Florida senator: Obama told me we can’t deploy oil skimmers because they might be needed elsewhere
posted at 10:23 pm on June 21, 2010 by Allahpundit
A quickie but goodie courtesy of The Shark Tank, which wrangled this interview with LeMieux after a meeting of the Florida GOP. I’d be curious to know when, precisely, O told him that we can’t spare an all-hands-on-deck approach with American skimmers — although given the fact that that remains the policy today, their convo might as well have happened yesterday. As for foreign skimmers, Rob Bluey asks the question of the hour: Why hasn’t Obama waived the Jones Act yet?
Jones Act expert Charlie Papavizas said the 2005 Katrina waiver, which lasted from Sept. 1 to Sept. 19, was used primarily to move cargo between ports, but it didn’t result in any new foreign ships in the region. “Twenty days is not enough time to reposition and do anything useful,” he said…
Sen. George LeMieux (R-Fla.) pressed the president on the Jones Act during a recent face-to-face meeting. LeMieux said the action would signal America’s allies that their help is wanted. Given the dire situation in the Gulf, what’s the harm?
Two other members from Florida, Reps. Corrine Brown (D) and John Mica (R), said their state is suffering while skimmers sit idle. At a hearing on Thursday, Brown held up photos of vessels in Mexico and Norway, asking, “What is the process for the state to take advantage of skimmers from other countries?”…
This, of course, is the primary criticism of the Obama administration’s handling of the spill. While the president says he “will not settle for inaction,” his failure to waive the Jones Act — even if for the sole purpose of sending a message to our allies — suggests he’s not doing everything he can.
Remember, this is a guy who wants us to get started on “clean energy” today, even though it could take decades to develop, because there’s no time like the present to begin work. And yet the Jones Act remains in effect almost 10 weeks after the rig blew, presumably because it’ll “take too long” to get skimmers in there. As for the theory that Obama’s keeping foreign ships out to protect American unions, see Bluey’s piece for a debunking of that.

Obama is a stubborn, arrogant ass. He has painted himself into a corner of complete incompetence and his arrogant pride will not allow him to do the right things at this late date because he fears being viewed as a pushover to criticism. So instead we get the continued nonsense of blaming everyone and everything else for his failings.
I am amazed more everyday by this mans short comings. Not only the worst policy wonk in my lifetime, but the worst leader and now the most self destructive.

Maybe the skimmers are needed in Mexico. Or in Tehran? The situation in these countries is of grave concern to our young, inexperienced, naive, fumbling, awkward, big-eared, stumbling, apologetic President. Perhaps he thought it best to send all skimmer boats to Iran? God knows they need all the help they can get, right, Barrak? Or else send all available resources to the Latinos who are
invadingcrossing our border every day.God forbid you actually help the Gulf situation. After all, we must remember the Unions! As for the trailer trash watching their lives go down the drain, perhaps after a period of “adjustment” they will see your point of view.

Allah says:
“As for the theory that Obama’s keeping foreign ships out to protect American unions, see Bluey’s piece for a debunking of that.”
From the article:
“Some critics have suggested that Obama is protecting the pocketbooks of his union allies by keeping foreign vessels at bay. But several Jones Act experts told me that makes little sense because unions have minimal influence in the Gulf.”
Unions may have minimal influence in the Gulf, but they have MAJOR influence with Obama. Don’t assume Obama knows or understands the ins and outs of the situation in the gulf. He hears the Jones act is in place to protect unions, so he keeps it in place.
So Allah, you have stated one man’s opinion as empirical fact which reveals mediocrity once again.

I am generally reluctant to ascribe failings to some great nefarious plot. I think that personal character is usually a much better guide to why people do what they do.
I have never viewed this man as intelligent. I never felt I could because the only thing he is good at is avoiding specifics and hiding his past. He is much more concerned with perception and has an undue grandiose opinion of himself. He won”t bend to criticisms because doing so could potentially damage his pride.
I think the real danger of this man is an inability to be critical of himself. And if one can not be critical of themselves they will never comprehend the truth in any criticisms leveled by others.

Obama wants these red states on the Gulf to die. And, he wants to kill offshore (and onshore) drilling as well. That’s his ideology.
In the meantime, he sends $2 billion to Brazil to help them drill an offshore well almost twice as deep as BP’s well, while claiming we’ve run out of “safe drilling places”.
Then again, last year Soros put almost a billion in Brazil’s nationalizIzed oil company, Petro-Bras, the same organization that’s getting $2 billion of our taxpayer money.
Connect the dots.
TXUS on June 21, 2010 at 11:08 PM
Obama claimed it was an all hands on deck situation. Clearly, this is not Obama’s goal.
Obama could have waived the Jones act for vessels involved in this oil cleanup effort FROM DAY ONE! This would have meant very little to any of the unions as there is clearly more work than they can handle.
Obama is totally INCOMPETANT in this entire matter.

For Obama, principles come before problems. He is programmatic in his response to domestic and foreign issues. The oil well crisis has become a greater disaster because of his deliberate policies and procedures.
He and his regents are ideological creatures who are focused on the “transformation” of America into their likeness, not on mitigating human and material tragedy.(Nashville anyone?)
All you need to do is compare the federal response to Katrina with Pres. Obama’s response to the well blow-out. Failure to lift the Jones’ Act is just one of the egregious failures of leadership.

