Happy Flag Day!

posted at 12:55 pm on June 14, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Did you remember to fly your flag today? It’s Flag Day, and at the same time, it’s also the 235th birthday of the US Army. Both occasions require commemoration, but these days it seems as though Americans don’t fly the flag at their homes nearly as often as in years past. I took a quick look this morning when I put my flag in its holder, and another one as I wrote this post. We’re getting drizzle on and off, but even without that, I don’t usually see too many flags on holidays here, and none at all today.

I have two videos to post. The first is a clip from last year’s commemoration by Fox News, which is interesting for its look at history and the preparation Fox put into producing this segment. The second is a salute to the Army on their birthday from Soldiers Media Center, which is well worth the five minutes it takes to watch it. My father served in the Army in the Korean War as a combat soldier, so let me just say thanks to the Admiral Emeritus for defending this nation and being part of a 235-year tradition of securing liberty and freedom for us all.

Sad to say but even out here in Bachmann country there are few flags flying on the houses. I see more Wild or Vikings flags than U.S.

If anyone, then, asks me the meaning of our flag, I say to him – it means just what Concord and Lexington meant; what Bunker Hill meant; which was, in short, the rising up of a valiant young people against an old tyranny to establish the most momentous doctrine that the world had ever known – the right of men to their own selves and to their liberties. ~Henry Ward Beecher

Everyone type in google “Happy Flag Day” and see what comes up first.

When I was precinct-walking for Rep. Dana Rohrabacher in fall 2008, we had a list of Republican homes to visit and deliver literature for. Within a half hour I figured out that every home with a flag displayed was on our list, and every home on our list had a flag displayed.

I realized that if we saw a flag that wasn’t on the list, we ought to visit them anyway and in every case, got a warm reception for our Republican candidate literature.

Put my flag outside this morning when I left for work.
Thank God for the Army.

Flag Day 1991: The day I found out my wife was pregnant with our first child. I know, I should be thinking something more patriotic.

vcferlita on June 14, 2010 at 1:02 PM

We fly our flag 24/7 at our home. Two homes in our block do the same.
To all men and women who have and do now serve in the Army, Happy Birthday and thank you from the bottom of my heart for defending our Republic.

My flags are waving proudly today.

Question.

When Hussein Obama speaks tomorrow night will we see any US Flags behind him, or will he continue to use that yellow silk curtain backdrop that looks like it was bought in Mecca?

Thanks, Ed, for posting this. We are going to an Army birthday celebration this evening.

The Soldier

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag,
who serves under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

By Father Dennis Edward O’Brien, USMC

As the proud son of a Master Sargeant who landed on Normandy with an engineering unit so long ago, may I say God Bless the Army and our American flag. If it offends you…leave.

Microsoft has a history of lying, cheating, stealing and bullying to get to the top and stay there. In fact, there are parallels between MS and the Obama admin.

But I’m still going to use Bing more now. Google seems to enjoy rejecting opportunities to support America.

Thanks for the tip

I’ve seen that originial Star Spangled Banner at the Museum of American History in DC earlier this year. It is an incredibly moving display and I am glad that they have it up for viewing.

Every day is Flag Day at this Veteran’s home and Old Glory flies freely in the wind as a constant reminder of everything this country and I stand for.

GoldenEagle4444 on June 14, 2010 at 1:25 PM

It is also a birthday in this house.
We will never forget Flag Day. It means alot to us.

ORconservative on June 14, 2010 at 1:25 PM

Our flag flies every day. On holidays like today, I line the front lawn with smaller flags at the sidewalk and up our walk. 37 flags in all.

IrishEi on June 14, 2010 at 1:28 PM

You’re a grand old flag,
You’re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You’re the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev’ry heart beats true
‘neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there’s never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Put up my flag in the early dawn this morning, and counted 11 flags as I left around 7:00 to haul my gals off to Girl Scout Summer Camp.

I’m trying to determine how I can install a flag pole in the front yard…..

juanito on June 14, 2010 at 1:30 PM

My buddy’s Grandpa (Par) is the most patriotic man I know. 83 years old and every morning he runs the flag up the pole at 5 a.m. and dutifully takes it down at 2 when he goes to bed.

Daveyardbird on June 14, 2010 at 1:34 PM

My flag went out when the sun came up. I am also honoring my mom, a WWII WAVE, who passed this spring. She never missed a flag holiday.

I have our flag out here in the People’s Republic of Triple J-though most of my government teat-suck neighbors won’t.

Flags are flying in our yard, lining the street. We saw Old Glory too while we were in DC last 9.12-what a sight! Finally-Happy Birthday US Army! Land of the Free because of the Brave! Thank you for your service.

I think the Douglas County Tea Party gave a great reminder of how crucial the military is to our freedoms. I believe I heard it called the soldier’s verse. Thanks to all who serve.

Saluting all military/firefighters/law enforcement- personnel that are on the front lines protecting us.
