Video: Obama can’t explain why he hasn’t spoken to BP’s CEO

posted at 3:35 pm on June 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

More fun from this morning’s exercise in ass-kicking on “Today”. Skip ahead to 2:36 for the key bit. The One’s logic, such as it is, is that it’s not worth talking to Tony Hayward because he’ll only end up giving him the runaround — a curious position coming from a guy who campaigned on the virtues of “dialogue” and who’s been locked in halting negotiations with Iran for fully 16 months. Even Lauer is openly incredulous. Captain Kickass has nothing to say to a guy who potentially holds the fate of his presidency in his hands? Even after yesterday’s hair-raising Times piece claiming that BP’s effort to cut the leaking riser may have actually increased the flow of oil many times over? I thought this was supposed to be the new, improved, “engaged” Hopenchange.

That’s the second half of the clip. I gave you an extra two minutes up front so that you can watch O once again throw himself a pity party over the “24-hour news cycle” (TV critic David Zurawik is pounding him for that today) before insisting that none of his critics seem to have any suggestions for what he should have done differently in the early days of the spill. Don’t they, though? Byron York highlights this bit from a recent NYT piece:

For example, it took the Department of Homeland Security more than a week to classify the spill as an event calling for the highest level of federal action. And when state officials in Louisiana tried over and over to win federal permission to build sand barriers to protect fragile coastal wetlands from the oil, they got nowhere. “For three weeks, as the giant slick crept closer to shore,” the Times reports, “officials from the White House, Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Environmental Protection Agency debated the best approach.”

And here’s something hot off the presses from ABC:

A leading scientist following the BP oil spill said Monday that if the company or the government had made realistic estimates about the amounts flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, they could have had sufficient tanker space ready on the surface to hold the crude being pumped up through a make-shift collection device…

In an extensive interview with ABC News chief investigative correspondent Brian Ross, [oceanographer Ian] MacDonald examined underwater video from the early days of the disaster and concluded that BP had been underestimating the scope of the spill, with little objection from the U.S Coast Guard or other federal agencies

Coast Guard officials told ABC News that BP refused to allow them to release the more startling images, arguing they were proprietary. But at the time, the agency was doing little to convey to the world what the images were showing. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mary Landry was sticking with estimates, calculated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which put the spill’s size at about 5,000 barrels a day for several weeks.

Don’t forget either that Bobby Jindal’s request for hard booms on May 2 was still woefully undermet three weeks later. Exit question: Another two or three sanitized photo ops of Obama inspecting tar balls on the beach should smooth this over, no?

But seriously, Obama is laughable. It’s as if we’re watching Richard Simmons trying to get red.

Foolish, incompetent and suicidal arrogance! He provides an excuse why he has never spoken and why he will not speak to the CEO of BP. Incredible!

To really take charge and to show the world that he truly means to do so he needs to contact the BP CEO NOW!

Sure he’s going to take much deserved heat for waiting nearly two months to do so. BUT IT NEEDS TO BE DONE!

What concerns me the most about this interview is that I see no fiber in his being to pull up some integrity to do so.

He’s going to remain a armchair quarterback until this whole thing is over. Then he’ll be in charge to kiss some ***.

shick on June 8, 2010 at 4:47 PM

Obama doesn’t care. How do I know for certain? Well, since the Celtics are in the NBA finals Boston Sports Talk Radio playes Obama breaking down the NBA finals and all the players strengths and weaknesses. If you want to hear Obama speaking about something he loves and cares about, find the audio and listen to it. Then keep it in mind whenever you hear him speak about anything.

The guy doesn’t care. Why? Is it because he doesn’t care about the country? Just that region? Or, is it because he wants the damage to be great enough that America never drills offshore again? Is there another reason? Why? Why? Why?

Great point. It’s possible that the safety record award might not have happened and therefore the explosing might not have happened. But my thought is admittedly pure speculation.

shick on June 8, 2010 at 4:50 PM

I’m gratified that the ugly truth about Obama is coming out. I’m sorry that it has taken the Fort Hood Massacre, two other terrorist incidents that failed only by the grace of God, and now this devastating ecological disaster to reveal the man’s incompetence and deep character faults.

