Helen Thomas to Gibbs: Why didn’t you immediately jump to conclusions about this “deliberate massacre” like I did?

posted at 5:04 pm on June 1, 2010 by Allahpundit

Nothing new here, although her press-room anti-Israel jeremiads do appear to be making some headway. Remember when she tried to put Obama on the spot at his first presidential presser over Israel’s nuclear capability? Just 16 short months later, suddenly The One’s backing calls for a nuclear-free Middle East. Keep at it, Helen. Maybe, pretty soon, he’ll be asking people too to explain to him why Al Qaeda wants to attack America.

Gibbs knows the answer to her question but he can’t give it publicly lest it alienate our Turkish “ally” and Palestinian “partner in peace.” For the brutal truth, you need a grant of anonymity:

With much of the world expressing fury over the raid, the contrast with Washington’s muted response could not have been more striking.

“The situation is that they’re so isolated right now that it’s not only that we’re the only ones who will stick up for them,” said an American official. “We’re the only ones who believe them — and what they’re saying is true.”

The official was referring to Israeli protestations — backed by Israel Defense Forces video — that their solders were attacked by passengers on a ship headed for Gaza with humanitarian aid, when they boarded the ship in what the Israelis concede were international waters.

Thanks to the White House, the Security Council resolution that passed didn’t explicitly condemn Israel but merely the unspecified “acts” that led to deaths on the ship. That was their concession to the actual truth of what happened, and diplomatically it’s probably the best they could have done. As for Helen, I realize that she’s the “grand dame of the press corps” or whatever, but if we’re going to reduce Q&A with Gibbs into a soapbox for the reporters present, let’s dispense with the actual journalists there like Tapper and Major Garrett and send in people like O’Reilly and Olbermann to rant at him instead. What you lose in information you’ll gain in entertainment!

Why is this even a story at all?

doriangrey on June 1, 2010 at 5:18 PM

“The situation is that they’re so isolated right now that it’s not only that we’re the only ones who will stick up for them,” said an American official.

This “american official” is a fool; Israel is used to working in so called “isolation” – where everyone quietly congratulates and applauds, and publicly protests and condemns for the fear of oil rich jihadis. this is not new. The watered down resolution and moving on has more to do with very pressing issue of Iran and not getting derailed with some hamas-flotilla side show.

Keep in mind this group of ships was intentionally running a blockade to supply another group who has been firing rockets into Israel for years?

No. That’s not it.

I’d like to see the results of a real investigation, personally. This was the premier Israeli defense team, and it certainly has blown up.

Why?

AnninCA on June 1, 2010 at 5:21 PM

Why? Because they wanted to treat these so called peace keepers as human beings, and give them the benefit of the doubt on what they were actually transporting into Gaza….all the while knowing, they were formed from a group with AQ, and with a game plan before they ever left the shores of Turkey.

After several warnings to turn back, they forged forward. After being warned the ship would be boarded…they cried out rallying cries, and then gathered weapons, and went into action….only to be returned with paint balls. When after all that, they were hell bent on beating, and killing the Israelis, the Israelis, AFTER seeking permission, were allowed to defend themselves. Unfortunately with brutal force. I for one, can’t blame them. It’s called self preservation.

So now what’s the thinking here? If you’re attacked, just sit back and take it? Israel doesn’t think so, and neither do I. They are an ally of the United States, and it amazes me that there is really any question to this, with all the evidence already out there to see, and read.

The fact is you said Israel acted stupidly even though you don’t have all that facts. You’re practically Obama.

Ronnie on June 1, 2010 at 5:39 PM

No, I didn’t say that. I did say that the situation has blown up.

Ampersand on June 1, 2010 at 5:42 PM

I think the attacks on me are interesting. I’m actually very pro-Israel.

But yet, this blog attacks.

I think I’ll remain Independent. There is something way hinky about conservatives.

AnninCA on June 1, 2010 at 5:40 PM

Victim card alert.

Ronnie on June 1, 2010 at 5:42 PM

When it comes to spin, AnninCA is a whirling dervish of liberal misdirection and dishonesty. “I simply would like to hear the real facts.” Uh-huh. She’s just “asking questions” because she’s a “truth teller,’ see?!?!

At least the Organizing for America trolls have improved their techniques from the usual obscene sexual, scatological rants.

FIFY – and for the record, Hornet has dibs on the ruby slippers.

Laura in Maryland on June 1, 2010 at 5:44 PM

No, I didn’t say that. I did say that the situation has blown up.

AnninCA on June 1, 2010 at 5:41 PM

That’s exactly what you said.

They should have been smarter than to let this happen. That’s really the problem.

I think we need the facts first. I’m not at all persuaded by Turkey.

AnninCA on June 1, 2010 at 5:14 PM

That is a joke, right?
Or are those lyin’ eyes flaring up again?

JusDreamin on June 1, 2010 at 5:45 PM

Victim card alert.

Ronnie on June 1, 2010 at 5:42 PM

isn’t it interesting how the only person playing the victim card here is also the first one complaining about others acting like victims?

And she continues wonders why people “attack”* her.

*point out her idiotic reasoning

Ampersand on June 1, 2010 at 5:46 PM

And knock off the victim talk.

AnninCA on June 1, 2010 at 5:36 PM

Laura in Maryland on June 1, 2010 at 5:47 PM
