Quotes of the day

“Her decision to get – and stay – involved in the race here in South Carolina was a huge boon to our campaign, because it caused a lot of South Carolinians to take a second look at a rising in the polls but once-little known state legislator who was fighting to give them back their government,” Haley spokesman Tim Pearson said of Palin…

“Governor Palin’s endorsement was integral to the success of our campaign,” Fiorina spokeswoman Julie Soderlund told POLITICO. “She provides the ‘good housekeeping seal of approval’ for conservative, outsider candidates. After earning her endorsement we saw an immediate spike in support for Carly amongst conservatives, who represent the vast majority of Republican primary voters.”

Rachel Larimore makes great points, as always, but I differ from her slightly in that I don’t really want the wins framed as a Year of the Woman kind of thing. They didn’t win because they are women. They won for the people that they are and for the real world experience that they bring. In Whitman’s, Fiorina’s and Haley’s cases, for instance, they have actually, you know, made a payroll as opposed to living off the public sector their whole lives. Having run businesses themselves, they understand how they work, in practice and not just in theory.

However, I don’t think any woman must like them just because they are women. That plays right into old school identity politics and we need to be done with that. What I will not stand for, though, is outright sexism used to diminish these women, as is happening today with Sarah Palin. Again.

***
Many women’s response to Palin’s emergence as a major political figure highlights this need for ideological diversity. Shortly after the election of 2008, at a lecture I gave at Touro College law school in Long Island, a student in her late twenties made a powerful statement about what Palin’s candidacy meant to her personally. “I’m a professional woman who is also a wife and a mom, and a pro-life, conservative Christian,’’ she said. “I have always felt that feminism did not speak to me or for me. When I saw Sarah Palin, I felt I could finally call myself a feminist, because here was a feminist like me.’’

I haven’t. Creepy guy.

Nevermind that. What happened to the coffee party???

How far is the ride? The Husband has two Harleys but I think he might be selling them. Most of his friends aren’t riding anymore.

So if you have alterations you can’t be taken seriously? That does not bode well for several ladies of the Left.

Cindy Munford on June 10, 2010 at 12:22 AM

No the left has a different naarative for ladies on the left.

as far as your comment about Allah and the bad press. what I find amazing is those that think Palin’s bad press is only for Palin. Any GOP candidate that gets the nomination will have to run that race of bad press and smears. those that think if Palin just doesn’t run the media will stop the bad press for GOP candidates are not thinking clearly.

Mitt will be painted as a fat cat wall streeter with close personal ties to lobbyists and the DC establishment. there will be tons of stories on how Bain capital destoryed companies and shipped jobs overseas and how Mitt got rich off of their suffering.

One of the main reasons McCain pick Palin in the first place is because the op-research and press already had feet thick folders of bad press for Mitt, t-paw and other possible choices to go from day one. McCain hoped to deflect all that bad press by picking someone they did not have a file on. It worked but McCain forget he had to fill in the gaps before his enemies did.

You are going to have to find me there. We decided not to enter a bike in the drag competition, mainly because the effin thing decided to become possessed and keeps having electrical problems. I got mad enough that I decided to use the Bobcat and crush the bike into the dirt but I was talked out of it.

We will be everywhere, but if you look for clothing that says “BR Racing” on it you are guaranteed to find one of my group, they might even be half sober if you’re lucky.

While we can gripe about the double standards amongst ourselves, it doesn’t do any good to confront the media with it. They are just blind or willfully stupid. For the most part I am feeling better about our chances. Life keeps getting in the way of the Left and they aren’t handling it very well. I hate to say it but this will have to be a winging-it sort of thing. Cell phone coverage is not only poor at Sturgis but there are 20,000 people trying to use what bandwidth exists; personal experience has made them a useless tool for me there.

Since we aren’t doing the drags it’s up in the air on when we will be there and for how long. It starts on 9/9 but opening day is one horrifying, crappy-ass traffic jam so we usually get there on day three or so. The grounds are larger every year so the best I can do is tell you where we will probably be, subject to the whim of the monsters I hang out with and their desire to…uh…get involved with the local hotspots.

Bishop on June 10, 2010 at 12:55 AM

Strangest thing we ever saw on the way to Sturgis was a group of Scandanavian bikers decked out like the Angels, but talking like the Swedish Chef.

Never been to the rally, but we used to visit my inlaws every year at the same time. We’d see a lot of folks in the rest areas in, around, and leading to it for hundreds of miles.

