White House spokesman: It does us all good when Obama plays golf or something

posted at 5:33 pm on June 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite, a longstanding mystery solved: Yes, things can get worse without Gibbs at the press briefings. There were three possible ways to answer this question. One: Burton could have taken the Jon Chait line and asked people to lay off Tony Hayward already. Hayward, after all, had a pretty busy few days last week too, no? But Burton can’t do that because Rahm Emanuel already demagogued Hayward for attending a yacht race over the weekend — on the very day, mind you, that Obama and Biden hit the links for a few hours — and besides, they need Hayward as their Snidely Whiplash to keep the public focused on blaming someone other than Obama for the spill.

Two: Burton could have insisted that Hayward deserves every bit of grief he gets but thrown conservatives a bone by admitting that the left’s criticism of Bush for spending time in Crawford or playing golf during the early days of the war was also overblown and unfair. The problem? Bush is an even bigger, more useful villain in the Hopenchange pageant than Hayward is, sort of an Emperor Palpatine to BP’s Darth Vader. Can’t go defending him, especially if it means knocking lefties who are already peeved with The One for not quite being the socialist of their dreams.

Three: Burton could have dodged the question and then said something smug and tin-eared about how much better off we all are when Obama gets to practice his putting. Any guesses which option he chose? Click play and watch this drive.

what a water carrying tool this Bill Burton guy….all of that build up for such a flaccid climax: “all of the time the president spent securing the ‘historic (er, WTF?) deal’ to put $20bill in escrow…and flying to Ohio for his 10min speech”…and we are all benefitting from what? how? Is he suggesting that, if POTUS didn’t putt a few holes, then we’d be seeing Barack the Maleficent? He’d be finding some asses to kick?…..

what a load of crap from these guys.

anyone see where my ball went? I thought I had a good shot over here/

A LITTLE TIME OFF to clear his mind??? Good grief.

iceman1960 on June 21, 2010 at 7:01 PM

Aren’t we much safer when Obama is out on the golf course rather than in the Oval Office attending to his leftwing business? I say give them all a permanent vacation asap.

eaglewingz08 on June 21, 2010 at 7:02 PM

Well he needs some time off from all the self-asskicking he must be doing each and every minute of each and every day. Soon he will have to have a pillow on his backsides.

Or take off the little sign taped back there saying KICK ME, I DESERVE IT.

ajacksonian on June 21, 2010 at 7:03 PM

I for one, wish he did nothing at all but play golf.

A LITTLE TIME OFF to clear his mind???

Didn’t Obama castigate John McCain during the ’08 election for not being able to to 2 things at once?

portlandon on June 21, 2010 at 7:21 PM

Does the whole world good when he takes time off. I think he should take MORE time off…. Like the next two and a half years..

LegendHasIt on June 21, 2010 at 7:34 PM

I heard a longer version of this interchange. Did you catch Burton’s snarky crack about how if Tony Hayward wanted to put a skimmer on his yacht and sail it over to help with the spill they’d be happy to have him? Does that mean they’d be willing to waive the Jones Act for Tony Hayward’s yacht and let a presumably foreign-owned and foreign-crewed ship into US waters to help?

Jill1066 on June 21, 2010 at 7:36 PM

You know, nothing says “Father’s Day” like abandoning your family to play golf with an idiot. Must be one of those “sacred” moments he blathered about fathers the other day. Maybe PBO is a love child of Gaffetastic Joe…

Read this, and get really, really mad – it applies to what Burton said the pres. ‘worked’ on last week.

Schadenfreude on June 21, 2010 at 5:46 PM

He had to get back to watch his favorite Baseball team. The Chicago White Stocks coached by Fozzy Glenn from Brazil, and Jack Rios and Juan Peter in the outfield. He was so disappointed when those guys didn’t show he refused to do the wave.

cobrakai99 on June 21, 2010 at 8:46 PM

Trouble is, the left wing rolls on even while Obama “sleeps”.

It’s all the czars/bureaucrats/congress doing the heavy lifting to take the USA down.

0-boy just signs the checks.

I agree with this guy the less Obama is on the job the better :)

lavell12 on June 21, 2010 at 9:07 PM

When I need a palate cleanser, I like to watch one of the many Megyn Kelly eviscerations of this supercilious, smug, contemptible twit.

But at least he’s right on this one. When Jugears golfs, at least he isn’t actively screwing things up.

Jeez, I can’t wait to get rid of this crew. Let the hearings begin!

mr.blacksheep on June 21, 2010 at 9:20 PM

I can only speak for myself, but anytime Obama is out of the White House I feel better. So technically I guess he’s right.

Onus on June 21, 2010 at 9:25 PM

Gibbs and Burton: they’re douchetastic!!

It makes you wonder if obambi went out and purposefully found 2 people more smug, arrogant, and unlikable than he, just so that he would look better in front of the press.

HAnthonyWayne on June 21, 2010 at 10:31 PM

Awwww. That’s cute. When did the White House start hiring high schoolers to do press briefings?

Honestly, I don’t think golf is a time-intensive enough hobby for President Kickass. He should start training for the Ironman or for climbing Mt Everest, or something. That would be much better for the country.

bitsy on June 21, 2010 at 10:32 PM

So…does anyone ever point out that Obama sucks at golf? He’s apparently scoring in the high 100′s, toward 110. That’s pathetic for a guy who fancies himself an athlete.

Jaibones on June 21, 2010 at 10:43 PM

A LITTLE TIME OFF to clear his mind???

Kind of hard to clear that which is empty, isn’t it?

/Well with good thoughts anyway. Be good if he could clear out the dark destructive thoughts guiding his demolition of the US.

AZfederalist on June 21, 2010 at 10:58 PM

Smart-mouth little puke Burton smugly suggested that Tony put a skimmer on the yacht and come down to help. Sorry dumbass. The Dutch already tried and you stupid f*cks said NO!!!!!

Mr. Grump on June 21, 2010 at 11:52 PM

Well, he might as well because he isn’t doing anything else of any value and never will. God save us. This idiot won’t and can’t.

1. Burton is a smug jackass.

2. Obama promised he “would not rest until this well is shut, the environment is repaired, and the cleanup is complete.”

3. Obama said “I will not rest until business are investing again, and businesses are hiring again” (Nov. 23)

4. “I will not rest until all Americans who want work can find work,” he said during a Rose Garden appearance before reporters. (Nov.6, 2009)

TN Mom on June 22, 2010 at 12:30 AM

I wouldn’t be surprised if “clearing his mind” involved chain smoking through the entire round of golf.

Jaibones on June 21, 2010 at 10:43 PM

From what I’ve seen, he’s not that great a basketball player either.

He should look at golf more pragmatically. He is terrible and the only way he is going to get better is to practice and play. However, he only needs to wait two more years and then he will have the rest of his life to play all the golf he wants. In the meantime, it would be nice if he tried to run the country.

Mallard T. Drake on June 22, 2010 at 2:29 AM

Barack Obama parties more, plays more, vacations more than any chief executive that I know of. How does he connect to hard working americans who are lucky to get 1 or 2 rounds of golf in a year, maybe two weeks of vacation and an occasional holiday? How!!!?

He applied for and asked for this job. It’s not meant to be a cakewalk.

He wants all the glamor and accoutrements of the job and none of the headache. The phone has been ringing at 3AM since he took office and it keeps going to voicemail.

James on June 22, 2010 at 8:45 AM

I thought Obama had the power to heal the oceans with the mere attainment of the office. Maybe he truly believes that him being president is enough to heal the oceans.

That means he spends more time walking after the ball, and keeps him lean and mean and kewl, and he uses lots of green energy on the green.
