Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on June 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
If you’re going to attempt to build confidence as the man in charge during a disaster, it’s best not to get surprised in the middle of making the argument. At the end of the press conference Barack Obama held on Thursday afternoon, he emphasized that he had an iron grip on the response to the oil spill in the Gulf in his very last words to the press:
But there shouldn’t be any confusion here. The federal government is fully engaged, and I’m fully engaged.
Unfortunately, the “fully engaged” President had just been forced to admit that he had no idea what had happened to Liz Birnbaum, head of the MMS, the agency that regulates BP and would have played a crucial role in the federal government’s response:
Allahpundit wrote that Obama should have gone the full Nicholson and told the press that he’d ordered Birnbaum’s firing as a take-charge moment. Well, perhaps, but that would have meant that Obama would have to have known about the circumstances of Birnbaum’s dismissal in the first place. Instead of presenting a picture of cool competence, Obama’s confusion over Birnbaum painted a very different image instead — one that made these last words sound like amateurish braggadocio rather than any realistic self-assessment.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

You know, I blame Obama for being out of his league, but I also think he is surrounded by the most incompetent people ever. A more competent man would surround himself with people that had a handle on the situation and would keep him informed.

We must go forward.

We stop pumping our oil,
And buy overseas?
That is a train wreck,
Both for our economy
And the World’s oceans.

One can’t practice incompetence on this kind of scale, it’s a gift.
thomasaur on June 1, 2010 at 8:19 AM
I was surprised by this, and I’ve never thought Obama was especially intelligent or competent. But even he had to know that he was going to be asked about the circumstances of the MMS chief’s recent departure. The fact that he didn’t even bother to ask one of his many aides for some of the details before coming out and facing the media is very troubling. It suggests Obama is either extraordinarily lazy, or just not fit for the job he holds, or both.

Ok Obama – do they all love us yet?
jake-the-goose on June 1, 2010 at 8:20 AM
Unfortunately, he doesn’t realize the extent his own incompetence. He’d have been better off letting someone else pick his advisers.
Dee2008 on June 1, 2010 at 8:21 AM
First of all he called it a “resignation”. Who “resigned” her and why?
Secondly Obama says something very disturbing. He said, We have to, IF we are going forward with domestic oil production…”
IF?
There should be no “IF”. We must go forward with domestic oil production. Period

I have a theory that Obama knew perfectly well what happened to Birnbaum, but in light of the Sestak situation, is trying to leave the impression that decisions are made and things happen without his knowledge, thus providing a pattern to establish plausible deniability.

Speaking of oil leaks!!!
Here is a Liberal priority in stopping the leak!!
——————————————-
On May 20, 2010, Jane Lubchenco, head of NOAA, said that a government task force is working
“around the clock” to determine the actual flow rate.
————————–
More departments needed.
============================
On May 21, 2010, Admiral Thad Allen, the National Incident Commander for the Deepwater Horizon Response team,
formally established the Flow Rate Technical Group (FRTG), a multi-agency federal effort to determine oil flow rates from the BP spill.

===================================================
So,its count the barrels loss rate first, and plug the hole
last,no wonder its still leaking six weeks later!!

canopfor,
Isn’t it incredible though? At multiple levels, too. I mean, who would think that Obama was ever capable given his background nevermind his radicalism? There’s just no “there” there. For that I blame the American voter. And to make things worse, all he seems to do is gallivant ’round town while assorted, unchecked “czars” reprise their academic constructs and feed TOTUS for a sycophantic press.
If you wrote a historical record of it all, you’d call it fiction. Yet here we are.
C’mon, November.

Oh, that’s hilarious. “I am the president.” My mother is a toxic narcissist. I don’t know how many times (but it was many, many times) I heard her say, in the exact same tone that Obama uses, “I am the Mother.” I never knew exactly what she meant by that, although I would speculate that she didn’t really feel like she was the mother (since she never really had an authentic feeling in her life). Ditto Barack Hussein Obama.

I think he knew all the facts about the firing, but hadn’t thought out whether he would be praised or blamed for it, so he once again voted Present.

I knew a hunter with a dog that used to never get involved in, or really do, anything. But when any game was taken or brought home or a bear or deer (elk?) was chased off that old dog would prance around and act like he owned the world. The guy said that the fault was that his wife adored the dog and made a fuss over everything it did and never really made it learn anything or earn anything. She wanted the dog to have good self esteem and be happy.
I just realized that his wife could do programs for the making a leader like The One. And get all them votes from the victim class.
Jus’ gotta figure out about not defending the farm, losing crops and starving to death with dogs like that.

That’s an interesting take. I just assumed that between the oil mess and the Sestak fiaso that Obama had some many versions of so many stories that he couldn’t keep this one straight. For the oil story, he was supposed to appear as if he were Al “I’m in charge” Haig, while with the Sestak story he was supposed to be the hapless executive undermined by duplicitous underlings.

OK, so Zero the Spineless feigns masculinity to claim HIS top-down, command centered bureaucracy is in charge? Problem is, all we have in reserve is ‘Sheriff’ Joe the Bombastic Gaffe Machineand Madam Nancy the Botoxed. There isn’t one competent individual in this elitist slime pit.
Impeachment, the only tool available to the people to get rid of this clown and his sycophantic allies, is a long time deal. Billy Jeff Clinton, who arguably broke the law, was impeached, but the aging Senate would never convict. Zero will be with us until 2012. One can only hope his last two years will be as the lamest of ducks.

The govt will fine BP per barrel loss/per day. The longer it leaks, the more $ for the govt. They’ll start rolling the national debt calculator backwards any day now. LOL
Meanwhile, LA isn’t allowed to build sand berms to protect the marshes because the ACOE wants to first study the impact of berms on the environment. I suppose they’ve already researched the impact of oil…
Back in the 1960′s the ACOE built a dam near where I lived. Despite all their wisdom they failed. They placed the holding lake on the wrong side of the dam! It was Painted Rock Dam, AZ.
