Quotes of the day
posted at 9:30 pm on June 13, 2010 by Allahpundit
Sounding reflective as he heads into a bruising electoral season, President Barack Obama told POLITICO columnist Roger Simon that the Gulf disaster “echoes 9/11” because it will change the nation’s psyche for years to come…
“In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11,” the president said in an Oval Office interview on Friday, “I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come.”…
“What the public wants to see is us solving this problem. And that may not make for good TV. Me sitting in a meeting with [Energy] Secretary [Steven] Chu and [Gulf national incident commander] Thad Allen and looking over maps and figuring out how boom gets someplace, that’s not something that is high theater. But ultimately that’s going to make the biggest difference in terms of whether or not the Gulf recovers.”
***
President Barack Obama spent four hours on the golf course Sunday in temperatures that peaked in the low 90s.
The White House pool reported that they left Andrews Air Force Base as it started to rain after 4 p.m.
***
[A] year and a half into this presidency, the contemplative nature that was so appealing in a candidate can seem indecisive in a president. His promise of bipartisanship seems naïve. His inclination to hold back, then ride to the rescue, has sometimes made problems worse.
It certainly should not have taken days for Mr. Obama to get publicly involved in the oil spill, or even longer for his administration to start putting the heat on BP for its inadequate response and failure to inform the public about the size of the spill. (Each day, it seems, brings new revelations about the scope of the disaster.) It took too long for Mr. Obama to say that the Coast Guard and not BP was in charge of operations in the gulf and it’s still not clear that is true…
These are matters of competence and leadership. This is a time for Mr. Obama to decisively show both.
***
The former constitutional lawyer now in the White House understands that the press has a role in the democracy. But he is an elitist, too, as well as thin-skinned and controlling. So he ends up regarding scribes as intrusive, conveying a distaste for what he sees as the fundamental unseriousness of a press driven by blog-around-the-clock deadlines…
But that’s the world we live in. It hurts Obama to be a crybaby about it, and to blame the press and the “old Washington game” for his own communication failures.
“On health care, Obama told single-payer liberals that they had to deal with the world as it is, not as they wanted it to be,” said Jonathan Alter, the author of “The Promise,” about Obama’s first year in office. “But he doesn’t take his own advice when it comes to the media. Obama refuses to deal with the media world as it is. He’s holding out for the media world that he wants. But that will never be. That disdainful attitude toward 24-hour cable culture is slowing his political reflexes. We’re seeing that in the oil spill. I don’t think it’s personal with him. It’s not that he despises reporters as human beings, like Nixon. He does scores of interviews and he doesn’t rage behind closed doors. But if he doesn’t make more concessions to Washington as it is, he’s going to hurt his presidency.”

When did that ever happen? I mean the part about him riding to the rescue… He jumps in his bus and rides over people, jumps in AF1 and jets around like a rock star, and jumps in a golf cart for a round of chasing the lill white ball… But to the rescue….. Never happened.

Just as his “I’m the only thing standing between you and the pitchforks”, and “I won”, he’s telegraphing his next move. He is going after the energy sector and the energy portion of the economy using this as an excuse. The bigger the disaster, the more use he can make of it.

The jive-ass jack-ass should have called for all petro companies to send all available tankers and suction and skimming technology to ground zero. And he should have done it on day one. If this wasn’t an Obama/BP scheme to create an excuse to shut down US drilling, that is.

I got a crazy idea for helping to clean up the spill while giving the shrimpers and fisherman a way to earn a living. If there is a cost effective way for these people who own fishing boats to collect the oil, then the goverment should force BP to purchase the oil for double the going rate for each barrel. If we’d do that, there’d be a whole lot of people down in the Gulf collecting oil, and in true American fashion it won’t take long for someone to come up with a cheap, easy way to collect it.
OxyCon on June 13, 2010 at 11:35 PM
I’ve got a question!!
When a Deep Oil Well is being drilled, would it not be more
suitable for a Oil Rig platform that is secured and stable,
I don’t know!
DeepWater Horizon,is actually a ship, which uses GPS to hover
over the target on huge pontoons, now if it had a sudden dis
charge of oil,er gas bubble,er whatever,and no blow-out per
venter, would that not have rocked DeepWater enough to cause
the catostrophic failure that doomed it,I dunno!
Would a bigger and more stable platform fair better,I dunno!
============================================================
Contrary to popular belief SSV Deepwater Horizon is not a fixed drilling platform — she was a ship capable of 4 knots speed. SSV Deepwater Horizon would deploy over a drilling site and then use use GPS to hover over the well site.
===========
SSV Deepwater Horizon was a fifth generation, RBS-8D design ultra-deepwater dynamic positioned column-stabilized semi-submersible drilling rig, which drills wells in the floor of the sea, while other types of rigs are used to produce oil from the completed wells. The rig was 396 feet (121 m) long and 256 feet (78 m) wide and according to Billy Nungesser, the president of Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, was “one of the largest, deep water, off-shore drilling rigs.” It could operate in waters up to 8,000 feet (2,400 m) deep,[10] and had a maximum drill depth of 30,000 feet (9,100 m). The rig could accomodate up to 146 crew members. The semisubmersible rig was floated to the drilling location; it had pontoons and four columns that partially submerged when the rig was ballasted down to drilling air gap. The rig was not supported by the sea floor but its pontoons sat under the water.

