Great news for Democrats: Senate candidate facing obscenity-offense felony

posted at 2:30 pm on June 9, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Dave Weigel called Alvin Greene the “the kind of opponent candidates dream about,” but he didn’t know the half of it.  Jim Geraghty noted that the new Democratic nominee to run against conservative stalwart Sen. Jim DeMint in South Carolina hadn’t filed any paperwork with the FEC on fundraising, but perhaps he just didn’t want to get in any more trouble with the law than Greene already faces.  The Democratic nominee  isn’t just “wholly unserious” — the AP reports that he’s been charged with a felony obscenity offense that could get him five years in prison:

South Carolina’s surprise Democratic nominee to challenge U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint is facing a pending felony charge.

Court records show 32-year-old Alvin Greene was arrested in November and charged with showing obscene Internet photos to a University of South Carolina student. The felony charge carries up to five years in prison. …

Records indicate Greene showed photos to a woman and talked about going to her room at a university dorm.

Um … wow.  Just … wow.  The Associated Press had better be sure of its reporting, because if this turns out to be another Alvin Greene, they’ll have to have their checkbooks handy.  They did call and ask for a response, but Greene told them he had no comment.

I guess this eliminates the whole family-values campaign, then?

Assuming this is true, Greene hasn’t yet been charged, but he had to put up a bond to get his release after the arrest.  Didn’t the state Democratic party do any sort of background check on their candidates?  This is exactly the kind of scandal that can not only eliminate any chance of beating DeMint but will also resonate through the down-ticket races as well.

Again, assuming this is true, does the party have any way to get Greene off of the ballot?  He won an open primary, which unlike conventions, are usually the final word in nominations.  I’m sure that South Carolina Democrats are frantically checking the answer to that question right now.

Blowback

This just in: DU is blaming Diebold and Republican crossover voters.

Probably thought that the felony charges were a RECOMMENDATION for higher office. As for background checks, my guess is that Dem’s don’t want to do them anymore. Out of sight, out of mind. Besides, the White House doesn’t do ‘em, so why should they at the state party level?

GarandFan on June 9, 2010 at 3:53 PM

South Carolina just keeps on giving.

indy8 on June 9, 2010 at 3:55 PM

Those photos must’ve been really obscene.

The Democrat Tent has room for more felons? WOW!

TN Mom on June 9, 2010 at 3:56 PM

Wow, you can get jail time for showing a photo of something to another adult? Is this a South Carolina backwards state thing or do other states have this same law? That is damn scary.

thphilli on June 9, 2010 at 3:08 PM

I would have to believe there was more to it than “showing a picture”. In any event, we still have values in the South. We like it that way and we could care less if you find moral values “scary”.

Oopsy.

Maybe Chris Hansen has him on tape..;-)

Given what happened in that same state to Nikki Halley, and this guy’s 13 years of military service, he does deserve some benefit of the doubt.

pedestrian on June 9, 2010 at 3:48 PM

Some, but his military service also works against him. According to ABC, he was involuntarily forced out, though there’s no explanation on why.

Dude looks like he could be Samwell’s cousin.

Hey, he’s just starting out as he means to go on… they are coming in pre-felonized.

rickyricardo on June 9, 2010 at 3:23 PM

I’m glad you brought that up since the ABC News link has the headline “Alvin Greene Shocks South Carolina Democrats with Primary Win, Felony Charge” and an embedded video of Nikki Haley. Nobody can confuse Nikki Haley and Alvin Greene, can they?
.
So why embed a Nikki Haley image in an Alvin Greene Felony Charge story?

ExpressoBold on June 9, 2010 at 4:08 PM

Honest question; what could be so obscene as to warrant 5 years in prison? (I assume it’s not child porn, because that would bring different accusations)

Or, what is it with South Carolina?

Free Constitution

Maybe a pic of Strom Thurmond in a vulnerable pose?

honsy on June 9, 2010 at 4:10 PM

Didn’t the state Democratic party do any sort of background check on their candidates?

Is it really necessary? Nothing a good cry and apology on television won’t fix.

Caper29 on June 9, 2010 at 4:16 PM

Background check?

Harvard and Columbia can’t hide his grades if he never attended.

Alvin Purple was a more successful color, it would appear.

If you want to have some fun, start listing off the number of obscene things that DeMint could do and STILL win this race in a walk.

DaMav on June 9, 2010 at 4:49 PM

Why bother. DeMint isn’t going to lose. The democrats should save their money in SC and help Blanche Lincoln.

antisocial on June 9, 2010 at 5:31 PM

Something like this happened to a Republican Senate candidate in Illinois, and that’s how Barack Obama got elected to the Senate. The rest is history.

Does this mean DeMint will be our next President?

I’ve sat on a few boards that sent soldiers home it is usually drugs, or misconduct of some sort say failure to adapt, or several Article 15′s (minor but punishable crimes)or even not passing your PT test and being fat.

