Arizona governor: I had a “very cordial discussion” with Obama

posted at 6:13 pm on June 3, 2010 by Allahpundit

Did she really, though? Check out her wry smile and refusal to comment at around 2:30 when a reporter asks if she thinks the president’s actually read the bill yet.

Apparently The One didn’t want to chat about the most contentious issue on the table, i.e. whether the DOJ’s going to file suit to block the Arizona statute, so they ended up making chitchat about how long it’ll be before that token National Guard force finally makes it to the border. Question for Brewer: Why didn’t you press Captain Civility on the endless race-baiting demagoguery that’s been bubbling up from the left like a broken well in the Gulf of Mexico? It’s not just coming from the rank-and-file, either. The latest:

Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., told a Democratic Club on Tuesday that white supremacist groups are influencing lawmakers to adopt laws that will lead to discrimination.

“There’s a concerted effort behind promoting these kinds of laws on a state-by-state basis by people who have ties to white supremacy groups,” said the lawmaker, who is of Mexican descent. “It’s been documented. It’s not mainstream politics.”…

[Think Progress] wrote that the Immigration Law Reform Institute, the legal arm of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), helped write the law. The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled FAIR a hate group, a designation that the organization disputes.

Sanchez sought to clarify her comments Thursday.

“I never said that everyone who supports the Arizona law is a racist or white supremacist,” she said in a written statement. “Anyone who says different is just trying to inflame the issue and get away from the real discussion of how to reform the immigration system in this country.”

This comes on the same day that L.A.’s school board is recommending that the Arizona statute be taught in history classes alongside Jim Crow and Japanese internment. I’m not sure why Brewer was so eager to meet with him if she didn’t want to call him on that or on his predictable above-the-fray indifference to economic boycotts of the state, but I guess a photo op with the president is always a good thing. Unless you’re Charlie Crist, of course. Exit question: Is the U.S./Mexico border actually super-safe?

If the law is ‘unconstitutional’, WHY hasn’t the DOJ filed a lawsuit?

How many lawyers does it take to review a law? How long does it take? I thought the DOJ had ‘the best and the brightest’.

Well, the entire meeting’s purpose was to give Obama an opportunity invalidate the claim that he was doing nothing about border security. He isn’t, but he needed her to help him look like he is and that she’s OK with his empty gestures. It looks like she just did that.

Never more than now do I understand this canard ‘Reform’. We HAVE perfectly fine immigration laws that provide for orderly, LEGAL immigration into this country.

‘Reform’ means nothing more than granting those that chose to violate our laws amnesty. Period.

And I do understand the theory behind the ‘anchor baby’ thing. But when they trot out the whole ‘you can’t separate families’ BS I have to ask this: If you’re here illegally, get (rightly) deported, how can you legally leave a minor child behind??? Aren’t there laws against child abandonment?? Get in line and take your kids with you.

IlikedAUH2O on June 3, 2010 at 8:17 PM

In all honesty, I just wouldn’t have spoken to Obama, and flat-out refused to meet with him. If anybody asked, I’d've told them that ‘he didn’t think it was important enough, the first time, so I don’t see how anything significant could’ve changed. I have a state to run, and I don’t have time for his bullcrap’.

Arizona needs to really push hard. A massive spending slash, cutting all unnecessary programs and big tax cuts to business, in order to try pulling more in. With some of that money, they really need to seriously beef up the Arizona Rangers, making them a hard-core paramilitary force, perhaps working with the Arizona National Guard Military Police, and even the Army Rangers. She needs to get closer ties to the governors of Texas and New Mexico, so they can form a contiguous wall of police forces, the front line being border-duty Arizona Rangers, Texas Rangers and the NM State Police. They could even fund a joint court system, databases, etc. If the DHS isn’t going to help (which should be resulting in a class action suit against the idiot in Border Patrol, the DHS Secretary, the AG and the Dalai Obama). With NM and TX also taking on spending slashes, improved state ID, tax breaks, etc., I think they’d see even greater turnarounds. Then, it could spread to states like NV, OK, etc.

California, I don’t know about, though. Californians are pretty stupid, that support Schwarzenegger, so I don’t think they’d ever learn.

Not a chance that he’s read SB1070. Not a chance. Any other job position and it would be considered dereliction of duty to be this uninformed or unprepared.

I love her comment at the end about securing the border first and THEN we can talk about other issues! LOVE IT! If only the BrewMeister hadn’t pushed that stupid tax hike on us in AZ. If she would wield the budget hachet with the same vigor as this issue I just may end up having to vote for her.

One of the things that needs to be considered is that the Fedral Government holds purse strings by the fact of laws they enacted. Those old enough will recall that when the federal government told the states to adopt a 55 mph speed limit, not all states wanted to go along with the demand. The federal government said okay, they did not have to, but after a certain date, all states who did not set the highway speed limit no higher than 55 would lose all federal money until they did. All the states decided to fold and accept the no exception 55 mph mandate.
Perhaps Obama is employing a simuliar tactic against Arizona and wanted that closed door face to face meeting to discuss the reality the power he holds, including the power to make her keep her mouth shut about the options he lay out for her. The power of the purse, even if it is your money they have in it, is a hard hammer to ignore. The willingness to use it to hold onto power is stronger than any law.

Kissmygrits on June 4, 2010 at 9:40 AM

Arizona governor: I had a “very cordial discussion” with Obama

We may never know what was actually discussed. To have been a fly on the wall……

“There’s a concerted effort behind promoting these kinds of laws on a state-by-state basis by people who have ties to white supremacy groups,” said the lawmaker, who is of Mexican descent. “It’s been documented. It’s not mainstream politics.”…

Sanchez subtly attempts to imply all those in favor of restricting immigration as having ties to white supremacy.

“I never said that everyone who supports the Arizona law is a racist or white supremacist,” she said in a written statement. “Anyone who says different is just trying to inflame the issue and get away from the real discussion of how to reform the immigration system in this country.”

While correct in her assertion that she never said everyone who supports the Arizona law is a racist or white supremacist, the implication is clear.

[Think Progress] wrote that the Immigration Law Reform Institute, the legal arm of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), helped write the law. The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled FAIR a hate group, a designation that the organization disputes.

In researching this, the SPLC has documented a list of concerns regarding FAIR in support of the assertion that FAIR is a hate group. From questions about a founder, past leadership, to accepting questionable donations, the evidence seems to support the SPLC assertion.
