Etheridge on the assault: I’d had a long day, but that’s no excuse

posted at 4:12 pm on June 14, 2010 by Allahpundit

Don’t be too quick to sneer at his apology. Compared to the rest of the left, which has been desperately trying to change the subject by screeching about the fact that the student in the video refused to identify himself, this guy is a model of contrition. In fact, Ben Smith’s got a copy of the Democrats’ talking points on the assault. What’s missing?

1. There is always the part of the story that you can’t see in these gotcha style videos — what were these folks doing, how did they approach him, how were the cameraman and/or others off camera acting?

2. Why would any legitimate student doing a project or a journalist shagging a story not identify themselves. Motives matter — what was the motivation here? To incite this very type of reaction?

3. This is clearly the work of the Republican Party and the “interviewer” is clearly a low level staffer or intern. That’s what explains blurring the face of the “interviewer” and refusing to identify the entity this was done for. The Republicans know if they were caught engaging in this type of gotcha tactic it would undermine their own credibility — yet if it was an individual acting on his own there is no reason that person would have blurred themselves out of the video — and if it was the work of a right wing blog they would have their logo on the video and be shouting their involvement from the roof top.

4. This was a purposefully partisan hit job designed to incite a reaction for political reasons — but it is a tactic so low — the parties involved are remaining anonymous.

5. The fact that no one wants to take credit for this should raise real questions in the minds of voters and the press.

6. Push hard w/ blogs the lack of credibility inherent to anything Breitbart does/posts, given its role in the debunked ACORN videos…

Not a single word is devoted to the idea that asking a question of a congressman shouldn’t mean walking away with his palm print on your neck. Howard Kurtz, Dave Weigel, and Mediaite, among others in the media, have naturally zeroed in on the questioner’s identity as well, which comes as no surprise. As has often been noted, when a government leak hurts Republicans, the story is usually about the information that’s been leaked; when a leak hurts Democrats, the story is usually about the fact of the leak itself. When tea partiers knock off a centrist Republican incumbent, the story is about fringe-dwellers and their insane ideological purity; when the nutroots knock off a centrist Democrat, the story is about principled liberals keeping their representatives honest. Same thing here: If Joe Wilson had answered a question about whether he supports “the Bush agenda” by grabbing a kid by the throat, the kid’s professional affiliation would, I dare say, not be viewed as some sort of mitigating factor for Wilson. But this is the media we have. Second look at conservative “epistemic closure”!

Breitbart and Michael Flynn say they have no idea who shot the video; assuming that the students were indeed Republican “trackers,” paid to shadow Democrats in hopes of capturing a gaffe on film, I wait with bated breath for an explanation as to why these guys are illegitimate but the guy who caught George Allen’s “macaca” line on tape is A-OK. As for why they’re anonymous, R.S. McCain offers a persuasive theory: Given the viciousness of the DNC in trying to make this a story about them, wouldn’t you want to stay anonymous too in order to avoid reprisals?

Note that a reporter asks Etheridge during the Q&A here whether he felt threatened by the student — a perfect set-up for an “I was acting in self-defense” whinge. Etheridge doesn’t go for it, though: He says he’s been spit on before, but if there was any aggression by the questioner or his cameraman as part of this incident, he’s keeping it to himself. Click the image to watch.

Update: Reason’s Michael Moynihan can’t believe the excuse-making either:

The Atlantic rounds up the reactions here, and notes this “skeptical” tweet from my pal and former colleague Dave Weigel: “He’s a student! He’s working on a project! He has no name! Nothing shady there.” Sarcasm acknowledged, but what is “shady” about asking Etheridge a simple, if vague, question? First, the Congressman asks “Who are you?” while knocking the camera out of the kid’s hand and, demonstrating that he possesses a limited familiarity with American law, declaring that he has “a right to know who you are.” On a public street, you have the right to walk away, Bob, but members of Congress have no special rights to demand names and affiliations of those asking questions. Should these kids have been more specific? I would have been, though as demonstrated in the video they were attacked before they were allowed a chance to respond.

I really hope these two are Republican trackers, because it’ll be super-keen to watch the left explain how they had it coming.

Bob ethridge felony running for congress in NOV:

An assault is:

a.An unlawful attempt, coupled with apparent ability, to commit a violent injury on the person of another; or
b.An intentional, unlawful threat by word or act to do violence to the person of another, coupled with an apparent ability to do so, and doing some act which creates a well-founded fear in such other person that such violence is imminent.
A battery is any:

a.Willful and unlawful use of force or violence upon the person of another; or
b.Actual, intentional and unlawful touching or striking of another person against the will of the other; or
c.Unlawfully and intentionally causing bodily harm to an individual.

So if you get ambushed with a question by a stranger with a mic and camera you get to grab the person, restrain them and hold them until you get an answer?

i.e. What’s your name? Can I have your address and phone number? Want to go out on a date with me? What are you doing Friday night?