Someone has written that America can relatively easily get over the damage done by Barack Obama; but an electorate that is so defective in knowledge and virtue to elect him – that’s another story.

That makes for a good argument for us not to listen to Obama. He’ll just say all the right things too.

drunyan8315 on June 8, 2010 at 4:57 PM

Avoidance of conflict. The administration (Gibbs) only came down on Helen Thomas after she was gone and Obama can only yak about the BP boss when he knows he won’t meet him. If someone Obama insulted got to him. popped him one and bloodied his nose, our big brave president would fall like a girl and sob like a baby.

I don’t get it – this douche-nozzle’s whole career has been based on his ability to talk and persuade people to see the light. Now when a conversation about the country’s biggest environmental disaster is needed, Captain Finger-Pointer-in-Chief says talking is a waste of time. Unbelievable!

This boy-king needs to be dragged out of office now before he destroys what’s left of the country. This lying sack of crap is making the Peanut Guy look like a Statesman now. Obumbles lies without batting an eye, and expects the usual lapdog media treatment. We really need some strong voices calling him on his outright lies and his dereliction of duty.

Willie on June 8, 2010 at 5:49 PM

Another excerpt from today’s Sarah Palin post on FB who can kick HIS ass and SHE wants HIM to call HER to fix it. She’s itching to get hands-on with this oil spill. And it’s not even her Katrina!:

My experience (though, granted, I got the message loud and clear during the campaign that my executive experience managing the fastest growing community in the state, and then running the largest state in the union, was nothing compared to the experiences of a community organizer) showed me how government officials and oil execs could scratch each others’ backs to the detriment of the public, and it made me ill. I ran for Governor to fight such practices. So, as a former chief executive, I humbly offer this advice to the President: you must verify. That means you must meet with Hayward. Demand answers.

In the interview today, the President said: “I don’t sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar. We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick.”

Please, sir, for the sake of the Gulf residents, reach out to experts who have experience holding oil companies accountable. I suggested a few weeks ago that you start with Alaska’s Department of Natural Resources, led by Commissioner Tom Irwin. Having worked with Tom and his DNR and AGIA team led by Marty Rutherford, I can vouch for their integrity and expertise in dealing with Big Oil and overseeing its developments. We’ve all lived and worked through the Exxon-Valdez spill. They can help you. Give them a call. Or, what the heck, give me a call.

And, finally, Mr. President, please do not punish the American public with any new energy tax in response to this tragedy. Just because BP and federal regulators screwed up that doesn’t mean the rest of us should get punished with higher taxes at the pump and attached to everything petroleum products touch.

Before it magically disappeared in the summer of 2008, O’bama’s wiki entry noted that his private prep school in Honolulu, Punahou, practiced the Hawaiian school tradition known as “Kill Haole Day”, which I myself witnessed as a resident there in the 1960s. On the last day of school, all the white kids would get beaten up solely based on race.

Knowing O’bama, he probably paid one of the other kids to beat the white kids up for him.

Obowma is the Ping Pong President

When he reads the teleprompters he looks like he is watching a ping pong game: looks left, looks right, looks left, looks right…..

He also is thin skinned and full of hot air;), no substance and a thin shell.

Finally, he operates in different shades of yellow and RED.

dthorny on June 8, 2010 at 10:13 PM

Blame, blame, blame.

What a damned liar.

And Matt’s a stupidass, too.

So when he asked if there was anything he could’ve done differently, he was met with silence? He must’ve been talking to those incompetent idiots that he hired, like his Nobel-prize winning dummy, the energy secretary, because everywhere I look, there’s alternatives and answers. Then he says that things aren’t so bad; it’s that darned 24 hour news cycle, again. Maybe if Dumbo the Dalai Obama had watched the damned news for a few minutes, he would be up to speed on the situation. Maybe if he read something other than Puff the Magic Dragon and the NY Slimes, he’d know about companies that are making booms, but aren’t finding buyers. However, his solution remains the same: sit back and stop watching the news.

