Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on June 23, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

How does a deficit hawk make the case for fiscal responsibility? As Barack Obama demonstrated this weekend, much in the same manner as global-warming alarmists make the case for energy conservation — by spending big money on travel. Obama paid Ohio a short visit, Andrew Malcolm reports, to extol the virtues of his program, and it cost us over $500 bucks a word:

Obviously, as part of his administration’s plan to reduce spending to address the ginormous deficit, President Obama flew on Air Force One the other day from Washington all the way out to Columbus, Ohio, and back. About a four-hour round-trip flight.

He was on the ground in the Buckeye State for a total of 70 minutes. By another count, he was on Ohio soil barely 58 minutes, touting more what he sees as an economic recovery. (Obama had tickets to an evening White Sox baseball game back in Washington.) …

With the cost of Air Force One put at around $100,000 per hour, plus the other planes carrying Secret Service, vehicles, Marine One etc., CBS’ amazing Mark Knoller estimates that the trip cost American taxpayers between $500,000 and $1 million.

That’s as much as $100,000 per minute of speaking time.

In his brief appearance, the president uttered 1,990 words at the microphone (he had tickets for a Washington Nationals baseball game to make that night).

That works out to $502 per word and $32,258 per paragraph.

So what did he have to say?  Obama bragged about saving and creating jobs through Porkulus, which carried its own special sense of irony:

Of those, say, 70 minutes in Ohio, a grand total of 10 were spent speaking in the middle of a closed street, a presidential photo opportunity designed to highlight construction jobs allegedly created by the $787- billion stimulus spending bill he signed in early 2009. Workers on the next-door construction site were unhappy because they were told to stay away from work for the president’s visit — and get an involuntary unpaid day off because of the president’s 600-second appearance.

Hey, it could have been worse.  Obama could have spoken for 1200 seconds.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at [email protected] with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Obama’s administration has reached new heights at two things: talking and spending money.

Obama paid Ohio a short visit, Andrew Malcolm reports, to extol the virtues of his program, and it cost us over $500 bucks a word:

this is a liberal dream. Extort others’ money to allow you to do what you think you do best.

we should be thanking him.

ted c on June 23, 2010 at 8:11 AM

Also of note, the employees at the construction site were not permitted to work that day due to his visit, so that was an unpaid days leave for them. He comes to speak about creating employment and effectively destroys it for the day. Heckova job, Barry.

JohnO on June 23, 2010 at 8:13 AM

He was so tired from the trip and ball game he had to refresh himself on the golf course the next day when it was in the humid mid 90s but afterall it was father’s day weekend.

During his Ohio pep talk he made a crass illusion to Bite Me’s BFD remark. It went over like a lead balloon.

No Niks on June 23, 2010 at 8:13 AM

If he couldn’t use taxpayer money for his follies, imagine how fast he would blow through that $5.5 mil. he made last year.

Cody1991 on June 23, 2010 at 8:15 AM

“plug the d*mn hole” – $2008
“Find someone’s ass to kick” – $2510
“You will get to keep your doctor” – $3012
“I will not raise your taxes” – priceless

Plug the O.

Josiah on June 23, 2010 at 8:19 AM

This is such bullshit. We’ve got Biden showing up here to brag about a project that was in the works years before Obama was in office, calling it a “stimulus project” because they threw a few bucks at it at the last minute. The major funding came from a local corporation and it would have been built with or without stimulus money.

Dee2008 on June 23, 2010 at 8:20 AM

Great, we get to pay for yet another tired, repetitive campaign speech.

Talk about a lousy investment, this guy won’t even be on the ballot in 2012. He’s finished. Even the Democrats know it.

NoDonkey on June 23, 2010 at 8:21 AM

OT: Ed, did you know there’s a Captain’s Quarters blog out there again? I realize it’s not you, but the guy is a bit…um…unhinged. Posted a screed about how the spill on the Gulf is going to um…destroy Florida and everything for 200 miles inland. Wow.

