Obama WH to illegals: We’ll help you get paid fairly

posted at 1:36 pm on June 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Via FoxNation, behold the most tone-deaf public-service announcement — yet — from the Obama administration. The US government occasionally conducts raids on employers who hire illegal immigrants as workers, even during Barack Obama’s term of office. Now suddenly Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has established a hotline number, not for people to tip the government to employers breaking the law, but to act as an agent for illegals to make sure they get paid “fairly”:

Does it occur to the White House at all that “undocumented” workers are breaking the law themselves? They shouldn’t be exploited, but then again, they shouldn’t be here to be exploited, either.  At the same time that the Obama administration contemplates a lawsuit against Arizona to stop them from enforcing immigration law, they’re working on a program that supports the people breaking that law, all while unemployment continues at a high rate long after their stimulus plans have run aground.  Instead of enforcing the law – which is, after all, the raison d’être of the executive branch — they’re conspiring to help people break it, and with our tax dollars, no less.

Of course, this could be an elaborate ruse to find new sites to raid.  The political fallout from that would be fun to watch, but alas, it seems that despite the cheesy graphics and extraordinarily bad concept, Obama and his team are serious about helping illegal immigrants get paid more for their work.

Update: Stephen Gutowski reports that this is a work-around for a Supreme Court decision that ruled that illegal immigrants don’t have standing to fight wage issues:

Basically they know that they’re violating the intention of the supreme court’s ruling in Hoffman Plastics but they don’t give a damn. They throw up the weak argument the ruling only applied to the specific law that was addressed in the case. However, I think the court is clearly saying that the government can’t force employers to pay wages that couldn’t have been legally earned in the first place.

This all makes me wonder if Obama’s DOL is going to make sure that drug dealers are paid a “fair” wage by the gangs that employ them? I mean is that not the same situation? An employer which knowingly illegally employs someone and exploits them?

Will Obama’s DOL make sure all people illegally employed are paid a “fair” wage or just the ones whose political cause they support? And even if they do try to help all people employed illegally does that make it any better? How can anybody justify any of this as a good idea?

The only interest that the government should have is enforcing the border and immigration laws.

We need to make sure as many Americans as possible see this ad. I’m sure this ad is being targeted only in spanish speaking media – but we need to get this pushed to every possible media outlet so that they can’t deny they are doing this.

They shouldn’t be exploited, but then again, they shouldn’t be here to be exploited, either.

That’s the same thing.

they shouldn’t be here to exploit the laws, perhaps.

What is the socialist leftwing paradise of Mexico doing to pay their citizens more fairly? That’s the real question here – maybe an Obamatron can explain it to everyone and “educate” us all.

If this is such a racist, sexist, hate-filled country of bigots, then why are these people coming here?

Johnnyreb on June 21, 2010 at 1:46 PM

Well Faraway, you are right, as far as the just-trying-to-make-a-better-life crowd goes. You still have to step up the border efforts though to stop the smuggling of drugs and other contraband, or AQ types trying to slip in. Those folks won’t care about employment in any case.

JamesLee on June 21, 2010 at 1:46 PM

How twisted can things get?

If they’re paid “fairly” employers hiring them and paying them cash under the table will then have to pay ss tax on them, provide insurance, fill out paper work, etc. In other words, illegals are working at an advantage over American workers to begin with.

BowHuntingTexas on June 21, 2010 at 1:47 PM

I think it’s great on two hands. First, this put the Obama-unicorn label on something that a hypothetically competent GOP could use.
Second, um, the whole point about employing illegals for our friends in the business world is that the illegals are paid unfairly. That is, if illegals suddenly cost as much as legals…there’s no incentive to break the law to hire them.
Exit question? bug or feature?

joeindc44 on June 21, 2010 at 1:47 PM

Mildly ironic that the ad was in English.

hungrymongo on June 21, 2010 at 1:47 PM

If they can’t be exploited to keep wages artificially low – then there is no reason for the majority of them to be here at all. Most of them don’t add a lot of value to the country.

I realize we need hotel maids, farm labor, landscapers, day workers, restaurant help and other non-skilled labor and that’s what teenagers are for.

Send these people home and let the kids work. It’ll do them and the country some good.

Yep. Cloward/Piven is just the final step in a giant ruse. Marx started a fake movement; the Nazis, Fascists, Moaists and Soviets sold the disinformation campaign by murdering a hundred million people. And today, nearly every country in the free world are joined together in a pyramid scheme based on nothing but debt.

All so Obama’s trap could be sprung, sending a handful of gullible wetbacks across the border.

The oldest trick in the book really. Any fool could see it coming a mile away.

Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A):

A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:

* assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or

This is Chicago, folks. It’s the Dem Party. This is who they are.

Remember this when they threaten to throw you in jail for refusing to buy government health care.

Everything they do threatens our civil society. Rules apply for some but not others. Why? Because they want to buy a voting block – with your money.

