New White House excuse: Obama won’t talk to BP’s CEO because the board of directors is in charge
posted at 6:52 pm on June 9, 2010 by Allahpundit
Indescribably stupid. Between this and the “Sestak was only offered a nonpaying advisory position” nonsense, they’re not even trying to come up with good lies anymore.
Gibbs said Obama hasn’t called CEO Tony Hayward because — according to what Gibbs called the “executive structure of corporate governance” — the CEO alone isn’t the final word on company decisions, which are made by the board of directors.
“Look, the CEO is elected by the board. Anything that the CEO wants to do has to be approved by the board,” Gibbs said.
Later, he added: “I’m telling you, based on the corporate governance structure, in order to implement what — whatever you get from BP the CEO has to get clearance from the board to do. That’s — that’s the corporate governance structure is — is laid out.”
So did that mean that Obama had picked up the phone to talk to some of these powerful board members?
No.
My handle on corporate law is rusty, but doesn’t the CEO report to the board? Seems like he’d be an ideal conduit, short of a conference call, to communicating with them. But never mind that. As WaPo notes, Obama’s been meeting with CEOs of various stripes for 16 months. In fact, it was at a special meeting with financial CEOs in April 2009 that he uttered his immortally thuggish warming that “My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.” Is Gibbsy so short-handed to explain The One’s silence towards BP that he’s ready to pretend that never happened?
Tell you what. Let’s agree to let him slide on that if he’ll give us a straight answer on this Houston Chronicle report about the Dutch government offering to send oil-skimming tankers to the spill site early on — and being politely rebuffed. Wonders the Chronicle: “Even if, three days after the rig exploded, it seemed as if the Dutch equipment and expertise wasn’t needed, wouldn’t it have been better to accept it, to err on the side of having too many resources available rather than not enough?” That’s part of a pattern by now of slow-go on containment and I’ve yet to see a story with a good explanation for why boats and booms are being refused. How about it, media?
According to PPP, Obama’s approval rating has only really taken a hit from the spill among people who disapprove of him already — but that may be changing, especially with reports like the Chronicle’s now trickling out. In fact, Jesse Jackson Jr laid into him just this afternoon, albeit for his “messaging,” of course, not for anything truly damaging that he might have done wrong. For your viewing pleasure, here’s the Upright Citizens’ Brigade’s take on containment, BP-style. Content warning.

I’m a corporate governance expert, and Gibbs’ statement is dead WRONG.
CEO’s have much executive authority. That means they take many actions and make many decisions without getting approval from, or informing, anyone.
The company by-laws would prescribe the type of actions that the CEO needs board approval for. Outside of that, the executive has authority.

CEOs don’t need to contact the board every time they take a crap.
The CEO is in charge because he board trusts him to make most decisions on his own. Just like we elect Congress and the president, and then they make everyday decisions.
amerpundit on June 9, 2010 at 7:03 PM
Now I’m no President but I’m pretty sure the board of directors hires the CEO to make actual decisions for the company. But I could be wrong. I could also be wrong when I say I thought board directors meet every three months…something like quarterly.
Only a stupid academic, “cerebral thinker” believes decision by committee is a good idea.
And Obama hasn’t spoken to any of the board members, so why come up with some stupid excuse about the CEO “isn’t really in charge”. The issue is Obama has yet to speak with anyone in any position of authority at BP. How do you solve problems when you refuse to speak with the people responsible for solving the problem? Has anyone in the media asked him that?
Obama is guaranteeing to be a one-term President every day. I almost hope he doesn’t learn from any of this (like Clinton) and actually start you know, leading. Speaking of Clinton…you just know Hillary is gloating like a mofo at all this and is having to be physically restrained from saying “I told ya so”.
ramrants on June 9, 2010 at 7:04 PM
actually… and I freaking hate to do this… but he is right about one thing. BP can’t do anything due to a mandate via the exxon valdez that the Federal Government has to Okay it, such as the EPA. The Board of Directors (aka the shareholders) may not want to talk to Obama… but they can tell the CEO’s not to talk to him either or risk losing thier jobs.

