Rush: Let me tell you about my new friend, Elton John

posted at 4:11 pm on June 15, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via the Right Scoop, he’s back from the honeymoon and ready to kibitz about the world’s highest-paid wedding singer. Don’t be daunted by the length; it’s sweet all the way through and funny in parts, especially at around 3:45 when he talks about trying to convince Elton to play the wedding by singing his songs on a hotel balcony in Hawaii (as luck would have it, EJ was staying in the room directly above Rush’s). His description of the wedding starts at 12:10 but the most interesting bit comes at 8:40 when he talks about meeting Elton backstage at an AmEx concert with his wife and hitting it off, replete with hugs and an invitation to dinner the next time the couple’s in London. Can you feel the love tonight?

The fact that the conservative elite welcomed an openly gay entertainer won’t change the “right hates gays” Narrative, which is impervious to contrary facts, but let it be noted for the record. Is it worth noting this, too?

Update: Elton’s side of things via his partner, David Furnish:

Furnish was in Europe and couldn’t attend the wedding. But John told him it was a beautiful event and Limbaugh and his bride “were incredibly gracious and very welcoming and very sweet and very appreciative.”…

By all accounts, John and the couple got along well. “I wasn’t there, but from everything Elton told me, he said Rush and his bride were incredibly charming and welcoming. And they have said they want to come and have dinner with us in England, if they pass through in their travels.”

Blowback

Sir Elton is right. This is how you win people over.

RobCon on June 15, 2010 at 4:16 PM

Elton said recently that Jesus of Nazareth was “gay.” So, hiring him to clean my birdcage would be a misuse of funds.

Akzed on June 15, 2010 at 4:17 PM

As silly and uninteresting it sounds on the surface, Arianna and Olbermann and Alter could not be more furious that Elton humanizes Rush. So this is newsworthy.

Marcus on June 15, 2010 at 4:17 PM

I’ll see your Sir Paul and raise you a Sir Elton.
Take that!

RobCon on June 15, 2010 at 4:18 PM

I’m sure that like liberal New York rabbi David Nesenoff, who discovered certain, er, limits on the tolerance of his fellow liberals after he posted the Helen Thomas video, Elton’s learned a few things about some of his liberal fans (now ex-fans) and probably some other liberals in the entertainment industry after playing at Rush’s wedding.

I’ll bet Elton didn’t make childish and rude comments about the previous president, either.

Personally, I was embarassed for him and his massive ego. Not to mention the destruction of “family values.”

No one can ever put things into perspective and even say it as well as Rush, but I have to stop there. I shifted to Laura Ingraham, trying to shut off the absurd braggadoccio. He’s not my role model -that’s for certain.

Heard the show. Loved the first hour. I wish nothing but happiness and more for the newlyweds, and kudos to Sir Elton for making their weekend that much more memorable.

No hate here for any of the parties, but lots of pity for the Far Left who can’t stand the bridge building.

itzWicks on June 15, 2010 at 4:32 PM

I loved Rush’s point in that whole story….his minister was a black man and he had a gay man entertain the party. But Rush, and all conservatives, are still racists and homophobes.

search4truth on June 15, 2010 at 4:33 PM

I still don’t know why this would be a big deal to most conservatives. It was definitely a surprise to hear about Elton John playing at Rush’s wedding, but I really don’t give a crap what someone does in his or her personal life(provided it’s legal of course).

Now libs on the other hand, I’m not shocked at all to hear them going crazy over this. I don’t even think it’s because they feel Elton John betrayed the left. I think it’s because they realize this shoots a whole bunch of holes in the narrative about Rush(and conservatives in general) being bigots and homophobes.

Destroying the favorite leftist mantras bit by bit is great.

Rush really is a cuddly mush ball. He’s very human, decent and ordinary. That’s why millions of us love him. He’s rich, but in the end, he’s like most of us, and he understands this.

The only reason the myths continue is because of liberals and the media masters who have perpetuated their fantasies and political agenda for decades.

It’s time to tear down this particular wall.

The story about everyone trying to guess the musical guest is funny. We did the same thing here in Milwaukee in the weeks before the Harley Davidson 100 Year Anniversary bash. Elton John was guessed but no one ever thought HD would get EJ to play for 500000 hard partying bikers. We were quite surprised for sure. Elton John was great, as he always is live. But the crowd just wasn’t that into it. :)

Jerome Horwitz on June 15, 2010 at 4:50 PM

“Gracious” is the operative word here, and that is exactly how conservatives should behave towards liberals for the remainder of the election season. It’s biblical: “19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[a]says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[b] 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Let the libs rage against the machine and commit reprehensible acts of violence while we remain gracious, and in so doing, heap burning coals upon them. Calmly, relentlessly disseminate the conservative message, but with style and grace. Then, sit back and watch the libs self destruct.

