Newest attack on Nikki Haley: She’s only pretending to be a Christian; Update: State senator calls Haley a “raghead”
posted at 7:39 pm on June 3, 2010 by Allahpundit
I think this is going to be my last post about this race, guys. Every time I write one, no matter how hard I scrub afterwards, I can’t get the filth off my hands.
This latest bit started with David Brody of CBN, wondering why Haley’s campaign website in 2004 emphasized her Sikh faith and why her current one emphasizes her Christian faith. Just a case of a reporter doing a little digging on his own initiative? Not quite. Ben Smith:
[I]n the nasty game of South Carolina politics, in which Haley has already been accused twice publicly of infidelity, the religion story has a clear political charge. Brody told me in an email that his story was prompted by “a tip from an anonymous source,” and Tim Pearson, Haley’s spokesman, said the story was “being shopped” and that Brody wasn’t the only reporter to call him about it.
A source close to the campaign of one rival — Rep. Gresham Barrett, who touts his Christian faith in his ads — said the Barrett campaign has at least discussed playing the religion card. The source said his aides sometimes refer to her by the Indian name with which she was born, “Nimrata,” in the campaign office.
“They always thought that the relgion thing would be what would save Gresham in the end against Nikki,” said the source, an outside adviser to Barrett who said he was speaking to a reporter because he disliked the notion of attacking Haley on her faith.
Barrett’s camp adamantly denies that they’re responsible. Now that we’ve covered ye olde infidelity and “foreigner” smears, I figure we’re two days away from the obligatory lesbian accusation and then, on primary eve, maybe an “anonymous tip” that she killed a bunch of kids back in the 80s or something. But the biggest bombshell of all is being saved for the general election. Could Nikki Haley be … a closet atheist? Hopefully Will Folks’s book shall reveal all, my friends.
Two clips for you. One is from last night’s debate of Haley reducing Andre Bauer to speechlessness by wondering why he didn’t fire the consultant who’s now claiming an affair with her sooner. The other is of the consultant himself, who isn’t what I pictured when I heard that some guy was alleging a one-night stand with Nikki Haley. From one beta male to another, buddy: Nuh uh.
Update: The good news, I guess, is that there’s not much further to go until rock bottom.
South Carolina Republicans were quick Thursday evening to condemn the remarks of a prominent Republican State Senator, Jake Knotts, who referred to a gubernatorial candidate as a “raghead” on an online political show today.
Knotts, a foe of Governor Mark Sanford and his protege, State Rep. Nikki Haley, made the remark of Haley on the local webcast PubPolitics.
Haley’s campaign and the state GOP both condemned him.

Lord, South Carolina politics are almost as dirty as Chicago.
amerpundit on June 3, 2010 at 8:57 PM
mmmm. Dirty in a very different way than Chicago. Here we have a core group of good-ole-boys that are about 40 years behind the rest of the nation with regard to how they view women. They try to put a good face on it but they are mostly a bunch of chauvenists that are stuck in the 70′s.
The boys stick together..makes me sick. I am aware of a situation where serious back scratching resulted in a legal decision to “put a woman in her place” (words overheard outside of the courtroom).
They can’t stand the thought of a woman being at the helm. That’s it in a nutshell.

A gentleman never discusses his conquests, not even to his best friends. To do so dishonors the lady, first and foremost, but secondarily it gives the other guys hope.
These pricks who are lying about Nikki Haley should be introduced to their new jailhouse husbands fortwith.
TXUS on June 3, 2010 at 10:23 PM
It really isn’t astonishing. These guys are scared.
Many years ago when I was a young, brassy chick living in NYC I got tired of walking down the street of a chic neighborhood where an exclusive men’s club was housed. The old farts always looked out the windows and drooled. So I finally turned the corner one day, walked inside and up the stairs to the private rooms.
I was grabbed, escorted to the door with stern warnings that I was facing arrest and prosecution.
This is no different, really. These guys have a club . They don’t want anyone one in especially someone who will have a position of authority.
They are going to fight Haley with everything the have. What’s amusing is that they are exposing themselves for what they are. They want to continue in their corrupt ways, and they don’t want some girl to interfere. It’s the Palin story all over again.

