Darrell Issa ready to send dozens of investigators after Dems if GOP retakes House

posted at 9:59 pm on June 18, 2010 by Allahpundit

On the one hand, one could argue that the GOP should use its return to power to push conservative policy ideas, not engage in divisive recriminations against the White House aimed at painting the Democrats as some sort of political mafia ahead of 2012.

On the other hand, what if they are a political mafia? What would Henry Waxman do?

Rep. Darrell Issa, the conservative firebrand whose specialty is lobbing corruption allegations at the Obama White House, is making plans to hire dozens of subpoena-wielding investigators if Republicans win the House this fall…

Issa has told Republican leadership that if he becomes chairman, he wants to roughly double his staff from 40 to between 70 and 80. And he is not subtle about what that means for President Barack Obama.

At a recent speech to Pennsylvania Republicans here, he boasted about what would happen if the GOP wins 39 seats, and he gets the power to subpoena.

“That will make all the difference in the world,” he told 400 applauding party members during a dinner at the chocolate-themed Hershey Lodge. “I won’t use it to have corporate America live in fear that we’re going to subpoena everything. I will use it to get the very information that today the White House is either shredding or not producing.”

Follow the link for quotes from anonymous Dems attempting to discredit Issa personally before he gets the gavel. Politico makes an excellent point: Since it’s unlikely that the GOP will retake the Senate, there won’t be much legislation originating in the House that ends up with Obama’s signature. Nothing to do for two years, in other words, except hold hearings. Which, of course, helps explain why Issa’s been so dogged in pursuing the Sestak scandal and why, in his own clumsy way, Joe Barton was eager to introduce the idea of an Oval Office “shakedown” of BP into the national debate. In order to counter the inevitable Democratic screeching about an Issa-led witch hunt if/when Republicans take back the House, the GOP first has to make sure the public understands that there really are witches out there worth hunting. I’m not sure that case has been made yet to the satisfaction of the general public, but it surely has on the right. Oh well — still six more months for new scandals to erupt before the new Congress is seated!

Incidentally, if you’re wondering what an Issa oversight hearing might sound like, Ace has got you covered.

Dream on. The leadership will be cowed to back off by the press calling them all sorts of names. Heck, the Senate Republicans had video of Clinton perjuring himself and they still let him off the hook. And premature talk of this sort just might turn off enough independent voters to let the Dems stay in control. You can definitely say that America doesn’t send the brightest to Congress.

The GOP aint taking back nothing in November.

Not with the $20B BP slush fund at the Dems’ disposal.

If Boehner had an ounce of smarts in that tanned head of his, he would have demanded every penny of the $20B be accounted for on a weekly basis. Instead, he had to slap Barton for pointing out the obvious.

Even if the GOP were to miraculously win an election, it wouldn’t matter. They’d be rushing to the left the second they were sworn in.

he gets the power to subpoena

A small but very necessary power. I’ve never seen so much breathtaking corruption on one side of the aisle in so short a time, akin to the same proportion Obama is outspending Bush.

John the Libertarian on June 18, 2010 at 10:35 PM

My post from the earlier thread…bringing over here because I strongly believe this is a stupid idea.

This isn’t good for the country. Besides, it’s not needed. Obama seems to be doing a good enough job falling on his face with no help from the Republicans.

When your enemy is destroying himself, get out of the way.

this will turn Obama into a sympathetic figure, a martyr of sorts.
JUST. LIKE. IT. DID. CLINTON.

Remember the whole impeachment trial was turned into an argument of “the mean republicans are trying to criminalize a personal issue between the President and his wife”. And it worked. He should have been thrown out of office for breaking the law, but he successfully argued that he was a victim of malicious attacks drummed by the republicans. Ken Starr was to the 90’s what Karl Rove was to the 2000’s.

