Video: The worst call in baseball history? Update: I blew it, says ump

posted at 10:07 pm on June 2, 2010 by Allahpundit

I’m sure there have been worse calls, but never one where there was more at stake. Take a good hard look here, purists, because when this clip goes viral tomorrow — and it’s a metaphysical certainty that it will — the age of baseball without instant replay will be well and truly dead. It might not die in the next 24 hours, but it’ll never survive the off-season.

Exit question: Dude, three perfect games in the span of 25 days? What? Click the image to watch.

Update: Wow.

“I just cost that kid a perfect game,” Joyce said. “I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay.”

“It was the biggest call of my career,” said Joyce, who became a full-time major league umpire in 1989…

“I don’t blame them a bit [for booing] or anything that was said,” Joyce said. “I would’ve said it myself if I had been Galarraga. I would’ve been the first person in my face, and he never said a word to me.”

Joyce and Galarraga hugged after the game. Will Selig reverse the call and declare it perfect?

Blowback

Anyone could have easily made the same call.

I think all “close calls” at first are just 50-50 guesses.

Len Barker, Tom Browning, Dennis Martinez, Kenny Rogers, David Wells. dick.

Oh and while we’re at it, let’s just strike Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire from the record books completely for doing steroids because that’s what everybody thinks happened…despite, yknow, no evidence of that and the HRs they hit being what actually did happen..

Actually, you forgot Mike Witt. See, even diehard fans don’t really remember perfect games.

Is baseball still being played? I thought they ended that boring game

The 2 GENTS (pitcher and ump) have already DONE what needs to be done.

Selig should do ZIP / ZERO / NADA.

If Selig just HAS to do SOMETHING – he should put on his ‘Solomon’ hat and declare last night the ONLY 28 out Perfect Game in MLB history by “commissioners decree” and rules be damned for this one instant in time.

’s’ all I got………………………………..

Am I Rip Van Winkle who just woke up to a new world? A socialist president is writing the final epitaph to the American Dream and Allahpoundit (pun intentional) is fuming about a near miss no-hitter.

Horrible call, and Selig screwed the pooch by not over-turning it, just like everyone knew he would. Expanded-replay now, please. The integrity of the game demands it.

I will never understand the desire of some baseball fans to actively argue in favor of letting as much poor on-field officiating to stand as possible. The pace of baseball is better suited to utilize instant-reply more than most sports. In this age where every play is replayed on television two or three times from different angles before the next guy enters the batters box, there is no logical reason to not use it to ensure the most accurate officiating as possible. Allowing teams to routinely benefit from poor calls when the technology exists to prevent it does not speak to any sort of “integrity” as I understand the definition of that word.

Worst call ever? Remember Don Denkinger in the 85 World Series? Makes this call look close.

Maybe Detroit is just the city of very bad umpires. I watched the game against Red Sox a couple weeks back and watched the plate umpire demonstrate what a truly sorry umpire looked like. At least 50% of his ‘called strikes’ were more than 6 inches outside the strike zone with many being as much as 20 inches outside. Absolutely pathetic and he’s still being paid as a major league umpire. Is there no shame?

Quick! Without looking it up, name A’s pitcher that pitched a perfect game this season. Yeah, I didn’t think so. Now, without looking it up, name the last pitcher to pitch a perfect game before this season. Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Because of this, Galarraga’s “perfect game” will be the most talked about perfect game since Don Larsen’s 1956 World Series perfect game. Galarraga will now be remembered longer than “that guy for the A’s”

Disagree Allah. Have to take it straight up……sure the circumstance of the perfect game seem to make it worse but that was inches of being wrong THIS is TWO FEET of being wrong. A Little League Ump doesn’t blow this call.
