Obama WH to illegals: We’ll help you get paid fairly

posted at 1:36 pm on June 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Via FoxNation, behold the most tone-deaf public-service announcement — yet — from the Obama administration. The US government occasionally conducts raids on employers who hire illegal immigrants as workers, even during Barack Obama’s term of office. Now suddenly Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has established a hotline number, not for people to tip the government to employers breaking the law, but to act as an agent for illegals to make sure they get paid “fairly”:

Does it occur to the White House at all that “undocumented” workers are breaking the law themselves? They shouldn’t be exploited, but then again, they shouldn’t be here to be exploited, either.  At the same time that the Obama administration contemplates a lawsuit against Arizona to stop them from enforcing immigration law, they’re working on a program that supports the people breaking that law, all while unemployment continues at a high rate long after their stimulus plans have run aground.  Instead of enforcing the law – which is, after all, the raison d’être of the executive branch — they’re conspiring to help people break it, and with our tax dollars, no less.

Of course, this could be an elaborate ruse to find new sites to raid.  The political fallout from that would be fun to watch, but alas, it seems that despite the cheesy graphics and extraordinarily bad concept, Obama and his team are serious about helping illegal immigrants get paid more for their work.

Update: Stephen Gutowski reports that this is a work-around for a Supreme Court decision that ruled that illegal immigrants don’t have standing to fight wage issues:

Basically they know that they’re violating the intention of the supreme court’s ruling in Hoffman Plastics but they don’t give a damn. They throw up the weak argument the ruling only applied to the specific law that was addressed in the case. However, I think the court is clearly saying that the government can’t force employers to pay wages that couldn’t have been legally earned in the first place.

This all makes me wonder if Obama’s DOL is going to make sure that drug dealers are paid a “fair” wage by the gangs that employ them? I mean is that not the same situation? An employer which knowingly illegally employs someone and exploits them?

Will Obama’s DOL make sure all people illegally employed are paid a “fair” wage or just the ones whose political cause they support? And even if they do try to help all people employed illegally does that make it any better? How can anybody justify any of this as a good idea?

The only interest that the government should have is enforcing the border and immigration laws.

My guess is they are also going to give the IRS the info on the people they help get paid higher wages so they can pay their fair share of taxes as well, right?/

txmomof6 on June 21, 2010 at 3:25 PM

The employer doesn’t take as big a hit for turning the illegal in as the illegal does for getting deported, and the illegal will never see that pay increase anyway, so it is an effective deterrent.

Count to 10 on June 21, 2010 at 3:19 PM

It depends on how many illegals are being hired. I agree that the illegal has more to lose except that the illegal can always just leave. There are plenty of other similarly low-paying jobs looking for illegals – there are even plenty that pay at or above minimum wage.

And all an illegal needs to be “legal” is the right paperwork, which plenty of them get on their own anyway.

So, what makes any of you folks think these people are coming here to work? How many jobs could there possibly be at this point? I invite your attention to this article:

From the L.A. Times
1. 40% of all workers in L.A. County ( L.A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes. This is because they are predominantly illegal immigrants, working without a green card.
2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.
4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by US taxpayers.
5. Nearly 25% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.
6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.

7. The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.

8. Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal immigrants. 9. 21 radio stations in L.A. are Spanish Speaking.

10. In L.A. County 5.1 million people speak English, 3.9 million speak Spanish. (There are 10.2 million people in L.A. County ).

(All of the above are from the Los Angeles Times)
Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29% are on welfare.
Over 70% of the United States ‘ annual population growth results from immigration and over 90% in California, Florida , and New York .
29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens.

We are a bunch of fools for letting this continue.

Esthier on June 21, 2010 at 3:09 PM

Particularly irksome is the illegal alien Mexican mantra that the American West really is theirs to pirate. Even that argument holds no substance because the Mexicans are not the indigenous tribes of America, either in the US or in Mexico.