The parties fare better when they convince the populous their ideas are better for the country. This is what the Democrats did to win back Congress in 2006 and this is what Obama did to win in 2008. The Republicans won Congress for the first time in over 40 years in 1994 by creating the “Contract With America”, which was a list of ideas that they sold to the public as being better than what the Democrats were doing. Independents will turn against Republicans if they see them as only interested in politics and not working on solutions to problems.

Besides, what the Democrats and media did to Bush was pay back for what the Republicans did to the Clintons.

This is a losing strategy for the Republicans. They need to focus on policy ideas and ways to move the country forward. Not trying to destroy the President. Besides, he seems to be doing a good job all on his own.

ramrants on June 18, 2010 at 10:35 PM

2 things, 1) even if they run the table and get the actual majority in the senate, they won’t have but 51 votes, which will get nothing passed. I’m fine with that, it’s a huge improvement on what’s currently going on. But they won’t pass anything, the Maine sisters will rediscover their inner love for the Dems the instant they are in the majority again.

It will never happen. Issa probably has the guts for it, but Boehner certainly does not. The Stooges will not allow anything like this to occur.

Bugler on June 18, 2010 at 10:02 PM

I’m not so sure about that. Issa’s majorly loaded, he & his brother invented the Viper car alarm system I think, he can probably do what he wants and the leadership will leave him alone. He probably throws lots of money to his colleagues like Queen Nancy did during her rise, so he’ll be able to do what he wants. It’s just his not terribly supportive views on Israel mean this is as far as he’ll rise.

You may think they are imaginary, but they selected Obama, and now they are finally turning their back on him.
They voted for a change, they are tired of the divisive bickering, they want solutions, not lawsuits.
Remember how Obama won, on “Change”, not being a Washington politician, but representing the people and all that garbage that the middle bought into.
And you are saying they are imaginary? Obviously you do not run political campaigns.
We have hard core dems, and hard core Republicans, about 50/50…then we have the “swing” votes, the “independents”, mostly people who can’t make up their mind because facts confuse them. They are swayed by emotions.
These people don’t want “lawsuits”, that is why Clinton was successful in pulling off his stunts, they made it endless lawsuits that turned off people.
No problem going after them, just no reason to make a big deal about it now, now that we have the momentum. Why give the dems this line: Democrats we have solutions, Republicans they have lawsuits…and emotionally, it will win over, “We gonna get em when we are in power”.
Strategy, and telling the enemy what your strategy is, is not smart in war, politics, sports, business…

right2bright on June 19, 2010 at 8:39 AM

bunch of contrived “scandals” like the Sestak one,

thuja on June 19, 2010 at 8:32 AM

You are why this strategy doesn’t work, you and other like you, can’t see a scandal, being bought off not to run is a fundamental scandal. But it is too obvious, or obscure, I am not sure which, for ordinary people, with ordinary intelligence to understand. Which is why it is tantamount for the dems to continue the horrible education of the population. So they won’t recognize the obvious.
It should be a “scandal” it should be so obvious that the politician step up immediately and get rid of him and the problem.
It’s the mentality of you not wanting to have politicians that hold each other accountable that is the real problem.
And that means you have to make some hard decisions, sometimes taking down your own party…like Palin did in Alaska.

right2bright on June 19, 2010 at 8:45 AM

Kissmygrits on June 19, 2010 at 9:04 AM

Republican turnout was depressed as was a large number of middle Americans who could not be bothered to show up. GOP get out the vote efforts sucks.

gdonovan on June 19, 2010 at 8:51 AM

Well then you and I disagree…you think that there isn’t a “swing/independent” vote that will decide the election…and I, and all the pollsters, GOP, DNC, and all the political pundits and analysts do…I think I will stick with what about 98% of the people who do this for a living think.

right2bright on June 19, 2010 at 9:15 AM

What part of 40% of votors staying home and not voting wasn’t clear? If that 40% (or even 20%) stepped up to the plate in ’08 chances are we would not be dealing with the marxist fool in the white house.

Sure there is a small “center” if you will but America is a conservative nation (this has been proven poll after poll) and if the GOP had another Reagan or perhaps Christie (please!) who could clearly define and explain why conservitisim is our path and always works… well it has always lead to victory.