LincolntheHun on June 9, 2010 at 5:36 PM

Opps

“I graduated from the University of South Carolina,” he said. “We have more unemployment than any other time in South Carolina history. Hold on, I have another beep.”

Greene’s candidacy has raised suspicions that he may have been induced to run by Republican operatives in order to sow dissension in the Democratic ranks. It’s not uncommon in South Carolina for Republicans to recruit African-American challengers to run against white frontrunners in Democratic primaries in the hope of drumming up racial tensions. (Greene is black.)

huh ?

Rising star in the Dem Party with a resume enhancer like that. It won’t be long before Bill pays him a visit for some pointers.

Sporty1946 on June 9, 2010 at 6:17 PM

We got a republican candidate for House District 15 who spent over 5 years in federal prison. He has multiple arrests and convictions. I believe the only elected office he can hold is, as a representative in the House.
No one knew about it before the primary. The seat he is running for is as safe as Rangel or Clyburn’s.

What Sterom Thurmond & Helen Thomas did in private should not be a subject for public gossip and speculation.

Red State State of Mind on June 9, 2010 at 7:24 PM

What’s the big eff’ing deal? This just means Greene has the requisite moral values required to be a member of the liberal political class, right? Do we expect anything less at this point? Apparently the progressives don’t. Heck, he’ll probably win some kind of vanguard award for this crap-o-la.

MsUnderestimated on June 9, 2010 at 7:37 PM

For all you broad brushing, Northern culturists, please know that this is not a “SOUTHERN” thing.

This is a “Black Race Profiteer Machine” thing.

For at least the last twenty years, lower-class blacks all over the United States have been encouraged to become MORE separate, more different in behavior, more divorced from mainstream norms with regard to speech, manner and dress.

This tragic cartooning of legitimate cultural heritage by an entertainment industry only infantilizes its acolytes—witness the exaggerated clumsy body language, clown pants, and goofy hats worn sideways.

Children do not engage in politics, and so one of the saddest aspects of black pop culture is the wholesale depoliticization of the black population, especially young adults, as aided by race profiteers like James Clyburn and Jesse Jackeson, two of our own from South Carolina. So this scum, Greene, is just par.
Another sad consequence of this surrender of politics to pop culture has been a dearth of LOGICAL black leadership at a time when it could not be more needed to TRULY UNITE this land so that we can function as one to solve VERY REAL, VERY FRIGHTENING PROBLEMS on the horizon as “AMERICANS”, ALL.

So, trolls, save your ballad of “ain’t that just like retarded Southerners?”.

To all those who would vote for him, this Greene fella is a friggin’ rock star.

I’m sure that South Carolina Democrats are frantically checking the answer to that question right now.

They’ll find a way.

Remember how Lautenberg got on the ticket?

BacaDog on June 9, 2010 at 2:43 PM

Interesting that you should recall that episode (among a few others) of NJ Democrat electioneering. From the AP story:

Alvin Greene, 32, didn’t raise any money. He didn’t have a website. …

If I may ask, does not the US Constitution require members of the US Senate to have attained at least the green, young age of 35 years? Sounds like SC Democrats many have themselves a semi-truck-sized “loophole.”

ConScribe on June 9, 2010 at 10:13 PM

Senators have to be at least 30 years old.

You guy’s are so silly. Haven’t you learned anything by now? It’s Bush’s fault.

ChiTownPizza on June 10, 2010 at 3:13 AM

Talk about Dems vetting their candidates what kind of vetting did they do on President Obama’s close associates and political friends in Chicago? Especially a Mr Rezko.

Herb on June 10, 2010 at 8:58 AM

This is why I won’t take my family to protests where Dems will be present. They are violent, unpredictable, and the news media completely ignores them when they get out of hand.

jediwebdude on June 10, 2010 at 10:32 AM

Obama can’t support this guy, can’t support Sleestack, can’t support Landrieu looks like he might be lonely this fall.

jpmn on June 10, 2010 at 1:05 PM

It could be the girl was still 17? I haven’t seen a great deal of detail about the charge. If merely sending a naughty picture amongst at least 18 y.o.’s is a felony, there are scads of possible felons out there.

As a SC conservative, I don’t think the Repub’s will be hearing quite as much from Dem’s about Nikki Haley’s accusations. There was no concrete proof with hers. Apparently there is strong evidence with Greene to secure an arrest warrant.

Dear God (or Higher Power for other believers),
Thank you for Alvin Greene. :)
Please bless us with more Dem’s like this on the national level.

Wow, looks like troubled times ahead for the Democrat party. What’s that German word for enjoying all this?

carbon_footprint on June 10, 2010 at 4:03 PM

James Clyburn, Democrat Congressman from South Carolina, is now saying that this man was a Republican plant. Clyburn is a nut.

I will have to admit that South Carolina politics this year have been something the entire country has been interested. I just wonder if Mark Sanford is going to move to Argentina and live with his mistress after he leaves office.
