Video: NC protest turns violent; Update: video restored
posted at 10:12 am on June 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Maybe it’s just me, but if I’d gotten slugged in the face and my wife pushed around by a counterprotester, I don’t think I would have politely agreed to step back on the sidewalk while videotaping the man who assaulted me. Give the North Carolina protester who took one for the team some credit; Nathan Tabor handled himself extraordinarily well in upsetting circumstances. For his trouble, both Tabor and the man who mugged him, Govenor Spencer, will have to face off again, this time in court, but somehow this video tends to make me believe he’ll be just fine (via Gateway Pundit and The Right Scoop):
The local Fox News affiliate covered the story:
Tabor says they were protesting a proposed amendment that would give companies money to help with rising credit card fees. He says he was videotaping the event when Govenor Spencer, of Greensboro, approached the protest.
“About that time a gentleman walks around the corner and walks into the middle of the crowd saying it’s all George W. Bush’s fault. It’s all Dick Cheney’s fault.” Tabor said.
The video shows Spencer and at least one protester arguing. Tabor says he stopped recording as the protest began to conclude and walked over to the sidewalk where his wife and 5-year-old daughter were standing.
“As I walked around the corner this gentleman pushed me. And when he pushed me the first time I turned my camera on and brought my camera up. I said please don’t push me. And when I said that he slapped my camera.” Tabor said. “He pushes me again. In the video you can see my body fall back. And I did not say anything to him, I didn’t engage him. I was going to, until he touched me wife.”
Tabor says Spencer pushed his wife and he pushed Spencer back. The video shows Spencer then punching Tabor in the face.
In the video, Spencer is seen telling Tabor that he hit him because Tabor pushed him. Spencer denies hitting Tabor’s wife. Both men have filed assault charges against each other.
Spencer referred FOX8 to his attorney Joe Williams, who said: “We are going to deal with this in the courtroom. Mr. Tabor is going to find out that being wealthy doesn’t make a difference in a courtroom.”
Somehow, I doubt that a class-warfare defense will work in Spencer’s favor. The tape clearly shows that he initiated the confrontation, was asked to keep away and stop touching Tabor, and became even more aggressive. Maybe a little wealth-bashing is all Williams can muster in Spencer’s defense.
Update: YouTube pulled the video, but Eyeblast has it now, courtesy of The Right Scoop.

From someone whose first reaction would have been to respond in kind, that’s excellent strategery! We have to remember they’ve made no secret about wanting to show us as being violent.

I find that beyond disgusting. You, and others like you, literally are risking your lives so people like him are free to pinch off little loaves of :redacted: into their computer. That he would be so weak as to resort to that level of name-calling is both sad and sickening. It’s also completely nosensical, I have never once read anything you have ever posted that even remotely could be considered racist no matter how far it was stretched.
Why it hasn’t happened yet, I don’t know, but I can’t imagine his days here are many.
Anyway, thank you for all you do, and sorry about the mess on your boots you occasionally have to deal with.

Really late to the thread. MB4 gone? That’s tragic; enjoyed his lyrical musings. But, I agree with Bishop, Nutbar should not be banned . . . yet. But he should (if he hasn’t yet) apologize to Hawk. That was beyond outrageous.
Firefly_76 on June 10, 2010 at 1:14 PM

I agree on the condition that he is just young and thinks every stupid remark is a reflection on his decision to try to be “conservative” and he isn’t someone trying to smear the site. How do we tell?
Cindy Munford on June 10, 2010 at 1:21 PM
I asked someone who would know if he was banned and he said not. I am hoping he is just expanding his play list.
Cindy Munford on June 10, 2010 at 1:23 PM
I’d probably have hit him back.
I support more robust self-defense laws. If someone hits you, you should be allowed to defend yourself to remove the threat. They hit you, you should be allowed to make sure they can’t hit you again. If that means a trip for them to the hospital, so be it.
If someone hit my wife, I assure you that they would not walk away.
I hope that SOB serves some time, but unfortunately, will probably get a slap on the wrist.

