Hillary: Obama will sue Arizona over immigration-enforcement law

posted at 11:36 am on June 17, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The Right Scoop picks up this unusually concrete statement from the Obama administration on their response to Arizona’s new immigration-enforcement law. Up to now, the White House, including Barack Obama himself, has remained noncommittal about taking legal action against Arizona while continuing to criticize the bill publicly.  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton removes the ambiguity and declares that the Justice Department will sue over the bill in an interview with an Ecuador media outlet:

QUESTION: Thank you very much.

I would like to start with the immigration debate in the United States. The recently approved law in Arizona has presented sort of a difficult scenario for the President Obama Administration. According to some polling, half of the United States has approved this law and maybe other states would like to implement it. How’s Obama Administration dealing with this debate? Is the immigration law near reality?

SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, Andrea, first, let me say how pleased I am that I have this chance to talk to you about these and other important issues. President Obama has spoken out against the law because he thinks that the federal government should be determining immigration policy. And the Justice Department, under his direction, will be bringing a lawsuit against the act.

But the more important commitment that President Obama has made is to try to introduce and pass comprehensive immigration reform. That is what we need. Everyone knows it, and the President is committed to doing it.

This may not surprise most people, given the Obama administration’s rhetorical attacks on the bill.  However, those have slacked off recently as the Gulf oil spill finally began to get more of their attention than a law-enforcement measure in Arizona.  The Deepwater Horizon disaster may not be the only reason for the White House distance from the controversy, either.  The same Washington Post/ABC poll with the distorted sample noted last week shows solid support for the Arizona law, the Post reports today:

Most Americans support the new, controversial Arizona law that gives police there the power to check the residency status of suspected illegal immigrants. But most also still back a program giving those here illegally the right to earn legal documentation, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The article doesn’t mention the topline result for this question, which is 58/41 in support for the law.  Given that level of support in a sample skewed by an eight-point advantage for Democrats, a lawsuit against Arizona would likely be tremendously unpopular.  In fact, those numbers resemble the ratings for repealing ObamaCare, another deeply unpopular program that Democrats will carry as baggage into the midterms.

Will the White House confirm Hillary’s remarks?  I have a request into the White House on that score, and I’ll post whatever response I get.

To the best of my knowledge, the Arizona law doesn’t affect US immigration policy one iota. It merely enforces it.

Farmer_Joe on June 17, 2010 at 12:41 PM

That is the issue. Can the feds make a legitimate legal argument that that have a right to not enforce laws on the books? I know the Black Panthers case tends to demonstrate that argument.

This admin. will do anything it can to take down a state that isn’t Dem. controlled,Arizona,Louisiana,Tennessee(never heard hardly a peep about their devastating floods).

These States are trying to help their own and are meeting roadblocks at every turn, I like Jindal saying they are going to do it themselves(Then they should hold that amount of money they send to Washington in taxes).

Arizona should do the same BUILD THE DAMMED WALL OURSELVES and bill Washington.

President Obama has spoken out against the law because he thinks that the federal government should be determining immigration policy.

Ah,Hillary, but there are two magic little words you uttered there that is actually the heart of the matter: SHOULD BE.

Because if there is one thing the Obama Administration, namely YOUR administration, is NOT DOING, it is determining anything that even comes close to any kind of an immigration policy.

If anything, Obama has done a magnificient, almost bordering on majestic, job of TOTALLY IGNORING the situation.

Which is why the people of Arizona, in effect, said SCREW YOU to Obama and did the job HE is suppose to be doing themselves.

So if and when Obama has the guts to take any action against Arizona, keep in mind, Hill, this all came about because of your boss’s total unwillingness to want to do anything about the situation.

Oh, one more bit of advice you may want to consider, Hill. If and when you do decide to run for President in 2012, don’t even bother even thinking about campaigning in Arizona. Because something tells me you will get anything but a warm welcome if you so much as even step into the state.

Two questions:

1. If Hillary were trying to position herself to take on Obama for her party’s 2012 nomination, wouldn’t she be a bit more cagey than this, given public support for Arizona?

2. What on earth is going on with her hair?

Watching the Border stuff on TV the last many days, I have concluded the following: ITS WAR.

When 2 groups of Mexican drug runners enfilade fire on 1 sheriff with the whole goal to kill him, at that point local law enforcement is in over their heads. One of these gangs is the former Mexican Special Forces.

They either need to form posses or call out the National Guard. Either is likely to simply touch off US Civil War part 2. Just in time for Nov.

I support AZ and a secure Border. F*&k Mexico. FUBO.

I don;t know why all the uproar over this law. Back in 1981, LT Howard Hunter in Hill Street Blues was always having somebodies immigration status checked. I was really shocked to find out that in many locales this is one law that most police don’t care to enforce or rather not have to enforce.

JohnnyL on June 17, 2010 at 2:43 PM

The answer is just Hillary talking out her … ahem…, which is about the level of thought and care we have come to expect from all members of this administration. I don’t think she revealed anything here other than her own uninformed opinion.

But I gotta say, the Hill-man looks fabulous! Her skin is smoother and tighter than the young Equadorean info-babe’s! She must be using some really good nutritional supplements and skin-care products.

Actually when you think about it, this is probably a great precedent they’re setting. The Federal Government is giving the go-ahead to pick and choose which laws you care to comply with. And silly me … I thought it was up to the legislative branch (congress) to determine what the laws of the land are, with the judiciary ensuring that laws were in compliance with the constitution. Illegal aliens thumb their noses at Federal immigration laws that have been on the books for half a century and get molly-coddled by the Holder Justice Department. But just who in the hell in this administration is going to come to my defense when I thumb my nose at the IRS and refuse to pay my taxes (also a Federal law)?

bannedbyhuffpo on June 17, 2010 at 3:07 PM

Illegals are liars, cheaters, and thieves:period. They steal identity, they lie about their status, and they cheat the taxpayers of the United States. No way should they have a greased ride to citizenship. They should be sent home and put at the back of the line for legal citizenship.

Businesses that hire them should be punished, and all government services provided citizens should be denied to them. Lieing, cheating, and stealing should in no way be rewarded.

Well, just when I think they can’t look any more stupid, they up the ante.

HAnthonyWayne on June 17, 2010 at 3:38 PM

The next lawsuit?

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says the state is not waiting for federal approval to begin building sand barriers to protect the coastline from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

you can’t take the Federal Government’s responsibility even if they’re not doing it, and they’ll sue you if you try, right?

So sue Jindal for trying to stop the oil from damaging the coastline… it’s at least as intelligent as this lawsuit.

Second, shame on her to even take the notion that our citizens should have less rights to safety and security over those that illegally invade our country and kill our citizens.

We all need to stand tall and stop the stripping of our protection from those that invade and create harm to our country and those that legally have the right to defend.

When the government ignores the people, there will be trouble. The government has been ignoring the people an awful lot lately. The people made it very clear that we don’t want nationalized health care, but they ignored us. They already know we don’t want Cap and Trade, so they’re planning to ram it through after the election no matter how much it costs them.

Fortunately, the next couple of elections should settle things down. But if the new members of Congress in 2010 don’t repeal Obamacare, we may get a whole new crop in 2012, too.