But the indigenous native tribes still existing in Mexico’s mountain villages have been trying for decades to fix things, trying to be responsible for themselves as revolutionaries. There is no good end to Mexico’s untold revolution. It used to get some coverage in the US. The Mexican media fears to cover it within Mexico for the obvious reasons of being terrorized by their own government. Communism sells too easily amongst peasants with the universally ignorant mantra: CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN. You would lay the responsibility to become educated and politically powerful upon the ignorant masses of peasants, and the middle class that relies completely upon the aristocrats for sustenance from work.

At this point, I wonder how the indigenous native tribes fair, against or for the drug cartels. And I blame the educated upper class in Mexico for abusing their poor, maintaining the caste system and monopoly on power.

I was working in the mortgage business years ago, and I realized that the government was accepting loan applications from illegals. At least, to my mind, they were not properly documented. This was in the day of the FNMA fiasco, Gorelick, Raines, et. al.

I QUIT . The guy who ran my office told me to work on the loans, and I told him to, “Pheck Off!”

For any sane person, that was the handwriting on the wall. We already had all the no-docs, multiple welfare names on the same loan app. deals. It was obviously a disaster in the making.

I told him that although I was a peon, a nobody, there was no way on earth I would sign my name on any piece of paper for those loans.

I walked out.

Yes, I agree.

/The “right to work state” references legislation that denies unions monopoly. Hence, CA, AZ, NM, and TX skilled laborers don’t “benefit” by joining unions because union membership is not mandatory for employment, and the employers are going to hire the non-union members. That would have been well and good EXCEPT that the federal government has determined to abstain from enforcing immigration law. And here we are.

Heralder on June 21, 2010 at 4:40 PM

An ironic position for the left indeed, considering one of the primary objectives of the original “Progressive” minimum wage laws was to drive southern blacks and other non-white immigrants out of the labor force altogether, under the assumption that, if forced to pay the same wage, employers would rather hire white people (the corollary belief being that, deprived of income, such “inferiors” would also stop reproducing).

I don’t think it worked out quite as planned the first time, but I expect a drying-up of positions for illegal non-English speakers would likely take place today (largely because most of the sub-minimum, untaxed positions would simply cease to exist, and for those few that remained, why deal with communication problems?).

Jimbozo3 is right: this is a moral conundrum commonly reported by illegals. Nine out of ten illegals pinched by ICE agents report that they intended to return home any day now, but they have overdue fees at the video rental store for which they’ve lost the receipt, and they couldn’t just pack up and take off in good conscience until they settled this debt.

The Mexican government prints maps of border US states, leaves bottles of water at the border, and literally encourages their citizens through media advertisements to illegally immigrate into the US, lest you feign ignorance that the Mexican government imprisons all illegal aliens in Mexico.

The Mexican government prohibits their citizens from owning or possessing any firearms, and fails to provide country villages with any police protection despite the drug lords kidnapping, beating and killing husbands and fathers who defy crime and teach their children to be good people.

1) From what I can find, Article 10 of the Mexican Constitution declares the right to bear arms, but civilians can’t own a fire arm of any caliber used, tested, or currently in use by the Mexican Government or Military, meaning that the can only have handguns.

2). MEXICO CITY — Ten federal police officers were killed Monday after being attacked by unidentified gunmen near a vocational high school in western Mexico.

The officers were returning from a patrol when they came under fire from the gang in the city of Zitacuaro in western Michoacan state, the federal Public Safety Department said in a statement

The Institute for Mexicans Abroad, an autonomous government agency that supports Mexicans living and working in the United States, called for boycotts of Tempe, Arizona-based US Airways, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Phoenix Suns until those organizations denounce the law.

Mexican legislators of all political stripes have called on the government of President Felipe Calderon to consider breaking commercial ties with Arizona. The government has issued a travel alert for the state, warning that migrants face an adverse political environment there.

The Mexican government’s commitment to the Mexicans who live and work abroad led to the creation of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior, IME), a decentralized agency of the Foreign Ministry.

shanimal on June 21, 2010 at 10:30 PM

Just another example of where he stands.