Bingo. That is the real lesson of 2008. They learned that the “Palin treatment” works, and they will now use it on any and all GOP nominees. I like Mitt fine, but between
Romneycare and his business/corporate image, not to mention the LDS angle, they’ll tear him apart.

Paraphrasing what she said:
Interviewer: “Are you saying Rush Limbow can’t use your song?”

Hynde: “The music’s out there. Anyone who buys the rights is welcome to use it. And is Rush Limbaugh such a subversive character? Do we really have to be afraid of him? I mean my mom and dad listen to Rush, so he can’t be that dangerous.”

I think the trouble politicans are having is that the world as changed. this is really only the seond cycle where the internet has been a factor in politics. the Left had it to themselves in 2006, in 2008 the right was born ojn line yet stioll not will positioned. However now in 2010 every politicans every word is recorded, his/her every act and politicans can no longer two time the american public. They still think they can but they can’t.

I think by 2012 and esp by 2014 politicans will figure this out and have to vote how they talk and talk hoew they vote. No more voting liberal in washington and talking conservative in their state. those days do to youtube, blogs, and databases are finished. Now the people just have to figure out how to parley that power into votes to clean up DC

That might take to 2016 but I see the future and DC is screwed…

The author of the piece (Boston.com) sticks in a knife in Palin by saying women at a “Christian college” thought Palin was ill-informed and lacking in ideas but good with sound-bites. Hmm. If that is true, then liberals own Christian colleges cuz that’s the liberal mantra on Palin. Palin ill-informed? That needs thinking about for … 1 second. Not. Palin lacking in ideas? That needs thinking about for a millisecond. Not. If the writer is speaking the truth (she’s a journalist and likely telling untruths) then one must wonder about the information awareness of the women with whom she spoke.

SilentWatcher on June 10, 2010 at 6:01 AM

In the wake of the ridiculous assertions that Palin has gotten a boob job, some needs to come out with T-shirts of Palin and Haley with the slogan, “They’re real, and they’re spectacular.”

I caught a bit of Haley on Hannity last night. She does well on TV.

I hope the Palin’s do the RV thing the rest of the summer until Creepy Guy’s lease is up.

I was reading Michelle’s post about her adventure and it sounds like fun.

For them. My idea of roughing it is a room without a mini bar.

Jaynie59 on June 10, 2010 at 8:24 AM

Sarah Palin has met her own goal, to be effective without an official “label.”

I always thought the pundit talk about how she “should” have stayed governor was inaccurate. Why? She was, due to the Alaskan ethics laws which weren’t constructed to deal with such national intense focus, made her nothing but a fish in a barrel.

She wiggled out. But had she been stupid and backed only far-right types, she’d have squandered her opportunity.

She did not misstep. She had a great night. Well deserved.

Most of all, I’m personally glad that my own admiration for her wasn’t misplaced. I always sensed a kind of centered, sensible personality in her.

She’s proven that to me, anyway. She didn’t just back all teaparty candidates nilly-willy. And she even lost a few races. That’s OK, too.

But she has absolutely asserted herself as an independent voice in American politics, worth hearing out. I won’t always agree with her, but she’s earned my respect.

AnninCA on June 10, 2010 at 9:06 AM

Let’s be honest: The litmus test is one thing. Are you pro-abortion or are you not? Period, end of story. I would have passed their litmus test once upon a time (no longer tho), but they are such an insular group of bitter old crones that I’ve never felt I fit in there either. And on the flip side, even if you had common ground with them on other issues — like contraception, for instance — they would never listen to you if you happened to be pro-life because that’s all that matters. It’s all or nothing with these women and everything is driven by (negative) emotion. The fulfill the worst stereotypes about women being hysterical and shrill and driven by feelings instead of reason.

Count me among the many women who feel like Palin has given a voice to those of us who want to celebrate the power of women instead of getting mired down in identity politics and antiquated constructs of society as some sort of rigid patriarchy where women are oppressed as a matter of course. I’m not here to tell you that women don’t face different hurdles and higher standards at times than men do; Palin is a living example of that, I think. But whining about how unfair society is to you when you live here and there are women in Africa getting their genitals lopped off, or in Afghanistan getting stoned to death for being raped, or getting aborted in China simply for having an extra X chromosome seems pretty petty and self-indulgent to me.

NoLeftTurn on June 10, 2010 at 9:45 AM
