Obama WH now distancing itself from BP response efforts
posted at 10:12 am on June 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The American people should know that from the moment this disaster began, the federal government has been in charge of the response effort. As far as I’m concerned, BP is responsible for this horrific disaster, and we will hold them fully accountable on behalf of the United States as well as the people and communities victimized by this tragedy.
We will demand that they pay every dime they owe for the damage they’ve done and the painful losses that they’ve caused. And we will continue to take full advantage of the unique technology and expertise they have to help stop this leak.
But make no mistake: BP is operating at our direction. Every key decision and action they take must be approved by us in advance. I’ve designated Admiral Thad Allen, who has nearly four decades of experience responding to such disasters, as the national incident commander. And if he orders BP to do something to respond to this disaster, they are legally bound to do it.
Struggling to convey command of the worsening Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the Obama administration is taking steps to distance itself from BP and is dispatching Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to the Gulf Coast to meet with federal and state prosecutors. The Holder trip could signal that the environmental calamity might become the subject of a criminal investigation. …
The relationship between the federal government and the oil company has been an awkward collaboration all along — “We have them by the neck,” Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said of BP in congressional testimony last week — but it reached a turning point Monday when the administration said it no longer wants to share a podium with BP at the daily briefing in Louisiana. Instead, the national incident commander, Coast Guard Adm. Thad W. Allen, will give a solo briefing wherever he happens to be.
The public relations shake-up comes in a tense period, with the Gulf Coast rattled by news that last week’s attempted “top kill” of the well didn’t work. A government forecast shows the oil slick potentially striking the popular tourist beaches of Mississippi and Alabama later this week. The official arrival of hurricane season Tuesday has incited a new rash of dire scenarios. With bad news washing up everywhere, the administration has been desperate to convince the public that the government, and not the oil company, is fully in charge of the crisis and mounting a robust response.
The administration and BP have disagreed over whether the company’s next maneuver would cause a temporary increase in the flow of oil into the gulf. In the coming days, BP plans to saw off the top of the leaking riser pipe where it emerges from the blowout preventer that sits on the well. BP will then lower a containment dome, or cap, onto the riser in an attempt to capture the leaking oil.
Unfortunately for the White House, Barack Obama has yoked himself to BP by insisting that the federal government has been in charge since Day 1 and continues to dictate all of BP’s actions in response to the spill. Obama deliberately took ownership of the response in Thursday’s press conference. It’s a little late now to start putting distance between BP and the federal government, especially in the present tense, when everyone now expects the federal government to run the show.
Even the Washington Post has trouble swallowing this:
President Obama and his lieutenants have insisted that the government has full authority. Before BP attempted the top kill, for example, the federal government issued a statement saying it had given approval for the maneuver. Allen, the incident commander, has said that while BP is the “responsible” party, the federal government is “accountable” for the response and that there’s no meaningful way for the government to assume greater authority.
But the daily news briefings have not always bolstered the government’s stature as the commanding authority in the crisis. The briefings have been held at the Unified Area Command headquarters in a Shell Oil training facility in the town of Robert, La. The two principal briefers have been Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry and BP’s chief operating officer, Doug Suttles.
If the White House attempts to wash its hands of the Gulf spill response now, it will only feed the perception of incompetence that has increasingly taken root in the coverage of the disaster. Just the backpedaling seen in this effort after Obama’s “buck stops here” moment on Thursday will be seen as vacillating and hardly courageous. The Post describes the BP response as “seat of the pants,” but that also appears to describe well the White House strategy for both managing the disaster and running the PR campaign that supports it.

The government was there since DAY ONE.
They’ve been in charge of the whole thing. Since day one. They’re still in charge, that is. Obama is.
Obama told us so. And when he ordered them to “plug the damn hole,” it was so. Except that it wasn’t.
So this is the “hope and change” that was promised by the legions of fawning O-bots – a feckless, angry, incompetent, inexperienced excuse for ‘leadership,’ and endless, ongoing buck-passing and finger-pointing when things Obama’s government claims to be doing don’t work out ‘as intended.’
I anxiously await a hysterical defense from an O-bot who will no doubt be making the hilarious claim this is all somehow:
a) Bush’s fault
b) the GOP’s fault
c) Glenn Beck’s fault
d) Sarah Palin’s fault
e) Milton Friedman’s fault
f) Did I say Bush’s fault?
g) Reagan’s fault
h) capitalism’s fault
i) Israel’s fault

As most folks feel…this doozie of a quote is from a Czech newspaper…
“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”

Pretty much. I knew this would happen. The idiot went out there and ran his mouth thinking he’d be perceived as the savior after top kill. Instead he’s left holding the bag until August when hopefully those relief wells will finally “plug the damn hole”.
He’ll attempt to shift all of the blame on BP, and that may get some of the heat off of him. But in the end we still have a major crisis on our hands and the public will be looking to the federal government to at least play a role in dealing with the situation. And I seriously have to question if A)Obama can handle this and B)if he even wants to.

“The day that the rig collapsed and fell to the bottom of the ocean, I had my team in the Oval Office that first day. Those who think that we were either slow on our response or lacked urgency don’t know the facts. This has been our highest priority since this crisis occurred.”
- President Obama during the last press conference
BP cleaning it up and, if they can’t fix it, hiring the company that can solve the problem is exactly what should be happening. They should be paying bills for cleanup, too, either while it’s happening or after in lawsuits. Their shareholders and we, the consumers, would make the decisions on whether they performed adequately and whether the company survives or fails.
The feds (Obama) should be focused on managing the problem now that it has reached the shore and, if fines exist (and I’m sure they do) for uncontrolled leaks per whatever regs are in place at this moment, making sure that those regs are followed. But no vindictiveness, and no Boot/Neck talk. Follow the law and, if you don’t like it, change it (the real, non-Healthcare way) so that the next statistically unlikely time this happens we’ll have learned proper process and response techniques from this time.
And, same as BP, we, the voters, would make the decisions on whether they performed adequately and whether the
companyadministration survives (politically) or fails and must leave office.Everyone work within your realm of the law, contract, and responsibility. How hard is that? Oh, wait. Crisis/waste. I keep forgetting that part.