Wrong- We defund programs that violate the feds mandate.
gdonovan on June 19, 2010 at 8:20 AM

There are a lot of programs I want to be defunded. For instance starve the EPA of any money. If possible abolish it. Go after NCLB. Defund ObamaScare.

When I say defund programs that we(conservatives… I know generalities and all) don’t like, I mean any useless big-government programs. Irrespective of whether the programs violate the feds mandate or not, we get rid of the nonsense.

If and when we get a majority in House and Senate, I would really like to see a law that limits the budgeting(money laundering) capabilities of the Congress. “Congress shall not spend more than x percent of the previous year’s GDP” or something like that. “Federal government shall not bailout the states” or something to that effect.

The problem is that thinking leads to lawful programs being attacked when were Republicans are out of office like now.

The “well you did it to us now were going to do it to you” rule if you will.

Just sticking to what is in the feds mandate will trim back 75% of spending, I’d call that a good start!

Strong states, weak Federal, time we enforced it.

This is pretty obvious but Star Jones, Star Parker. I guess they all look alike to democrats huh?

Vince on June 19, 2010 at 9:51 AM

We need the investigations of democrats so they will become compliant with efforts to repeal obamacare and every other executive order or program that has been enacted by these crooks.
I’m not saying we should blare the trumpets and announce this but may be a little whisper here or there “Thats a nice little office you’re holding. Want to keep it?”
First, let’s get the good guys in.

Vince on June 19, 2010 at 9:59 AM

Bring it on, Rep. Issa! I’ve been waiting for this for over two years. Is my orange jumpsuit fantasy going to come to fruition? I can only pray. And send money. I’d pay big for this!

BetseyRoss on June 19, 2010 at 10:01 AM

“Conservative FIREBRAND”——-code for someone that won’t kiss the bleep of the Left controlled Media.

From what I’ve seen so far he should be the Speaker of the House. Get rid of Boehner, Cantor and Pence……..and let’s get rid of the Media Whores in the GOP in the Senate too.

DOTUS must be stopped on all this legislation and regulation and we’ll need to be able to IMPEACH him in 2011 to save the Republic. Issa sounds like the kind of person to lead the charge.

PappyD61 on June 19, 2010 at 10:02 AM

Of course this assumes we even get to have FREE ELECTIONS in November!

PappyD61 on June 19, 2010 at 10:04 AM

So much of what liberal Dems of done with their power exceeds their Constitutional authority to such a degree that it is criminal IMO and I mean that in more than a metaphorical meaning.

Yakko77 on June 19, 2010 at 10:41 AM

Sounds great, but I’m not holding my breadth. We have to many Republican weanies in there to really take a stand. They posture, but they don’t stand for much these days. Stand aside gentlemen, and let the ladies show you how it’s done.

MainelyRight on June 19, 2010 at 10:52 AM

The Sestak scandal is neither a serious enough divergence from normal practice nor an evident enough violation of the law to justify chasing it down.

The EPA’s finding for carbon regulation on the basis of insufficiently-vetted (and, as it turns out, inaccurate) outside evidence (IPCC AR4 and related material) is, however, a prima facie violation of the law.

The Justice Department’s about-face on the New Black Panther Party voter-intimidation case appears to have very, very clear ethical problems.

The GOP needs to pursue only the obvious wrongs, not go on a snipe hunt.

Let’s remember, the GOP got an impeachment on Clinton but it was perceived (rightfully) in the public as a huge, divisive waste of effort over a relatively trivial matter; the GOP won the battle but lost the war. Someone needs to remember not to do that again.

Two Predictions of Unfortunate Events

I hate to be optomistic but The One and his minions will probably find another baker’s dozen things to screw up between now and November.

Unless something changes drastically, the Republicans have shown a predilection for finding the cesspools occupied by Democrats to be hot tubs for themselves after they find the seats availale.
