Video: Dem Rep ends up with egg on his face in Bernanke hearing

posted at 10:55 am on June 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The first thing law schools teach litigators is to not ask questions without knowing the answer. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) never went to law school — and it shows in this exchange from Wednesday between himself and Ben Bernanke, the Fed chair, who was testifying on Capitol Hill. Connolly wanted to slap at his Republican colleagues who want spending cuts to bring the budget into balance by getting Bernanke to say that there isn’t enough money in the budget to cut, and that revenue has to be increased to end deficits. Unfortunately, as Liberty Central notes, Connolly got broadsided by Bernanke, who responded that “of course!” the budget could get cut — if Congress would just do it:

CONNOLLY: I’m telling you, they don’t have an open mind. They have publicly expressed that they do not favor — you know, they’re all for deficit reduction as long as anything having to do with revenue is off the table. Can we get to serious deficit reduction — change that trajectory you talked about — if we eliminate half of the ledger sheet?

BERNANKE: Well, theoretically you could if you cut enough, but it would be very difficult to do that.

CONNOLLY: Is there enough spending to be cut?

BERNANKE: Of course! I mean … [laughs]

CONNOLLY: National defense, homeland security?

BERNANKE: That’s your judgment, that’s the Congress’ judgment. That’s not my judgment.

CONNOLLY: Ah. Um … it must be nice to be an economist.

The entire premise of his question is absurd. The budget for FY2010 exceeds $3.8 trillion, which means that we don’t have to eliminate “half the ledger sheet” in order to close a $1.3 trillion deficit.  We only need to eliminate a third of the ledger sheet.  That $3.8 trillion, by the way, is $1.1 trillion more than the last budget from a Republican Congress, FY2007.  If we returned to the FY2007 budget, we’d be almost all of the way there just by eliminating all of the spending increases inserted after Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid took charge of the budgeting process.

The real story of the deficit is that the budget has grown by almost double in the space of 10 years, from $2 trillion in FY2000 to almost $4 trillion today despite inflation being practically nonexistent the entire time.  We’re not in deficits because the American taxpayer doesn’t shove enough money into Washington’s Leviathan maw; we’re in deficit because Washington can’t stop spending more and more money.  Gerry Connolly is a poster boy for that problem.

So does Connolly want to cut ANY spending? If not, then he’s proposing to make up a $1.4 trillion deficit through tax increases which would be economic(not to mention electoral) suicide.

When the leadership in the demonrat party is so undeniably incompetent, what could you expect from the bottom feeders?

volsense on June 11, 2010 at 11:09 AM

Big government makes us poorer in two ways–financially and morally. Morally, because big government encourages us (by taking away our money) to trade our real heart-felt compassion (for the less fortunate) for the government’s fake compassion. It’s a horrible trade, for both givers and receivers. Both lose.

RBMN on June 11, 2010 at 11:09 AM

Democrats have been stuck on stupid my entire life. They don’t know anything about economics. Economics was not my expertise either, but my Dad left me at my first job away from home with one parting shot. “Don’t spend more money than you earn.”
It was difficult when you had to pay out money for insurance and car repairs that you weren’t expecting. Who knew all of these unexpected horrors would eat up my salary? I didn’t and it was quite an education being out on my own and actually being responsible. Looks like the Democrats have never learned this elementary lesson.

Ugh; he’s a rep for a district close to mine. Can’t stand him. Econ 101 – FAIL. So he’s implying that they’re not even spending enough to be cut? And then, of course, his first sacrificial lamb is national defense.

Don’t know anything about the guy yet, but here’s the web page for Keith Fimian who’ll be on the repub ticket to challenge Connolly in Nov: http://keithfimian.com/

That’s right out of the LibSpaz playbook. In local politics, whenever cuts in spending come up, it’s always police, fire, etc. first.

Connolly spent like a drunken sailor when he was chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. He’s never cut a dime of spending anywhere in his career, and there has always been a never-ending source of other people’s money for him to spend. Why should he start thinking about not spending now, when he can vote to print money and borrow without limit? He’s the proverbial kid in the candy store.

He’s the poster boy for nearly all politicians currently serving in DC. They could understand the math if they wanted to, but they think the budget cannot be cut because it might mean losing their jobs. They will never cut programs that will affect their friends, family and supporters. Most of these people are useless free-riders who could never survive in the private sector.

The real story of the deficit is that the budget has grown by almost double in the space of 10 years, from $2 trillion in FY2000 to almost $4 trillion today despite inflation being practically nonexistent the entire time.

Actually, according the the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, $2 trillion in 2000 dollars is $2.544 as of April 2010.

Here’s a handy inflation calculator.

Same here. Regardless of what one may think of Greenspan or Bernanke they are intelligent. Much of what they have to do is reactive and a result of the insane policies of politicians.

In fairness to Greenspan, I remember him repeatedly warning Congress about derivatives and entitlement spending. They never listen.

in_awe on June 11, 2010 at 12:18 PM

Remember: To a Democrat a cut means a decrease in the rate of government growth from what you wish and not an actual decrease in government growth. So growing 5% in size instead of 10% as wished is a 50% cut in government even though size has increased.

These nuts are the same idiots who, when they win a jackpot, are mad because they could have won more had they bet more and not at all happy that they won in the first place.
