Andre Bauer: Maybe Nikki Haley should take a lie-detector test

posted at 4:51 pm on June 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

She’s already vowed to resign if the charges against her are proved true but that won’t help Bauer if he’s bounced in the primary, so here comes the next stage in attacking Haley’s character. This is the same guy, mind you, whom Erick Erickson suspects of being behind Will Folks’s smear campaign and whose own since-fired consultant, Larry Marchant, claimed to have had a one-night stand with Haley, to the great amusement of everyone who’s seen that video of him. Question for Bauer: Will these be his and hers polygraphs? You ready to sit down next to Haley and tell the machine that you haven’t pushed any smears about her to the media?

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer challenged GOP gubernatorial opponent Nikki Haley today to take a lie-detector test to prove that she didn’t have an affair, as his former campaign consultant claimed…

“Nobody has been a better friend of transparency than Andre Bauer,” Bauer said in a news release. “Ms. Haley, on the other hand, speaks of transparency, but apparently only for other people, not for herself. … Now, we learn that she is refusing to release phone and text messages which could clear up some of the unfortunate recent allegations.”

Bauer also said Haley is “not the person she is pretending to be.”

I take it that last bit is a nod at the new “Haley’s a phony Christian” smear, which of course was also the point of the now infamous “raghead” crack by State Sen. Jake Knotts. In fact, Knotts had a bit more to say about that than was initially reported. Can this story somehow get even worse? My friends, it can:

Knotts says he believed Haley has been set up by a network of Sikhs and was programmed to run for governor of South Carolina by outside influences in foreign countries. He claims she is hiding her religion and he wants the voters to know about it.

“We got a raghead in Washington; we don’t need one in South Carolina,” Knotts said more than once. “She’s a raghead that’s ashamed of her religion trying to hid it behind being Methodist for political reasons.”…

Knotts says he believes Haley’s father has been sending letters to India saying that Haley is the first Sikh running for high office in America. He says her father walks around Lexington wearing a turban.

“We’re at war over there,” Knotts said.

Asked to clarify, he said he did not mean the United States was at war with India, but was at war with “foreign countries.”

So Haley’s family is Indian and we’re fighting Muslim jihadis, and … close enough, I guess? Today Jenny Sanford leveraged some of her moral authority on Haley’s behalf by denouncing the scumbaggery being practiced here, but I fear South Carolina’s a lost cause. My mental picture of the state these days is of a giant sleaze blob laying waste to the land, consuming everyone and everything it touches. Note to Hot Air readers in SC: Get out while you still can.

Andre Bauer is a deceiver, a dissembler
His KKK sheets are alight
From what pole or banner
Shall they dangle in the night?

What infernal serpent
Has lent him his forked tongue?
From what pit of foul deceit
Have all his slanders sprung?

What red devil of mendacity
Grips his sick soul with such tenacity?
Will not one in a state he so cruelly showers with lies
Put a pistol ball between his empty eyes?

It’s stuff like this that gives the South a bad name.

therightwinger on June 4, 2010 at 6:11 PM

What’s pathetic isn’t the politicians, they are hopeless…it’s the people who believe these guys, the general public who is taken in by people like Bauer, they are pathetic.

right2bright on June 4, 2010 at 6:13 PM

I highly recommend the episode of “Penn & Teller’s Bullsh*t” on lie detectors. You’ll understand well why their “results” can’t be used as evidence in court afterwards.

Nikki Haley made two recent mistakes.

1. She never should have said she’ll resign if the charges are proved true. Why say this if the charges are not true? The hypothesis is false and insulting. She should have responded by saying just that, and: “why should I concede to resigning if the charges are proved true when the charges are not true. They’re not true, so I would never have to resign.”

