Video: The lost J.D. Hayworth infomercial

posted at 4:12 pm on June 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

Alternate headline: “McCain rival maybe a little too maverick-y.” John McCormack’s touting this as a potential campaign-ender, but is it really? It’s FUBAR, sure, but hasn’t JD already been thoroughly kookified by McCain’s attack ads, including one describing him as among the very dumbest members of Congress? Crankishness was priced into the value of his political stock long ago. Besides, most of the people who are still with him at this point are surely diehard McCain-haters, prone to shiver at the mere mention of the word “Maverick.” Hayworth could don a Lesko jacket and jaunty Willy Wonka top hat and start spinning like Julie Andrews in “The Sound of Music” shouting “freeee moneeey” and that crowd would still vote for him.

He’ll dip a few points in the polls and almost certainly lose to McCain in August, but reports of his political death are, I suspect, greatly exaggerated. As for the fact that the self-styled tea-party candidate is caught on camera here encouraging federal handouts, I don’t see that as fatal either. Remember, according to that NYT poll of tea partiers back in April, 62 percent think the benefits of social security and Medicare outweigh the costs. They may hate government handouts in the abstract, and they may bristle at the prospect of diverting more taxpayer money to failing corporations in the form of bailouts, but when it comes to the working joe getting a little out of the system he’s been paying into his whole life, they seem reasonably serene. Exit question: On a scale from one to 10, how much damage is done here?

He’s toast. He’s so toasted he’d cajun-style, but it’s not like McCain is wowing them here, either.

And yet, he would still be an improvement over Backstabbin’ Backdoor John McCain. I mean, the Democrat would be an improvement over McCain; an empty seat would be an improvement over McCain. Ah well, I’ve given up hope for things improving in my lifetime. I honestly don’t care anymore. But I still would love to see McCain lose.

While I’ll live if McCain wins, and don’t really like Hayworth, the problem with McCain and why he generates such hate is b/c he only ever has any passion when it comes to going after conservatives. And, he gives the media credibility when they call conservatives crazy or racist or whatever b/c he will subtly if not outright agree with the media 1/2 the time.

Because of his personal history, independents like him, but he never uses that political capital for conservative causes, only to attack conservatives.

So, on balance, I think he hurts conservative causes more than he helps them.

I mean, seriously – aside from his support for the WOT, what conservative policy has he ever really fought for? I can name you a bunch of liberal (or at least anti-conservative) policies that he has fought hard and passionately for. I can’t think of a single conservative policy he has done the same for.

And, he gives the media credibility when they call conservatives crazy or racist or whatever b/c he will subtly if not outright agree with the media 1/2 the time.

You do understand that with JMac everything is personal. He spent the 2000 campaign in sulky mode over his loss to Dubya and blamed conservatives for it. And then he got invited on the Daily Show lots of times because of it, which since JMac really likes to hear himself talk, led to him being more mavericky. So it’s not actually principled, it’s all what McCain sees as personal slights if that helps. The only things McCain cares about in a principled manner are porkbarrel spending and national defense.

You’ll notice that since everything is personal with McCain all the hate has moved from the Republicans to Obama. McCain really, really doesn’t like Obama.

Illinidiva on June 21, 2010 at 5:11 PM

I don’t understand what is so bad about getting some of that “Free Obama” money?

*sigh* I think Hayworth is a fairly loathsome buffoon. But it’s just so sad in a state that has great folks like Jeff Flake & John Shadegg the people of AZ have to settle for McCain.

There’s several good candidates for Shadegg’s seat, couldn’t one of them challenged McCain? I know most are young, but still, it is a year when true outsiders & up & comers are flourishing.

McCain opposed Bush’s tax cuts

Gang of 14

McCain-Feingold (ruled unconstitutional by SCOTUS)

He believes in Global Warming now fashionably “climate change”

He supported TARP

He supported closing GITMO

portlandon on June 21, 2010 at 5:34 PM

It isn’t his insanity which disqualifies Hayworth, it is his near-complete lack of ethics and near-total disdain for the law. Also, he was one of the leading Republican earmarkers while in Congress, ensuring his lobbyist pals got what they paid him for. Almost alone among recipients of tainted Abramoff money, Hayworth never returned any of the money or apologized for taking it in the first place, nor did he ever reimburse Abramoff for the use of Jack’s stadium sky box for fund-raising events (as required by law).
`
If you support Hayworth, you have to be BOTH stupid and dishonest.

Adjoran on June 21, 2010 at 5:38 PM

I don’t see what so wrong with telling people where to get the money that the gov’t is giving out.

What’s wrong is the fact that the gov’t is giving the money out and someone is going to get it. We have to get rid of the people who are giving out the money and get people who will stop these kinds of give away programs.