And people seem surprised by this, why?
Liberals are violent. The beginnings of the Tea Party Movement should’ve shown you that. People being assaulted. Racially motivated assaults by SEIU union thugs (a hate crime, but for some reason neither pursued nor prosecuted as such by Holder or Obama), people getting fingers bitten off (a criminal charge of maiming or even mayhem, but, again, mysteriously never pursued as such), etc.
Liberals are hypocritical liars. This guy should be charged, not only for multiple cases of assault, but also child endangerment (for assaulting the cameraman’s wife, in close proximity to her minor child) and filing a false police report (claiming the guy assaulted him, and that claim being easily debunked by the footage). The guy’s first instincts were to blame Bush and to lie (same thing, actually, but I’m talking about 2 different instances).
And “the People” have (allegedly) elected the worst of the liberals in Congress into office. He’s proven his violent streak by, creating an armed American gestapo for use against American citizens (http://www.sflaconservative.com/sflaconservative/2010/3/30/alert-paramilitary-corps-hidden-in-health-care-law.html), and he’s proven he’s a liar, over-and-over, again, most recently in his sputtering over the oil gusher in the Gulf (http://www.therightscoop.com/mark-levin-obama-has-been-lying-about-the-oil-spill).
This fat slob that took it upon himself to interject in these peoples’ free speech exercise does nothing more than show himself the arch-typical liberal. Hopefully, it’ll cost him a lot of money in fines and court costs, and significant time in jail.

Ed’s intern here … just reading all of your banter.
I suggest you are one big dysfunctional family. And as I screen for content that actually violates terms of use (the criteria for dreaded Ban Hammer) I find that I agree with Bishop:
If anyone’s highjacking the thread its the three stooges bantering about smacking each other with food items :) Once again, dysfunctional family.
And for the rest of you, don’t get your undies in a wad. If you want to be serious, be serious and ignore the anti-wisconsonians.

I’m only against the ban-hammer irt Narutoboy because it’s fun to see everyone else smack him down time and time again. I am surprised he got away with the insult against hawkdriver, though, because I’ve seen people get tossed for lesser offenses. I’ll admit, though, that was a long time ago, and things have changed since the last time I spent a good deal of time on this site.
The virtual food fight should continue, too. Always worth a good chuckle. : )
Anna on June 10, 2010 at 1:50 PM
My undies are definately unwadded. I just didn’t think that accusations of our servicemen belonging to the KKK counted as adding “zest” to the site.
I would hope that kind of thing would be discouraged if not publically, at least in e-mails to the offender.
DrAllecon on June 10, 2010 at 1:54 PM
Nor are my “undies” in a wad. As a service member myself, it is offensive, unsubstantiated, and wrong to attribute such a smear to a heckuva guy who fights for nutjobs safety. It’s okay to have freedom of speech, but not freedom from the consequences of what you say. It is disgraceful and certainly ban worthy to see this guy ruin multiple threads, trash great guys, and have nothing happen to him.
BTW…/commando/

Hi, Amy! It’s nice to meet you virtually. :-) I’m glad to see differing viewpoints here, but accusing Hawkdriver of being in the KKK went over the line, IMHO.
To all: Count me as an “aye” vote for banning Narutoboy. I don’t recall that I’ve ever responded to any of his posts, but if I have, I will never do so again. If, after all our pleas, the management still refuses to ban him, I’ll just ignore him, and I encourage everyone else to do so, too.

Congrats you make the baker’s dozen for the motion. I agree with Bishop though. Echo chambers are only good for insomniacs. Hawkdriver can go into combat for our country and brave hostile fire. Surely an anonymous comment from one anonymous poster to another is something he can weather.
Good on Tabor for the self control and presence of mind. Had he launched an assault it would have been covered much as personal fouls are in sports — the one who hits last gets whistled.

Piece of advice to pacifists.
If you’re not going to retaliate
to a physical assault on your person,
at least fall to the ground and request an ambulance.
At hospital, claim pain and ask for medication, your injuries will be documented by professionals.
Therefore, if a criminal charge is not made by the LEOs, at least you’ll have the satisfaction of producing evidence for winning a civil suit.
For non-pacifists, hit the SOB with all you got, including your Camera!
Funny, how the bullies always attack the weakest in the herd.

Count me in for banning the commie puke; however, we can’t allow most every thread to be taken over by commie pukes and then cry to the bosses about banning the puke.
Self discipline folks. Ignore the commie puke and engage those who you wish to have a conversation or debate with. If not, we are easy prey.
Hawk, you and every other member of our military are the true American treasure. No doubt about that comrade, and only a commie puke would think otherwise.