This is silly. Is the American conservative movement the exclusive domain of Christians such that one can get accused of not being Christian enough? What if Ms Haley remained a Sikh? Would that disqualify her just because of her religion? I understand she is from S.C where religion does play a central part in politics. But to be accused of not being enough of a Christian? As a Hindu American, I would like to think that people of Hindu or Sikh or Buddhist or Jain faiths could run and win political office. I am certainly fiscally conservative and in several social areas as well. But, it these kinds of comments and attitudes that give me pause if there is room for non-Christian people in the conservative movement. I would vote for anyone who had the same beliefs in most of the issues as I.
md on June 3, 2010 at 10:30 PM
Yep. That’s why this is such an interesting and exciting time in politics. We have good women and men standing for office who are facing great odds from establishment party politicians.
We should give them a chance. I expect to be disappointed. None of them are super humans. I don’t always agree with Palin, for example, but I do think she is a bright, powerful light. There are many if we give them a chance – and we must if we are ever going to change things.

This isn’t about “social justice.” This is about trying to preserve some semblance of basic decency in politics. As a Southerner, I am particularly disturbed to think Nikki Haley’s enemies believe that the people of South Carolina would not only tolerate but endorse this kind of cruelty against her.
Is chivalry dead in South Carolina? Does no shred of honor remain?

I truly don’t think that’s what it is & I’m pretty sensitive to that sort of thing.
This has gotten so bizarre with the all-too-obviously gay Marchant chiming in to help the even more obviously gay Bauer, my hunch is what they’ve got there in South Carolina is a huge pink mafia masquerading as straight southern conservatives who seem to have taken over a good portion of the GOP there & are deathly afraid of having their turf taken away & possibly their covers blown by a new infusion of reform-minded people.
Let’s just say that ladies across the country who’ve had their doubts about Lindsey Graham all these years are finally beginning to to understand a lot more about South Carolina politics this week than they ever imagined. All the crazy contradictions about the wacky GOP in that state are finally starting to make sense to me.
leilani on June 3, 2010 at 10:35 PM
As noted by another commenter, Elizabeth Dole tried to paint her rival as non-Christian and lost the race. This is not a winning tactic so I think it is safe to say the most don’t think that questioning someone’s religion is valid. As for the “raghead” remark, that’s just plan tacky and I feel certain that man is going to pay dearly for the slip of the tongue.

As an outsider who has lived in the state for the last 25 years (I moved here from San Fran) I have to disagree with you. I went to USC (one block from the statehouse) and have seen the good ole boy machine from the inside, unfortunately. I’ve been descriminated against because I’m female (a post graduate degree doesn’t help if you’re not a boy) and seen disgusting favor-calling amongst the legally connected that would make Obama proud. But it’s not a ‘mafia’ thing, it’s a network of boys that scratch each other’s backs and owe or call favors as the need arises.
Jim DeMint is the best thing to happen to this state. He doesn’t play the game and is the real deal..and as far as I can tell, Nikki Haley is the real deal, too. She’s seen it all from the inside and they know that she know’s who they really are.

Cody1991 on June 3, 2010 at 10:49 PM
Right on — but it’s deeper than misogyny. As in Palin, she’s a reformer. The combination is anathema.
And I agree that these are exciting days. Things have to get worse before they get better, and we should see the mad thrashings of a decadent power losing its grip as a good sign. We just can’t stop pressing.

