Video: Obama can’t explain why he hasn’t spoken to BP’s CEO

posted at 3:35 pm on June 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

More fun from this morning’s exercise in ass-kicking on “Today”. Skip ahead to 2:36 for the key bit. The One’s logic, such as it is, is that it’s not worth talking to Tony Hayward because he’ll only end up giving him the runaround — a curious position coming from a guy who campaigned on the virtues of “dialogue” and who’s been locked in halting negotiations with Iran for fully 16 months. Even Lauer is openly incredulous. Captain Kickass has nothing to say to a guy who potentially holds the fate of his presidency in his hands? Even after yesterday’s hair-raising Times piece claiming that BP’s effort to cut the leaking riser may have actually increased the flow of oil many times over? I thought this was supposed to be the new, improved, “engaged” Hopenchange.

That’s the second half of the clip. I gave you an extra two minutes up front so that you can watch O once again throw himself a pity party over the “24-hour news cycle” (TV critic David Zurawik is pounding him for that today) before insisting that none of his critics seem to have any suggestions for what he should have done differently in the early days of the spill. Don’t they, though? Byron York highlights this bit from a recent NYT piece:

For example, it took the Department of Homeland Security more than a week to classify the spill as an event calling for the highest level of federal action. And when state officials in Louisiana tried over and over to win federal permission to build sand barriers to protect fragile coastal wetlands from the oil, they got nowhere. “For three weeks, as the giant slick crept closer to shore,” the Times reports, “officials from the White House, Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Environmental Protection Agency debated the best approach.”

And here’s something hot off the presses from ABC:

A leading scientist following the BP oil spill said Monday that if the company or the government had made realistic estimates about the amounts flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, they could have had sufficient tanker space ready on the surface to hold the crude being pumped up through a make-shift collection device…

In an extensive interview with ABC News chief investigative correspondent Brian Ross, [oceanographer Ian] MacDonald examined underwater video from the early days of the disaster and concluded that BP had been underestimating the scope of the spill, with little objection from the U.S Coast Guard or other federal agencies

Coast Guard officials told ABC News that BP refused to allow them to release the more startling images, arguing they were proprietary. But at the time, the agency was doing little to convey to the world what the images were showing. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mary Landry was sticking with estimates, calculated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which put the spill’s size at about 5,000 barrels a day for several weeks.

Don’t forget either that Bobby Jindal’s request for hard booms on May 2 was still woefully undermet three weeks later. Exit question: Another two or three sanitized photo ops of Obama inspecting tar balls on the beach should smooth this over, no?

Obama can’t explain why he hasn’t spoken to BP’s CEO

And what were you expecting….?

“For three weeks, as the giant slick crept closer to shore,” the Times reports, “officials from the White House, Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Thunderbirds, Romulans, Ghandi, Cindy Sheehans’ attorney and the Environmental Protection Agency debated the best approach.”

The illusion is beginning to fray around the edges and its unraveling.

The news media serves up questions that if Obama was prepared could be answered. What people are beginning to see is the real Obama not the illusion created during his campaign.

Skandia Recluse on June 8, 2010 at 3:47 PM

As a Louisiana resident; I want all of the above!

I want Obama to order BP to write a check to test almost every hair brained scheme for cleaning up the coast that comes along.

Someone said that straw may work; givem a check for $250 to prove their point.
Someone from the Saudi area said they have some ships that can siphon up the oil from any depth; cut them a check and lets see.
Jindal wants sand burms; order the EPA to stuff it and tell BP to cut the check to LA and git R done.

ALL OF THE ABOVE!

and why didn’t he ask him about Sestak. Better; Mr. President, isn’t the Sestak and Romanoff scandals the same as what Blago is accused of?

This is unforgivable. There is absolutely no justification for Obama not handling this.

Now the underwater plumb has been confirmed to be from the BP spill.

Here we go again with the same old BS where none of his critics offered up any alternatives….despite many of his critics offering up numerous alternatives. There’s also hundreds, if not thousands, of fisherman with boats ready to be sent out to get up oil, but they’ve no instructions or equipment on how to do so.

WitchDoctor on June 8, 2010 at 3:59 PM

Bambam didn’t call the BP CEO because he has zero experience as an executive. A real executive would have instinctively known to call up and find out how he could help solve them problem. Obama immediately goes into thinking about yelling at the guy, like a baby, and not actually talking to the person in charge of fixed the problem to find out what the issues are and how the solution can be expedited.

When Obama does call, it will be to discuss campaign contributions.

I’m literally dumbstruck at Obama’s hapless leadership in this catastrophe. Had he rehearsed for weeks with a “Rocky III” like focus, he couldn’t have done a better job at screwing this up. And what makes it so sad is to see those good people down on Venice Isle and other coastal communities so hopeless. For God’s sake, Man, people’s lives are on the line…their careers…the only way of life they’ve ever known….and there sits Mr. Thinskin deflecting, trying desperately to salvage his wilting legacy and cover up his lame ass.