We have an incredible blessing in the form of candidates such as Sharron Angle and Allen West, conservatives who are unwavering and vocal about their commitment to (much) smaller government. The message needs to be honed to perfection for these and other like-minded candidates to succeed, and that success includes gracious and civil behavior (the kind Mr. Etheridge purports to encourage).

Who the Hell is? I’m twice married, twice divorced… so I’m half as moral as you? Half as good? Who sets these standards? You. If you’re going get ‘moral’ then don’t forget this bit of wisdom:

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Mk. 4.24
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
6 ¶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

You keep a score card on such things…how about this, they both won, had a good time.
Both showed that there is something more important then politics…it is okay to have different views, but not okay to be vindictive for those views.
Let’s hope the liberals learn something from Sir Elton John.

right2bright on June 15, 2010 at 4:54 PM

Here’s the deal. Are liberals or conversatives more likely to put fire breathing aside to celebrate a wedding, even when the wedding singer is openly gay, the groom is openly Atilla the Hun, and the preacher is openly very anti-gay. The answer: both…apparently…but you’ve got to be there eye-ball to eye-ball. Heck, I’d probably get EJ’s autograph if possible although I’m an Atilla the Hun acolyte. It’s something about understanding the other guy’s a human being too. This doesn’t make all right, but it does give peace a chance.

Jesus judged, God judges, it is called discernment, we make decisions on who we follow or choose for leaders based on our judgment of their actions.

I am not a racist on June 15, 2010 at 5:02 PM

Elton John and Rush Limbaugh are both class acts. The fact that liberals were shocked by Limbaugh’s willingness to have an openly gay performer at his wedding, and at least a little annoyed that Elton would agree to the gig, speaks volumes about the party of “tolerance”.

To the Left, tolerance means everybody being put into the correct cubbyhole, and then acting as that group is supposed to act. This concept that people aren’t groups eludes them.

You think so too? I thought I had a better reputation than that. The only reason I wrote what I did was because someone mentioned family values, as though Rush jumped that shark by having Elton there, despite the fact that this is his fourth wedding. If you’re going to hammer Rush on this issue, I don’t see why inviting a gay to sing is worse than divorcing three times.

Rush has never claimed to be a moral leader, and he’s not one. That’s not a judgment call. It’s just a fact, one I don’t even see him arguing against.

I believe you misunderstood what I said. There are conservatives who do not like gay people and see them as deviant/sick/sinner. These beliefs are mainly borne from not actually knowing any gay people or the only thing they know about them is what they see on TV, such as gay pride parade’s and burning bibles, etc. Those images just reinforce the opinion some have of gay people.

By having the Rush, whom many people respect, speak positively about a gay person helps to soften people’s harden opinion of them. As people become more accepting of gays, they are more open to the rights of gays.

That is what I meant by saying Elton playing at Rush’s wedding does more to advance gays and gay rights in the eyes of conservatives.

The more Republicans reach out, the more the dynamic will shift from 50/50 to Republican supermajority. By sticking to taxes, spending, debt, and limited government, the country will become divided into taxpayers (Republicans)and beneficiaries (Democrats: welfare queens and kings, and government workers). The taxpayers will win.

Rush wasn’t embracing the “gay agenda”, he was embracing a person, a man, an artist, a human being.
People can have differing opinions, and still respect each other…at least mature people can.
It’s the liberals, and the mis-guided religious that have a problem.
Everyone else thinks it’s cool…

right2bright on June 15, 2010 at 5:36 PM

Elton said recently that Jesus of Nazareth was “gay.” So, hiring him to clean my birdcage would be a misuse of funds.

Akzed on June 15, 2010 at 4:17 PM

I agree….I am disappointed in Rush….Not that he cares….

theaddora on June 15, 2010 at 5:39 PM

Personally, I was embarassed for him and his massive ego. Not to mention the destruction of “family values.”

No one can ever put things into perspective and even say it as well as Rush, but I have to stop there. I shifted to Laura Ingraham, trying to shut off the absurd braggadoccio. He’s not my role model -that’s for certain.