It’s true. It’s a tough and painful process, but voters have the responsibility to be as tough as those who are running. Like so many I became complacent, too trusting. Then again, we didn’t have access to as much information (and as quickly) as we do now. That’s why I’m so interested in younger, media savvy contenders. They know that we can track their activities. Knotts is utterly and completely pathetic as are the allegations of affairs lodged by a blogger and consultant for one of her opponents. As far as the religion “issues” being shopped by Barrett’s people? At this point I wouldn’t put anything past any of these guys.
Haley will win the primary handilly and then beat McMaster in the runoff.
Meanwhile all the Dems except Senator Ford are falling all over themselves to embrace President Obama’s stimulus spending.
My prediction is conservative and independent South Carolinians will remember this mess in November, electing Haley as the next governor of South Carolina.

LEBA, we could compare stories about the ‘boys’, for sure. I can say that the times they tried to crowd me out or out right threatened me was when they knew I was better informed than they were, and knew what I was doing.
My timing was off. I’m older than Palin and Haley. My field wasn’t politics. These women interest me, but not just because they’re women. I’ve known men who couldn’t break into the ‘club’ as well. They were good people who wanted a chance to participate.
In the end, it’s about doing the right things. I must say, however, that having women like Bachman, Palin and perhaps, Haley make it rather sweet.

I hesitate to tell the stories because SC has such a bad rep regarding women!
I mentioned in a different thread last night that pretty much anyone in SC is only 3 degrees of separation from the statehouse. Word gets around and people know things. One of my employees was a personal assistant to a prominent state senator…oh, MY WORD! The things I heard would curl your eyebrows!
Common knowledge hasn’t translated into action until the last 10 years or so. Things are finally starting to turn. I personally think the attack on Haley was spurred by Palin’s endorsement. Palin embodies the ‘threat’ of female leadership, something that every good.ole.boy fears. As a female, Nikki is a double whammy to their egos since she is ‘not from arii-yound he-ah.’

Haley’s parents are Indian Sikhs and she was raised in that religion. She has since converted to Christianity and is a Methodist, but still attends Sikh services too.
`
I don’t think it is so much a sexist thing as an establishment of corruption thing. Haley’s a reformer, who would continue to harass and harangue the legislature for their irresponsible spending and possibly seek to open corruption investigations. That’s the threat – if she would smile real nice and just take the money and play the game, they’d love her to death.
`
Look at her, then look at her husband Michael, then look at the losers who claimed to have had . . . whatever it is they are claiming, with her. It doesn’t pass the laugh test.

As for all the Nikki Haley is hot stuff, save it. That’s the exact climate that has here where it is now. Her looks are irrelevant. Grow up.
Narutoboy, you are sterotyping southern-Americans. You should feel terrible. I certainly do, really.
States and municipalities flying Confederate-era flags is a good place to start. The rest of America is supposed to romanticize several states worth of traitors and terrorist because southern folk are unwilling to let their “heritage” die on the battlefield.
Flying Confederate battle flags or other such flags is flat-out offensive.
I don’t understand how so many conservatives support this crap but have the nerve complain about people playing The Race Card. There is nothing that says “I can’t get over something” more than flying a flag about it.
The Race Card on June 4, 2010 at 4:44 AM
Just like with the progressive leftist establishment trying to cut off a potential threat at the knees (the hysteria of branding the tea parties as racist) the SC good ol boy networks hysteria is palpable with these attacks on Haley.
rickyricardo on June 4, 2010 at 6:47 AM
I don’t recall anyone in the South expecting the rest of America to “romanticize” the Confederacy.
We were not, however, “traitors and terrorists.”
Many who fought for the South did so out of sense of true patriotism, regarding federal efforts to force things on the several states that they didn’t want as tyranny–kind of like now with ObamaCare.
I, for one, find the rainbow gay flag offensive and yet I see it flown more and more.
Ditto the Hammer and Sickle flag or the Green/Earth Day flag.
Get over yourself, Race Card!
I doubt that it’s even *allowed* to fly the Confederate flag anywhere anymore, but you can’t erase the Confederate legacy from our hearts.
I’m sick of the race baiting, quotas, demands for reparations and affirmative action programs that come from your side!
That hasn’t changed minds and hearts, either or if it has, it’s not for the better.
Jenfidel on June 4, 2010 at 7:03 AM
She came from nowhere, attracting some attention from conservative bloggers nationally, but not really catching fire in SC until the Palin endorsement. Haley was already moving up, but slowly, and that supercharged the campaign.
`
It scared the establishment, but more because of what she represents – reform – than her as a candidate. In SC, we changed our constitution to weaken the Governor some years ago, so the legislature usually gets its way (and they aren’t above backroom deals to get there – in fact they are the preferred kind). But they were looking for some relief after eight years of Sanford haranguing them about details like responsibility and fiscal sanity and revenue projections based on unicorn droppings. Now maybe this reform candidate wins and makes doing business uncomfortable for yet another four years.
`
This is why the whole thing was so amateurishly put together. They were surprised by her surge into contention, and didn’t have time to cook up anything plausible.
Adjoran on June 4, 2010 at 7:12 AM
I’m offended by the rainbow gay flag.

