Allen: Uh, no one told me about Maine boom company

posted at 1:36 pm on June 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The Obama administration continues to insist that they have full control over the Gulf oil spill, and that they are on top of all the potential solutions.  Jake Tapper just punched a big hole in that PR effort.  In an interview with Admiral Thad Allen, the man in charge of the federal effort to manage the crisis, Allen seems to have missed a big story about a Maine boom manufacturer who can’t get their phone calls returned:

TAPPER: I talked to a guy who runs a company in Maine that offers boom, and he has – he says – the ability to make 90,000 feet of boom a day. High quality. BP came there 2 weeks ago, looked at it, they are doing another audit today. He is very frustrated, he says he has a lot of high quality boom to go and it is taking a long time for BP to get its act together. Don’t you need this boom right now?

ALLEN: Oh we need all the boom wherever we can get it. If you give me the information off camera I’ll be glad to follow up.

Er, isn’t this the very information that the White House and Interior are supposed to know before we do?  Yet three days ago, Allahpundit featured not one but two videos showing the frustation of Packgen’s management that their decision to produce high-quality boom to meet the expected demand has left them with a lot of unpurchased inventory, while the oil continues its way to Gulf coastlines.  ABC also reported on Bobby Jindal’s demand for three million feet of absorbent boom material on May 24th.  No one at the White House thought to Google for a manufacturer and start calling for sales?

Maybe Obama should appoint Jake Tapper to head up the effort.  He seems to know more about what’s happening than the White House team.

Some intrepid Louisianans (or other Americans for that matter) ought to drive some flag draped trucks up to Maine and load up and get a national effort going to start cleaning up this mess. Toonces is hitting the guardrails and it’s obvious that some hardy, courageous and entrepreneurial individuals are going to have to put their efforts forward and whip everybody up and get at least the clean up efforts out of the “college seminar” phase.

So if liberals are willing to go this far, what else are they capable of?

I think this is a little harsh on the administration’s efforts. You have to be realistic and take everything into context.

For instance, Googling information on purchasing boom would probably take a tad bit more time than singing Hey Jude. And I’m not really sure if they can get a secure connection to the internet while on the golf course. I believe Googling that type of information on an unsecured connection could be a national security issue.

No one should have to “tell” the commander about this type of stuff—-the administration, DHS, the company, the citizens and every swingin’ richard between Maine and Louisiana ought to be throwing that stuff down there.

I gots an idea…how about a “Booms Across America” plan—from Maine to the Gulf. My pocket calculator says that its about 1600 miles from Maine to Louisiana, that’s about 8 million feet, and Bobby Jindall asked for 10 million feet of the stuff so let’s link a chain of Americans between Maine and LA and just hand over hand that stuff to get it down there so we can get some sh!t done. Human chain type stuff. It’d be slow as hell but it would matter—it would get the country involved and revved up about doing something and that, my friends, is what we need around here. Stick a finger in Washington DC’s eye and send them a big “F**K YOU!” by doing what Americans do and that’s getting down and dirty and getting shiite done when it needs to happen.

scalleywag on June 11, 2010 at 2:09 PM

This is what happens when you reward incompetence, have no accountability and perpetual passing of the buck.

A common mantra, second only to “who is John Galt?”, in Atlas Shrugged was, “you can’t blame me, you know how it is these days, it isn’t my fault that”…blah, blah, blah.

The malignancy that is the progressive movement, stems from the misunderstanding that 1984 & Atlas Shrugged were warnings, not How To manuals on governance.

A common refrain I keep running into is are we gonna make it to 2012? And this is from people who voted for these conniving cretins, in Chicago of all places. To them I can only reply that, the jury is still out, I don’t know.

As things stand now, it may not be a problem, but the longer this thing drags out, the bigger the hit BP takes — PR-wise, financially, and all-around.

Best-case scenario, BP comes out of this not smelling like roses. Worst-case scenario? BP takes longer to recover financially than the gulf coast does environmentally.

But back to the topic of the post, at-hand…

If an oil/petroleum services company as big as BP is being cast as “clueless,” why are we supposed to trust an administration full of wonks who have never held real jobs at all?