White House mocks BP CEO’s yacht race, defends Obama golf
(AFP) – 15 hours ago
WASHINGTON — A White House spokesman mocked BP’s chief executive Monday for attending a luxury yacht race despite the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, but then defended President Barack Obama’s own weekend golf game.
Tony Hayward, the British energy giant’s embattled chief, drew fire from the White House over the weekend for having gone to the yacht race Saturday off the Isle of Wight.
White House spokesman Bill Burton took him to task again on Monday, suggesting that Hayward take part in the cleanup operations in the Gulf of Mexico with the 300,000 euro yacht he co-owns.
“You know, look, if Tony Hayward wants to put a skimmer on that yacht and bring it down to the Gulf, we’d be happy to have his help,” Burton said to laughter in the White House briefing room.
“But what’s important isn’t what Tony Hayward’s doing in his free time; it’s what BP is doing to take… responsibility for the mess that they’ve made,” he said.
His comments echoed those of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel who called Hawyard’s decision to go to the yacht race “part of a long line of PR gaffes and mistakes.”
But when asked about Obama’s day Saturday, in particular his four hour golf game at a course near Washington, Burton said the president had the right to decompress a bit after a hard week.
“I don’t think that there’s a person in this country that doesn’t think that their president ought to have a little time to clear his mind,” Burton said.
“I think that a little time to himself on Father’s Day weekend probably does us all good as American citizens,” he said.

Yes, to all the folks that habitually hop up and down about the jawdropping ‘incompetence’ apparently on daily display from this administration, it’s advisable to stop making the mistake the left fell into a trap about (e.g. Bush is stupid), and consider that their actions are not without purpose, just towards a really, really ugly and undesirable set of goals.
And that they’ve actually been pretty damned successful at it.
And at this point I’m not sure which is more disheartening, their successes, or the apparently large percentage of our fellow citizens that are avidly cheering them on.

In an interview with one of the handful of serious newspapers that every informed person should read, Brazil’s Foreign Minister Celso Amorim told the (paywall-protected) Financial Times that Brazil would no longer seek a lead role in the diplomatic dispute between Iran and the United States. “We got our fingers burned,” Amorim told the FT. The Daily News, an English-language Turkish newspaper published by the Hurriyet group, tried to cast doubt on the story, saying that there were ‘conflicting’ reports about the Brazilian position. As the smoke cleared this morning, however, both the AP and Reuters confirmed the FT account.
Brazil’s defection from the ‘axis of fixers‘ leaves Turkey in an uncomfortable place. Limited Israeli concessions on the Gaza blockade have won praise from both the US and Tony Blair without bringing the blockade, including the naval blockade, to an end. The Security Council sanctions against Iran sailed through despite Turkish opposition and, led by the US Treasury Department and the Congress, it is likely that in both the US and the EU new, tougher sanctions will build on what the Security Council laid down.
Killing two birds with one stone? Two billion seems to have stopped the support of Iran by Brazil.

Glenn Beck makes the excellent point that Brazilian national oil company Petrobras will be a beneficiary of Obama’s policies (and $2 billion in funds). Petrobras is the 2nd largest holding in George Soros’ portfolio at the moment.
One of Obama’s leading sources of advice is the Center for American Progress, which was founded by and is funded by George Soros. And of course Obama was looking for an excuse to push cap & trade, which would benefit Al Gore, GE and some of his Chicago cronies.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., recently blamed Bush appointees who “burrowed in” at the Minerals Management Service for the regulatory failures that led to the Deepwater Horizon disaster. But as it turns out, not one of the officials responsible for overseeing the exploded rig was a Bush political appointee.
The Washington Examiner has obtained biographic information on the MMS officials responsible for overseeing BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig at the time it exploded, from the Gulf Region Director to the last inspector to set foot on the rig. Most of these federal employees started with the agency decades ago. Not one was a presidential appointment of George W. Bush, although one longtime MMS employee in question was promoted to his current position during the Bush Administration.
Obama owns this one, and Pelosi can’t change that, not one iota.

I don’t think your avg American understands the true meaning of these 2 words.
In fact, if you talk about traitors, many people just laugh at the notion of such an archaic term having any merit in today’s enlightenend & modern societies.
And many other’s confuse impeachment with illegal activities & wrongdoing i.e. Clinton’s affair w/ Lewinski wasn’t illegal, so he shouldn’t have been impeached.

This is a normal news day with the Clueless One in charge. I keep waiting for the day when I wake up and don’t think I am in a nightmare in my own country.

Isn’t this (delays by Obama Admin) just a way to get the American people to really hate oil? It’s not in the far-away land of Alaska; the spill is in the Heartland. They are the ones that use the most oil and must be taught a lesson about how bad oil is.
I’d bet the environmental leftists are just enjoying this so much! They, like Obama, are using the crisis to make a point!

every distraction from the economy
10+% unemployment is a win win for Obama
1/3 of the public is totally blind to the fact that Obama is behind all the poor response time to cleanup
The feds have made BP out to be the criminals
and demonized the oil industry at the same time

Obama won’t settle for inaction – he demands it!
Never let a circus go to waste.