OT/ Kevin Rudd will resign as Australian PM tonight. Aus dollar is spiking up.

Imagine what our markets would look like if the Zero would follow suit!

Cody1991 on June 23, 2010 at 8:22 AM

Trouble is, obama can do just as much damage away from D.C. as he can when he’s there. At least when Congress is away they can’t ruin things more than they have.

Mojave Mark on June 23, 2010 at 8:27 AM

Not merely incompetent, but evil.

rbj on June 23, 2010 at 8:28 AM

Has anyone seriously attempted to measure the cost of disruption caused by presidential PR for longer than just a day? My guess is that such a study would support the conclusion that a vast majority of “official” presidential travel is an enormous waste of money and is used for partisan political purposes.

To bad his teleprompters don’t have a running tally of just how much he is costing this country in his high rolling, jet setting, and frivolous devotion to himself.

Agree – the stock market began tanking and unemployment began rising, just as soon as it became apparent that we would have a Democrat President and Democrat control of Congress.

The biggest stimulus package will be throwing Democrats out by the bushel, this fall.

Obama’s resignation seems to be a bridge to far, but we can “hope” for “change”.

It came across the financial wires. Now there’s a report saying that he thinks he can win if it’s put up for a vote. So, it’s unclear what’s happening. He’s supposed to give a presser this evening.

It’s heartbreaking to see what’s going on. I read over the weekend that corporations have over $1.5 trillion sitting in cash that they aren’t using for hiring, expansion, etc. It’s because they are unclear as to their liabilities, i.e. tax increases, health care, etc.

Cody1991 on June 23, 2010 at 8:43 AM

Any bets on what the great and powerful O will do with McChrystal?I really wish he would resign. That goes for McChrystal too.

sandee on June 23, 2010 at 8:46 AM

Instead of wasting taxpayers money by flying the friendly skies, perhaps B.O. should consider travelling the country in that buws of his. You know, the one he is always throwing people under.

Cody1991 on June 23, 2010 at 8:43 AM

Exactly, who is going to hire with the incompetent lunatics in charge of things?

This is the most anti-business “administration” in American history.

Because of that, this is the weakest, slowest recovery in American history.

Democrats offer handouts and gimmicks like affirmative action and minority set asides, because they can’t get the hell out of the way of the private sector.

You want a handout? Vote Democrat.

You want a job? Vote Republican.

That should be the message this fall.

NoDonkey on June 23, 2010 at 8:47 AM

This guy has never held back one iota, using the power of the Presidency to do whatever he wants whenever he wants, regardless of cost or ‘optics’.

sheesh.

The company I work for has estimated that the changes to HC could cost them anywhere from 1/2 to 1 billion dollars. The letter also stated that they would expense less by paying the penalties for not providing any coverage for their employees.

Thank you Harry, Nancy, and Barack! I’ll remember how generous you have been with MY MONEY come November.

I know I’m just whipping the bleached bones of a long dead horse, but until the fluffers in the MSM start calling Jug-ears out for what he really is and what he’s really doing, only the few of us (relatively) who read sites like this will know it. Personally, I’m counting on the unspinnable collapse of our economy to move the electorate over the next couple of cycles. It’s still the economy, stupid.

When you are done counting the cost to US Taxpayers, let’s add up the cost to all the workers who were put on leave without pay for the day so Obama could extol on the number of jobs he’s created!

Tell me any US worker who could keep his job if he made 4 to 5 mistakes (Obamateurisms) per week.

He forgot to shoot a goose, like John Kerry. Or is his goose cooked already?

In order to absorb all that carbon dioxide emitted by Air Force One, Secretary Solis has promised that 500 trees will be planted by undocumented Mexicans in Ohio, who will be guaranteed minimum wage. Your tax dollars at work.

Steve Z on June 23, 2010 at 2:59 PM

He goes to Ohio all the time because the Tea Party that he demagogues and minimizes all the time is stronger there than anywhere in the country.

People in Southern Ohio especially will work very hard to defeat him and all Dims in future elections.
