Unreal: Mexico joins lawsuits against Arizona over new immigration law
posted at 7:47 pm on June 22, 2010 by Allahpundit
Where are we nationally in the polls in terms of support for Arizona’s law? Around 60 percent or so, yes?
Send this to an immigration fencesitter you know and love and let’s see if we can’t get it up to 70.
In a legal brief supporting one of the lawsuits, Mexico argued that the measure is unconstitutional and “raises substantial challenges to the bilateral diplomatic relations between Mexico and the U.S.”
More than 20 million Mexican workers, tourists and students were lawfully allowed into the United States throughout 2009, said the brief, and the government is worried Mexicans will be discriminated against because of racial profiling.
“Mexico is gravely concerned that (Arizona’s law) will lead to … detentions of Mexican citizens without regard to whether they have taken any actions or exhibited any behavior indicating they are guilty of a crime,” the brief said.
Elsewhere, they complain that the law empowers cops to stereotype based on, er, “foreign-ness” even though racial profiling is expressly prohibited. As for the boldfaced part, we’ve been over it a good two dozen times before but let’s go over it again: Per the statute, a cop first needs reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed before he can ask about immigration status. He can’t try to corral a Mexican-American family at Baskin-Robbins because they look “suspicious.” If you’re busted for something else, only then is legal status on the table.
Two other points. First, am I mistaken or don’t you need to bring some sort of identifying document with you to enter the U.S. from Mexico even for a day trip? From DHS’s page on border crossings:
Mexican Citizens – Mexican citizens including children must present a passport with a nonimmigrant visa or a laser visa border crossing card.
* Document requirements for most Mexican citizens, including children entering the United States, do not change under WHTI. See www.getyouhome.gov for more information.
* US-VISIT biometric procedures may apply to some Mexican citizens. Find out if US-VISIT applies to you.
Permanent residents are also required to carry their green card on them at all times — not according to Arizona law, but according to federal law. Why do I bring all this up? Because, as you may remember, the Arizona statute creates a presumption that someone is here legally if they produce any sort of federally-issued identification — like, say, a visa. Show the cop your ID and you can be on your way, in which case, why the Mexican government’s hand-wringing for its citizens who are here legally? Given the document requirements to cross the border, they’re more likely to have identification on them than a U.S. citizen is.
Second point: Amnesty shills love to scold conservatives for their poor PR skills, lamenting the “incendiary rhetoric” that poisons our national debate on this issue. How come we never hear, though, about the poisonous PR efforts of the Mexican government, which I’ll bet has created more amnesty opponents over the years than Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity combined? It’s astounding to me how cavalier they are about meddling in American attempts to solve a problem that’s a direct result of their own terrible governance, replete with tut-tutting about discrimination by Calderon when he visits the White House. Every time they make a move I get a little firmer in opposing amnesty, and I can’t be the only one — and the truly insane part is that they didn’t need to intervene this time at all. There are plenty of suits already pending against the statute; the DOJ itself will reportedly file suit next week. Jumping in here may play well at home but it only further alienates Americans, which makes their goal of amnesty that much less likely. Are they really this stupid?

The first order of business for the new Congress in 2011 had better be articles of impeachment.

By that standard, he should have been impeached the moment he took the oath.

If I were charitable I would guess that Mexico is fatalistic about the US and prideful about its nationals and doesn’t care what Americans think.
If I were uncharitable I would guess that Mexico is investing in the future loyalty (certainly cultural, probably financial, maybe political) of a sizable portion of the population north of the border and doesn’t care what Americans think.
So no, I don’t think they’re stupid. They’re acting consistent with their brand of patriotism.

I suggest two rounds of golf a day, preceded by a leisurely brunch, lunch in the middle and a nice dinner after, followed by dancing to any rock group he chooses. That should keep him occupied most of the day so he won’t have time to screw up anything else. Personally, I have no problem with him playing golf. I wish he would play all the time. There are courses with lights. Day golf, night golf, golf around the clock, please.

Hell would be the correct term as we are locked in a battle of good vs. evil.
I agree that it would be a tall order to impeach given the calculus of the Congress.
However, that does not by any stretch of the imagination diminish the grave harm that this president is causing to the Republic. I am dead certain that he intends to destroy it.
So I’ll hang my hat upon the dim hope that sufficient elected officials come to their senses and remove this beast from office.
Because leafing though the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights for another remedy is going to result in something really, really ugly.

Maybe Arizona should sue Mexico for interfering in their political affairs, just as it’s illegal to interfere in Mexican politics. Also, maybe they need to start charging ‘tariffs’ on foreign workers, making it not worth it to hire people from any other country; that way, the stupid Mexicans can’t claim their being singled out on the basis of their ethnicity (something they constantly throw in peoples’ faces). The Mexican president should also be sued, personally, and even have criminal charges levied against him by the State of Arizona for his part in his state’s aiding and abetting criminals (border crossers), including court exhibits like the manual the Mexicans publish that’s a how-to for illegally entering the United States. If the people that shot the deputy recently are found to be Mexicans, then criminal charges should be filed against the Mexican president for conspiracy to commit the murder of a police officer, and for being accessories before the fact (in providing material assistance in getting the felon across the border, thanks to their booklet). There’s a lot of things Arizona should do, and they should also be throwing a lot of legal paperwork at Obama and the DHS, for their failure to protect the citizens of Arizona, hence violating their Constitutional Right to protection from foreign invaders.
Virus-X on June 22, 2010 at 9:50 PM

The other animals seem to retain more of their rights than the Americans. No law tries to forbid wild, predatory animals to hunt Americans, or Mexicans, for that matter. A wild animal of the desert is free to bring down any game it can catch and make off with, even an American, even an immigrant, and even an illegal immigrant, whom the Americans must treat as sacred. The laws forbid nothing to the wild animals, not so much I think because men know the wild animals cannot understand the laws as because men know the wild animals will not obey them. The Americans’ rulers give the Americans many laws, however, because they know the Americans are tame and will obey.