And there’s the money phrase, folks – and explains exactly why he and his administration have been dragging their feet regarding doing anything about the spill, even though the evidence shows that they knew early on that it was bad.
They’ve intentionally let it stay out of control, precisely so they can use it as a big plunger to shove even more government control crap down our throats.

There is a saying in law, “duty to mitigate damages”. I’m not a lawyer, but I know dereliction of duty and criminal negligence when I see it. The federal Oil Protection Act specifically calls for the president to act quickly, decisively and with all means available in just such a circumstance as this.
obama has violated his obligations under this act, as well as I’m sure under many other statutes. With the unbelievable inaction on obama’s part, there must be a very strong legal case to be made against him. He said he was responsible, time for him to be removed for his rape of the Gulf. We must not let the crisis go to waste!
We the people must start demanding his investigation and removal – we have to set the agenda, start playing offense instead of constantly reacting to zero’s evil actions like abused women who, “can’t believe he did it again.”.
And, how is it that he has blacked out all media coverage by air (the Gulf is now a no fly zone) land and sea and has the nerve (shows how little he fears the people) to go national on Tuesday in order to demand control of the energy industry and put another nail in our coffin?
If we were doing our conservative jobs, he would be in terror for his job and hoping to avoid a life sentence. Instead, he will be treating us to another mussolini moment on Tuesday.
Where, how, does it end?
If we can’t or won’t use this un-frikkin-believable evil that zero has caused through not allowing a multi-million gallon spill to be cleaned and contained, then I don’t believe we will ever be rid of him. If he can blackout all coverage of the worst natural catastrophe in our nation’s history, AND sabotage the containment of it while he uses it to empower himself and weaken us beyond belief, then there are no words to describe our lost opportunity. WE MUST REMOVE HIM NOW. WE MUST CONTROL THE AGENDA AND PUT BARRY ON THE DEFENSE. NOW AND UNTIL WE DRIVE HIM FROM OFFICE AND INTO LEAVENWORTH WHERE HE BELONGS.

What planet are we on? He’s about 2 months late and of course the fool shouldn’t, and couldn’t if he wanted to, be the one personally placing booms.
The booms, tankers, sand barriers, etc. should have all been there and continuing to come since week one, and would have been, if obama hadn’t deliberately sabotaged the cleanup.
Does anyone know if zero has even called a state of emergency yet?

Oil Spill: Who’s to Blame?
1. BP
2. Nature
3. Government Regulation and oversight
There was obviously a dereliction of duty and negligence. BP and contractors failed in real time. The uncovered story is in the dereliction of duty with the government oversight of the safety plan, disaster plan, and their rubber-stamping of the job and all they do is give an excuse that 30 days is not enough time to complete a thorough review.

One of the kids said it best.
“o bo got into the prez thing cause it got a lota BLING“.
Oil blowouts are not blingy.Golf is blingy cause you don’t wear mom jeans, you look cool.

Let me see if I have it straight. It is the same as 9/11 – the same 9/11 that the left excoriated President Bush for the few minutes he spent continuing to read to schoolkids, but Obama’s 9/11 (or Waterloo depending on your take of it)allows for him to go golfing, raise money for hurting political cronies, and avoid asking for weeks -”what the hell’s going on?”
I’ll say this for George Bush – He knew who’s ass to kick!

This is absolutely true. They are more evil than most people know. Glenn Beck has the right angle on all of this.

In spite of all the evidence to the contrary, the ignorant a-holes at the NYT still don’t doubt Obama’s competence and leadership. They just don’t understand why he won’t stand up and show everyone the George Washington-like (Stalin-like?) qualities he possesses.
Like I said in another thread, they are welded to Obama. The best they can muster is to nag him.
SKYFOX on June 14, 2010 at 8:22 AM
Obama’s no scholar, he’s a politician. He’s never tried a constitutional case, and I wouldn’t trust him to, because he is totally disconnected from reality. His relationship with democratic institutions is perverted and destructive. The image of Obama with Columbia is a scene of abuse.
GTR640 on June 14, 2010 at 8:35 AM
Everything is politics with Obama like the campaign is still going on.
RobCon on June 14, 2010 at 8:36 AM
I wonder if they’ll ever figure out a way to get the booms down there or Kevin Costner’s oil extracting machines? Wouldn’t that be kind of a priority for this administration? It’s beyond being urgent. Squabble about who is going to pay for it later, just get the frigging things down to the gulf for crying out loud before it turns into this

9/11, eh? Sounds like he’s gearing us up for another huge powergrab. Manufacturing sector: Check. Financial sector: Check. Healthcare: Check. Energy: Check. NEver let a good crisis go to waste.
dhimwit on June 14, 2010 at 10:12 AM
This isn’t Obama’s Katrina, hostage crisis, or 9/11.
This is Obama’s Reichstag fire.
This is the crisis he needed to mow over the last significant political opposition to his agenda.
bitsy on June 14, 2010 at 10:25 AM
What is bad for the Gulf is good for Obama. By using a national crisis to advance his personal agenda, he is exploiting the suffering of millions of people.

Dowd –
It must be time to ditch the press archives of the 2008 campaign, and all those lovey-dovey, pandering, breathless, vacuous articles of adoration, with their constant cautions that any criticism of The One was somehow racist. It must be time.

The guy is more of an empty suit than anyone ever believed possible. The epitome of a true liberal.
