World poll: Views of U.S. improve — except in Muslim countries

posted at 10:15 pm on June 17, 2010 by Allahpundit

To be more specific, views of the U.S. improved almost everywhere, including Muslim countries, after Obama was elected, but after a year in office and in the wake of his big Cairo speech last summer, he’s actually down a bit in Dar al-Islam. What happened?

Among the seven countries surveyed with substantial Muslim populations, the U.S. was seen favorably by just 17 percent in Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan and 21 percent in Jordan. The U.S.’s positive rating was 52 percent in Lebanon, 59 percent in Indonesia and 81 percent in Nigeria, where Muslims comprise about half the population.

None of those figures was an improvement from last year. There were slight dips in Jordan and in Indonesia, where Obama spent several years growing up. Egypt saw a 10-point drop, even though Obama gave a widely promoted June 2009 speech in Cairo aimed at reaching out to the Muslim world.

In all seven of those countries, the percentage of Muslims expressing confidence in Obama has also dropped since last year. Only in Nigeria and Indonesia do majorities of Muslims voice confidence in him; in Obama’s worst showing, just 8 percent in Pakistan do.

Here’s the actual poll, which is wide-ranging enough to justify 10 minutes of skimming. First up, the overall global trend. The Russians and Chinese, in particular, appear to be warming to Obama. He certainly is more “agreeable” than mean old George Bush, which may explain their cooperation in passing Iran sanctions that are so weak, even Newsweek’s now calling them a charade.

The Muslim trend at a glance:

The Shia numbers in Lebanon are easily explained as a byproduct of the campaign against Iran’s nuclear program. As for the rest, I assume The One’s learning a hard lesson here that “outreach” in Cairo doesn’t mean much if you’re going to continue most of Bush’s policies. Presumably the Muslims in the region expected rapid drawdowns in Iraq and Afghanistan plus a whole lot more Israel-bashing than they’ve seen thus far. And indeed, check out the numbers on how he’s handling the Israeli/Palestinian situation:

The poll was taken before the flotilla raid so presumably the current data is even worse now. Again, you’re seeing the limits of “outreach” here as Obama’s policy preferences butt up against political reality: He’s not going to alienate congressional Democrats by abandoning Israel completely, the way Muslim leaders would like, so his approval on Palestine is stuck. He’s not going to abandon drone strikes in Pakistan because he can’t risk the political fallout of an attack being launched from that region if he stands down, so he’s stuck there too. He can’t pull out of Iraq or Afghanistan if he believes they’re not ready to handle security yet or else he’ll face recriminations at home and abroad for the chaos that follows, so he’s stuck yet again. Frankly, he’s probably doing as well in these countries as is politically possible under the circumstances. It’s just that our policy goals don’t meet their policy goals, and if that makes them unhappy, too bad.

Speaking of their policy goals, two more graphics to chew on. It speaks volumes about Islamic political culture that the trendlines here are positive and yet these numbers still are what they are.

The good news: The Turkish population is still pretty moderate, even if its leadership is decreasingly so. And Pakistanis are surprisingly cool to suicide bombing despite the country’s status as a beehive of jihad. I guess having Taliban bombers going off over there every few weeks will do that.

As I say, though, the whole poll’s worth skimming. The climate change data on page 9 is especially fun.

Whole nations of people with third grade educations have a low opinion of the US?

Who needs them?

A person is also known by the enemies they make.

Islam sucks, and if its adherents don’t like us, we must be doing something right.

You mean the Euros and the rest like us more the weaker we are? They like us more when we have an amateur at the helm? They like us when our leader goes around the world showing respect to every country EXCEPT his own? Gee cannot say I am surprised.

Remember many in muslim countries have little respect for those that don’t even stand with their own brothers.

I polled my family and we could give a flying fig what the “other” countries think of us. They will still come crying for aid at the drop of a hat. European contries like us better because we have a “Nancy Boy” in the WH.

The good news: The Turkish population is still pretty moderate, even if its leadership is decreasingly so.

A report released this week by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC) said new details have emerged which show how approximately 40 operatives from the Turkish Islamist IHH organization carefully prepared a violent ambush on navy commandos last week on board the Mavi Maramara ship, and acted with the full backing of the Turkish government.