They will find that law abiding citizens will no longer feel they need to comply. They will revolt, and as things fall apart the Democrats will deny responsibility.

This is why you are seeing Chris Matthews, along with other members of the so-called media, demonized ordinary citizens. Their politicians are doing it as well. But illegals are exempt.

Things are rapidly becoming unglued, and the only people to blame are the Democrats and this administration. The Republicans failed us on the illegal issue, but the Dems are bringing to full head.

Jimbo3 on June 21, 2010 at 1:58 PM

Frankly, I don’t care how/what/when illegals are paid. I want them not to be here and not to get paid for working in america illegally at all. The idea that there is a “fair” or “legal” wage for someone to come here illegally and work illegally is baffling. The whole point about being illegal is that you are illegal.

And, the idea of a “fair” wage is interesting. Fair to who? Obviously, the illegals think the wages are more than fair, or they would not be flooding our country to obtain those wages. Or, you could take the opposite tact, who in the world really believes what they are being paid is “fair”? I think I should get much more than I do. I’m sure every laborer feels the same way.

The only “fair” wage is what the market demands. If you can get someone to do the job for $1 / hour – then that is a fair wage. If nobody will do it for $1 / hour, it is not a fair wage.

Or do you mean, “Minium wage” or some other thing? Minimum wage is not a “fair” wage, it is simply an arbitrary wage set by law. Should these employers be paying the minimum wage? Yes, it is the law. Should these illegals not be in this country and not be working in this country? Yes, it is the law. Which is worse for America? Which is the bigger crime from a policy standpoint?

Monkeytoe on June 21, 2010 at 2:09 PM

Don’t work illegally.

Next topic.

I am shocked, yet I am not shocked… holy crap!

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has established a hotline number, not for people to tip the government to employers breaking the law, but to act as an agent for illegals to make sure they get paid “fairly”:

A “fair” wage for somebody in this country illegally is ZERO. Is that what they want?

Why doesn’t the Government go to border states (TX, NM, AZ, CA) and make sure everybody is paid at least minimum wage? That would remove the incentive for hiring illegal aliens!

USA to Mexicans: You want minimum wage, get a green card!

Hilda Solis is a socialist.

Think of it as a massive voter registration drive.

Yeah, I know it is! Our chap, Lindsay G., is one of the big proponents of this idiocy.

What the WH through Solis appears to be doing is breaking the law. Seems actionable to me.

–So you’re okay with allowing employers to threaten to turn in illegal workers unless they accept wages below the minimum wage, ignore safety violations, etc?

Jimbo3 on June 21, 2010 at 2:07 PM

So you are o.k. with the administration helping people break the law? Helping to ensure that more illegals come to america? The Gov’t should be enforcing the border, enforcing immigration laws, investigating illegals working; prosecuting businesses for hiring illegals. the gov’t should not be helping illegals obtain the fruit of their illegality.

If the administration’s position was that they would a) deport the illegal; b) prosecute the company; and c) then get whatever back-pay differential the illegal is owed I would have no problem with this.

But you and I both know that only “C” is going to happen.

What about taxes ?
Illegals who are paid in cash or illegals who use stolen TIN # to claim fraudelent tax refunds
or illegals who work for cash and use stolen SS# to get welfare for themselves and their anchor-babaies,
what about them ?
Illegals are not coming here to work, its a myth which the LaRaza types want us to believe. A very small %age of illegals actually work. Jailing employers of illegals will never solve the problem.
Unless its impossible for illegals to get welfare and
food-stamps etc and unless we stop paying for pre-natal care, birth, food-stamps, disabilities, medical, schooling, housing litigation, public-defenders,college education etc of anchor-babies, this problem will never ever go away.
Every illegal knows what to do once it gets inside the US :
1. Go to a church to find local contact to get fake ID

2. Get a US citizen to marry him/her

3. Until that happens, women get themselves pregnant to get on taxpayer’s dole, while men get on disability, with a stolen ID ofcourse.

4. Work for cash @ a job which the cayote ‘finds’ for you, to payoff the cayote.
The politicians are so behind the curve on this issue.

macncheez on June 21, 2010 at 2:14 PM

–That doesn’t mean they’re getting paid fairly. It means that, net, the wages they can get are better than the wages they can get in Mexico. Would you be in favor of letting employers threaten to turn in illegal workers unless the workers agreed to a fifty percent reduction in wages?

Jimbo3 on June 21, 2010 at 1:58 PM

“Getting paid fairly” has got nothing to do with it. They’re here illegally; they’re working here illegally. Two things ought to happen if anyone takes advantage of this offer: (1) the employer is fined according to the law and (2) the illegal aliens are sent back to whence they came according to the law.

Doesn’t this reinforce Sen. Kyl’s claim?

Like Barone said this morning in his article…

Obama is the Valdimir Putin of the US, except Putin is an effective thug.