I don’t need you to agree with me. I’ve committed no bannable offense and my being here still is proof of that. On the other hand, I think continuously rambling on about wanting someone banned, might in fact be worth a ban. Your crew, again, has tried to team up on me and get me banned. The only one here who was banned happened to be the racist I called out.

Mary in LA on June 10, 2010 at 2:25 PM
The comment was that Fox and The Weekly Standard are as biased and critical as MSNBC and Time. And thus a liberal asked me how the lefty media and pols incite this sort of thing but the right does not. And how does race have anything to do with it?
Well, if you create a category of folks who have their economic position, self image and even personal safety threatened by the general society and spearheaded by a certain group, you have a very worried person.
Labor conflicts frequently become violent. It is dangerous to mess with someone’s food, clothing ans shelter!
We have a forty year history of handouts by the left to their poor (often minority) friends. We have boot licking and pandering with a strong ingredient of pity and expected anger. Of course, the left expects and sometimes creates black anger. And every time it can be used to further some new entitlement which blacks allegedly can’t secure for themselves in the free market system, the left has an instant base.
Imagine, if you will, the right constantly doing the same for soldiers or police. They do try to help their heroes, of course. But it is in such a subtle way, they might as well not bother. We have little affirmative action for soldiers and no way for members of law enforcement to really ‘make it’ in our society. Do some research on the stress and social issues of police and military folks.
The minority self image pandering by the left is too obvious to comment on. PC is so strong that you can’t hope to make a negative comment about blacks unless you coat it in so much sugar that the point disappears. And the defenses become so vituperative that any slight suggests the need for a violent reply. Compare that to the right’s defense of police, service folks or (as I toss in another group) gun owners. The left keeps the exposed nerve of minority pride exposed with constant reference to white stereotypes or cultural insults. The fact that it hasn’t happened in half a century doesn’t make the myth less relevant.
The final major ingredient is personal safety. Scott Brown drove a pickup truck and this was turned into a discussion of racism and even violence against blacks. If you missed it, you don’t watch MSNBC at all. By contrast, the lack of a clear strategy after His election, the delayed decisions on our overseas goals and insults to allies surely put our troops at risk. Then there is almost never a mention of how giving terrorists a lovely Gitmo, failing to secure the border with the right technical and physical assistance and indeed, running apparently understaffed posts and patrols risks law enforcement lives. A candidate with a little GMC is scary. A illegal with an AK-47 is no problem.
I suggest that someone with questions about this check the liberal twits on any channel or then see the effects of on a population which has been sold on the idea that they live in a hopeless, hostile and generally hideous, corrupt country with their only hope being a new Democrat administration. Would you be industrious and innovative or angry and paranoid?

I agree. Our voices do need to count wrt to the application of the TOS. We can police ourselves and should have some say in who gets bumped. Ed, AP and Amy et al shouldn’t have to police every comment and render judgement, however, they should take into account the opinions of their loyal, faithful, devoted, snarky, and damn good looking regulars though. IMO
Mary is ~14 or 15 IIRC….jus sayin’
ted c on June 10, 2010 at 2:31 PM
Hawk, you are right. This argument goes to character. One remark that might, if you close one eye and look at it sideways, be construed as racist does not make a person “a racist”. To believe that it does is to have been brainwashed by political correctness.
Your opponent’s argument also fails on logical grounds. If a person makes a remark that is taken as evidence that the person is a racist, it does not follow that that person is a member of the KKK. All KKK members are racists, but not all racists are KKK members. Your opponent assumed facts not in evidence.
Mary in LA on June 10, 2010 at 2:33 PM

The key thing here is that as the left gets more and more desperate, there will, I believe, be more encounters like this. Someone eariler was saying that there should always be someone there with a camera. I agree. And be prepared for anything. that is what the tips address is for – the site owners can make the call. Who defines troll and over the top? Follow the logic all the way and it becomes all commenters must vote on who gets banned or admonished which is impractical. You can always start your own site and ban to your heart’s content.
I’ve seen plenty of threads where totally inappropriate comments that go against the TOS were ignored while some food fight went on between several commenters.

