Biden on flotilla raid: What else was Israel supposed to do?

posted at 6:07 pm on June 2, 2010 by Allahpundit

If Turkey’s seriously waiting for the U.S. to condemn Israel, sounds like they’ll be waiting an awfully long time.

I can’t believe I’m asking this, but: Second look at Biden?

“They’ve said, ‘Here you go. You’re in the Mediterranean. This ship — if you divert slightly north you can unload it and we’ll get the stuff into Gaza,’”, he said. “So what’s the big deal here? What’s the big deal of insisting it go straight to Gaza? Well, it’s legitimate for Israel to say, ‘I don’t know what’s on that ship. These guys are dropping… 3,000 rockets on my people.

“Look, you can argue whether Israel should have dropped people onto that ship or not — but the truth of the matter is, Israel has a right to know — they’re at war with Hamas — has a right to know whether or not arms are being smuggled in.”

During the interview, Biden also blamed Hamas for the crisis that has wracked the coastal territory and for the ongoing state of conflict with Israel.

“As we put pressure, and the world put pressure on Israel to let material go into Gaza to help those people who are suffering, the ordinary Palestinians there, what happened? Hamas would confiscate it, put it in a warehouse [and] sell it.

Consider this a reminder that, for all the heat we give national Democrats on terrorism, the party’s leadership is vastly better on Israel than the lefty base is. Steny Hoyer reportedly said earlier today that the Israelis had “rightfully” defended themselves and Anthony Weiner came out swinging yesterday on the IDF’s behalf. Whether top Dems feel genuinely protective of Israel or whether they’re merely pandering from fear of losing Jewish votes to the GOP is known only to them, but if you believe Peter Beinart, most young Jewish liberals don’t have any special affection for Israel these days so any pandering is destined to produce diminishing electoral returns. Actually, I guess Beinart’s larger point is that one of the reasons Jewish liberals have lost affection for Israel is due to operations like the Gaza blockade and flotilla raid, but in that case I’m not sure why: According to a piece just published by Reuters(!!), both appear to be legal. Nor is that the only surprising fact-check on the wires tonight. The AP decided to chat with a terrorism expert about the Turkish group that organized the flotilla and came up with this humdinger:

The Istanbul-based Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief, known by its Turkish acronym IHH, had “clear, long-standing ties to terrorism and Jihad,” former investigating judge Jean-Louis Bruguiere told The Associated Press in a telephone interview…

“They were basically helping al-Qaida when (Osama) bin Laden started to want to target U.S. soil,” he said…

The former judge, renowned for tracking down convicted terrorist Carlos the Jackal, said he didn’t believe the IHH could have been infiltrated by terrorists without its knowledge.

“It’s hard to prove, but all elements of the investigation showed that part of the NGO served to hide jihad-type activities,” Bruguiere said. “I’m convinced this was a clear strategy, known by IHH.”

One of the followers of a jihadi who worked for IHH in the 90s was Ahmed Ressam, whom you’ll remember from trying to bomb LAX in the Millennium Plot. Oh, and if you read the whole thing, you’ll find this line too: “[I]t seemed clear at the time [in the 1990s] that it was thanks to a measure of political backing within the Turkish government that it (IHH) could continue to operate.” That’s the most damning line I’ve read yet about the Turkish government’s willful blindness towards the jihadist elements behind the flotilla, and it comes from … an Associated Press interview? We’re through the looking glass here, people.

Say this for the Turks, though: They know what they’re doing. Thanks to the uproar over the flotilla, the UN vote on sanctions against their pals in Tehran has now been postponed for three weeks. Tick tock.

Biden’s wrong but not rotten.

Barry? Rotten. Wrong. Also Inept, Narcissistic, Socialist, Anti-Semitic and any other foul words one cares to name.

Oh come on, England? A sizeable chunk of the population of England does not believe that the Protocols is real. Unless you’re talking exclusively about Islamic immigrant communities or the very distant past. George Orwell wrote a famous essay called Anti-Semitism in Britain in the 1940′s and it never even came up. East Germany, maybe. Russia, maybe some of the older people. The rest, I doubt it very much. How did you come to this conclusion living in Wisconsin your whole life?

They are the corner gas station thats always getting robbed in the hood. Someone is always going to ‘F’ with them. Beat the bully’s asses and get a reputation I guess could help but every so often a reminder message has to be sent. Keeping a gun under the counter is a good deterrant but its never going to stop.

As if it would have mattered anyway. Now, today, three weeks, the Iranians will just blow them off. This is what happens when the US is the weak horse.

Did anyone see Glenn Beck on this today? A great history lesson on how Israel came to be. He kept asking the question if there were any Americans somehow involved – and voila! The 60′s terrorists William Ayers and wife and some other woman from the same group are supporters of the group, Free Gaza, who had three of the ships. They support this group and even have been over there to work with them. Something smell fishy?