Let me be absolutely clear. Karl Rove tricked me into running for president. Karl Rove told me that I was auditioning for American Idol Political Edition. I thought I was going to get a record deal for all my speeches. Instead, I get a Fox News with a video camera going 24 hrs a day showing leaking oil and a tanking economy. North Korea decides to act up, and the dang Iranians are refusing to unclench their fists. I am talking to experts trying to figure out whose ass to kick, and I am pretty sure I need to kick George W Bush’s ass because he got Karl Rove to trick me into running for president so that people would miss him. Well, let me tell you, as soon as I figure out which of the 57 states is Texas… ummmm… uhhhh… because I care. And… ummm… actions matter more than words… and… uhhh … We are the change we have been waiting for! Now quit asking me all these damn questions about the oil spill and let me eat my waffle.

ted c on June 8, 2010 at 4:25 PM

I’m literally dumbstruck at Obama’s hapless leadership in this catastrophe. Had he rehearsed for weeks with a “Rocky III” like focus, he couldn’t have done a better job at screwing this up. And what makes it so sad is to see those good people down on Venice Isle and other coastal communities so hopeless. For God’s sake, Man, people’s lives are on the line…their careers…the only way of life they’ve ever known….and there sits Mr. Thinskin deflecting, trying desperately to salvage his wilting legacy and cover up his lame ass.

Obama said he had been SINGULARLY FOCUSED ON STOPPING THE LEAK. Obama said that BP WOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEAN UP AND PAYMENT OF LOSS CLAIMS.

I want to see angry fisherman with pitchforks and torches chasing Captain Kickass down the beach and back to his plane.

First pants him.

Kaptain Kickass: “Holyschmolly, the world crisis monitor says there is not enough of my face time on the tube.”

(Change into seudo-leotard)
(shouting at the top of his lungs)

“Kaptain Kickass to the rescue! I DO hope my other SuperHero friends will be here soon.”

It`s Bush`s fault he hasn`t spoke to the CEO yet.

ThePrez on June 8, 2010 at 4:26 PM

Is he referring to the 24-hr news cycle that helped The Big O coast across the finish line? THAT 24-hr news cycle?

Time will fly. It always does. I keep telling myself that when I think about 2012.

And I didn’t say it on the Helen Thomas thread but that line about the WH journalists not being able to say “Liar” to Obama or Gibbs or anyone in the administration is bull. We are NOT A MONARCHY. When it is the truth- say it loud, say it proud (but have the truth on your side first)

So, Captain Kickass- fulfill Gov Jindal’s requests. Try the hay. Try anything but fingering tarballs. Fingering tarballs doesn’t work.

journeyintothewhirlwind on June 8, 2010 at 4:28 PM

I have kind of liked the “O’Bummer” moniker, as well as “Hope’n'Changer in Chief”, but Captain Kickass is strangely fitting. Nice job, Allah.

Also, he’s been playing golf so much lately, I wonder what his handicap is on the course. We already know what his handicap is off the course.

Opps, hit wrong button!

Obama NEVER said a word about protection of the wetlands or PREVENTION because that was never in their plans.

Absolutely despicable and you have to wonder why considering the ecological damage that can completely kill of that area for decades.

Texas Gal on June 8, 2010 at 4:30 PM

Obozo is still getting a big pass from the MSM. Remember Bush & Katrina? Some idiots were saying Bush actually caused the hurricane. Haven’t seen ANYTHING even close to that kind of criticism for Obozo with this disaster.

SWChance on June 8, 2010 at 4:32 PM

Good grief, this man is worthless. Entirely worthless.

We are so badly led.

Edouard

We are not badly led. We are not led at all. We are badly pushed.

Their plan B (Kaptain Kickass) backfired on them, it is to the plan C, D, E in the backrooms. We will know something is afoot when Bill Clinton is dining in the WH one of these days.

Sir Napsalot on June 8, 2010 at 4:35 PM

they could have had sufficient tanker space ready on the surface to hold the crude being pumped up through a make-shift collection device

Why are there not 2 supertankers sucking up the oil right now? WTF are these people doing?!

ROCnPhilly on June 8, 2010 at 4:36 PM

Don’t think, evade.
Don’t act, panic.
Don’t lead, blame.
Don’t call, dissimulate.

Barack Obama in the highest office in the land, parley-voo?
Barack Obama in the highest office in the land, parley-voo?
He can sink the economy and dither on spewing oil a great deal
But taking any responsibly for anything to him just does not appeal
He has no class and a form like the back of a hack
When he whines and cries the tears run down his back
If he would just take responsibility sometime somewhere
The MSM frogs would probably give him the Croix-de-Guerre
Hinky, dinky, parley-voo
