Pelosi offers Democratic example of frugality and responsibility

posted at 11:36 am on June 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Otherwise known as Because They’re Better Than Us, example #6548.  Roll Call reports on Nancy Pelosi’s decision last year to move her San Francisco district offices to a new building, supposedly because she needs more security as Speaker of the House.  However, something doesn’t add up, because she had been Speaker for almost three years at the time of the move — and her new offices will cost four times as much as her old suite:

Last fall, Speaker Nancy Pelosi moved her district office into the new federal building in San Francisco. The move quadrupled the rent she pays, and her new $18,736 monthly bill is almost double the next-highest rental paid by a Member of the House.

A database assembled by the Sunlight Foundation in cooperation with Roll Call provides new insight into Congressional spending on district office rents. Not surprisingly, Members from large urban districts with the highest property values are paying the most for district office rental, particularly New York–area Members. …

The next highest monthly office rent belongs to Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D), who occupies an office in a federal building in Manhattan’s trendy SoHo neighborhood for just under $10,600. Rep. José Serrano (D) paid $10,350 a month last year for an office in the Bronx, but he recently moved into a new building where the first month’s rent was only $9,583, his spokesman said Friday.

Why did Pelosi make the move to new digs at all?  She had been in her original offices for almost 20 years, and her spokesperson claimed to Roll Call that she needed more space as Speaker of the House.  Perhaps, but at four times the previous rent?  San Francisco commercial space costs money, but it doesn’t usually run twice as expensive as Manhattan.

Actually, all she got was a one-third increase in floor space.  Pelosi accepted a 300% increase in rent for 33% more space.  That certainly fits with a Democratic Congress that has increased annual federal spending by 33% in three years while providing worse service and running up massive amounts of debt.

Her office also claims that the new building will save on energy costs.  In other words, because of the building’s “green” profile, it will use about half the amount of energy as the old building.  So taxpayers will pay four times as  much in rent in order to save half off the electrical bill.  That also sounds like the kind of economics that Democrats have used since assuming power in 2007.

Finally, Pelosi says she needs the additional security the building provides as Speaker.  That didn’t seem to be a problem in 2007, 2008, or the first half of 2009, when Pelosi was Speaker without any incidents at her old location.  Nor does it explain whether the roughly $14,000 a month extra would needed to have been spent if they had simply upgraded the security at the old location.  We should ask, however, if Pelosi plans to vacate that building when she stops being Speaker and the extra security becomes unnecessary — which could happen as early as January.

Update: Had to adjust my math to the terms.  Since I wrote the figures as an increase, that makes it a 300% increase, not 400%.  The new figure is 400% of the old rent, which makes it a 300% increase.  Also, the same applies to the space.  It’s 133% of her old space, but a 33% increase, as is the rise in annual federal spending. I’ve adjusted the above accordingly.  Thanks to commenter theperfecteconomist for the heads-up.

But she deserves it because she’s smart enough to understand that they need to pass legislation so that we can find out what’s in it.

Who pays for the offices?

Is she wasting her own money (in which case, more power to her)? Is it covered by her district (which deserves it for being dumb enough to elect her)? Does the state pay? Or is it Federal money?

If it is Federal money, do all congressmen get the same amount and they just get to pocket whatever is leftover? Do they pick their offices and (whatever the price) the cost is covered? Or, is the amount set based on where their district is located?

Along with her jets…

But that single receipt makes up just part of the more than $101,000 taxpayers paid for “in-flight services” – including food and liquor, for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trips on Air Force jets over the last two years. That’s almost $1,000 per week.

Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by Judicial Watch, which investigates and prosecutes government corruption, show that the Pelosi incurred expenses of some $2.1 million for her use of Air Force jets for travel over that time.

MNHawk on June 14, 2010 at 11:40 AM

The Federal gov owns You and I own it, but it’s not been without controversy.

It was designed by Thom Mayne|Morphosis as a ‘green building’ with some rather unusual quirks which show some real ivory-tower disregard for the people who actually have to live 1/3 of their life in that building.

Imagine a structure designed by Mike Bloomberg and Al Gore with their “Do as I say not as I do” health & environmental dictates built right into the structure.

There’s no AC or heat, so to get comfortable the high rise office workers have to open windows which sends papers & desk clutter flying, especially at the upper floors, obviously.

Also the elevators don’t stop at every floor in an effort to promote force fed employees to mind their health & take the stairs, although some have been getting around this by getting their physicians to declare them disabled. If Nancy tries to weasel out of it on the rare occasions she’ll be there too, somebody should expose her for her dishonesty. Mental disabilities such as the type with which she is afflicted should not get her a pass from enduring the enforced physical exertion imposed by this building upon its occupants.

Really, Morphosis should be paying Nancy to condemn her district office workers to this arrogantly misguided boondoggle. There’s more about the building here:

Typical Nancy. Can’t negotiate and economize to save her life. Apparently neither she or her staff spend enough time in SF. Having been in downtown SF a million times, you’d have to be blind not to see all the prime space that available for a good price. “The 13 million square feet of available space in the first quarter of 2010 translates to a 17.7 percent office vacancy rate…”

Pelosi’s new offices will be at the Federal Building on 7th street.

The building is on the site of the old Greyhound bus station, and played host to bums, junkies, chickenhawks, and whores. It was demo’d by the city for redevelopment. For 25 years, it was a big hole, which quickly became a garbage dump and open toilet. Then Feinstein and Boxer got the Fed’s to buy the lot and build federal offices on it. It’s still surrounded by skid row and not a nice place at night.

The building itself is a joke.

It suppose to be a “green building” and was designed to use only 1/2 the energy of a normal building

To cut down on the use of air conditioning, it uses a system of open windows and air flow. The problem is that if you open the windows, wind currents up to 35mph are created. This blows everything all over the place; paper, cups, trash cans, etc. Even when the windows are open, people near the windows freeze and people further away don’t get cool. The only solution is to keep the windows closed so everyone roasts.

In order to cut down on heating the building was designed to resemble a green house, so there’s no curtains. Workers have to bring in umbrellas and jury rig awnings to get some shade.

Also to encourage workers to exercise and “interact”, almost all the elevators only stop on every third floor. Which forces you to walk up or down a flight of stairs to get to the floor you want. The remaining elevators that stop on every floor are jammed with people and always have a line.
