White House statement: The Gaza blockade is unsustainable

posted at 9:11 pm on June 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

We saw it coming last night, and now here it is. “Unsustainable.” Thanks not to Hamas, but to Turkey.

“We are working urgently with Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and other international partners to develop new procedures for delivering more goods and assistance to Gaza,” said Mike Hammer, spokesman for the White House National Security Council.

“The current arrangements are unsustainable and must be changed. For now, we call on all parties to join us in encouraging responsible decisions by all sides to avoid any unnecessary confrontations,” Hammer said in a statement…

“It remains a U.S. priority to provide assistance to the people of Gaza,” Hammer said.

“In the interest of the safety of all involved, and the safe transmission of assistance to the people of Gaza, we strongly encourage those on board the Rachel Corrie and other vessels to sail to Ashdod to deliver their materials to Gaza,” he said, referring to the Israeli port.

That last bit is the White House’s concession to Israel. Remember, the “activists” aboard the Corrie have already rejected the idea of cruising to Ashdod in favor of heading on to Gaza to challenge Israeli authority. This is Obama’s way of preemptively placing some blame on them in hopes that they’ll reconsider and avoid a confrontation with the IDF.

This has been quite a coup for Turkey, though, hasn’t it? Whatever “adjustment” is made to the blockade will be trumpeted by Erdogan and his cronies as a victory for both the country and Islam, a pair of identities that they hope to intertwine for their political benefit. Meanwhile, they’ll go on alternately rattling their saber at Israel and insisting that they really want to be friends, except that the Israelis make it so darned difficult. It’s a classic good cop/bad cop routine with Turkey in both roles — the secular-ish, western-friendly, quasi-European state on the one hand and the belligerent, overtly religious, Palestinian faux-champion on the other. The goal is to get everyone to tread lightly and make occasional concessions lest the bad cop overwhelm the good and Turkey be lost to the Islamist orbit forever. So here’s the first concession: The blockade is now “unsustainable,” thanks to a flotilla organized by degenerates from the Muslim Brotherhood and aided and abetted by Ankara. And Erdogan will play it to the hilt:

Lately for the first time, the AK [Islamist] government began to run into domestic problems. The poor status of the economy, the growing discontent of many Turks with creeping Islamism in the society, and the election — for the first time — of a popular leader for the opposition party began to give hope that next year’s elections might bring down the regime. Indeed, polls showed the AK sinking into or very close to second place. With the army neutered, elections are the only hope of getting Turkey off the road to Islamism…

But then the Gaza flotilla sailed in. Many oppositionist Turks see this as close to a conspiracy, and one can hardly blame them for doing so. A radical Islamist group close to the government organized this whole affair, which while nominally independent, enjoyed the Turkish government’s patronage…

Is this the magic weapon the AK will use to gain reelection next year? Many Turks think so, and are angry at Israel for, in their eyes, helping the survival of the regime they hate.

Relaxing the blockade also helps its survival insofar as the regime can take credit. But Obama has a national security agenda too — e.g., expanding special ops to target jihadists all over the world is a big part of it — and he doesn’t need provocateurs like Turkey demagoging him if/when the next U.S. operation somewhere goes horribly wrong, especially with Muslims already feeling disillusioned about Hopenchange. This is his attempt to buy a small reservoir of goodwill for later use. Hope it’s worth it, champ.

Translation: it’s unsustainable because Obama won’t stand behind Israel on it. Pity, Joe Biden stumbles upon his first right statement in years, in his initial comments on the blockade, and Obama overrides him.

Caving to the terrorist regime in Gaza. Great plan.

I’ve got an idea. While we’re expanding spec ops missions, how about we take out some f’ing Hamas and Hezbollah members? Why do we continue to allow them to exist? (I know, I know, “it’s complicated”, whatever).