A couple bad things about this thread. I am not a huge fan of ragging people for typos, unless they are in the midst of a response telling someone else that they are dumb, then it invalidates their entire post. Second, there seems to be a lack of perspective. Dealing in generalities about race, religion, or region basically says you are ignorant concerning the individuals that are being addressed in the original post. I also feel that – contrary to my 25 years of internet experience – that people should be treated as I would want to be treated. The zeitgeist today dispenses with a lot of classic virtues, but let us strive to maintain the Golden Rule.

The south, like any other place, has it’s problems, but your focus exclusively on the South is an indicator of your own bias. Racism may exist in the south, but is it any worse than the racism a white person would face is most inner cities, or the sexism faced by women in Islam? You can dress up your hatred of the south in rags of righteousness, but you’re as bad as any “good ole boy” when it comes to hate.

This Haley thing isn’t a SC problem. It’s a GOP problem. Looks like they got a hornets nest down there that needs to be cleaned out before it stings us in the butt.

I thought you were smarter than this. Perhaps not where history is concerned. Don’t let the chip on your shoulder rewrite history – the progressives will do that for you…

Knotts just had his “macaca” moment.
Somebody should introduce him to Bobby Jindal, also of Indian descent and a convert to Christianity, elected Governor of another Deep South state.
When are these guys going to get Martin Luther King’s message of judging a man (or woman) not on the color of their skin but the content of their character? They got that message in Louisiana!

I guess politics has come down to the “Ah Shit” my opponent had a better affair than I did, and he has to balls to do it with out opponent. Which bring to my mind so quotes worth sharing.
“Eighty percent of married men cheat in America. The rest cheat in Europe.”
“If you cannot convince them, confuse them.”
Harry S. Truman
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and Jill a rich widow.”
“Language is the source of misunderstandings.”

My God, could this Knotts fella be more insipid, stupid, and contemptible?

It may take a few years, but don’t be surprised to see “Mama Grizzlies” controlling the GOP.

You went full retard. Never go full retard.

Once again, MadCon, it’s like asking the sun not to shine.

I’ve lived here in SC all of my life. Sadly, the people of SC will not be offended by the term raghead. I’ve heard it all my life here and from family members. The man who called her that wasn’t thinking that people outside of SC would be offended by that. Trust me, you’re not going to hear about residents here being outraged over what he said. You’ll only hear it condemned by people in SC politics.

So my supposed “stereotype” about that region was correct then?
Narutoboy on June 4, 2010 at 12:06 PM
You don’t pay attention real well, do you?
The answer is, of course, “No,” Cartoonboy.

Wait, diner and a few drinks?
Rohypnol, GHB, or Ketamine Hydrochloride?

In all honesty I like DeMint MORE than I do my state’s loser Senators Dodd and Lieberman!