I’ll go out on a limb here and guess that that’s because the proprietors actually have to eat, sleep, and interact with their families occasionally. ;-)
I feel very lucky that we have Hot Air. A lot of work must go into it behind the scenes that we never see. To that end, if we can’t “vote someone off the island” who is screwing up, we can at least make the proprietors’ job easier by ignoring the trolls and refusing to play their game.

o.0 If you can’t get banned for slurring a service member and calling him a Nazi or white supremacist wizard, then I think the standards are off kilter.
o.0 I think it’s more along the line of keeping the voice of dissent around, to avoid the whole echo chamber thing. However, there are plenty of ways to dissent, and plenty of dissenters, that do not need to resort to such things.
I left for a few hours to attend a business lunch, and this is still going on. o.0 Then AP comes in, Naruto decides to be a nice kitten when the mods are about, and then it goes right back where it started. That’s pretty special, there.
o.0 Truth of the matter is, you use a racial slur, you get Banstick. Call someone a Nazi, repeatedly, mention how they need to be wiped from the face of the earth, et cetera, and you’re hunky dory.
By this point, “Nazi” ought to be on par with racial slurs, especially since the usage of it implies an approval of the slaughter of a group of people due to the color of their skin, or their ethnic heritage, a la Israel. You would think that merits a response, but apparently, it does not.
It is an objective lesson – political correctness never dies.
KinleyArdal on June 10, 2010 at 3:17 PM
Incidentally, no one around here is a Nazi. I thought I’d mention that!
KinleyArdal on June 10, 2010 at 3:19 PM
Did you “think” that any of us believe it wasn’t you that, actually, you know, left the comment in the first place?
And anyone who wants to can figure out how to use a proxy server to hide an IP address…just in case you try to lamely make that defense.
Instead of a ban, perhaps an ignore feature would be a good option. Anyone who didn’t want to hear from a race baiting child wouldn’t have to.

That would be quite awesome.

what’s the emoticon supposed to suggest?
eh on June 10, 2010 at 3:48 PM
It’s a “shifty eyes” kind of emote. It denotes suspicion.
I guess you learn something every day – Youtube is also in the tank for the Left. What’s worst, I cannot muster any shock.
KinleyArdal on June 10, 2010 at 3:51 PM
The >.> emoticon represents someone wincing, I think.
Tetriskid saved the day by saving a copy — see upthread.

Are there any video upload alternatives to Youtube that could be used?
KinleyArdal on June 10, 2010 at 3:51 PM
Never mind! ;-)
Mary in LA on June 10, 2010 at 3:52 PM
You’re an imbecile. Hot Air isn’t even open for registration. Did I create that account knowing I would activate it however many days, months, or years later just to make a racist statement?
Conspiracy nut.
Just admit that you have those people in your midst. Deal with it.

New video link:

If it gets pulled again, I will upload my copy…
TASS71 on June 10, 2010 at 3:54 PM
there are, but why cede the turf of you tube to false-flagging lefties.
and why the “shifty eyes” emoticon for me? ye, who only joined here three months ago?
eh on June 10, 2010 at 3:55 PM
I interpreted that as suspicion of YouTube’s motives in yanking the video, not of you!
Mary in LA on June 10, 2010 at 3:57 PM
Mary is quite correct, I intended zero offense towards you for bringing the matter to public attention. I am quite tired at the moment, and not being terribly specific. I apologize for any confusion. @_@ It is Youtube, and most certainly not you, that I am leery of.
KinleyArdal on June 10, 2010 at 4:01 PM
don’t promote that link. it was reuploaded with a title which makes too much of the attacker’s racial identity. “black radical” refers to a specific set of politisized racialist beliefs. this guy was just a garden variety progressive who just happened to be black. i suspect the uploader’s intentions.
this upload:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8YXGx1rHxY
has better, more complete meta-information, including snippets from the news story. plus, he’s moderating the comments so that lefty trolls like “JohnGalt42088″ and narutoboy’s sockpuppet from this thread can’t dirty it up.
eh on June 10, 2010 at 4:02 PM
And now, uploaded here as well.
Someone claimed the original video might have been yanked on account of some of the comments made. As a precaution, I have made comments from all non-friends require my approval before posting.
