Of course: Reuters cropping flotilla passengers’ weapons out of photos; Update: LGF broke the story

posted at 7:19 pm on June 7, 2010 by Allahpundit

There’s something soooooo familiar about this.

You may remember during the second Lebanese war Reuters was caught making news pictures look worse than they were with a little touch of Photo Shop…

Reuters is now doctoring its pictures from the violence aboard the Guerrilla Flotilla. For example, this picture appeared in a Turkish Newspaper. The guy on the ground in green is one of the Israeli commandos. Notice the red circle I added. It shows one of the terrorists on the flotilla boat holding a knife…

Now here is the same picture as first released by Reuters. Notice that they cropped out the the terrorist’s knife?

Follow the link and check out Sammy Benoit’s examples. And yes, that’s “examples,” as in plural: Just like when we went through this the first time with Reuters, it’s not a one-off mistake. The most depressing part is that one of the uncropped photos that Sammy used comes from Hurriyet, which is a Turkish newspaper, thus proving that even in Erdogan’s own backyard you’re apt to get a fairer take on what happened on the flotilla than from certain U.S. outfits.

The Daily Mail has more flotilla pics, including one of an IDF soldier bleeding heavily from the head after being attacked. And no wonder: The IDF’s verified that jihadis linked to Al Qaeda, Islamic Jihad, and Hamas itself were aboard. As for our friends the Turks, who’ve allegedly been acting out of love for the Palestinian people, the Palestinian Authority is now sufficiently alarmed by their Hamas boosterism that they’re venting to the Jerusalem Post about it. Your exit quotation, courtesy of our NATO partner in peace:

Asked about those claims at a joint news conference with Syria President Bashar al-Assad Monday, Mr. Erdogan said of Israel: “They lie like a lie-making machine, they always do it.” He also described Hamas as “resistance fighters,” and said Hamas, which rules Gaza, had agreed for Ankara to mediate in talks with its rival Fatah, which runs the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. Mr. Assad was in Istanbul for a Eurasian summit that starts Tuesday. Iran President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Russia Prime Minister Vladimir Putin are also due to attend.

Mr. Erdogan continued to raise the temperature of Turkey’s dispute with Israel over the weekend. In a speech in Bursa, a city about 80 kilometers south of Istanbul, Mr. Erdogan said the world now perceives “the swastika and the Star of David together.”

Update (6/8): It seems I’m “scum,” a “thief,” and a “dishonest dirtbag” because I thought Sammy Benoit had found the initial photo of Reuters cropping out weapons. Turns out it was Charles Johnson at LGF who broke the story; Sammy’s post only mentioned him in connection with the second photo. So here’s the official correction from a scummy dirtbag thief.

I mean this as a serious question, not snark. If you look at the pictures on the Mail, isn’t that guy a bit chubby for a commando? Also, they don’t really seem to be in uniform.

These weren’t the kind of commandos that the IDF would send behind enemy lines in Lebanon, to take out a snipers nest. These were just troops who inspected ships for contraband. Normally very boring stuff.

Isn’t there some legal penalty for deceptively atlering a picture in a news story other than public opinion? I’m thinking $10k fine and a published retraction for a first offence going up to a million dollars per incident for repeated offenses. In short, they ought to be driven out of business.

I know, I know, freedom of the press and of speech. But those calling them liars ought to have a louder voice than those lying, somehow.

It is one thing to have an opinion or different views, but to know that there was a weapon in a picture and then to delete it goes beyond that. Does Reuters get money via advertisers or just buyers of their product? Either way, contact and confront those with evidence of the malfesance and reduce Reuters to the fringe.

I don’t think so at all. I have known quite a few Army Spec Ops guys and they are usually a little older and sometimes a little more filled out then your average 20 year old. The one thing they all had in common was their fitness level was outstanding. I am not suggesting they are fat, but grown men.

I have decided the next time I have to get into this argument, I am going to just start throwing things randomly at whoever I am talking to, wadded up paper , pennies, whatever I have handy. Just every sentence or so, toss one at them and completely ignore any reply they give to me. Act like it never happened until they get really aggravated and then tell them, “it isn`t really hurting you when I throw pennies at your head, it is just an inconvenience” . They most likely will still miss the point but it will be fun, maybe a “What right do you have to be standing in the way of the things I am throwing?” Maybe that stupid of a question will wake them up.

bluemarlin on June 7, 2010 at 4:47 PM

cableguy615 on June 7, 2010 at 8:52 PM

Okay, so hypothetically….

The trajectory suggests a war, I think, so the question becomes where the lines will be drawn. NATO is more or less pointless, as Turkey proves and much of Europe’s impotence in the face of its growing Arab population reinforces. China and Russia could go either way, depending on which side they expect to be the winner, but I imagine they’d commit more support to the bad guys than if they picked the good guys. So that means most of the Middle East + Iran and probably + Turkey and maybe even the Norks and some of Latin America versus…. who? Israel? Europe’s not going to help her out, that’s for d*mn sure, and honestly, by the time the Dems are finished with our economy, I don’t know if the US will be able to help out even if we have a leadership that wants to. So that’s Israel by itself? Dang. Ramp up the combat training, Bibi. Your boys and girls are going to need it.

I’ll do everything I can to avoid this outcome, however, as I’m sure most of you will. It may be fiction, but if you ever want a fantastic book, read Exodus by Leon Uris. Then, read the historical background of the novel, and you’ll have a whole new appreciation of modern Israel, and how a national pride that’s lain dormant for decades is reemerging at exactly the time it’s most needed.

Lord, protect us.

I glanced at the LGF link at some point; someone (maybe you) also sent me a link to the report at Israel National News, which doesn’t credit anyone else and made me wonder if *they* had broken the story. I finally ended up writing something about it when news got slow yesterday afternoon and someone sent me Sammy’s post, which I thought laid out the whole thing nicely. My hat’s off to you, Allah, for manning up.

Now, will Charles Johnson do likewise and accept your apology, along with the good faith in which it was made? Will he ever again accept in good faith the opinions of anyone who disagrees with his?

Will he ever get around to seeing a brain surgeon about getting that tumor removed?

I have no other idea why someone who was once so perceptive on so many levels descended so quickly into madness. It’s got to be medical.

I would never intentionally deny credit to someone who deserves it, especially in a case like this where the guy’s done a righteous thing by pointing out media bias towards Israel.

AP’s right, this is a big story and truly a scoop. Cropping is one thing, but cropping out something that completely changes the message of a photo is wrong. He even had a photo that he adjusted the brightness on and it looked like there was another soldier lying alongside the main guy in the center and he was clearly injured as well.

Yes. At least he’s still got that going for him. There may be hope yet.

Credit where credit is due and all that is fine, but when the initial response is to lash out at people before they’ve even been given them a chance to explain or apologize is not just cowardly, it’s downright rude and childish. Good for him for exposing the fraud, but shame on him for being a bully.

Someone call the Wahmbulance for poor old Chucky of LGF for not getting some sort of “credit”.. He sure does need validation in his life, even if it’s not only posted by his resident minions.. jeez..
