his golf time to ponder, strategerize, create solutions; all Dubya did was try to think of new ways to kill people.

Of course they don’t take Jeannie’s story that seriously..more of lighthearted fun…. But when Bush was golfing, we had troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, not like now… What? They are still there?

Well, almost. Looks like the time stamp was early this morning. But they gave it to Jeanne Moost, queen of “quirk”, so they don’t take any of this seriously. Chuckle, chuckle, oh that Obama.

somewhatconcerned on June 23, 2010 at 2:34 PM

5-6 hours every time he plays golf, then there is the hour at the 19th hole, back to the White House for a shower, etc., etc.

So every time Obama goes golfing it is an easy 8 hours gone. A work day.
39 times golfing = a month & 10 days of lost work days. He has been in office 17 months now and 1/14th of it has been on the golf course?

One day he had a tough shot on the 9th hole; so he took some time off to play putt putt to clear his head while he made a decision on how to play the shot.

The jokes from Letterman are what the White House needs to take seriously. There has been a veritable barrage from him in the last week. Late-night TV is always the best barometer of what the country is really thinking, and Letterman has a much more liberal, pro-Obama audience than Leno. So if even he is cracking wise about Obama’s golfing and the general incompetence of his Administration, you know the general population is outraged.

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on June 23, 2010 at 3:00 PM

It’s ok to do a story of Mr. President playing golf in the same context as the BP CEO going yachting as long as you make it in the form of a joke with a “haha” Letterman clip and a couple interviews from the average Joe on the street who thinks it’s perfectly fine for the president to play more golf than any president ever while supposedly dealing with a crisis of epic proportions. Then the viewers can see it all as kind of humorous and not connect the two. Yachting bad, golfing funny. And I’m no golf expert but from the looks of that clip it appears Mr. President pretty much sucks at golf.

scalleywag on June 23, 2010 at 3:04 PM

For a guy that averages two rounds of golf per month over the past 18 months, that’s one poor golf swing. And did you see how short he left that putt?

dirtseller on June 23, 2010 at 3:05 PM

Notice how she merely mentioned outrage over Bush’s golfing and didn’t point out the differences in time spent on the sport by the two.

Bambi on June 23, 2010 at 3:29 PM

the “what do they want him to do? Put a wetsuit on and go down there?” people are perhaps the dumbest people in this debate. The exact same excuse could be just as accurately used for Tony Hayward.

Almost as dumb as the people who say “oh so now you want big government?! I thought you teabaggers hated the federal government!!”

I understand that every once in a while things can get to be a little too much and people need to find an outlet to blow off some steam or go to some exotic island or whatever. Mr. President, however, has abused his R&R privileges on a scale like no other. How many of us would still have a job if instead of handling the tasks at hand we were consistently out “na na na nahing” with McCartney or zipping up to Buffalo for some wings (on the taxpayer dollar) or tearing up turf on the greens? I think what McChrystal did was far less harmful to the administration’s reputation than Mr. President’s blaze attitude towards crises.

scalleywag on June 23, 2010 at 3:37 PM

Not to defend Tony Hayward but… with Hayward it was a bad PR decision. With Obama it is a pattern of bad PR decisions.

I don’t think anyone would really care about the game of golf Sunday if it wasn’t for all the other rounds since the spill, the parties, the fundraisers, the basket ball interviews, vacations, concerts………..

barnone on June 23, 2010 at 3:43 PM

Bush did 24 rounds of golf in 8 yrs. Obama has done 39 (so far) in a year and a half. 7 rounds since the oil spill. Folks tell CNN that Hayward doesn’t get a day off, fix the spill. Folks give Obama a pass cuz he can’t done a wetsuit to help out. WELL… Neither CAN Hayward! Plus, BP can’t do anything when OBAMA’S CZARS keep talking & debating & studying the crisis rather than GETTING INTO ACTION and STOPPING FL, MS, AL, & LA Governors from clean the damn thing up themselves!!! Yes, Pres. Obama has more POWER to resolve this than Hayward!

dirtseller on June 23, 2010 at 3:05 PM

He has trouble staying down on the ball. He dips on the backswing and raises up at impact. I bet he hits a lot of thin shots.

As for his putting, I believe the acceptable taunt is, “Oh, Michelle, does your husband play golf too.” Except, with those exquisitely chiseled arms, Michelle would probably knock the ball off the back of the green.