2. She should have smacked down the first question from the idiot Ted Baxter-moderator of the debate about “where there is smoke, isn’t there fire?” Where there’s smoke there’s fire? So if 10 people make false and scurrilous accusations, that means there is 10 times the smoke, and 10 times the odds that the accusation is true? She should have said: “as a reporter, don’t you see the bias and degradation to journalism in that question? Isn’t it your job to make distinctions between false and true charges, between smoke and fire? You’re asking me? Do your job, then start talking to me about the relation between smoke and fire.”

that is a myth. NC votes in national elections for the GOP but its state government has been controlled by DEMS since the Civil War. One of the main reasons they started to vote for the GOp in national elections was that after the Civil rights law many dems switched parties and become GOPer. Helms was a big one. Senator helms helped carry the state for the GOp and many occasions. Since his death Nc has been trrending more Zel Miller democtre. The Obama admin I think has pushed NC back into the Red Colume but the NC voter is more Reagan democrate than country club Bush republican.

I’d agree with that. Though, the western part of the state is pretty loyal to Republicans. Eastern North Carolina meanwhile is loyal to the Democrats with the except of maybe Raleigh of Wilmington, which lean to the Republicans…..

Anyway, it may be a somewhat conservative state overall, but that doesn’t seem to translate into the people voting Republican at the local level. Which really hurts when it comes to economics and fiscal issues….

I watched an interview with Andre Bauer when the Sanford scandal exploded. He came across as sensible, honest, and principled. I thought it was a gutsy sign of integrity when he pledged not to run for reelection if Sanford resigned and Bauer became governor.

Then this campaign happened. I know next to nothing about Ms. Haley except that she’s a Republican state legislator, an attractive woman, and a couple of deeply weird guys claim to have slept with her. Based on Mr. Bauer’s behavior over the last few days I have to conclude he’s a swine. Whether she’s telling the truth or lying about the accusations doesn’t change the fact that Andre Bauer is pushing a sleazy campaign. I hope he’s blown out of the primary just for being a bad Republican by completely ignoring Reagan’s 11th Commandment.

Jill1066 on June 4, 2010 at 6:22 PM

How can anyone say South Carolina’s a lost cause if Nikki Haley is more likely than not to be its next Governor?

That should more than make up for Bauer, Knotts and their supporters.

Mister Mets on June 4, 2010 at 6:27 PM

It’s also worth noting Bauer’s fourth in the polls.

Haley shouldn’t do anything to give him more media attention.

Mister Mets on June 4, 2010 at 6:27 PM

Bauer seems like a total weirdo. The kind of guy you’d have to worry about getting caught dressed up as a clown in a gas station bathroom.

Can’t use tar anymore, it might be considered a terrorist threat.
But could one send a chocolate bar and a bag of feathers to our politician of choice, with instructions to microwave on high until hot them apply to skin and sprinkle with feathers.

meci on June 4, 2010 at 6:35 PM

The new transparency. Bauer and Knotts are flying their ugly flags proudly and at full mast. With the public disgust for incumbents and good old boy corruption, we can hope that the people of SC will honor them (and Huckabee as well) with the traditional one finger salute.

When it come to calls for people to run because of the sleaze I wonder why we’re not hearing the rally cries for people to flee the country considering the make up of this administration?

And….. the Blago trial starts soon. Hopefully we won’t hear anyone encouraging people who live in Illinois to relocate. They might end up here.

Cody1991 on June 4, 2010 at 6:38 PM

Andre Bauer’s really starting to come across as the Andrew Sullivan to Nikki Haley’s Sarah Palin.

jon1979 on June 4, 2010 at 6:44 PM

And here I thought the “good ol’ boy” corruption scandal in Cuyahoga County, OH was bad. Whewie…when it comes to slime balls, South Carolina has us beat by a mile. Talk about a bunch of D-bags.

GrannyDee on June 4, 2010 at 6:47 PM

I thought you were done with these stories? Guess the rewards of smearing someone are too great.

Blog perogative?

It’s disgusting. The entire smear campaign is beyond the pale.

She should be elected, frankly, just to put the boyz in their place.

AnninCA on June 4, 2010 at 7:14 PM

It’s also worth noting Bauer’s fourth in the polls.

The most recent poll (5/25) has him #2, 10 points behind Haley.

It REALLY pisses me off to have to apologize for my wonderful state, South Carolina. Therefore, I will have to take it out on the person that is causing me to do it. That would be Andre Bauer, who is a piss poor example of a human being but an excellant example of a RINO sore looser. As for Nikki….She has my family’s votes. We will be a lucky and proud state to call her Governor.