Then, we have his lame brain of an interviewer, who wants to blame BP, and try to get Obama to say they lied to him about the severity of the situation. Sounds like someone wanting to cast blame, to me, and this is right on the heels of his boring speech about not doing that, isn’t it? He just couldn’t bring himself to say that it could possibly be the fault of an incompetent president, aggravated by an incompetent regime. Maybe if Matty-Boy had looked at something other than his crew of liars, he might have read a little something about Obama knowing from the start how bad it was, and all the actions Obama didn’t take, that he could’ve (like having booms ready, controlled burns, chemical disbursement agents on hand, etc.) and should’ve. However, that would mean having to eat crow, himself, because that would force him to admit his god is a worthless piece of sh-t.

What does this ‘man’ have to do to have impeachment papers filed against him? He’s actively working to undermine national defense in many ways, destroying the US economy, and living up to his vocalized contempt for the Constitution. What does he have to do? Get caught sodomizing a young hispanic boy, with a crack pipe in his mouth? If that happened, the gay “rights” lobby would run to his defense, aided by NAMBLA, and the ACLU would say he’s sick, because he’s still suffering the delayed effects of his life as a drug-scum.

Virus-X on June 8, 2010 at 10:26 PM

You can tell, just by listening to Obama, how much contempt he has for the CEO of BP. Not because of the spill, or anything resembling that, a contempt that comes from ignorance. “I know what he’s going to say to me.”??? No he doesn’t and the CEO of BP knows he’s dealing with an inexperienced community organizer who is going to be of little help.

Just once, I would have liked to have seen Obama say he was sending down a team of emergency managers to find out what they can do to help and expedite that. Just once, I like to see Obama call the CEO of BP and ask, “What can we do to help.” Instead, the arogant one says he’s listening to experts so he knows whose ass to kick. Brilliant, just brilliant.

bflat879 on June 8, 2010 at 10:32 PM

Like I said, when you are incompenent every day is an adventure. But even so, why say “No” to the booms and sand barriers? If they work you are a hero and if they fail you tried everything anyone suggested. Even if you just know they won’t work, don’t you owe the piblic a detailed explanation of why they won’t work? What is the upside to silent? It just makes you look clueless.

Fred 2 on June 8, 2010 at 10:36 PM

He’s not talking to him because that’s his M.O. It’s the icing of Netanyahu routine.

There’s nothing wrong with using the actual presence of the president sparingly in negotiations. But it’s not like he knows how to do that, as the Olympic negotiations demonstrated. And these aren’t negotiations, it’s crisis management, which is a completely different situation.

All Obama knows is to attempt to do the Chigago tough guy routine, and he’s laughable in that role.

His only anger is that he isn’t killing America’s middle class class fast enough to create slaves to the State.

Hey Obamalinsky, I hate to tell ya this but yer Progressive Socialism is dying on the vine. The Founding Fathers are working from beyond the grave to kick YOUR communist ass…

1-Where’s FEMA?
2-Are they using Kevin Costner’s centrifuges? All the news I get are from back when he landed and were being tested. Even people that ask q’s in Yahoo! Answers are asking the same crap. I can’t find anything on the search engines.

Maybe that’s how they are collecting the oil and put them in the barges; BP just won’t tell us it’s thanx to Costner, as is holding back tons of more info.

The public doesn’t give a damn about anger. Do that later. We want ACTION to prevent that oil from reaching shore. Don’t give us that BS that you’ve evaluated everything. They need another ship to catch the oil they are getting now. Why wasn’t this anticipated? Nothing is being done to prevent and clean up as it could be done. Obama’s motto “Don’t do something–Stand there!” (Exit stage right scowling–TOTUS)

At what point does it become the consensus that inaction on this spill has caused far more damage — in not only environmental costs but human lives lost — than whatever faltering took place by the feds in Hurricane Katrina?