Big surprise… they take ownership when they think that the situation is over and done with on Thursday, believing that “top-kill” worked, and then immediately back away from control when it becomes clear that “top-kill” failed and that they need to come up with something else.
This is typical of this administration and the executive in charge, who has a history of showing up to steal the glory of other people and, on the times when it failed such as on this occasion and the failed Chicago bid for the Olympics, quickly distanced itself from it when failure reared its ugly head.

I didn’t think Team Obama could have made things worse except by “temporarily” taking over BP operations, but they found a different avenue to appear horrible. This Day One responsible/BP’s at Fault ping-ponging proves that Obama is so political as to be hamstrung to incompetence. Rather than solve the problem, it’s all about the prism of politics… exclusively. This Executive still cannot execute anything effectively unless the solution is hand-delivered by other agents.
This is really, really bad.

Yoked? I’d say that Obama is squarely in a set of stocks alongside BP in its own set of stocks, both in the town square of public opinion. For crying out loud, Carol Browner was on one of the Sunday shows insisting that the Obama administration was all over this…from Day 1.
A Pontius Pilate routine at this point ain’t gonna cut it.
On Sunday, George Will said this wouldn’t be Obama’s Katrina–it’ll be his Iranian Hostage Crisis, something that dragged on and on and on for another one-term president.

You cannot tell me that you are actually surprised by this, they have systematically taking control of whole industries since….well Day1.
They own two of the three auto giants, their car-cazar is now the manfacturing czar (a not so subtle change that got far too little notice) and after nationalizing the Big5 finacials, they are on pace to exceed the 140 + banks they took over last year. Combined with Freddie, Fannie & FHA they own more than 90% of all home mortgages, put another way, it is they that decide whether to “re-structure” your home loan….or not!
The Dhim’s intent to nationalize Big Oil was emphatically stated a while back:

Complete control over everything is their agenda and it continues apace, and on schedule.

An effective executive makes decisions, and then takes RESPONSIBILITY for them, right or wrong.
A chair-warmer makes no decisions and sits on his ass until all the chips have fallen. He only leaps to his feet when its time to assign BLAME or take CREDIT.
What Obama did is called a “premature leap, sit back down.” That’s a rookie mistake; Obama should have known better. This is the kind of thing that always happens when an inveterate sycophant has no one to suck up to but himself.

Barry’s response to this disaster will be his downfall . The press can spin it any way they like but when vacationers in the gulf coast return from a swim covered in crude oil they will be able to connect that to Barry .
Like Jimmah Carters failed helicopter rescue in Iran this is concrete evidence that the man in charge has no clue how to lead . The press can’t hide this and they can’t control the narrative as the consequences of this disaster will effect millions along our coast .
That is the lifeblood of the Barry myth that is spewing into the gulf every day . The Gulf will come back eventually but I hope Soetoro is gone for good .

“….and after nationalizing the Big5 finacials, they are on pace to exceed the 140 + banks they took over last year. Combined with Freddie, Fannie & FHA they own more than 90% of all home mortgages, put another way, it is they that decide whether to “re-structure” your home loan….or not!”
You may think well I don’t need “re-structuring”, to which I’d reply, not yet.
Consider this, back in the 70′s we increased the money supply by 13%, which resulted in interest rates of 17-24%. Since the meltdown of 08 we have in creased the money supply by 120%, what kind of interest rates do you are around the corner from that? Can you afford your payments in that enviroment?
From whence Obama hails (Chicago) all too often receiving city “services” is dependant on who’s yard sign you display during elections. That same mentality now resides in the White House, will you toe the line when faced with moving your children under the nearest overpass?
Tyranny is just ahead and I give us only a 35/65% chance of avoiding it. 65% against.

See the posts above re; nationalizing oil industry. And remember this administration’s mantra, “never let a crisis go to waste.”

BPs go-to guy in Washington got pwned big time. Serves Obumbles right for trying to grab the glory at the last minute.
Hey Barry… how about concentrating on the part that you are responsible for, and where you can actually do some good. You know… get those oil booms out, build the sand berms, get all the help you can to the locals.
And maybe cut back a bit on your daily golf and basketball sessions. You know… spend some real time with your people trying to fix what you can. Instead of fund raisers and holidays, you and your guys could get involved in the actual planning and work of cleaning up this disaster.

I nominate Ed Morrissey for Diplomat of the Month:
“the perception of incompetence”
Unlike “the appearance of conflict” – something which government employees and elected officials once strove to avoid – the Obama Administration has clearly demonstrated bonafide incompetence to a degree which may well soon reach criminal negligence
(e.g. Energy Secretary directing BP to stop “top kill”…thereby being proscriptive).

If I were an African-American, I would be insulted, I mean angry, that the Democrat Party jammed this incompetent man into the White House as a model of how smart African-Americans are.
If I were an African-American, I would be changing this narrative as fast as possible — to wit: remember, Obama is a WHITE man.
I’d support that narrative to help African-Americans save face.
Clarence Thomas looks pretty smart, doesn’t he?
Come on over to our side, African-Americans. You know you want to. You know you need to.

BP said they needed golfballs to plug the danged hole.
Skippy thought they said “goofballs”, so he’s dispatching Holder.