BP Forced Clean-Up Workers To Sign Contract Forbidding Them From Talking With Media

The contract included a clause prohibiting them and their deckhands from making “news releases, marketing presentation, or any other public statements” while working on the clean-up. It also included an additional section titled “Agreement Regarding Proprietary and Confidential Information,” which states that workers cannot disclose “Data” gathered while on the job, including “plans,” “reports,” “information” and “etc.”

Dough, see if she can figure out why we received this e-mail. My husband already left to go help with the cleanup but perhaps since she works for BP she can either be enlightened or shed more light on this:
“Gulf Oil Spill Jobs.com
Update from Risk Management Disaster Service Environmental Inc.
Gulf Oil Spill Jobs Update – June 7
Helllo Ernest,
Here’s an update on your application to work to clean up the Gulf Oil Spill which you made on our website GulfOilSpillJobs.com on our website GulfOilSpillJobs.com with Risk Management Disaster Service Environmental, a contractor.
NOTE: if you have access to any type of oil skimmer, please immediately email skimmers@gulfoilspilljobs.com as we have a direct order from BP to obtain more skimmers ASAP.
We are still waiting for BP to instruct us where to deploy the people like you who are available to help with the oil spill cleanup. BP’s last communication to me dated Friday, June 4, 2010 at 7:53 AM:
“Once we know what the staging areas and distribution centers require we will determine where your offered equipment is a match to what is being requested. Thank you for this comprehensive list – I’m certain that we will have need of it soon – I just can’t place it today.
Regards,
(name removed)
BP America
GOM MC252 Incident Management Team
Critical Resource – Equipment Team Lead“
Rather than continue waiting on BP, we’ve also begun directly notifying county/parish presidents and local emergency personnel of your availability by providing them with lists of the cleanup resources we can immediately deploy. To date, local government has also waited on BP to initiate action, but at some point, local leaders won’t wait. At any time the weather patterns may change to force slicks onto shore areas, and at that point, local officials will demand quick action, or begin their own clean up effort and send the bill later to BP. Hurricane season is approaching.
I’m sure you are frustrated, since you may be seeing news coverage like this morning’s aerial footage of miles and miles of marsh areas in Louisiana that are covered in oil, with no protective boom in place to keep oil away, or boom that hasn’t been maintained and floated into shore, with no one working to clean up the shoreline.
News channels over the weekend were reporting tar balls on the beaches in the Florida panhandle, and one network drove miles of beaches to find only 12 BP-paid people on hand to clean up miles of shoreline, an impossible job with such limited manpower with only shovels in hand.
Other stories have featured local government leaders frustrated because there were not enough boats with skimmers to clean up the small spill areas that are breaking away from the main slicks and now were floating closer to their shores. The irony is we have boats ready to deploy.
At some point, someone will demand oil clean up in their area, perhaps if President Obama gets around to ordering a proactive effort to begin. With the proper information about you and the other workers we have in the hands of both BP and the local governments, we’ll be able to deploy once clean up efforts begin.
We’ll keep you advised.
Sincerely,
William Lombardo, President
Risk Management Disaster Service Environmental, Inc.

Top PR firm for BP tied to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel
By: Mark Hemingway
Commentary Staff Writer
05/30/10 2:42 PM EDT
Over at The Next Right, the’ve pieced together some interesting connections about the White House’s ties to British Petroleum, better known as the company currently polluting the Gulf of Mexico. We all know Obama was the biggest recipient of BP’s campaign cash in Washington, but it seems BP’s ties to the White House run even deeper.
According to The Next Right, PR firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner “helped BP plan and evaluate its successful re-branding campaign, focusing the company’s branding on energy solutions, including the development of solar and other renewable energy sources.”
The firm’s Stanley Greenberg is married to Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn. There was something of a flap last year when it was pointed out that White house Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel had been living in the couple’s Capitol Hill townhouse, resulting in a lot of questions about whether or not this arrangement violated congressional ethical guidelines.
Further, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee paid Greenberg’s firm some $500,000 in 2006 and 2008 while Emanuel was living with Greenberg, and Emanuel was even in charge of the DCCC during the 2006 election cycle.
And I’d be willing to bet that BP has paid Greenberg Quinlan Rosner a lot more than that. I doubt I’m the only one who thinks that BP’s relationship with the White House might be a little too close for comfort.
Read more at the Washington Examiner.
