Mika Brzezinski: I’m working with the White House on oil spill talking points

posted at 6:55 pm on June 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

At first I thought she was joking, then I remembered that Obama’s team has been known to interact with Scarborough and crew while they’re live on the air, so … yeah, she’s got some contacts and is probably telling the truth. As lame as it is to be acting as a de facto administration spokesman, though, is there any ethical issue here if she discloses what she’s doing? I’m loath to beat up on her, partly because she’s been willing to tell inconvenient truths about her own side in the past and partly because, on a show as freewheeling as this one, I can understand an “any weapon to hand” approach to keep the conversation moving. If the White House hands her a “fact” that she confirms as factual and is upfront about where it’s coming from, what’s the harm? It’s her reputation to do with what she likes, and there’s no blackout on conservative viewpoints on this show (unlike certain other MSNBC fare which we shall not mention). Just remember when that gay guy reporter was supposedly on the Bush White House ‘payroll’, and the media storm it created. So, if the shoe is on the other foot, shouldn’t the lamestream media’s reaction be comparable?
Otherwise, there might be some hint of bias? And we know the lamestream media is not, gasp, biased, in favor of a certain party beginning with d and ending with rat.

So that explains all the typos.

ThePrez on June 21, 2010 at 7:03 PM

From the L.A. Times, via Drudge:

“After weeks of frustration watching floating booms fail to keep oil out of entry passes, the leaders of Jefferson Parish decided to take a bolder action by importing the barges. More than 2 million feet of boom has been deployed in the gulf, but rough seas, winds and wave after wave of oil can limit the effectiveness of boom.

With the state’s economy — including fishing and tourist industries — devastated by the largest oil spill in U.S. history, angry Louisiana officials have pushed for more aggressive government action to protect shores and bayous. Two weeks ago, they won approval for a controversial plan to build sand berms in an attempt to protect barrier islands.

The barges in Barataria Bay are 110 feet to 200 feet long and are filled with water to lower the hulls 6 feet, creating an underwater wall, Bonano said. The boats were being lined up at an angle to steer oil into shallow waters, where it could be easily recovered by skimmers, Bonano said.

Parish officials expect to have 63 barges deployed by next Sunday. If the barges work, Bonano said they could eventually be replaced with rock berms, which would require approval from the Army Corps of Engineers.”

——–

So NOW they try to protect Barataria Bay, the richest fishery in Louisiana??? On Day SIXTY-WHAT?

I was at the Town Hall in Baldwin, La. on Thursday – Barataria Bay is SOAKED with oil!!

I call bullshit.

I give her a bit of a pass because she’s so dim that she probably doesn’t realize how many gaffes she commits by exposing exactly what the administration is trying to do.

This doesn’t sound like what people are making it out to be. It sounds like the White House wanted to respond to something Rudy said about them doing nothing in response to the spill, and they’re putting together a whole packet of information for Mika. Like Allah suggested, it sounds more like a matter of a source compiling information to give to a journalist – a friendly journalist, to be sure – the journalist checking it out and getting ready to use it.

That’s not the same as Mike coaching them with PR strategies. There, I think, you would definitely have an ethics issue as the journalism world usually perceives it.

Perhaps I’m a cyncial old coot, but I have zero faith in a mainstream journalist, especially one working for MSNBC, to verify and/or fact-check anything from this White House.

SouthernGent on June 21, 2010 at 7:15 PM

If the White House hands her a ‘fact’ that she confirms as factual and is upfront about where it’s coming from, what’s the harm?”

I guess that doesn’t bother me as much as in previous years when these types were surreptitiously (IMO) fed WH talking points and parroted them off as facts to an unknowing public. It does represent a break away from the we’re-objective-journalists-but-closet-shills that has been endemic amongst her colleagues. So, I’ll give her a +2 for honesty and a +0.5 for the yellow icing. ;)

ted c on June 21, 2010 at 7:15 PM

Didn’t bother me; it’s basically an admition she needs info from a source to engage in the conversation. She takes her lumps for the source, but it’s not a big deal. Now I want to know what Rudy said.

The network and cable media (both left and right) have turned into a comical nightmare for newswatchers. Hard to imagine they will ever regain their integrity. I hate to think we are stuck with this. Hopefully someone or some channel will emerge with a Russert-like disposition, rather than what we have now.

sherry on June 21, 2010 at 7:25 PM

I’d like to know if she called the White House about Rudy, or if the White House called her about Rudy. What made her think Rudy was spewing lies?

All I can think about when I hear stuff like this is how Scooter Libby got himself in trouble by calling MSNBC to tell them Chris Matthews was wrong about Cheney sending Wilson to Niger.

Mika is alright. She’s not parroting talking points when she mentions the source, which lets us know to treat them with skepticism. She kinda cute too. Not so young anymore, but…neither am I.

Does anyone remember the flap over Armstrong Williams, who the Bush Administration apparently paid to include their talking points in his opinions. Anyway, does anyone remember the apoplectic Democrats when this came out. Now, this was Armstrong Williams, who isn’t quite a national figure.

Now, we have an employee of NBC News (albeit on the minor league MSNBC) admitting she is giving the Obama Administration guidance on their talking points and she’s actually refining them on a morning talk show. NOw, how convenient is that? I’m waiting for the first LSM outlet to claim outrage. All I’ve heard so far is crickets.

It’s really great when the LSM makes it so easy to prove how biased they are.

bflat879 on June 21, 2010 at 7:43 PM

I am just not so sure that Mika “verified” squat about her large stack of talking points. I have seen Mika take on-air cell phone calls direct from Valerie Jarrett and then spout off as if that message were God’s truth.

Good for Mika to admit she was repeating “talking points,” she’d assembled from the White House, but Mika, after shuffling through about 10 sheets of paper, had to at least say what she was riffling through.

I think of Mika as a full on White House apologist/plant. While she’s not terribly bright, Mika is a useful, often funny and good-natured foil for Scarborough.

I actually like Morning Joe, but Mika’s “What else is he supposed to do?” lately began to grate about a month ago. Yelling at the tv isn’t the best that early in the morning. It is the only watchable thing on that channel.

Joe S. though has definitely taken his 30 pieces of silver to be employed there, he’s been neutered. I guess with Buchannan they want him to give the random horrible opinion so they just let him be himself.

If Brzezinski believes Giuliani had his facts wrong, have her book a White House official to straighten things out. But for Mika to be collaborating directly with the Obama admin in mounting a defense is unseemly at best. Then again, credit Mika for saying out loud what surely happens with many others behind the scenes.

They have already mentioned that they hear from the wh almost every day to get their perspective. She is a joke and I’m getting madder and madder at Scarborough. He criticizes the conservatives all the time and makes suggestions to help obama.

Do you believe that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander? Somehow, I strongly doubt it, considering that someone you’re very partial to said the following about conservatives here not so long ago: “Yeah, I figured someone would start splitting hairs about that. Given the tenor of the support for this guy, my sense is the pass he’s been given by conservatives doesn’t depend on his particular specialty or office hours. It’s more of a “his labor, his rules!” thing. Which, I maintain, would go right out the window were the partisan roles here reversed.”