Contrary to what you may believe, there isn’t a wall around Wisconsin keeping those of us who live here from leaving. There’s also these cool things you can buy called plane tickets.

And I said they think it’s true, as in the general story. You take a few people off the street, start talking about the various rumors it began(Jewish control of the world, the gold supply, the press), and the number of people who will lend the notions some credit is disturbing. Why do you think it was The Times that debunked the thing back in the 1920s? The book sold like hotcakes, at a time when fascism was becoming the ideology du jour in England. Recently there have even been political candidates quoting from it. Check out Amazon UK’s sales figures. Why it’s even listed under “Cultural History” befuddles me.

MC,

And I said they think it’s true, as in the general story.

How would you know?

You take a few people off the street, start talking about the various rumors it began(Jewish control of the world, the gold supply, the press), and the number of people who will lend the notions some credit is disturbing.

That’s your polling method? Okay, how many people did you take off the street, which countries did you do it in, what were your survey results?

Why do you think it was The Times that debunked the thing back in the 1920s?

Because its untrue and that’s what good newspapers do – debunk lies.

The book sold like hotcakes, at a time when fascism was becoming the ideology du jour in England.

I don’t know what parallel universe you live in but fascism was never the ideology du jour in England. The German-American Bund held a Nazi rally in Madison Square Garden – so was fascism the ideology du jour in the USA? The existence of a small fascist movement in a country does not mean it is a popular ideology.

Recently there have even been political candidates quoting from it.

One independent. A random nutter. Did he win his seat?

Check out Amazon UK’s sales figures.

I don’t know how to find the sales figures on the Amazon page. But anyway it could be (indeed probably is) jihadist Muslims living in the UK who are buying it.

Why it’s even listed under “Cultural History” befuddles me.

What would you suggest instead? “Current Events”?

I don’t think Obamao will be President for much longer. The Corruptocrats are going to throw him under the bus in an attempt to save their own hides.

Nahanni on June 2, 2010 at 9:00 PM

Absolutely. It’s considered “hip” or even mainstream to oppose Israel and support actions — even terrorist-based — against the Jewish state.

I think I’ve seen this show before and it didn’t end well for the Jewish population on the continent.

amerpundit on June 2, 2010 at 6:28 PM

It also didn’t end well for a lot of other people for a lot of other populations either.

aengus on June 2, 2010 at 8:43 PM

Yeah, it’s anecdotal, but I’ve enough anecdotal experience to know that people in the UK by and large aren’t exactly brimming with love for Israel. The only exception is Northern Ireland. And more often than not, it’s just veiled anti-Semitism (the US is controlled by the Jewish Israeli lobby, the Jews Israelis control the media here, the Jews Israel is intent on dominating the entire Middle East and slaughtering Arabs blah blahblah).

And speaking of going rogue, I wonder if Biden checks in on Palin’s Facebook. He was taken in by her abilities during the VP debates.

onlineanalyst on June 2, 2010 at 6:54 PM

My opinion is that Biden is quite taken with Sarah Palin. I think he holds a begrudging admiration for her.

jimmy2shoes on June 2, 2010 at 10:27 PM

I used to think Biden was a life insureance policy for Obama. No one in there right mind would attempt to impeach him or worse knowing Biden would take his place. Now I am not so sure….

Europe is a puzzel. With all the history of socialist failure and totalitarianism… they vote for it anyway!

With gas chambers barely cold, they can’t see the Arabs manipulating them? Playing that old blame the Jew game? Why can’t they learn?

I really don’t get how they can go down this anti-Semitic road yet again.

Socialism breeds hatred of Jews. I don’t know why but the two go hand in hand.

In a further blow to those claiming the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip are suffering from deprivation caused by the Israelis, Israel loaded items from the flotilla into 21 trucks bound for Gaza but Hamas is refusing them entry.

DKCZ on June 3, 2010 at 12:07 AM

What he said was true, but I have a hard time trusting anything that comes out of that guy’s mouth. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was just saying things like that in public, so he could undercut Obama in 2012; remember: Biden was very critical of Obama’s incompetence and inability during the campaign, and even when he was pacified with a VP slot, he spoke against Obama, saying that his incompetence, ineptitude and laughable paper-tiger nature would literally be the “GO” signal to the enemies of America to mobilize against us, and our allies. As I recall, the first thing that happened was the Persian terror regime launching their first ICBM, showing they can deliver a nuclear warhead to America, as they’ve long since said they wanted to do, so they can destroy the nation with a massive EMP. After that, it’s pretty much been non-stop.

Nice try, Greasy Joe, but you’re already dirty from your associations and your own past. Get out front on this and take a harshly critical rhetorical stance against the rest of the world (and especially those murderous, islamofascist Turks and so-called “Palestinians” [aka: squatters]), and I’ll be somewhat impressed.