SandyToes on June 4, 2010 at 8:04 PM

By the way, South Carolina is also the state that gave the country Senator Jim Demint!!!

ok, we also gave America Lindsey Gramnasty…..Sorry.

SandyToes on June 4, 2010 at 8:09 PM

I think Andre’ Bauer’s past run-ins with the law are fair game now, if they weren’t already.

since 1997, the lieutenant governor has had two accidents, four tickets and one suspended license for failure to pay a ticket.

That does not include the warning he got in late December for speeding in Laurens County, or the time he was stopped and still not ticketed for going more than 100 miles an hour down I-77 in Chester County.

On the day after Christmas on Interstate 385 in Laurens County, a highway patrol officer pulls up on a 2006 BMW. The patrolman has clocked the car at about 77 in a 65 mile-an-hour zone. Behind the wheel is Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer. Looking for his registration, Bauer warns the officer he might have a gun in the glovebox, and he wants to know if he’s being videotaped.

Bauer’s explanation for going too fast? “Just running late as usual.”

The trooper recognizes the lieutenant governor and Bauer gets a warning but no ticket.

Two months later, on February 25 in Chester County, two troopers target a state-issued Crown Victoria blasting down I-77 at over 100 miles an hour. As the troopers try to catch up, someone on their police radio calls to let them know the driver of the car is “SC-2,” code for the lieutenant governor.

It is Bauer himself, using a two-way radio in his car. [Read transcript.]

When the car finally stops, one trooper pulls alongside, sees that it’s Bauer, and waves him on. No ticket is issued, not even a warning.

Public safety director Jim Schweitzer says, “What we’re telling our troopers is that we treat everyone, no matter their status, fairly and equitably.”

The lieutenant governor has had at least one other run-in with law enforcement. In 2003, a police officer stopped Bauer for speeding and running red lights in downtown Columbia. Bauer was going 60 miles-an-hour in a 35 miles-per-hour zone. The officer briefly held Bauer at gunpoint.

Obviously, Bauer is power hungry and will do anything to maintain it.

SouthernGent on June 4, 2010 at 8:37 PM

Sacred Honor requires me to reveal that I’ve heard that Andre Bauer is a child molester and as he refuses to take a lie detector test to disprove those allegations it clearly demonstrates he is in fact a child molester as far as the MainStreamMedia will report given that Andre Bauer has resorted to hiding behind unsupported denials.
I’ve also heard he’s Trig’s real father… which of course he also transparently denies while refusing to submit to a lie detector test in that circumstance as well.

DANEgerus on June 4, 2010 at 8:58 PM

Bauer also said Haley is “not the person she is pretending to be.”

Speaking of “pretending to be” someone or something they are not, I just saw the video where Larry Marchant claims to have had a “on night stand” with Haley.

Well Larry, if selling kneepads is not your forte in life, it would behoove you to lose that lisp.

Dude, seriously? Fine. I heard you had sex with goats. Why do you sleep with goats? Don’t deny it; it’s clearly true.

No, I have no proof, but clearly you need to take a lie detector test while I ask every possible question I can think of to tear apart your past.

You’re a big “he-man so I’m sure you’re ok with me choosing a random indefensible smear to attack you, and then violate your privacy; right?

This is how the world works; I get to make an unsupported smear; then demand you give public information to defend yourself.

I think we’re also going to need your work history, a list of places you’ve lived, a list of your past sexual partners, and permission to snoop about your domicile without you present… what, you want to clear your name, right?

Or are you as cowardly and weak as a woman? Of course not… so we’ll be spending the next year divulging every detail of your life, and making you help us… to prove you’re not a scared little girl.

Or we can simply declare that you have sex with goats, and alpacas too… which is really quite weird.

I’m from SC…unfortunately SC politics is utterly dominated by the connected, genteel attorney class. Many of them speak with that genteel southern accent that no else uses…Henra Mcmasta like. I can spot them a mile away.

What you’re seeing is their entrenched good ole boy system flailing about from the threatening electoral environment. Oh and…Andre’ Bauer is child in a big person’s world. He’s desperate now and the fact that he has submerged himself to this level of mudslinging proves it. While he’s done so real harm as Lt. Gov., he’s had his own embarrassing moments. It’s time he moves on to other things.