I am sooo going to love this new rule on college campus around the journalism school.

Yes!

Lamestream media and the Democrat Party – Pro Violence!

When you come out and defend violent behavior, that means you support violent behavior.

And also, just what is it about the “Obama agenda” that causes someone to flip out violently like that? I thought Obama’s agenda was good and popular according to MSNBC and the lamestream media. Hell, Etheridge should have answered “I love the Obama agenda! Everyone loves the Obama agenda, except teabaggers!” lol

that makes sense. It was a credentialed press conference, not an unexpected sidewalk encounter. If a reporter approaches someone unexpectedly on a sidewalk, an introduction would be in order, if they want to act professionally and have a better shot at getting their question answered.

So if you’re a congressman and someone asks you your position on something it is alright for you to assault them.Oh, and demand to see their “papers” so to speak….

sandee on June 14, 2010 at 4:24 PM

Not terribly surprising that democrats & their shills in the press would be hypocritical on that point. State authorities in Arizona can’t ask for identification papers from non-citizens caught committing serious crimes, but federal authorities can not only demand ID from legal citizens, they can beat them up on the spot for non-compliance without due process as long as they have a gen-ewe-wine certified DNC membership card in their pocket. Gotcha, MSNBC.

I wish I could say that a former writer for Reason Magazine would at least pretend to be more philosophically consistent than his Democrat friends in the press, but as we can see from his tweet the profoundly ideologically confused Dave Weigel is squarely in the camp that powerful politicians – at least dem ones – are fully justified beating up citizens for failing to identifying themselves on demand on a public street. How dare a private-sector peon ask one of his overlords a simple question whether or not he supports his party’s agenda? That smartass kid deserved it because he’s not one of us!

Unbelievable. Libertarianism surely doesn’t seem to mean what it used to, does it?

Act 2

Your walking down the hall where you work and you see an executive from administration walking towards you. You know that he is about to be fired by the board for signing a contract his boss told him to sign. Your ask him if he felt he was right for signing the contract. Instead of answering he knocks your papers out of your hand, grabs it and starts demanding you to tell him who you are. He then realizes that others are watching so he grabs you by the nap of the neck and pulls you into a hug, while still demanding who you are. Then he lets you go and walks on the hall.

Now were you assulated by your boss? What would you think he was going to do if he knew who you were? Bet you would not be happy about what happened next. I would also bet you would be pressing assualt charges if not or also, demanding he be fired.

Assuming these two kids where who they claimed or assuming they were not, they were still kids, or young immature men. What their intentions were is an unanswered question but it probably was something that involved a Youtube posting. They were probably aware he voted for the health bill and votes essentially by party line and therfore supports Obama polices.

They did not expect to be assualted. They were probably aware that the man had the power to make things happen, things that would cause them problem and they are too young to think through the situation as a more mature man might. They were being told he had a right that they were not aware off or knew it did not exist, but a man with power said he had the right to know who had asked him a question while he was attacking them in an unlawful way. They probably felt they were in danger and giving him their names would have allowed him to persercute them and by not they had a chance to escape his harm. Afterwards they obviously felt the need to post the video and the fear of reprisal was probably the motivation to blur out their faces. This is reading a lot into it, but it seems to fit.

But as far as we know this kid wasn’t a reporter. He was just a college student doing a project, ergo he had no recognizable name or media outlet which might have satisfied Etheridge’s irrational demand.

You’re saying this kid deserved to get assaulted for not being able to identify himself as a member of one of the beknighted fourth estate? Only certified journalists who can identify themselves as such are entitled to the privilege of asking our congressional overlords questions now? And elected officeholders now enjoy the privilege, if we are to believe Etheridge’s claim in the video, of not only demanding citizens’ ID on a public street, but beating them up if they don’t comply? Is that what you’re saying?

I am pretty sure that with his apology Rep. Etheridge “wants to take credit”. I wonder how many times this will get shown compared to Sen. Allen’s error?

Cindy Munford on June 14, 2010 at 6:29 PM

I didn’t any of our “vaunted” defenders of the people’s right to know, the journalists, ask one of the most critical questions: “Congressman, did you have anything alcoholic to drink in the time leading up to the incident?” I think this guy was hammered and reacted like a lot of drunks do. (Sorry. Didn’t mean to imply anything about drunks.)

Nobody has to identify themselves to ask a congressman on the street if he supports his own party’s president or not. I wish the students who filmed this would come forward and press criminal charges as well as sue this moronic Dem in civil court. Further, I hope he gets thrown out of office during the next election and never works for the government again. If a Republican had attacked someone asking a simple question like this there would be calls for him to resign on every media channel (including Fox) as well as every newspaper and leftist interest group that ever existed.