The IHH operatives were armed with knives, axes and other weapons, communicated with one another using walkie talkies, set up a control room onboard the ship, and maintained close ties with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, the report said.

In addition, the Mavi Maramara ship was purchased by the IHH from a major shipping company owned by the Istanbul Municipality, which is run by the ruling AKP party, it has emerged.

In January, the IHH helped organize a convoy to Gaza which became stranded at El-Arish in the Sinai Peninsula after being denied entry into Gaza by Egypt, “Turkey enacted major pressure on Egypt to let the convoy into Gaza. The Egyptians eventually agreed,” Karmon added. An Egyptian soldier was killed during clashes between members of the convoy and the Egyptian security forces.

Last week, the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) released footage of statements made by Bulent Yildirim, head of IHH, in Gaza in February 2009.

During the speech, which was filled with references to “martyrdom,” Yildirim said, “All the peoples of the Islamic world would want a leader like [Turkish prime minister] Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

This merely means the rest of the world likes the U.S. weak, vacillating, and in bondage just as they are. The Muslims like us like that, too, but they will continue hating us until their objectives for being in the U.S. are realized: we are all raising our butts in the air with our heads on the ground and pointed towards Mecca.

So, to hell with them all.

SilentWatcher on June 18, 2010 at 2:32 AM

It’s interesting that the poll actually seeks information as to how people think the US is handling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but never bothers to find out what the opinion of the Israelis might happen to be. We’re curious as to what Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon think, but not what Israel thinks?

morganfrost on June 18, 2010 at 5:37 AM

Will there be a followup 2010 poll to see if the U.S.’s favorability rating with the International Olympic Committee has improved?

Thank God the country is finally waking up to the fact that Barack Obama cannot make things all better through the sheer power of his oratory (such as it is). Corzine: Fail! Massachusetts Senate race: Fail! Olympic bid: Fail! Oil spill: Fail! Muslim world: Fail!

I look forward to the day this self-important American Idol president is sent packing and takes up residence in a foreign land (with golf courses) that loves him so much.

Democrats hated Bush SUPPOSEDLY for not aligning with our allies.

Yet, Democrats via Obama destroy all US alliances.

Democrats are traitors to allies and constituents.

“World Poll”

Obama got Egypt’s and Libyan Gaddafi’s monumentally huge contributions and shoo-in to office BECAUSE they recognized Obama to be a black Muslim of Marxist heritage. Obama promised to pull the US out of the Middle East. Obama lied. Of course Islam would turn their ire upon the heretic Obama. They gave him a break, and he proved himself a traitor to them. At this point, what Ahmadinejad says of Obama expresses the general Middle Eastern Muslim’s take, disgust.

That Eurosocialists “like” Obama more than Bush is no surprise.

If the general body of those Europeans want to keep “liking” Obama until Obama specifically attacks their national interests, there is no surprise. That European nations, despite the EU, fail to rile when their neighbors suffer due to Obama’s agenda, is nothing new. EU or not, they each do have their own inherent nationalist sets of prejudices against their own members.

But Obama is no friend to any European interest, and made that perfectly clear AFTER HIS CAMPAIGN from the beginning of his administration. Poland. Georgia. Britain. Europe gets the short end of the stick while Obama attempts to flirt with Russia, China, (and Marxist S.American dictatorships,) and even turn a blind eye to N.Korea.

Gates’ “warning” this week v. Russia “hating American missiles” is mere show in the give and take of perverted “reset” politics. Putin’s boast that the new Russian aircraft exceeds the “cheaper NATO cooperative” US model is very credible. So it’s time to pull out the bluster, and Gates plays his role, lest we forget it was Gates who participated in the dismantling of our untouchable Air Force already produced and in use.

Interesting results. What I found most interesting was the poll on ‘Suicide Bombing often/somewhat justified’. I can be a wise ass and say that that less and less people approve of it because they’re killing themselves and bringing the numbers down, but really, it seems that our offensives in Iraq and Afghanistan have indeed not created more terrorists but rather have discourged them (not a surprise to anyone here, but still.)

I’m thinking this has as much to do with the failure to produce actionable results, but in Iraq especially with the terrorists detonating bombs in groups of children and markets I think soured a lot of “common” people to the idea.

Heralder on June 18, 2010 at 8:55 AM