Know what’s really unsustainable? Having a Muslim terrorist symp POS in charge of our “NATO ally” Turkey.
If we had an intelligent president with some balls, he’d let all of Turkey know that they have a choice right this minute between radical Islam or NATO, and if they make the wrong choice, they are going to end up on the wrong side of history.

Strange…well…not reeealy.
NoKo sinks a SoKo ship…on Obamas watch.
The 3 year old naval blockade keeping weapons out of Gaza is now a major issue and hell breaks loose as islamic extremists and their enablers do their best to inspire hatred of Jews…on Obamas watch.
Iran is now inches away from nukes…yeah, on Obamas watch.
I can go on in this vein for quite some time. Seems like all the punks that have been keeping their heads down for fear of pissin’ off the US are now showing their asses for all to see, knowing that Obama won’t do squat. He sees us as an Imperialist power just as Valerie Jarret said.
His formative years were spent in an islamic shithole where the US was reviled and despised. He has no connection to us. He is above all that and and as has been said, he’s the worlds President. Problem is he’s not Americas President first…or second. The lack of passion in his voice, the fake anger…piss poor acting. He only sounds engaged when he’s talking sports.
Never forget what Obama said in Ayers book, “Audacity of Hope”.
“I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”
Not, “with America”, not “with Americans” or even, “with the people of America”. No. He will stand with the muslim.
Kinda pisses me off….

Soft Tyranny. Obamacare passed against the will of the people.
The EPA takes control of CO2 and plans to destroy the economy with draconian regulations. Cap and Trade looms ready to do its part to destroy commerce. no one wants it but we’re gonna get it aint we…

Khun Joe on June 5, 2010 at 8:18 AM

It wouldn’t be ‘unsustainable’ if the US put its Sixth Fleet in charge of the boycott. Let the Irish go up against our navy. But that would require a President who had US interests at heart, not the present President.

eaglewingz08 on June 5, 2010 at 8:59 AM

There’s been a way to end the blockade from the beginning it was instigated: peace. Hamas doesn’t want it.

And obama can go to hell.

Dude, the 6th fleet on Obama’s watch would serve as Gaza’s personal Naval body guards against the zionist entity. Your faith in the brass to follow their conscience instead of orders is admirable, but not something I’d bet money on.

The Obama Administration is unsustainable.

You don’t see them packing up for siberia and handing the keys to the Whitehouse over to the Republicans.

So I guess sustainability doesn’t mean much in our world today.

(And given how small the Gaza coasline is, the Israeli Navy can practically patrol it WHILE STILL IN PORT.)

An opportunity for what amounts to unlimited resupply would be contrary to their supposition that the Israeli Navy Blockade is unsustainable. By contrast, if Russia wanted to maintain a surface naval fleet in the central atlantic in perpituity, THAT would be unsustainable.

Once again, Obamaites do nothing but put their ignorance matters outside of Community Organizing on display for all to see.

Allah. Stop listening to the drivel emanating from the Adminisitration (Then again, maybe you thought up this rationale all by yourself). The Turks have been exoriating the US in the Islamic media for the past ten years, ever since Erdogan was elected Prime Minister.

Obama’s Hope and Change policy in the Middle East is based upon a farago of lies. He lied about the extent of Islamic involvement in US History and the history of the Middle-East conflict. Hence the insistence on Israel doing everything.

Democrats and Progressives insisted that Obama force through the Health Care bill because Obama would be remembered throught history as the President who brought universal health care to the peiople.

They may be surprised when he is marked as the President who’s policies spawned a conflagration which spanned the globe.

Appeasement never works.

“(And given how small the Gaza coasline is, the Israeli Navy can practically patrol it WHILE STILL IN PORT.)”

One caveat. The Turkish ferry was pretty large. The Israeli Navy does not have a lot of large ships. They cannot disable a vessel if they are then unable to control the vessel.

davod on June 6, 2010 at 10:14 AM

The blockade is sustainable, however, Odumbo and his regime are NOT!