I did not see mentioned that the second largest source of natioal wealth in Mexico, after the state oil, is the money that illegals send home to their families in Mexico. That is why we have the two faced stand of the Mexican president on the issue. He needs illegals to be here and the more that are, the greater the wealth of his country.

Money that leaves out nation without being balanced out by trade is money that is lost to our country. The most basic economic model is a circle with the worker/consumer on one side and the factory/employer on the other. As long as the money stays within that circle, people have jobs and money to buy things they need or want and factoroies have profits to use to make and sell products the people need or want. Its a simple model of a functioning economy. If you start taking money out of the workers side and sending it off to somewhere eles (exports) but you have money coming in to the factory side (imports) you still have a balanced economy where the people have jobs and factories produce. In the case of the illegals sending money home, we have money being removed from the system. The US workers buy less with the money that remains. The factories losses profits and are unable to manutactor as much as they used to. Workers are no longer needed for the new lower production levels. Works are removed from the system to create a balance. ( Just to keep it simple I am ignoring that unemployed workers are being create as well as the fact that the government is removing money from the factory/producer to continue paying the no longer employed workers, with the expected result that the factory/employer will have to reduce the number of workers to match the amount of goods they can afford to produce while still paying for unproductive workers.) As long as that drain from the workers/consumers side on the economic system remains with money being removed from the exconomic model, the worse the situaiton becomes. Increasing the wages of the illegals only increases the problem for the US consumer/workers and the producer/employer.

This is just a basic middle school example of economics but it simplicity is no less a model of real ecomomics than ones filled with the variables of more complexed models. It is at least one that obama should be able to understand and yet obviously does not. Might be a reason for that if you consider that when the big boys got to together with BP he was there long enough for introductions then shooed. Now it seems there is going to be another big meeting with the insurance “executives” and he is suppose to make a short appearance then leave. We should not wonder why he plays golf, basketball and hangs out in concerts and parties. He would be bored to death otherwise since they only need him once in a while to stand up and read his scripts or run and do a quick photo op.

The Obama Administration is the most inept in my lifetime already (started with Ike), but I’ll give them credit for not being shy about imposing their agenda “through any means necessary.”
`
The only thing keeping them from just grabbing total dictatorial power is the United States Armed Services, who would uphold their oath.

I cannot believe that Jimbo3 actually pretends not to know that the Mexican gov’t encourage and supports illegal immigration to the U.S. That simply demonstrates his complete dishonesty, which should not surprise anyone coming from a liberal. From the books that the Mexican gov’t has produces, to the Matricular I.D.’s their embassies give out, to various other actions the gov’t has taken, all regularly reported in the media, it is difficult to believe anyone does not know this.

His only argument appears to be that the immigration laws do not matter and should not be enforced, but the minimum wage laws MUST be enforced as to illegal immigrants. Way to pick and chose the laws you believe it buddy. God forbid that America treat illegal immigrants the way Mexico does. God forbid the U.S. enforce its souther border even half as strongly as Mexico does. God forbid that the U.S. even have immigration laws. We should just let anyone who wants to come to america and receive entitlements. There is no valid reason for the U.S. to have immigration laws.

YOu can’t argue with someone who is as dishonest as a leftist is. They will make up facts, deny actual facts, and refuse to apply logic. It is both sad and frightening.

Lady, you are not on our side. I am ashamed of you and your boss and your fellow travelers.

We should be able to under-pay these friggin’ illegals. It’s the only way they add value to our economy.

JackM on June 22, 2010 at 4:30 PM

DOES ANYONE IN WASHINGTON WORK FOR AMERICAN CITIZENS????

Illegals should be paid only via free room and board in a jail of our choice.

My personal opiniuon is that this should be an impeachable offense. He and his people are paid to take care of AMERICA, not ILLEGAL aliens!
In My Humble Opinion!