Don L on June 15, 2010 at 4:19 PM

Just because someone is gay and liberal does not mean they should not be hired to sing at a Conservative wedding. Most entertainers are Libs, so ones choice is limited when sticking with Conservatives. It’s not personal, it’s business. I guess next time we hire a painter or plumber we should make sure he is not liberal or gay? Seeing as I live in a mostly Democrat area, that will be pretty difficult. How petty it is for the Libs to criticize Elton John over this, and how petty it is of you to also act this way. Whatever your political leaning, you are showing how closed minded you are, and that you are just as bad as the Libs screaming on the other side!

Susanboo on June 15, 2010 at 5:39 PM

Congratulations, Rush! Best wishes to you and Kathryn for a lifetime of happiness. I ditto Weight of Glory’s sentiments. Your joy in recounting the events leading up to and including the day of your marriage is palpable.

Woo hoo! LaMont in Pittsburgh is a wonderfully romantic venue to pop the question.

onlineanalyst on June 15, 2010 at 5:39 PM

As people become more accepting of gays, they are more open to the rights of gays.

That is what I meant by saying Elton playing at Rush’s wedding does more to advance gays and gay rights in the eyes of conservatives.

ramrants on June 15, 2010 at 5:28 PM

“People,” and by that I mean conservatives, are already accepting of gays.
And gays already enjoy the same rights the rest of us do.

Changing public policy to allow same sex marriage is nothing but gay political activism and as such, is opposed by conservatives who want to preserve traditional marriage and the family.
It has nothing to do with “accepting gays.”

Jenfidel on June 15, 2010 at 5:42 PM

I think it’s funny that this is even news. At least I, and others on here, can relate to what Elton is going through with the, er, open-minded Left.

SouthernGent on June 15, 2010 at 5:43 PM

Congrats to the next Mrs. X Limbaugh. Love seeing the bible bangers on here suddenly quoting scripture to excuse the further dilution of the institution of marriage. But I am sure you would defend Billy Clinton with similar zeal. Right?

It is amazing how full of sh1t people are these days.

ClassicCon on June 15, 2010 at 5:26 PM

So you’re comparing an accused rapist and perjurer to a guy who’s left bad marriages rather than staying in them and cheating with everyone woman in the room, whether she wants to or not?

You appear to be referring to yourself.

MadisonConservative on June 15, 2010 at 5:44 PM

As EJ said at the wedding, he’d rather build bridges than walls. That’s enough for me. Sounds like a class act.

Personally, however, if a bridge needs to be built between a celeb lib and me, I would prefer as its builder, say, Scarlett Johansson, if you get my drift.

TXUS on June 15, 2010 at 5:44 PM

Elton John > Billy Joel.

Good Lt on June 15, 2010 at 5:46 PM

Of course not. Heaven can’t be earned.

I mentioned his multiple marriages because “family values” was the complaint I was responding to in that post.

Esthier on June 15, 2010 at 4:48 PM

So Heaven can be inherited?

Heaven MUST be earned. lol

There’s no other way to get there. :-)

David2.0 on June 15, 2010 at 5:47 PM

When Reagan would say, “Hate the Sin, Love the Sinner” all the snooty liberals would proclaim “What a crazy old coot!” So when Rush treats someone the way he would want to be treated, their paradigms just can’t handle it.

olesparkie on June 15, 2010 at 5:48 PM

Many have said it is easier to be a gay among conservatives than a conservative among gays. Sir John is now learning that the hard way.

AaronGuzman on June 15, 2010 at 5:49 PM

Anyway, does anyone have a picture of Kathryn anywhere? Rush was saying people were saying she looks like Grace Kelly. I wanted to see for myself.

NoLeftTurn on June 15, 2010 at 4:34 PM

Haven’t seen a picture of her in her wedding dress, but from what I HAVE seen, she is absolutely stunning.

uncivilized on June 15, 2010 at 5:50 PM

Opposing the disagreeable parts of the “gay agenda” does not mean that conservatives do or should dislike, spurn or reject people who happen to be gay. As Dick Cheney has learned, when the issue becomes one of family, things do change a bit – I know that they did for me when a member of my immediate family came out of the closet. That said, I do oppose gay marriage (no problem with civil unions – I’m just like BHO and to the right of Dick Cheney!), but am happy to debate it in a civil manner with anyone who wants to.

I also think that if the Texas legislature had a brain between them, they would have changed their law and mooted Lawrence before it was decided by the USSC, thereby preventing a decision that was fair policy but terrible constitutional law.
